MiLB Dodger Recap 8/4/10 - Buss, Special Loon of the Day

AAA – Isotopes plate two in the bottom of the 8th giving Josh Lindblom his first win in a ton of Sundays. Gibbons continues to mash slugging his 19th home run along with two other hits to move his average up to .357.

AA – Lookouts lose 3 -2 as a couple of demoted Isotopes took to the hill. Castillo and Adkins were named pitchers but it was Justin Miller who took the loss. Castillo looks like someone who will be released soon. Dee Gordon stole his 40th base, but not much else was happening on the offense.

High A – Inland Empire pitching continues to blow no matter how hight the draft pick is, that is pitching. Ethan Martin gave up 11 base-runners in another less then stellar outing as the 66ers got pounded 11 - 3.

A – Loon pitching was once again the story as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Christenson, Contreras, and Vasquez  struck out nine with zero walks. USC star Nick Buss has quietly started to hit andshockingly has a TSL of .421/.465/.579 over his last 10 games. He also has 12 steals to one CS in 30 games with the Loons. BCG only had one hit tonight.

Rookie Ogden – Cal State Dominguez Hills star Bret Montgomery got the 3 - 2 victory by tossing six good innings. Dean and Akins went back to back to lead the offense. Landry did not play, which is the only way he did not get a hit.

Rookie Arizona – Ralston Cash started and went four innings, but the bullpen was ineffective and they lost 8 - 6.  Infielder Joe Becker must have just come off of rehab as he got the start at 2nd base and led the offense.

I posted this in the other minor league thread, but it was really late...

According to the minor league transactions pages, Aaron Miller was apparently demoted back to Hi-A…not sure why, and Matt Wallach was promoted to AA

by Brandon Lennox on Aug 4, 2010 11:17 PM PDT reply actions

what was his AA line?

Could it be to limit innings but not block up a spot in AA?

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Aug 4, 2010 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

They dropped

Castillo back to AA, but they could have just released him. Strange move, maybe they saw something that suggested he simply was not ready for AA, or they want him working with Hough. However based on what the pitchers are doing in the Cal League not sure what Hough has to offer.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

Miller's been really shitty since his promotion

I was really surprised to see that.

Why were some of these guys moved from High A to AZL (Delmonico, for example)? Is it to focus on certain types of instruction they don’t get at the higher levels?

by kinbote on Aug 5, 2010 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

no it was because they were rehabbing injuries.

Delmonico had a broken hand. Although for Mattingly, it could be just because he sucks

by Brandon Lennox on Aug 5, 2010 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

He's way too old for Ogden

but Bret Montgomery’s peripherals so far are worth a look: 24.2 IP, 22 SO, 3 BB, 72 GB%, 2.65 FIP

by Sean P. on Aug 5, 2010 10:29 AM PDT reply actions

Dude throws 87-88 with a decent splitter. He is big though so hopefully our MiLB guys can grow a couple more mph out of him.

For one, Montgomery would be way too old for AA let along a rookie league...

and for 2, it’d be pretty tough to get any more velocity out of a guy who is already 25 years old

by Brandon Lennox on Aug 5, 2010 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Just meant from a ‘hey that dude is weak and his college didn’t even have a weight room (which it doesn’t) maybe we he’ll pick up a couple ticks by getting in shape’ angle.

The last guy to make the bigs from our school is like, Doug Drabek.

Martin's #'s for 1 month

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=543495

Check out his numbers…… he has been rough for a whole month. This is his second season and he just broke 100 innings again. With the big drop in quality of starts and MAJOR increase in HR’s anyone else think he may be losing the bite on his pitches and he is just worn out?
