Surpised Billz first third
Was better than this last third. I would have thought the other way around.
Pitchers have looked great except Brox, Ely, and a couple other relievers that should just be jettisoned at this point (Weaver, Sherrill)
Hitting in this second third (as we all know) has been abysmal except Furcal. I hope he gets healthy quick. Loss of J. Mart for the year will hurt, especially since Colletti will likely overpay to get some scrap, but we’d miss Furcal for the year more.
Does anybody else think..
That was Martins last game here? If he dosent play again this year, it could be just that. Im kind of wondering if he is going to be traded, or non-tendered, with another arbitrtaion hearing on its way.
How good is his defense at 3B? Could he come back next year as our starting 3B? Move Blake to the bench and then bring in someone like Doumit for C?
GA better than XPaul in last 54? Not looking like XP has a future in the lineup 2011 at this rate.
@soyboquense
or not
that probably depends on what your definition is. Is Michael Saunders a 4th/5th outfielder?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Not sure
I understand what you’re trying to compare?
I see a lot of Xavier Pauls game in Michael Saunders
he’s the starting left fielder for the Mariners. I look around baseball these days and I see several players who I used to categorize as 4th outfielder types, starting, so maybe a few years ago the type of game Paul has would suggest he’s a 4th outfielder but in todays game, he may have the skills to actually be a starting corner. I don’t have time now but I could list some outfielders who get steady play that I think Paul could match up with.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think Paul could come close to or outperform OFers like Millege, Ibanez, Fukudome, Pierre, Granderson, etc.
You could be right
but then again Saunders was a heralded prospect who is throwing up a 100 OPS+ as a 23 year old. XMan is two years older and sitting on a 62 OPS+ in a similar amount of plate appearances.
I like Paul, so I hope you are right, but if he just turns out to be a 4th OF/platoon type of guy I won’t be surprised.
Man
Other then Manny our complete OF really really really sucked the last 54 games
Broxton really has struggled
Our starting pitching other then the fifth spot have been bloody awesoke
If Rafy Furcal had not been hitting that might have been the worst stretch of offense since 2003.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I'm thinking the Dodgers non-tender Martin
but then sign him to a one year deal saving a few million.
I liked the Lilly trade but just that one mistake of not being in the position to tell Martin to slide may overshadow anything else he does this summer. He’s been in the NL long enough, he has no excuse.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Russ said after the game that he didn’t slide because he wasn’t sure to run over the catcher or slide and he did neither.

It had everything to do with the play at the plate
If Martin had slid, he doesn’t trip on the grass.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 5, 2010 8:11 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Martin said Lilly was yelling at him to slide but it was his own indecision that caused the awkward play.
Lilly was just out of position, but he got his message across.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 5, 2010 8:10 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
What happens if they non-tender Martin and can’t resign him at a lower rate? Is there any major league catcher that McCourt could afford or are we starting Ellis and praying Delmonico pans out in two years?
Someone will be acquired over the next week or two IMO
And if not, there will be some cheap guys out there. Maybe some platoon possibilities.
Actually, depending on the Rockies’ mood…Isn’t Miguel Olivo a free agent after the year? He’s been ok this year.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
Not sure if it’s Tracy, but over the last 3 years the Rockies refuse to give the job to ianetta. Should try to get him.

That’s what I was thinking too, but I want to say it’s because the guy has nasty R/L splits.

Should be plenty of crappy options in 2011
no good ones, but unfortunately Martin was not a good option either. I’m sure Buck and his ilk will be available. You can even go get the hated one from the White Sox. Or for fun we could get Mardson from the Indians, it would the ultimate irony.

I think it was Dylan Hernandez
Last night who tweeted about the pre-tender contract, what he called the Kim Ng special. Essentially, they will try to sign him to a reduced rate prior to the date they have to tender him. I think if he gets non-tendered he’s gone.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 5, 2010 8:08 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Didn’t know we could do that? I thought the only way you could get an arb eligible player cheaper than their current contract was to non-tender and then try to re-sign.
It would probably end up being a 2-year deal but you essentially say look, you’re not going to be tendered but nobody is going to pay you $4.04 million in the first year (20% max cut rule).

Doesn't it all depend on his prognosis?
If he has to get one of those surgeries, no team in their right mind is going to give him a 2yr/$9-$10mm contract, when they have no idea what they’ll get out of him.
It could be argued he’s not worth that contract fully healthy at this point. Olivo, Torrealba, guys like that are making half of that.
Free agent catchers are cheaper aren’t they?
Kendall 6/2
Olivo 2.5/1
Barajas 2/1
Pudge 6/2
Granted, I don’t want Jason Kendall on our team either, but with Martin’s now serious injury lingering (regardless if its the FAIL surgery or the big surgery) he shouldn’t be making more than 7/2. I think if he gets non-tendered and signed as a free agent by another club, he wouldn’t get more than 2-3/1 with some incentives.

what choices do the Dodgers have? Can they give him a rehab assignment?
Why would it have to be a phantom DL? He has a problem with alcohol, that seems like a good reason for the DL.
But since he went to rehab for it and I believe is still there wouldn’t this qualify for a trip to the DL?

That’s one of the things I never quite understood. Why is alcoholism considered a disease. Perhaps I don’t have a good grasp of the definition of what a “disease” is. Just seems like more of an addiction to me. I can see that some people may be more predisposed to succumb to this and other addictions, but if you never took a drink once in your life you would never be an alcoholic, so how can that be considered a disease. Something I will never grasp, even though I am apparently wrong. Then why aren’t other addictions considered diseases? I suppose it is not as PC convenient to consider chocolate-ism a disease.
Because alcoholism doesn’t just go away when you stop drinking. The disease isn’t the affects of drinking that much, it’s not being able to stop drinking once you start.
by regfairfield on Aug 5, 2010 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions
Do you consider something like a peanut allergy a disease?
by regfairfield on Aug 5, 2010 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions
You are born with that
You aren’t born addicted to alcohol. Alcoholism is something that you cause by doing something yourself (unless someone is forcing you to drink it), it’s never not your fault.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
But some people
are hereditarily more likely to become addicted to alcohol than others. With alcohol being such a social element, it’s hard to blame

Maybe I'm just judgemental
Actually, I know I am, but most people just have no control. I see friends and just random people getting wasted at such a young age like every other weekend, and I can see exactly why so many people have alcohol problems. I find it to be incredibly ridiculous myself, but I am a square who has had alcohol 2 or 3 times in my life.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
it's really something
you can’t know unless you go through it. I’ve seen people struggle with addiction, and it’s nothing so easy as “just stop”.

Your problem there
is you are equating college age binge drinking with alcoholism, which really isn’t a fair comparison. Its simply not the same thing.
other diseases have triggers as well
not that I know anything about alcoholism and why it is or isn’t a ‘disease’.
Yeah, I’m sure nasty substances trigger lots of bad things. I just don’t get why putting those nasty substances in your body when you know they are bad would be considered having a disease. I suppose it is partially semantics. I could kind of agree that it is a disease that you give yourself, but the “give yourself” is what I have trouble getting past. Either way, I’m sure being an alcoholic is not fun and is a serious issue.

pattern of symptoms, chronicity, progression, subject to relapse, and treatability.

Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
Thanks. In my mind I could call the liver disease which is a by product of the heavy drinking a disease, but not the act of drinking itself. I would add a 6th element to the list, just would need to think it out to be worded correctly.

I miss Manny's bat :(
Only Loney, Dewitt, Furcal, Manny, and GA were better in the last 54 games than the first 54 games…and when I say that I mean everyone else was worse by a lot. Shit.
At least the starting pitching looks phenomenal.

How nice would it be
to have Lucas May right about now?
Does anyone have any ideas on who may be available on who could clear waivers for a trade, in the way of catchers?
Is anyone else bothered by the double play combo of Carroll and Theriot? I think I’d rather see Theriot at short and Belly at second.
I don’t understand why we like having guys on the roster that don’t even play. Particularly in Belliard. Belliard > Carroll. I at least understand Monk hardly pitching (unless there’s absolutely no 5th starter option available… now he’s back to his role of only pitching in blowouts), since they see something in him and want to keep him around for the future. That had better pay off.
Especially since Furcal is hurt, if Kemp can continue hitting like he did Tuesday, and Ethier like he did last night, now that the bullpen is solidified, and our starting pitching has been ROCK SOLID for over a month… we have a chance!!
Right??? :/
let me try
Lucas May: Hindsight, yadda yadda
Catchers: being discussed
DP Combo: Seemed to work last night
Belliard: agreed, but he hasn’t hit real well
Monk: He’d be in the minors if he wasn’t a rule 5 guy, but I think he has a future
Offense: Hope it woke up.

Me too. I still hope for the flashes of brilliance he had early in his career
It would kinda bum me out for him to leave like this and would really suck to see him on another team. That said, it may suck more to have him on the team being paid lotsa cash just to suck. Im torn like a labrum
Thanks for the summary.
I like an offense with Belly and Theriot more than Carroll and Theriot. And Theriot is a better SS.
Repko shoulda learned how to catch.
Why not Jansen as catcher? Awful offensive numbers in the low minors, but at least he can hit the ball out of the park, something Ellis won’t be doing. Ausmus can come in to catch the 8th while Jansen goes out to set up.
Lucas May is worse than Ellis and Ausmus.
Catchers, I dunno, would either have to be worse than most teams backup catcher or expensive. Pudge, Navarro or Jose Molina look like the best reasonable options.
Worse at catching, yes
but I can’t doubt that he’d be a better hitter. At the very least, he’d make a better backup since the pinch hitting option is infinitely better than either Ausmus or Ellis.
Will Ned/Frank take on salary since a waivers catcher is probably gonna come with a pricetag? After all, Ned doesn’t want to lose 90 games!
.222/.270/.360 MLE, plus he probably can’t actually handle the position. He’s not really a better hitter.
by regfairfield on Aug 5, 2010 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions
May is clearly a better hitter
than a washed up dude and a lifetime minor leaguer whose high MiLB OBP won’t play in the majors.
306/390/468 last season in Chattanooga.
284/345/488 this season on 3 different teams.
And that .284/.345/.488 in a launching pad just isn’t good. Again, it translates to .222/.270/.360 in the bigs, probably even worse in Dodger Stadium.
Granted, anyone we get probably won’t hit much better, but at least they can handle the position.
by regfairfield on Aug 5, 2010 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions
In other words
it translates to Ausmus or Ellis type numbers, and that’s just going by projections. You know you’ll get that out of Ausmus or Ellis, May could very well hit better than that.
Not comparing the two in terms of quality (they’re not even in the same universe), but what’s the MLE of Posey’s AAA stats?
And...
he’s outperforming it! So May could as well! :)
Nah, kidding, of course. Point taken about MLE, but still, you never know what you’re going to get, whereas Ellis and Ausmus are godawful.
That’s the best part about you never know what you’re gonna get, it can apply to Ellis and Ausmus.
Hell, Ausmus hit .295/.343/.368 just last year.

Which was moot anyway, since dude was traded away for a white, cheaper Juan Pierre.

Shouldn’t it stand to reason that he’d be worse against MLB pitching, not better?

What's done is done
If this is how we’ll roll, lets do it. I wish Russell the best. I hope he saved his money and hooks on somewhere when he’s non-tendered. I see Hundley and Torrealba or Olivo and Iannetta as our blueprint at C in 2011.
Barring a new owner making a $$splash with the payroll, I could be on board with the core Ethier,Kemp, Loney surrounded by Furcal and a series of platoons. The pen will be good enough but the starting rotation is key. If we could go into the season with this starting 5 and platoons at C and LF maybe Theriot non tendered with Martin…but OFFERING ARBITRATION to Lilly(picks or 1 year or sign him for 2-3 years gasp!) we would be competitive with good pitching and spotty offense. Casey Stengel did well with platoons back in the day…maybe a rook like Sands comes into play mid year.
Also the Martin bad break might get a Kemp or Bills for eg more likely to sign a long term deal that buys out a couple of free agent years. It does take two to tango though.
I love baseball too much to hate on the Dodgers. Get me a 3b,C prospect next year Logan and a LH 3b platoon guy at 3b Ned while focusing the tight payroll on starting pitching please.
And bring back Vinnie. Christ he sounds as great and lucid as ever.
When's the last time
our starting staff was THIS good and THIS solid?
Essentially the same guys as last season, but I now have far more confidence in Padilla, plus I’ll take Lilly over Garland, and Kershaw and Bills each a year older.
After a cursory glance, I’m thinking 1991 maybe. Morgan, Ramon, Belcher, Ojeda, Hershiser, and some Kevin Gross!
Also, is Padilla seems re-born as a better/different pitcher. Is the jump in his K rate sustainable? Was it just the AL and the park in Texas that dulled the numbers of what should have been his peak years?
he played
in two hitters parks (PHI and TEX). I also think he just feels more comfortable in this organization so he is just relaxing and concentrating on pitching.

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Well
when this movie was made/book was written, international currency was dependent upon the US gold supply for its value. I only know the basics, but apparently the US dollar was losing value, so W. Germany asked for the gold value of its US currency, and then Switzerland, so Nixon did something that made the dollar independent from the US gold supply, which I don’t really understand, but basically made a Goldfinger like plan to hold gold ransom, ineffective.

by Josie Becker on Aug 5, 2010 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions
That America won't crash to the ground.
Also, that we will eventually pay for our debts. Okay, not really.
What’s its really based on is that other competing currencies like the Euro and Yen also waxes and wanes in strength compared to the Dollar, and the Dollar is considered relatively stable. And its fairly easy to grab U.S. currency because the Treasury pumps so much of it every day. Its the official currency of over 20 countries, and accepted in many more without having to exchange to the country’s regular currency.
After the Second World War, a system similar to a Gold Standard was established by the Bretton Woods Agreements. Under this system, many countries fixed their exchange rates relative to the U.S. dollar. The U.S. promised to fix the price of gold at $35 per ounce. Implicitly, then, all currencies pegged to the dollar also had a fixed value in terms of gold. Under the regime of the French President Charles de Gaulle up to 1970, France reduced its dollar reserves, trading them for gold from the U.S. government, thereby reducing U.S. economic influence abroad. This, along with the fiscal strain of federal expenditures for the Vietnam War, led President Richard Nixon to end the direct convertibility of the dollar to gold in 1971, resulting in the system’s breakdown, commonly known as the Nixon Shock.

in that he only has 3 no-decisions.
One day Kershaw will put up the same numbers in terms of ERA, FIP, etc. but he will be like 11 – 4.
Kershaw has a better FIP than Ubaldo (3.14 to 3.20), close in xFIP (3.95 to 3.82), and Ubaldo has a better ERA (2.94 to 2.61). Kershaw has a better K rate (9.41 K/9 to 8.19 K/9) and a slightly worse walk rate (3.92 BB/9 to 3.64 BB/9). Ubaldo just has a much better opponent batting average right now (.221 to .199), and thats where the edge in WAR (4.1 to 3.3) is coming from right now. I wasn't really saying directly
I was just thinking that edge in OPBA was helping his all around stats to help his WAR advantage.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

Last night's first hit
I keep reading that it was off Loney’s glove, but without explanation. Was this something that he should have come up with? Or was he lucky just to get a bit of glove on it?

Solid hit, James extended as far as he could and getting a nick of it was a pretty good play, IMHO

Withrow starting today
Looking at his pattern, he will probably have a bad game. Probably a line of 4 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K’s.
His pattern is seriously pointing that way.
He must be an
absolute shitbox for a teammate.
He has 16 HR and 61 RBi this year. Not great, but not terrible.
Is he still stellar or=n defense? I know he used to have a freakin cannon.
i think
he just went ice cold, he’s gonna be a FA, and they have Kila HawaiianPunch to replace him.

Ugh
more than anything else, losing Manny took the wind out of the sails of this team.
Leading the league in OMGs.

Would Jose Guillen be the bat off the bench we need
His salary is high 3.8 million left on his contract, but strikes me he would be a great bat off the bench to replace GA. Maybe we can get him and get Lucas May back since I think he is still in the Royals minor leagues.
