Dodgers August In Review: Running In Place
The Dodgers just kind of plodded along in August, continuing their ordinary season with an ordinary 14-15 month. They were 8-7 at home for the month, and 6-8 on the road.
Oh yeah, they also got rid of Manny Ramirez, and the McCourt divorce trial began. August sucked.
Dodger Batter of August: Rod Barajas did his best to claim this award with his six games as a Dodger -- he tied for the sixth most extra-base hits on the club during the month -- but since he wasn't here too long, this award goes to Andre Ethier, who rebounded with a nice month, hitting .305/.368/.505. Casey Blake gets an honorable mention for his .812 OPS.
Matt Kemp gets dishonorable mention for his third straight sub-.300 OBP month, and James Loney, even with a home run on the final day of the month, hit a paltry .217/.291/.321 for the month.
Dodger Pitcher of August: Hiroki Kuroda may not have had the wins to show for it, but he led the starters in ERA, WHIP, and FIP in August, so he gets the award. The starters were very good in August, and honorable mention goes to Ted Lilly, Chad Billingsley, and Clayton Kershaw.

Games of the Month: This is a tie, featuring a pair of near no-hitters. On August 4 against the Padres, Vicente Padilla gave up his first hit after 6 1/3 innings, and completed a two-hit shutout in a 9-0 victory. Then on August 30, Hiroki Kuroda took a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings, and the Dodgers beat Roy Halladay and the Phillies, 3-0.
Pinch Hitting: For the month, Dodger pinch hitters had 13 hits in 41 at-bats, with a double and four walks, hitting .317/.378/.341.
Runners in Scoring Position: In August, the Dodgers hit .257/.361/.359 with runners in scoring position in 293 plate appearances.
They had a runner on third base with less than two outs 61 times, and got the runner home 22 times, or 36.1% (the entire NL scored 487 of 935, 52.1%).
They had a runner on second base with nobody out 63 times, and the runner advanced 23 times, or 36.5% (the entire NL advanced the runner 422 of 1,004 times, 42.0%).
Upcoming Month: The Dodgers play out the string, mostly within the division. Aside from the finale with the Phillies on the first day of the month and a four-game series in Houston, the Dodgers play all their remaining games -- 24 of 29 -- against the NL West.

August
Pretty indicative of the whole season I guess. Once they got one part working, another part stopped.
I miscounted
the other day when I said the Dodgers were at 38 on their 40-man roster; they are at 39. I think I missed Rod Barajas. So, if they call up Castro, that will put the roster at 40, although they can put Martin on the 60-day DL to create another space if they need it I guess.
As of last night, there was no word out of ABQ either:
Wallach said the Dodgers have not informed him if any players will be recalled to Los Angeles on Wednesday, which is the first day Major League rosters can expand.
A middle infielder has to be on their way if Theriot is banged up.

i read Castro
left the AAA team for “personal reasons.”

from the Dodger site
Infielder Juan Castro cleared waivers after he was designated for assignment on Aug. 21 and could have been a candidate to return to the Majors had he not taken a leave of absence for personal reasons.

I just saw highlights of Kelly Johnson last night; I guess his teammates played a prank on him, getting the PA guy to play “It’s Raining Men” for his AB music. Hilarious
saw that
that was awesoke. He just looked into the dugout like “You sons of bitches”. Mark Reynolds was laughing his ass off.

I wonder if the Dodgers will consider taking a flyer on Hermida. He was released.
He hasn’t done much since ‘07, but he’s only 26 and seems like someone Ned would take a look at.
What about
Kemp
Ethier
Hermida
Paul
R. Johnson
Platoon of R. Johnson with either Paul or Hermida. Loser of that battle is the extra outfielder.
I'd pull the trigger. The skills exist, they just need to show up again.
I’m much more interested in taking gambles on those who displayed the skills at a high level in the minors and had some success in the majors. However it does not say much the Sox released him and are playing perennial AAA players instead of him. Could be other issues besides his skills for them not to give him some at bats when everyone was hurt. Maybe he’s just a NL player:)

Phillies and Rockies
Have to head back to Denver for makeup game on Thursday. Though this game was always scheduled as a 12:10 start.
The Dodgers also use these games as big low cost group sales for school kids.
So.......
What exactly do they see in Monasterios to keep him on the 25 man all year. Not like he was blocking anybody, and he was far from the worst pitcher this staff has seen this year, but I do not see anything special at all from him.
Ely with a better fastball?
I thought he was doing a better job since coming off the DL, but still, like you said, nothing special.
Perhaps starting every fifth day in ABQ next year will be better for him, and if he is needed will be more ready to go deeper into games.
I think they like him
and want to keep him in the system. I don’t they planned to have him make this many starts and liked him in the long relief role. Since he was a rule V guy, they had to keep him on the 25 man all year. Next year they can put him in AAA and have him get more work as a starter.
He’s competent enough and arguably a better option as a swingman than Ely or Weaver.
I was lower on him a month ago, but since he’s stepped in for Padilla I’ve been impressed with his ability to induce swings and misses.
I think he’s a better Ely and his being here didn’t hurt anything.

Honest like
I think it’s only fair that occasionally US and Mexico are actually challenged to make the cup.
still no challenge. with 14 games in the final group, US can run away and hide. and can you imagine the lop sided scores since there will be some serious non contenders getting hammered. in 14 games, i predict US or Mexico will end up with a GD of around +45
well in reality yeah
but in the old hexagonal format it wasn’t even theoretically possible for a Canada or a Costa Rica to sneak in but on the rarest occasions
And what is the point of US or Mexico even being in the first knockout stage? Euros laugh at us when most teams there play 10 to get in, and the over here you have to go through a 20 game gauntlet of adverse conditions to get in.
It tickles this ignorant slob

Saw Kick Ass last night after the Monk blowup
when I saw G Scott’s movie options.
I had no idea that movie was going to be that movie. I may never has seen a movie that shocked me more about expectations and what it was. Needless to say, my mouth dropped at the first appearance of Hit Girl and never closed the rest of the movie.

Jodie Foster career worked out okay
hope she has the same luck.
I’m sure you were kidding about the language right? I mean she killed like 100 guys and you care about the language?
Yeah the murder was worse than the language, but for some reason the language was more of a surprise (than the huge staff through the heart? maybe not, haha).

Wha wha whaaaa
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I didn't mention the violence, but not sure why
Probably because when they shot the movie it wasn’t realistic. But I see your point.

Eberts review comes to mind
he couldn’t handle watching that girl going around swearing and killing so much.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Yeah they didn't know how to market it
those of us who were familiar with the comic and/or had been warned, were less surprised, but even then it’s still shockingly violent and profane. And I still loved the hell out of it. As I said here the other night when watching it again, it’s not one to watch with your children. (Unless they’re past teenage years.) But it’s a really dark but interesting movie that will develop a cult following I bet

How do you market a movie where a 12 year old
runs around killing people and swearing?
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
if people know off the top of their heads...
how much money is actually coming off the books after this season?
pittance
If we didn’t defer, it would quite substantial and the expectations in 2011 would be quite different.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
can't they still afford to bring Lilly back?
as their FA signing and then fill in other spot from within + cheaper FA?
And/or, yeah, a trade.

Ha!
Many of the writers are lawyers, looking for an outlet for their writing and argumentative skills, said SBNation chief executive Jim Bankoff.
But this is sad:
Another competitor, BleacherReport.com, relies mostly on amateur reporters to cover a variety of teams and sports. The site has been growing steadily, to nearly 6 million unique visitors in July, though it’s hard to say how much of the audience comes for sports and how much is lured in by cheesecake photo galleries, many of cheerleaders, that fill the margins of the site.
I think I'll head over to bleacherReport.com
something about the margins sounded interesting.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
That makes sense
Lawyers hate their jobs
They are at work alot
They make enough money that working for nothing doesn’t set them back
They have no friends other then other lawyers
LAT is exempt from all above.
How many Lawyers here?
On BattleRedBlog
I know at least two of the writers are lawyers, including the editor in chief.

And with that, what are your (TBLA members) predictions of teams to win their respective conference?
PAC10 – USC
ACC- ATL: Florida State / COA: Miami
Big East: Connecticut
Big 10: Ohio State
Big 12: North: Nebraska / South: Texas
SEC: East: Florida / West: Alabama
MWC: TCU
WAC: Boise St
Wow.
I’ll go with the homer pick and say Oregon St. for Pac 10. I really have no idea on the others.

for the Big East
I like West Virginia to bounce back and win the conference. And I’m still picking Oregon in the Pac 10 despite losing Masoli. Although I think SC will be playing with nothing to lose, which could make them even more dangerous.
other than that I think I agree on every pick. Although I’m torn between Miami and Va Tech for the ACC Coastal

This is odd: Yankees Continue Pushing for Lilly?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/09/yankees-to-continue-pushing-for-lilly-deal.html
The Yankees “will continue to push to make a deal” for Dodgers lefty Ted Lilly, according to Mark Feinsand, Bill Madden, Anthony McCarron, and Roger Rubin of the New York Daily News. Furthermore, the writers say the Yankees “believe there is a loophole that because they were awarded the claim before the first of the month, they could use Lilly on their postseason roster.”
Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues can’t find evidence of this loophole, nor could ESPN’s Keith Law or a big league executive with which Law spoke. Aside from postseason eligibility, is it plausible for the Yankees to acquire Lilly for the rest of the regular season? Can the Dodgers place Lilly on waivers again, even after pulling him back the first time the Yankees won the claim?

Posted this in the minor league thread, though I want a little more discussion on it in here
Here are the stats for the people who are in the running for Dodgers Minor League Pitcher of the Year (I didn’t include Jansen, though he actually does deserve consideration).
Matt Magill:
7-4 3.29 ERA 23 games 19 starts 120.1 innings 84 Hits 48 Runs 44 ER 12 HR 51 BB 129 Ks 1.12 WHIP
Carl Webster:
11-9 2.94 ERA 25 Games 22 Starts 125.1 Innings 116 Hits 54 Runs 41 ER 6 HR 52 BB 108 Ks 1.34 WHIP
Rubby De La Rosa:
Great Lakes – 4-1 3.19 ERA 14 Games 5 Starts 59.1 Innings 49 Hits 23 Runs 21 ER 3 HR 17 BB 55 Ks 1.11 WHIP
Chattanooga – 3-0 1.37 ERA 7 Games 7 Starts 46 Innings 32 Hits 10 Runs 7 ER 1 HR 21 BB 35 Ks 1.15 WHIP
Personally I’m going to go with Magill as our top SP this year because he was better than Webster (who I think did very well this year) and had 7 more starts than Rubby, even though Rubby put up better numbers overall. I could easily be persuaded to go with Rubby though, especially because he’s got 7 starts and 46 innings in AA where he’s been excellent.

Because I'd rather choose a starter
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
Not really, I just posted the stats of the 3 pitchers who I thought would be in the running, and I should have looked up Jansen’s and added his, but I didn’t.
I’m fine with everyone picking Jansen, he’s a deserving candidate, but myself, I go with Magill just barely over Rubby.

I mean BJ. I was talking since both seem to be out of favor with their respective clubs. Upton I kinda get, but I’m not sure about Rasmus. Is he just slumping and they don’t think his head is in the game?

For some reason
I thought this was going to be the post where Eric calls for James Loney to be traded this offseason.
There has to be some sucker
who will overvalue Loney’s defense and BA which would bring in a decent haul to LAD.
Of course, Ned is probably of the same camp, so there goes the motivation to move Loney.
by Michael White on Sep 1, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions
So far, calls have been made at various times here to trade Loney, Kemp, Ethier
and Martin (tho we know that won’t happen now). For a team that already has holes to fill next season and not a ton of money to do it. Just sayin’.

Doesn’t trading away inefficient players to bring in peices increase the chances of filling holes?
Loney is not a capable firstbaseman and will be too expensive. That hole needs filling.

Here’s the NEW video for Cee-lo’s awesome “Eff You” song, the video that the song deserves. Really charming, even.
