MiLB Dodger Recap 8/31 - Withrow Whirls a Winner

Some tidbits from the Isotopes Players Choice Awards

Russ Mitchell claimed team MVP accolades, while reliever Juan Perez was named Pitcher of the Year, John Lindsey was the PNM Power Hitter of the Year and selected Fan Favorite, Jamie Hoffmann took Defensive Player of the Year and Mr. Hustle honors, and J.D. Closser was named the team's Most Community-Minded player.

Russ Mitchell also won PCL Player of the Week:

Pacific Coast League
Russ Mitchell, Albuquerque
.517/.533/1.069, 15-for-29, 4 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 11 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 0 SB
Russ Mitchell, who's played all of his eight pro seasons in the Dodgers organization, boosted his batting average up to .325 this week, which puts him sixth in the PCL. His 153 hits are the third most in the league, and nobody's scored more than his 94 runs. He went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs in his first game of the week on Tuesday, and he hit safely in each of the week's games. He homered twice, doubled and scored three runs Wednesday, and he scored four more runs during another three-hit game Friday. Mitchell closed out the week by homering in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.

AAA –Isotopes fall 8 - 6, Hoffman hit a three run jack, driving in four runs on the day, Travis Denker hit his first Isotope home run. They also finished a game that started on July 30th. Final score 11 - 10 with Sellers driving in five runs.

AA – Trying to make up for lost time Chris Withrow pitched his 2nd consecutive solid game, going six innings, six hits, one walk, and six K's.  Only one walk in his last 13 innings, along with 11 K's. Gerry Sands hit his 16th home run in AA, and Pedro Baez collected two hits in first two AA at bats.

High A – 66ers lost 10 - 4 but have no fear, Preston Mattingly will be rejoining them for the rest of the year.

A – Loons break out the bats 21 hits, and 13 runs. Everyone in the outfield had two hits, Ruggiano had four hits, and Jeremy Wise had three hits. I must have missed the fact the Jeremy Wise has had an excellent second half. After putting up a paltry .689 OPS in the first half he has rebounded with a 1.039 OPS in the 2nd half. He's had three straight months with a slugging % over .500 which will get it done in the Midwest League. One other note, mammoth Chris Jacobs also had two hits and has finally pushed his average over .200. Jacobs doesn't play much but I've got him down with a nine game hitting streak. If he can finally move his batting practice power to the main field, he might be fun to watch.

its getting close...

so thoughts on pitcher of the year and hitter of the year in the system?

Rubb a dub dub and the Sandman?

Arguments can be made for Russ MItchell and Trayvon too.

Sandman for sure

Pitching is tough, Jansen might be in the equation.

Sands is my player of the year, hands down.

The pitcher of the year has a few candidates, though.

Matt Magill:
7-4 3.29 ERA 23 games 19 starts 120.1 innings 84 Hits 48 Runs 44 ER 12 HR 51 BB 129 Ks 1.12 WHIP

Carl Webster:
11-9 2.94 ERA 25 Games 22 Starts 125.1 Innings 116 Hits 54 Runs 41 ER 6 HR 52 BB 108 Ks 1.34 WHIP

Rubby De La Rosa:
Great Lakes – 4-1 3.19 ERA 14 Games 5 Starts 59.1 Innings 49 Hits 23 Runs 21 ER 3 HR 17 BB 55 Ks 1.11 WHIP
Chattanooga – 3-0 1.37 ERA 7 Games 7 Starts 46 Innings 32 Hits 10 Runs 7 ER 1 HR 21 BB 35 Ks 1.15 WHIP

Personally I’m going to go with Magill as our top SP this year because he was better than Webster (who I think did very well this year) and had 7 more starts than Rubby, even though Rubby put up better numbers overall. I could easily be persuaded to go with Rubby though, especially because he’s got 7 starts and 46 innings in AA where he’s been excellent.

I choose Magill (like I already said) because he started more games, 7 more actually. If that gap was closed I’d have taken Rubby. Though I could have easily gone with Rubby as well.

their innings are comparable though

125 to 105..not too much of a discrepency since Rubby started the season in great lakes late.

Russ Mitchell has had a great week

the only thing that can cap it off would be a promotion to the Dodgers. If it happens it will have been quite a 12 months for Mitchell.
1. Moved from 3rd to 1st
2. Removed from 40 man roster
2. Sent to AFL – Destroyed the league
3. Sent to AAA – Became a 3rd baseman again, and probably hit enough to not only get added back to the 40 man roster but make his way onto the Dodger major League roster. If neither happens I’m sure he’d get picked up in the Rule V draft, so no matter what happens for him as a Dodger he’s immeasurably improved his chances of being a major league baseball players compared to where he was sitting 12 months ago.

i don't remember it, either

I think our previous thoughts about him as a real prospect would have been elevated quite a bit if he had been on the 40 man roster…

I thought he was, could be wrong

I hope Withrow pitches in one more good game.

I hope he lights Spring Training on fire and is ready to be a 22 year old MLB #4 starter.

Needless to say

I’m WAY overexcited about a potential 2012 rotation of Kershaw, Billingsley, Rubby, Withrow, [Insert generic scrap heap veteran here. Probably Randy Wolf].
