Dodgers Week 23 In Review: The Road Woes Continue
The Dodgers didn't do much on the field, but they still had a few memorable moments for the week. John Lindsey, after 6,342 minor league plate appearances, got his call to the major leagues, and on Sunday collected his first major league hit. Russ Mitchell has struggled to the tune of 0-for-14 to start his big league career, but collected an RBI on Sunday as well with a sacrifice fly. Kenley Jansen picked up his first major league win in relief on Saturday night.
The Dodgers continued their second half road struggles with a 2-5 start to their 10-game road trip. They were 21-21 away from Dodger Stadium heading into the All-Star break, but since are 9-21 on the road.
Dodger Batter of the Week: This award gets split between James Loney and Jay Gibbons, who both paced the Dodger offense this week. Loney had a triple and four doubles in the week, giving him a career-high 40 two-baggers on the year. Gibbons hit two home runs, continuing his so far successful audition for a spot on next year's club.
This award does not go to Ryan Theriot, who was 0-for-21 on the week, with three walks, although since he only struck out twice that means all 19 balls he hit into play turned into outs.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Clayton Kershaw had the best start of the week, allowing just two runs in seven innings Tuesday in San Diego. However, he was up against Mat Latos, who only allowed one run for the win. Honorable mention goes to Kenley Jansen, who struck out seven in his four innings of work, and got his first major league win.
Week 23 Record: 2-5
19 runs scored (2.71 per game)
25 runs allowed (3.57 per game)
.377 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 71-73
606 runs scored (4.21 per game)
610 runs allowed (4.24 per game)
.497 pythagorean winning percentage (72-72)
Transactions:
- Monday: The Dodgers recalled John Ely, Jon Link, and Chin-Lung Hu, and purchase the contracts of John Lindsey and Russ Mitchell. They needed to make one move to make room on the 40-man roster, so they transferred Russell Martin to the 60-day disabled list.
- Tuesday: The Dodgers designated Ronnie Belliard for assignment, and purchased the contract of outfielder Trent Oeltjen from Triple A.
Game Results:
- Monday: Padres 4, Dodgers 2
- Tuesday: Padres 2, Dodgers 1
- Wednesday: Padres 4, Dodgers 0
- Thursday: Astros 3, Dodgers 2
- Friday: Dodgers 4, Astros 2
- Saturday: Dodgers 6, Astros 3
- Sunday: Astros 7, Dodgers 4
Upcoming Week: The Dodgers take Monday off, then finish their road trip with three games in San Francisco, before coming home for three with the Rockies.

What a sad week
Dodgers suck.
Giants leading the division.
Happy Monday, indeed!
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
Would love to see some best guesses as to whom we do and don’t offer arbitration to. Theriot would appear to be a close call.
Offer arbitration:
Kuo
Billingsley
Loney
Theriot
Don’t offer:
Martin
Sherrill
Kuroda
Lilly
Padilla
Dotel
Arb-eligibles already locked up for next year:
Broxton
Ethier
Kemp
I think they try to work out deals with Lilly, Kuroda and possibly Martin, but outside of arbitration.
I did this from memory, so I may be wrong on the contract status on some of the players or I missed somebody.
by Michael White on Sep 13, 2010 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions
I don’t think Theriot is a close call because there is no real depth there. They didn’t call up DeJesus and they can’t have old man Carroll being the every day starter.
by Michael White on Sep 13, 2010 7:53 AM PDT up reply actions
With Theriot, Blake, Loney, and whoever our catcher is, or infield offense is going to be a real weak spot next year.

if you crunch the numbers, would league average from every position look like a champion-level team?
you mean OPS+ 100 from everyone? I would think that would be a terrible lineup. Deep, sure. But still not very intimidating.
Per B-R.com, League Average OPS+ is 96. If you were to include players from all of MLB and make an actual lineup out of it, you’d end up with something like: Player, Position (OPS+)
Scott Podsednik LF (99)
Placido Polanco 2B (98)
Derrek Lee 1B (96)
Juan Uribe SS (97)
Brandon Inge 3B (96)
Jose Guillen RF (99)
Drew Stubbs CF (93)
Kurt Suzuki C (86)
Lots of other players closer to 96, but this is probably your most feasible lineup for the 2010 most average team. I based it on position, not necessarily being closest to league average.
Link: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2010-advanced-batting.shtml
By reference, a starting rotation at league average (ERA+ 101) would be:
Fausto Carmona (101)
Bronson Arroyo (102)
Jason Hammel (102)
Jon Garland (102)
Wade Davis (99)
Do you think that team competes?
Do you think that team competes?
Maybe, if their home field is Petco Park.

I think he meant lineup only
because, by definition, a team full of average players would be, well, average, and finish 81-81.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions
No
I’m saying league average by position. League Average 1B, 2B, etc. Combined with League Average starters and League Average ’pen.
Then yeah, Eric would be right and they should finish somewhere around .500 give or take a couple games due to luck.
Though, looking at the OPS+ numbers, you could make a pretty good lineup by just being a couple points over league average. Guys like Matt Kemp, Carlos Pena, Mark Reynolds creep in at 102-103, while with the pitchers you get Chad Billingsley at 105.
Also, what about Padilla. I think they will try to bring him back at around the same salary with maybe a little raise. He had a good season, but character issues and a late season injury may dampen his value a bit.
Even with Padilla arguably playing himself back into the Dodgers price range with injuries (as Eric has put it) I think the injuries might be cause for concern with the Dodgers. He’s not getting any younger, and he was either injured or ineffetive for most of the season.
I wouldn’t be shocked, but Padilla would have to come back very cheap (IMO.)
by Michael White on Sep 13, 2010 8:10 AM PDT up reply actions
I think it is more and more likely they offer arb to Lilly. He is only 8-10, but given how well he has pitched there will be enough interest in him to get a multi-year deal. I think there is a ridk that Lilly accepts, but the club wants him back badly enough that I think arb will be offered anyway.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions
I think they offer Kuroda arbitration for the same reasons.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
I tend to agree; I think they will try to work out deals with both before the arb deadline (December 1)
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions
If per Kuroda's contract
he “may become a free agent after contract expires”, can the Dodgers offer him arb? Or are we supposing that that clause just means he isn’t bound to the team?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
by David Young on Sep 13, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
They can offer him arb
But it is the type of arbitration you would offer to a pending free agent, not that of a player with at least 3 but less than 6 years of service time.
In other words, Kuroda will have the opportunity to decline.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
And
no 20% rule either. The Dodgers could offer Kuroda any arb offer they choose.
Obviously, if they go too low, Kuroda just accepts, submits $14M or so, and wins.

Technically
The Dodgers will tender contracts to Loney, Kuo, Billingsley and Theriot, under Mike’s reasoning, they will non-tender Martin and Sherrill. I think Dotel has an option that they won’t pick up. Kuroda’s situation is different, I think the Dodgers could tender him a contract and then he would be under their control. Lilly is really the only player (outside of Weaver, Reed Johnson, and maybe Jay Gibbons) who is a true free agent that the Dodgers could offer arbitration to and if he refuses, becomes a free agent. Well there is also Barajas and Pods too.
re: Kuroda
I didn’t think of it that way, but I think you’re right. So basically, if the Dodgers want him back, Kuroda’s choices are either signing with LAD or returing to Japan?
by Michael White on Sep 13, 2010 8:12 AM PDT up reply actions
I think
he is in the similar position as any arb eligible player except that he can’t refuse arbitration if the Dodgers tender him a contract but he could just “retire” and return to Japan. And since he would have to make over $10M next year if the Dodgers tender him a deal, it is more likely he does not get tendered. In that case, he becomes a free agent.
I thought Kuroda was different than Saito, in that he could become a FA after his current contract. Anyway, I always got the feeling that he would be returning to Japan after getting his taste of the bigs.
According to
Kuroda may become a free agent after contract expires

I wish we were celebrating closing in on a division title instead of celebrating John Lindsey’s lifetime achievement.
Podsednick has a player option?
"We were never friends"
From MLBTRs list of teams who will have interest in Cliff Lee:
Dodgers – Ted Lilly, Vicente Padilla and Hiroki Kuroda hit free agency and the Dodgers have to replace that production somehow.
Yeah, all true. But, I’d rather replace Lilly, Padilla and Kuroda with Lilly, Padilla and Kuroda for the same annual price and half the years. Cliff Lee + 2 replacement level starts < 3 average-above average starters personally. Also, how about fixing the offense instead.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Because the quickest way to make the offense look good is #3 starter John Ely.

Reg: I don’t understand your comment.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Our pitching will be awful in 2011 so it needs to be fixed just as much as the offense. Probably more so.
by regfairfield on Sep 13, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions
Dodgers don’t have the money or prospects to get these kinds of fixes.
Next year will probably suck, but 2012 is where we turn the corner.
Like I always say
if you’re punting, kick it hard.
If next year is going to be ugly as I suspect, I’d much rather sign a bunch of non-tender candidates and trade who I can for some better AA prospects and really shoot for 2012/2013 to be a coming out party. That being said, “trade who I can” does not include Kershaw, Kemp or Billingsley.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
I agree with this. I wouldn’t totally write off 2011, but it doesn’t look good right now. Identify the players to keep and then fill out the roster as cheaply as possible to prepare for 2012.
The main reason I do not completely write off 2011 is because I think that the division will come back to near .500 and be a real low caliber shootout.

exactly what I was saying. Would it be cool to see Lee, Kershaw, Billingsley top 3? Sure. Would it be cool to see Lee, Kershaw, Billingsley, Ely and Monk? Hell no.
Especially if having Lee, Kershaw, Billingsley, Ely and Monk also means we’re stuck with our current offense.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Acquire the best players you possibly can worry about the details later.
If we acquire a bunch of mediocrity and suck where does that leave us. Nowhere but a year of development. If you get Cliff Lee and suck, well at least you have Cliff Lee. You can’t win without great players so get them when you can.
Of course this is all irrelevant since Neds gonna defer a shit load of money to buy our way in to 2011 with veteranness.
by regfairfield on Sep 13, 2010 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions
It’s going to take a couple of years to fill all the holes. This winter, they should sign the kinds of guys who are most likely to be productive 2-3-4 years out.
That’s position players, not pitchers in their mid-30s.
(This winter is also a good one to buy out Kershaw and Billingsley’s arb years, if they don’t blow the budget on free agents.)
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

They also got him with the intention of flipping him. We’d be getting him with the intention of keeping and using him. Well, they probably didn’t expect their offense to be historically terrible, but regardless they knew it was a one year rental at maximum unless they then resigned him.

Can’t believe how close this is. the difference between getting who we want and whoever falls to us in the draft may come down to a game. Since we did well last year, we’d have to be extra bad to get a good draft pick, thought that doesn’t appear to be too much of a stretch since we were two last innings away from getting swept by the Astros. Right now we sit at the 16th pick but are one game away from the 13th pick and 4 from the 11th. Kinda crazy how tight the mediocre teams are.

It’s definitely not as big as say 5 to 1, but I feel like it’s a big jump. Even looking at (SSS) this past year’s draft, the 11th pick could have gotten us Grandal. I don’t know, I just think it gives you more options. Granted, anyone you take at 16 should still project as a good player, but I feel like every pick we move up is the opportunity to take someone just that much better. Plus, it would affect every other round as well.

In the end did they get as much production out of their system as we did this year? Probably not but Latos was pretty awesome.
by meercatjohn on Sep 13, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
Probably not
The Dodgers still had Chad, Clayton, Kuo, Broxton (still has value), Kemp, Loney, and Jansen to name a few.
The Padres did have Latos, Hundley and Headley along with some of their outfielders Venable but most of their team came from the outside.
It still remains pretty clear that no matter how much you think teams win by being home grown, at most you tend to find teams with 3 regulars (at most 4), you have better luck with your pitching staff (see Giants and Rockies).

Hey, Jerry Sands was named to the BA Minor League All-Star Team
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2010/2610648.html
LF JERRY SANDS
DODGERS
Team: Double-A Chattanooga (Southern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .301/.395/.586 (151-for-502), 35 HR, 28 2B, 5 3B, 93 RBIs, 102 R, 73 BB, 123 SO, 18-for-20 SB
The Scoop: The Dodgers’ 25th round pick in 2008 from Division II Catawba (N.C.), Sands’ career got off to a sputtering start, but he learned to shorten up his stroke and had one of 2010’s best breakout seasons. Sands blitzed Midwest League pitching in the season’s first half, belting 18 home runs in 69 games for low Class A Great Lakes before a promotion straight to Double-A in June. Sands’ average dropped off against Southern Leaguers, but his discerning eye at the plate didn’t go anywhere, nor did his power. Sands hit another 17 homers after his promotion, enough to finish fourth in the SL for the entire year and tied for third in the minors with 35.
In that he will be ranked in the top 50 in BA rankings?
I think he has a chance

In the previous five, Belliard started three times at 1B, and Loney twice. In one of those two, Belliard was at second base.

to protect them from the rule 5 draft? How many 40-man members come off the roster because they are FA? Have to seen how much need the Dodgers have first.

who is playing in the Arizona Fall League is the only new player, I don’t think they will add Scott Van Slyke to the roster.
But I would say it is likely Lindsey goes back into the pool since they can always offer him another invite to Spring Training. Mitchell they might protect.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 13, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Lindsey will probably be free to sign with whatever team he feels gives him the best shot to get more ML playing time.
Only if the Dodgers release him. But if he stays on the roster, he could be looking at another year in Albuquerque. I don’t see him sticking, though.
I doubt they can option Lindsey
he is probably well past those days.
by bhsportsguy on Sep 13, 2010 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions
He has zero major league service and has never been put on a 40-man roster. As far as I can tell, he has three options remaining.

Yep
If they keep him on the 40-man, he can be optioned up to three times. Hard to see that happening, but if they choose to do so the Dodgers can keep him that way.

Right
He will be removed from the 40-man at some point in November, if not sooner.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Lindsey is probably a FA after this season, like he has been for a number of seasons and will likely get invited to ST by someone.
He would have been a minor league free agent if he wasn’t on the 40-man. But now he’s owned by the Dodgers.
by silverwidow on Sep 13, 2010 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions
OK, so now is he under team control for 6 years now that he was called up? For that to remain true we would have to keep him on the 40 man which seems unlikely.
Exactly. As Eric said, he will likely be removed by November.
by silverwidow on Sep 13, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions
If the Dodgers somehow keep Lindsey on the 40 man, he’s looking at a pretty big pay raise to what he is used to. I think there’s something in the CBA that all players who have ML time but aren’t on the 25 get paid around the $60K to $70K range.
This year, the minimum is $65k for those with at least one day of MLB service time or not on their first MLB contract (so, next year, a guy like Trayvon Robinson).
Next year the minimum will be at least $65k, but will be adjusted with a COLA, based on the CPI-W in November 2010 compared to November 2008.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 13, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I should add
this is only the minimum for a major league split contract. If/when Lindsey is off the 40-man roster, this will not apply.

D-Backs are also looking at Angel scouting chief Eddie Bane for their GM position according to Rosenthal. This is in addition to Logan White, DeJon Watson and Kevin Towers.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
by David Young on Sep 13, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions
One thing to note
The Diamond Backs will be paying their former GM until 2014 so expect this hire to be someone willing to take smaller salary, now they probably could offer less to White, Watson and Bane but Towers will want a pretty good salary to be their GM.
by bhsportsguy on Sep 13, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Like I said above
Towers will cost more than the others and remember that Hall knows White from his Dodger days and also probably still has contacts at Chavez Ravine.
I was thinking that too, but I also assume MLB GMs only get paid 500k-1mil a year, so I’m not sure how big of a deal that is. I mean, that’s the difference of two minor league signings or some other middling bench player versus a rookie at league minimum if you really had to take his salary out of the team’s bottom line.
I wouldn’t either, but they are going to have to do that (and in fact, currently are with DiPoto). The only thing that changes is how much you are paying the second guy. I just don’t think the difference between a low salary guy like Watson and Kevin Towers can be any more than 1 million. Granted, it’s still a million bucks and it’s a million of someone else’s bucks, but I don’t think it’ll be a sum that will keep them from hiring who they want.
According to
MSTI:
The Dodgers’ magic number is 9 … for their official elimination from the race…. it’s an important milestone – Torre’s said repeatedly he won’t make an announcement on his future until that happens.

To be fair, he hit into some bad luck. That’s the problem with baseball more than any other sport- you can look at a small sample and look like you’ve had a horrible month, or a great one, when fate was more of a factor than your performance. (Recall last April how Mark Loretta’s stats made him look like the greatest pinch hitter in the history of the universe for about 3 weeks!)
I’d say the same for Russ Mitchell. He’s had some good swings, and nothing but a measly RBI to show for it. I have a hope/hunch that his luck will change in San Francisco. And not a moment too soon.

—The Diamondbacks appear to have five candidates for general manager. The word all along has been that Arizona managing general partner Ken Kendrick wants Kevin Towers, while president and CEO Derrick Hall wants Logan White. If those prove to be the two finalists…the Mets should be so lucky as to have two such good finalists.
Oh, and to answer a question from JE in the last item: Towers never would’ve signed his consultant deal with the Yankees if it hadn’t given him full freedom to explore whatever job opportunities he desired.

Any? I don’t like it.
I meant it as, if we were a Cliff Lee away from being World Series contenders, and they asked for Chris Withrow and Dee Gordon, I’d do it.
If White takes the job and we call him about Stephen Drew, Mark Reynolds, et al, and he asks for Zach Lee as part of the package, I’d say something to the effect of “sure, but you’re picking up more salary”.
I know we’re just spitballing here, but instead of asking for more money, the prudent thing is to negotiate the prospect price down.
Depends on the situation. You draft/sign more prospects every year. If they want Single A player X over Single A player B, and that is the only thing stopping the deal, I do it. I’d then want more salary paid so I could go get a different player also or use it to sign an over slot guy later.
If all else fails, we could trade our 30 million dollar a year player for 50 inner cities baseball fields.
Ive been trying
anything new? I heard Nick Johnson was really trying to recruit him, and that Josiah moved up his visit

yep
They play on the same AAU (drew gooden soldiers lol) but Nick is hard in his ear.
Miller had an In home with him last thursday. Turner took an official to UCLA this weekend. Tonight, Self from Kansas is making an in home with Turner and his mom.
His mom says he can commit at any moment so everyone is watching everything really closely. The next big hurdle is Self with the in home. If he doesn’t commit after that, he comes to Tucson this weekend with Nick Johnson on their official visits together.
That, along with the insane atmopshere with the Iowa/Arizona game, I think we have an amazing shot…if we can get past sleazy billie tonight.
also
They are looking good on the Quinn Cook front too. He’s at Oak Hill next year with Sidiki so he’s got him in his ear all season as well.
Didn't Cook suffer a major knee injury
a couple weeks ago?
by SeanMillerSavior on Sep 13, 2010 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions
it wasn't a complete tear. partially torn ACL
but he’s still going to be heavily recruited. and he won’t miss the whole year.
I hope U of A lands
Miller is really putting up a hell of a recruiting class for the 2011 season

MIller's also chasing some bigs
in Angelo Chol and Amir Williams… but long shots i think,
but yeah, if you can add turner to johnson and johnson..thats HUGE.
That would be amazing
Gotta convince D will to stay another season. Unless he’s really improved his mid-range game, I think it would be a huge mistake for him to leave early

Pretty funny
given your new profile photo. Dunno who that is, but she seems a little, um, I dunno – liked your cheerleaders photo better.

You mean the cheerleader??
Oh… That picture was great too…

What crossed the line?
The Kelly Brook (who’s she?) photo in lingerie that jojo posted? At least they were all minimize-able.

Jay Bruce returns after 12 games

Nadal/Djokovic
resumed after a long rain delay. It’s no longer on CBS. Now ESPN2.
Last time I played tennis in the rain
I broke my thumb

I've never really played tennis
I had a friend that was really good in HS and I would hit tennis balls into the fence off a tee while he practiced.
About my extent of work on the hard court.
Actual number is 9/95.
Ray Rice has 11 rushes in the first half. Not terrible. They turned the ball over a couple of times. The Jets had the ball for almost 19 minutes in the first half.
I don’t have Ray Rice either. I am betting you do!
I don't actually
I basically just need Jamal Charles to get on the scoreboard to win in one league. I got blown out in my main one, but nothing I could do facing Chris Johnson and Ocho Stinko yesterday.
I am getting killed in both
Yahoo leagues I’m in.
The money league I play in I am up 37 and he has Rivers playing tonight. He had both Johnsons (Calvin and Andre). They didn’t piss a drop. My Rb’s played bad until Mendenhall broke that long run. (Michael Turner)
I had the Johnsons last year. I have Andre in my small money league, but I’ll win anyways in that one, thanks to Mendenhall as well.
In my big money league I got complete no shows from Crabtree and Jonathan Stewart at the flex. I may bench both and go to Garcon and Mike Williams. MJD and Addai not scoring didn’t help either.
Wow I'm late to the party
just read that Padilla was shut down for the rest of the year due to a neck injury?
Not a lot of people on here tonight. They are all with their wives. “Baby, I don’t give a crap about the Dodger game. I want to spend quality time with you.”
:)
Before todays game, fis FIP was under 3 and XFIP just above 4. Oops.

Rockies
Cannot be in sole position of first place on Friday.

Not
Saying it is must win but the Rockies probably need to win next two or their chances at the playoffs will be diminished.
