Kershaw Great For Eight As Dodgers Top Diamondbacks
Before the game, on Think Blue TV, Eric Karros named Clayton Kershaw as both his 2010 Dodger pitcher of the year and MVP, and tonight Kershaw showed why, with a dominant performance in the Dodgers' 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks, in the opener of the three-game series in Phoenix.
For a while, it looked like Kershaw would get his second shutout in three starts. He was cruising through eight innings, allowing only two hits to Kelly Johnson, while striking out eight. Entering the 9th inning, up 3-0, Kershaw had thrown just 93 pitches. However, a single by Chris Young and a double by old friend Tony Abreu brought the hook, as well as the first run for Arizona.
After inducing a popup, Kenley Jansen allowed the tying run to reach base when he walked Stephen Drew. But then, Jansen reared back and did what Jansen does best: strike guys out. Jansen got Adam LaRoche swinging and pinch hitter Ryan Church looking to end the game. It was the second save of the season for Jansen.
All in all, it was a magnificent night of pitching, as the Dodgers won their second straight game by a 3-1 score.
Notes
- Kershaw passed the 200 inning mark, making him the sixth LA Dodger to do so at age 22 or younger.
- A.J. Ellis went 1-for-2 with two walks, and now has an on-base percentage of .690 (20-for-29) since August 22.
- Reed Johnson hit his second home run of the season, and is hitting .313/.340/.479 against southpaws this year
- John Lindsey is expected to start tomorrow at first base for the Dodgers, with Russ Mitchell likely starting in the outfield on Sunday, writes Ken Gurnick of MLB.com
Tomorrow a pair of 2009 Birmingham Barons face off as John Ely battles Dan Hudson.
WP - Clayton Kershaw (13-10): 8+ IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 9 strikeouts
LP - Barry Enright (6-6): 8 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts
Sv - Kenley Jansen (2): 1 IP, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts

Great win for Kershaw. For the Dodgers. For me.

And then there were 13
the Angels were officially eliminated, with their loss coupled with the Rangers’ win.
Only one can be eliminated tomorrow - Oakland
Texas can clinch the AL West with a win tomorrow in Oakland.
Philadelphia can clinch the NL East with a win and Atlanta loss.
The Yankees can only clinch a playoff spot this weekend if they win both remaining games at home this weekend. Connected to that Tampa Bay can only clinch on Sunday if their wins/Boston losses equal 3 this weekend.
The Reds also need help to clinch this weekend, a loss or two by the Cardinals and win or two against the Padres.
The National League West and Wild Card cannot be clinched until the middle of next week at the earliest and right now, I think that will not happen.

When I saw Birmingham Barrons the first thing I thought of was Michael Jordan
and how bad he was at baseball. A TSL of .202/.289/.266, 30 steals and 18 CS.
He also played with Steve Sax on that team, at the end of Sax’s career. Under manager Terry Francona. Those are the only people of interest I found affiliated with the 1994 Birmingham Barons.
Please don’t call me Jay Marriotti.

In my office I have a photo of him striking out in Jacksonville. Friend of mine was a reported in JAX then.

he almost has an ops over 690 now
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Dodgers 11-2 against the Snakes this year
Now about those 28 other teams…

First things first
Clayton Kershaw is the mother f*cking man! Way to go CK.
Nextly (that’s right, I said that unreal word), fuck you Kemp. I understand this season means nothing anymore, but Kershaw didn’t deserve anything less than your absolute best on that shit you pulled that can loosely be called jogging. Thanks for costing him the shutout. Matt Kemp was my favorite Dodger to start the year and he’s just making it so hard for me to continue liking him.
Even still, 1 ER 9 Ks 0 BBs 4 hits in 8 innings is tremendous work, way to go again.

I'm also glad to see I'm getting daily shoutouts from Keithc :)
Always glad to see my name when i am rooting through the stuff I missed for the day, lol.

Triple posting!
I got a new hat tonight, and yes Eric, it is all navy blue, thank you for asking. Had to go to Thousand Oaks to get it from Lids because the store in the Simi Valley mall didn’t have a hat bigger than 7 1/2, when I’ve got the biggest hat size you can have without taking god damned HGH (at least 7 5/8, my last hat was 7 3/4).
My cousin got a black Dodger hat with the LA red, and another one in dark gray which looked pretty cool. I hope this is sitting well with you, Eric :) I’m sure we can all just forget about it while having a nice Dr Pepper one day.

Update re Instructional and Arizona Fall League rosters
The regular instructional league roster consists of 45 players, including this year’s first-round pick, Zach Lee; the 2008 first-round pick, Ethan Martin; and the pitcher that everyone in the organization seems to be talking about lately, Rubby De La Rosa.

Man was I wrong.
Never thought San Diego, San Francisco, Texas, Cinncinati or the Rays would be in the playoffs. I remember at the beginning of the season when we lost the series to the Nats and Reds saying they were the bottom dwellers, and I for one kept calling for an ACE. Turns out, we had a great starting rotation, and didn’t need help in the pitching department at all. I also said that we would never need a hitter. I also said Manny would hit .330, with 25 homers and 90 RBIs. I even said that the Colletti diss on Kemp would have no affect on him.
Man, was I wrong on all counts.
Does a Kershaw extension come into play this offseason?
If you want any kind of bargain, I think you have to do it this year.
Probably not.
Kershaw will take the Dodgers to the cleaners from 2012-14 and he has every right to do so.

If they make a fair offer
He will have to consider it because its guaranteed money. He only need look at his own teammates to see the risks you carry when you go from year to year. And I am not sure he has the right to take them to the cleaners but I expect that it is a bit of hyperbole.
Kershaw strikes me as being somewhat down to earth so I would expect he would listen to a multi-year deal but it would probably have to be something that offered him near $1M for his third year in order to be within reason.
by bhsportsguy on Sep 25, 2010 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions
The only Dodger who should have taken the team to the cleaners was Martin.
But I hear he gets a deal on a particular cleaning process.
Thus endeth the dry cleaning puns portion of today.

We have to see what constitutes a fair offer. If the Dodgers put a 5 year/$30M deal on the table (buying out 1 FA), that’s probably not a smart business decision for the player.
I think the Dodgers have to offer an average annual salary of at least 9 million for the pre-FA years and probably 18M for year 5.
So I think a fair offer in his case would be 5/54.

That's way too high
Through those same 5 seasons (1 pre arb, 3 arb years, and 1 FA year):
Verlander: $44.275m (includes signing bonus)
Felix: $42.84m (includes signing bonus)

I saw Rosenthal’s tweets. He cleared up some confusion, saying players can reject waiver claims when on release waivers (not so with outright waivers). Good to know.

That would make sense
That they would have the option to become free agents.
