Ely Looks To Keep Runs Off The Board Early Against D-Backs
John Ely has had trouble of late thanks in part to allowing runs early. He has allowed a run (or more) in the first or second inning in five of his last seven starts.

If Ely can get through the first two frames unscathed, I like those odds. Ely has faced Arizona twice this season, and has allowed two runs in 13 innings, with two walks and 11 strikeouts.
Dan Hudson has been terrific since being acquired from the White Sox for Edwin Jackson on July 30. Hudson is 6-1 with a 1.65 ERA, 3.26 FIP, and 3.65 xFIP in 10 starts, and he's averaging over seven innings per outing. With Arizona, he has allowed three runs just once, and even though he lost that game he had no walks and 10 strikeouts. He has 65 strikeouts against just 14 walks as a Diamondback.
Notes
- The Dodgers have won 11 of 13 against the Diamondbacks this season, including six of seven at Chase FIeld
- John Lindsey is expected to start at first base today
- Kenley Jansen in his last eight games has pitched a shutout of sorts: 9 IP, 2 hits, 2 walks, 12 strikeouts
- Ronald Belisario in September has pitched well: 9 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts
- Mark Reynolds saw his average dip below .200 last night, as he is now hitting .199 with 206 strikeouts. It should be noted, however, that Reynolds has a higher OPS+ (99) than Casey Blake (95) and is tied with James Loney.
- On this date in 1974, Dr. Frank Jobe performed ligament transplant surgery on Dodgers' pitcher Tommy John, the first ever surgery of its kind. John would miss the 1975 season, but would go on to pitch 14 more seasons and win 164 games after the surgery.

Things I didn't know.
There is an actual state law prohibiting CSUs to try to join the UC system after UC Santa Barbara made the jump.

Wouldn’t the actual law just be the Legislature’s ability to block such a move by refusing to fund it? Only two CSUs have ever switched: LA and SB.

It’s not like a CSU or UC can switch affiliations like they’re moving from the Big West to the Pac 10. All the state has to do is tell the college, “We can’t afford it.”

by Bob Timmermann on Sep 25, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure, why not.
I just didn’t get why being a good Christian bought Tebow so much hype. College is if anything a place where you can do stuff and have little repercussions for it. Of course its different for athletes, but I saw no reason to not take advantage of that kinda heat if you can.
That Tebow had the rep for eschewing that college lifestyle was what brought him the hype.

Minor league park factors have been updated for 2010. What we can learn from them:
Albuquerque might as well be on the moon with a 1.23 park factor (second highest in minors is 1.13, Coors is 1.16). It’s at the point where I’d ignore any offensive performances from our AAA guys, but it’s gonna be awesome when Jerry Sands hits 80 home runs in April.
Inland Empire is a vicious pitchers park, and suppresses home runs more than any park but Savannah. This gives a little boost to some prospects that have lost their luster like Austin Gallagher, but it gives me really little hope for Nate Eovalidi and Ethan Martin.
it’s gonna be awesome when Jerry Sands hits 80 home runs in April.
That made me laugh.
by Michael White on Sep 25, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Isn't the problem with IE that there are so many hitter's parks, like Lancaster,
in the rest of the league? And aren’t one-year park factors a bit SSS? B-R uses three-year factors for adjusting for parks, such as their OPS+ and ERA+ calculations.

From Ken Rosenthal:
Angels manager Mike Scioscia’s ten-year contract extension with the Angels that he signed in 2009 is worth a whopping $50MM. Rosenthal had the dollar amount confirmed by two different sources. Scioscia can opt out after 2015, and each of the last three seasons is worth $6MM. That’s one pricey manager.
