Dodgers Week 25 In Review: A Bad Break

The penultimate week of the season for the Dodgers had a tinge of sadness to it, as John Lindsey had his season end eight days early when he broke his left hand. This was the week the Dodgers were officially eliminated, and they will need a perfect final week to avoid a losing season.

The Dodgers had three different pitchers this week throw at least seven innings in a start without issuing an unintentional walk.

The Dodgers have lost eight straight three-game series, and are 8-19 in their last 27 games. After starting the season 25-8 against the NL West this year, the Dodgers are 10-23 within the division since.

Dodger Batter of the WeekRod Barajas started twice, and made the most of it, with a double and a home run, driving in three runs while hitting .333/.429/1.000. Andre Ethier was the best regular at .263/.333/.421, but that doesn't seem award worthy to me.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Clayton Kershaw and Hiroki Kuroda each allowed one run in eight innings this week, but this award goes to Kershaw. Both starters had no unintentional walks, but Kershaw had nine strikeouts to Kuroda's four, and Kershaw took a shutout into the ninth inning.

Honorable mentions go to Chad Billingsley, who rebounded from a bad start against San Diego to fan 13 Diamondbacks for a 1.28 FIP on the week, and Hong-Chih Kuo, who faced three batters and struck them all out.

Week 25 Record:  2-4
13 runs scored (2.17 per game)
21 runs allowed (3.50 per game)
.294 pythagorean winning percentage

Season Record:  75-81
637 runs scored (4.08 per game)
668 runs allowed (4.28 per game)
.478 pythagorean winning percentage (75-81)

Transactions

Sunday: The Dodgers traded minor leaguer Preston "son of Don" Mattingly to the Indians for minor league outfielder Ramon Peña. Did this premature tweet by Preston hasten his departure? Perhaps that is too far-fetched a scenario. Or is it?

Game Results:

Upcoming Week:  The Dodgers end their season with a trip to Colorado, hopefully to eliminate the Rockies, followed by a home series with Arizona.

I don't think I have seen

an inning where you had two back to back base runners steal second and third and then score.

Find the trend...Rivera pitching and Posada catching

- J. Lowrie flied out to right
- R. Kalish singled to shallow center
- R. Kalish stole second
- R. Kalish stole third
- B. Hall singled to shallow left, R. Kalish scored
- M. Lowell hit for L. Anderson
- B. Hall stole second
- B. Hall stole third
- M. Lowell hit sacrifice fly to deep center, B. Hall scored
- M. Scutaro flied out to right center

Don't you know

Robinson Cano.

I am absolutely convinced that one of the back stories of the whole PED era was its affect on relief pitching, in particular, closers.

Gotta love that LT

Rivera and Pabelbon both go out with no decisions.

And now the Joba Chamberlain will now try to keep the Red Sox at bay.

It’s hard to believe his value is so low right now.

You realize he still throws high 90s and he was still throwing incredibly effectively until July, right?

Jets!

My football pool is looking very good now :)

One guy and myself left, both picked the Packers, the tie breakers is the total points of the game; I picked 51 and he picked 52. I’m liking my chances :D

Bad break dude. He was closer on the 58 yarder than he was the chip shot to end the game.

Once the Red Sox are eliminated

The Yankees and Rays will both be in the playoffs and similar to the Dodger/Padre result in 2006, the Rays only need to be assured of a tie since they hold the tie breaker in their head to head series.

Funny (or not so) funny thing about Billingsley

Is that alot of his best games in his career have turned out to be Dodger losses.

BTW

I am happy for Vlad, both he and Jim Thome were sent off to ply their trades elsewhere and now they are both heading to the playoffs.

Billingsley and Kershaw

Both rate in the top 10 in the NL in FIP (amongst starters) at 3.15 and 3.14 respectively. Billingsley, Kershaw and Kuroda are all in the top 20 in the NL in xFIP at 3.86, 3.82, and 3.60 respectively. Roy Halladay is the only pitcher in the NL with an xFIP under 3.00 (2.95.) Hard not to think that the Dodgers wasted a monster year from these 3 pitchers.

by Michael White on Sep 27, 2010 6:19 AM PDT reply actions

So is Chad’s ERA to blame for BAD defense, BABIP, or a combination?

"We were never friends"

by delias man on Sep 27, 2010 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Hard to say it’s bad luck since his ERA of 3.65 is outperforming his xFIP of 3.86. His HR rate is insane this year as his HR/9 is down to 0.39 compared to a previous career best in 2008 of 0.63. It doesn’t seem like he’s giving up materially less fly balls (31.7% which is almost the same as 2008,) just the ones he does give up are staying in the park. That being said, his BABIP is .314 compared to .294 last season. Basically, you can say he is getting lucky with keeping the ball in the park, but unlucky with balls that do stay in the park. His LD% is steady and even improved some, so the high BABIP is probably a result of some bad defense. I believe CK is the only guy on the staff with an ERA better than his peripherals so it’s probably safe to say that the Dodger defense is doing their pitching staff no favors.

I think his FIP is unsustainable since he probably should have given up more homeruns, but that’s because I am an xFIP advocate. Those who aren’t could point to Chad’s tERA of 3.31 which tracks much closer to his FIP.

Don't worry

Frank and Jamie are only $300 Million apart in the settlement talks. Shouldn’t be a problem.

by BFDC on Sep 27, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Can you imagine a team run by a poorer Frank? How about $300million poorer?

On the flip side, Ned Colletti was on the radio the other day saying that he’s been told he’ll have some financial flexibility this offseason. Who knows what that means, but at least he didn’t say it’d be 2010 Part II

Believe this was brought up this week

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/09/offseason-dates-moved-up.html

Instead of the typical 15-day free agent filing period following the World Series, it will be five days.

Typically the deadline for a team to offer arbitration to its own free agents has been December 1st; it’s now November 23rd.

December 7th has been the deadline for free agents to accept or decline arbitration offers from their old teams; it’s now November 30th.

December 12th has been the non-tender deadline; it’s now December 2nd.

The above dates are confirmed. On the unconfirmed side, there is word that the Rule 5 draft may be moved to November 20th. The Rule 5 draft typically marks the end of the Winter Meetings, but that gathering takes place from December 6-9 this year in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The goal here, according to Stark, is to lengthen the offseason free agent negotiating period, resulting in fewer unsigned players in February and March.
