Baseball America Top 20 Pioneer League
Last year BA ignored the huge performance of league MVP Brian Cavazos-Galvez, and the best hitter in the league Jerry Sands when they compiled their top 20 list. The only Raptor to make the list was Brett Wallach. Here is the link to my report last year.
This year BA was more generous to the Raptors with Leon Landry (4th), league MVP Jake Lemmerman (6th), and Garrett Gould (13th). For all the fanfare Gould got when he signed last year, that was not a very impressive showing by him. I hope this years big bonus boy, fares a bit better then that in his debut.
This was my breakdown of the Raptor season in 2009 and how TBLA readers felt about the team.
Notice how the now traded Brett Wallach out voted Jerry Sands and the comments were very interesting.

Gould didn’t get much love. But other than that, we’re loaded! ;)

His production fell off
big time, but I thought his age / performance would have impressed enough to be on the list. At least the MVP made it this year.

Is there a link to the list?

BA probably put Landry above Lemmerman
Entirely because of their draft positions.
when i post my Ogden season recap in the next week or two
we’ll have a vote to see who the real best prospect is according to TBLA readers

My question and answer about Garcia
Q: How did Jonathan Garcia not make the list? I know his season wasn’t quite as good as the Raptors’ Landry or Lemmerman, and that he did most of his hitting at home, but Garcia is 18 years old and put up very solid stats
A: File Ogden RF Jonathan Garcia in the just-missed folder. But keep in mind that just because we don’t rank a player in the Top 20 (an arbitrary stopping point), it doesn’t mean he’s not a prospect. After whiffing last year on Jerry Sands and Brian Cavazos-Galvez, a pair of ‘09 Raptors who I didn’t rank and who had nice ‘10 seasons, I looked more closely at Ogden players this year. But three factors conspired against Garcia, an eighth-round pick from Puerto Rico in ’09. As you mentioned, he did not hit well on the road at all, batting .267/.313/.390 in 105 at-bats. He collected nine of 10 homers at home in cozy Lindquist Field. That wouldn’t be enough to torpedo Garcia’s Top 20 chances if he got overwhelming support from league observers—but he didn’t. One scout wondered if Garcia’s hitting approach would continue to work. He has a lot of moving parts, and his hips tend to drift to his front foot, making it almost impossible to hit anything offspeed with authority. Perhaps Garcia could thrive as a classic plays-above-his-tools type, because he throws very well and plays with an excess of energy. But keep in mind that he’s a righty-hitting corner outfielder who offers fringy power potential, speed and defensive value.

I never quite understood why your draft position mattered so much. I always saw the rounds of the Amateur draft as a ranking of team’s confidence the player will make it to the major leagues (signing concerns notwithstanding) and that once actual baseball was being played, everyone was on an even playing field.

Other then the silly draft comment
I loved that reply. He got to the heart of the matter on why he didn’t make the top 20, and also mentioned how he felt bad about whiffing on Sands and Galvez which tells me that Galvez is going to make the MWL top 20. We already know how much BA likes Sands since they made him the prospect LF.
yeah I agree
As much as I like Garcia, I may be overrating him a bit. I still think he is a top 20 player in the league and I will still most likely have him higher than Landry and Lemmerman on my prospect list, but Eddy did make some good points

I thought the draft round comment was more for information purposes
since I saw those used in other answers.

His age should make him standout
even if his hitting approach is currently lacking a bit. If he was two or three years older it would be more of an issue, but the guy definitely has time to work on his approach.
Great Q and A though.
Looking at the stats
he had a fairly good BB/K, but everything thing else sucked…

there was a question on Gould
and the basic response was that Gould ranked #13 on the list because (1) he has a hard curveball, which suggests he’ll throw a harder fastball in the future, (2) he’s still young and getting used to pro ball, so it’s not uncommon for his velocity to be down a little this year, and (3) the Dodgers have a good track record of developing pitchers
