Wilborn

He’s been dealing all year. But he is 23 (but his first full season I believe) I think and not his listed height of 6’2". He’s a lot closer to 5’10".

Is he considered a true prospect?

by w0nderbrad on Sep 4, 2010 8:56 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

I think he can be a true prospect...

he was mentioned by DeJon Watson in my interview with him, and if he somehow ends up in AA next year, he’ll be pretty much on par age wise with most of his peers. In addition, he is a lefty which gives him some added value, especially if he ends up in the bullpen.

why do you sa he’s closer to 5’10" than 6’2"? have you seen him in person?

by Brandon Lennox on Sep 4, 2010 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I was just about to comment on Wilborn myself. Just judging by his numbers, I’d say he should be considered a top 20 prospect, and not just be cast off just yet. Give him a year against better competition to see if it’s really just him dominating teenagers or not.

Per Rotowire:
Chone Figgins (3B) SEA 9/3/2010
Figgins was 0-for-3 with a walk on Friday to raise his consecutive games streak of not notching an extra-base hit to 26. Figgins has just 18 XBH’s (one homer) on the year. Flip-flopping Figgins and Jose Lopez defensively has been disastrous, though the corellation between that swap and each player’s struggles at the plate is debatable.

Makes me with I'd actually written this
I’d expect Seattle fans would be just as irritated to see me write a headline “Is Chone Figgins going to be the biggest bust of the 2010 Free Agent Class” but put it behind a pay wall so they can only conjecture about what was actually in the article.

instead of just talking about it.

Manny

Just inside outed a pitch for single in Boston. The first pitch to him was a called strike that passed over the line of the batters box. Seriously, the piss poor calls against Manny need to spur some accountability on the part of umpires.

That has less to do with talent

and more to do with his handling of the situation. Also, there is no better place for him to sit it out and wait for the starter to fail, and no other team is going to hand him the starting job. Just not smart by him.

You need to stop watching ESPN

And going to their website. As long as the hits keep coming, they’ll keep pumping out the same shit.

Call-ups probably have to wait a day

Omaha City beat Oklahoma today in an early game 2-0. If ALBQ wins tonight they are still in it. It would be nice to have Lindsay in San Diego.

Impressive season by Magill

like the K/9 and hits/9, even if the BB rate is a lil high. Sounds like a good candidate to start in AA Chattanooga next year.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Sep 4, 2010 12:07 PM PDT reply actions

He's got a 1.12 WHIP which I am finding very impressive, because it's that low even with somewhat high walks

I agree, he should start the season in AA.

If I were Dejon Watson, I’d have the AA rotation as follows:

1. Withrow
2. Rubby
3. Miller
4. Magill
5. Webster

I thought about Wall being in the AA rotation, but I’d say put him in High A ball for now. Keep E Martin and Eovaldi in High A for now as well. The AA rotation could be nasty next year.

is there something up with A+ IE? Martin and Eovaldi both had pretty rough seasons there.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Sep 4, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Based on the seasons they have had in IE

I don’t want to subject Webster and Magill to going there.

"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

by Ivdown on Sep 4, 2010 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Disagree on Magill and Webster

I think both have to go to IE and prove they can be in AA. Peripherals don’t translate in getting a huge promotion. Again, you really have to look at Magill’s HR rate, he will get shelled in AA.

by Julio Nievas on Sep 4, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I think one will go to AA, and the other to A+, just so they can split the two.

by Tripon on Sep 4, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

With his homerun rate, though, I’m afraid to see what will happen to Magill in IE…that’s just begging for trouble.

I see what you mean, but Dejon Watson believes that A and A+ are the same level, so going to AA won’t be a big jump in his eyes.

by Ivdown on Sep 4, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Aren’t you worried about his HR rate in the MWL? His peripherals aren’t impressive either.

by Julio Nievas on Sep 4, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

which peripherals?

Great Lakes is a decent pitcher’s park, but it’s a + home runs park, according to BBTF in 2007.

http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/oracle/discussion/2007_minor_league_park_multipliers/

Has the stadium changed that much?

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Sep 4, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Magill- 9.8% HR/F rate, 3.98 FIP, high walk rates in July and August

by Julio Nievas on Sep 4, 2010 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

HR/FB rate is a combination of the pitcher’s ability and I don’t think 126 innings is a good enough sample for it. Plus, like I said, unless something’s drastically changed, Great Lakes is a + HR park, so that’d inflate the HR/FB percentage.

Looking on minorleaguesplits, if you eliminate park and luck factors, his HR/FB rate drops and his FIP is somewhere around 3.4, so something to consider.

The hits/9 and the 12% line drive percentage are things to get mildly excited about.

Yeah, I definitely am. I’m looking at Magill’s strikeouts, walks, and hits allowed, and i see someone who can end up a good number 3 starter eventually.

How hard does Magill throw?

by regfairfield on Sep 4, 2010 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

“I have been very satisfied with Matt’s level of attention and devotion to the game the last three or four weeks. He has been working at it. I know he has been mortified by what has happened the last couple of times around the bases. He is going to hopefully use this year as a learning process. I think we’ll have to wait and see.” — Dodgers manager Joe Torre on the oft-criticized Kemp, who either missed second base or thought he missed second base in two consecutive games against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday and Wednesday and consequently was forced to backtrack. The first time was inconsequential, coming as it did on a two-run homer by James Loney. But the second came on a ball Loney hit off the wall and appeared to force Loney to settle for a single, although Loney later said the ball came off the wall so hard and so directly toward Phillies right fielder Jayson Werth that he probably wouldn’t have tried for second anyway.

It is pretty depressing, I'll grant you

I had to stop reading comments on Yahoo sports, on SFGate, and on the Denver Post. (Any Broncos article there is usually overtaken by nutjobs who want Josh McDaniels burned at the stake.)

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
