Dodgers Go Down Quietly, Fall To Sanchez, Giants 3-0

Hiroki Kuroda was good again tonight, but Jonathan Sanchez was better, and the Giants walked away with a series-winning 3-0 victory on Sunday night baseball.

Kuroda allowed three runs in eight innings while striking out eight. It was a 1-0 game in the seventh when Juan Uribe struck again, launching a two-run shot over the wall in left field, dismissing his bat in a manner a little too similar to Dante Bichette for my tastes. Dodger starting pitchers allowed five earned runs in 23 innings in this series, a 1.96 ERA, but they lost two of three games.

Sanchez was wonderful, striking out nine in his seven scoreless innings. He allowed five baserunners on the evening: three hits, a walk, and a hit batsman.

John Lindsey and his four Isotopian brethren arrive in San Diego tomorrow for the start of a 10-game road trip. Vicente Padilla faces Mat Latos in the series opener with the Padres tomorrow night.

WP - Jonathan Sanchez (10-8):  7 IP, 3 hits, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts

LP - Hiroki Kuroda (10-12):  8 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts

Sv - Brian Wilson (40):  1 IP, 2 strikeouts

I kinda hope that doesnt happen

since:

1. the season is over.
2. We dont want to help the Giants win the division.
3. It would be nice to have a protected pick.

Hitting coach debate

I never like blaming hitting coaches because it’s too simplistic, but… why Mattingly is the favorite for the Dodger mgr position assuming it opens up next year? Let’s see, he’s the hitting coach for a team that is beyond futile on offense…

I know the guys are really pressing and no matter what a hitting coach may say or work on during the game some of that can go out the window, but for a team with some talent on offense (unlike 2005), to be this pathetic, and consistently so for months, is head scratching. Again, don’t want to scapegoat because it’s a collective responsibility, but shouldn’t he share some of the blame for this awfulness?

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

by underdog on Sep 5, 2010 7:53 PM PDT reply actions

Thing about Mattingly is he was the hitting coach for the same group of guys last year when they scored a bunch of runs.

So I dont know if changing him out does much.

The players just aint getting it done.

by Joey Joe on Sep 5, 2010 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Yah that's fair to an extent.

I’ve generally felt coaches get too much of the blame and too much of the credit.

But still, coaches should at least help players adjust and work with them. Last year they were in the groove, this year they’ve been anything but. Hitters need to adjust when the league adjusts to them, and along with that I’d assume coaches need to help them do that. Anyway just thinking out loud here. It’s just hard to be impressed.

I wouldn't mind a Chad-like analysis of why we stopped hitting after the 2nd half.

I mean it baffles me how a team can suddenly hit a collective funk like this.

by Nofatmike on Sep 5, 2010 8:06 PM PDT up reply actions

How much of this is attributed to Manny? Even when the guy wasn’t hitting, just the presence was enough to give these guys confidence.

by Bakofan on Sep 5, 2010 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps they started pressing after he left? I remember Ethier, Kemp, and Loney pressing early on in Manny’s suspension, but they soon adjusted.

by Nofatmike on Sep 5, 2010 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Who gets blamed for this

If anyone is not going to get blamed by Ned for the collapse in the second half it is going to be Donny baseball and Joe T. I do agree with your premise, but I see Mattingly as having the job as Dodger Manager unless Joe decides to manage another year. If any changes come maybe Honneycutt goes because of the bullpen issues or perhaps Ken Howell.

by wineracquet on Sep 5, 2010 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Honeycutt going would be even more irrational imho

given the pitching, unlike the hitting, has in some ways exceeded expectations. Yes the bullpen has been iffy, but hopefully that can be blamed for many other factors. Anyway I know you’re just wondering aloud what the Dodgers will do, as am I, but I would be a bit baffled to see Mattingly rewarded and Honeycutt blamed after this topsy turvy season.

And yes Manny clearly was a factor in the lineup, as is the absence of Furcal for much of the season. Having both all season and healthy and this lineup hits a lot better. Which is why I’m hesitant to blame Mattingly, either. But again, they still have some talented hitters in the lineup and have just not performed.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

Despite results you see after some mound visits Honeycutt is awesome imho. Our staff always seems to be better than they appear on paper and I give Honeycutt a ton of credit.

by hee came hee seop'd he choi'd on Sep 5, 2010 8:29 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Point well taken on Honeycutt

I want to make clear I am not in favor losing Honeycutt unless there is some compelling reason that I don’t know about. I am just trying to guess what is going to happen and I see Torre wanting to protect his image and final year or years in LA the best way possible.

While there is blame in many quarters and losing Furcal and Manny for the amount of time was brutal, not having a better replacement for Manny may have been the toughest. The early losses courtesy of the Ortiz boys was also very tough.

If I have one wish for next season it is that the Dodgers DO NOT choose an aging veteran LF pinch hitter who can only do that job. I hope they can find a player who is both younger and ideally can play the OF and even spell Loney at first. (don’t think the Dodgers will trade Loney regardless of stats)

Know it would cost a pretty penny but would love to take a flyer on Beltre, make Blake your uber utility guy, and accept Reed Johnson and Gibbons as my LF outfield platoon.

I listened to the game on the radio.

At one point, Charlie Steiner, and Rick Monday was talking about Hunter Pence for some reason, and among other praises, says he plays the game the right way.

Later, when Uribe hits the homeroom, Steiner and Monday described Uribe just tossing his bat, and they’re just loving it. I’m wondering why they’re not slamming Uribe for playing the game right way or, maybe he does, but his game is pretty much the opposite of the scrappy way guys like Pence plays.

Eh, I don’t know. Maybe “play the Right way” is just code for players I like.

They could sign a guy like Ramon Hernandez who is a type A FA. Derek Lee is a type A FA, Jose De La Rosa, and Jon Garland are both Type A FAs.

I can see the team signing De La Rosa, and Garland to shore up the starting pitching. Having a protected pick doesn’t hurt.

I wish I thought it mattered whether the Dodgers bring back Podsednik or not.

I mean, of course it matters — good teams do not fill outfield holes with Scott Podsednik — but in terms of whether the Dodgers will win enough games to go to the postseason…. no, I do not think it matters.

NL West Title Chances

via my simulator playing out the rest of the schedule for the four top NL West teams.

Padres: 48.06%
Giants 45.53%
Rockies: 5.85%
Dodgers: 0.56%

Some pretty serious movement in these numbers especially for the top three teams. The Padres chances use to rest at 86.69% on 8/29. The Giants chances have risen from 25.97% to where they currently sit at 45.53% in the last two days. And amazingly, the Rockies chances have risen from the ashes at 0.64% on 8/28 to where they stand now at 5.85%. On 9/5 the Dodgers were at 1.57%, the last two losses really hurt.

Left in the lineup against a tough lefty, James Loney went 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s loss to the Giants.

The smart move for the Dodgers would be to trade Loney this winter, but barring that, they should probably go get a third baseman and turn to a Loney-Casey Blake platoon at first. Loney entered tonight’s game with a 560 OPS in 144 at-bats against lefties this year, while Blake is at 692 against right-handers (compared to 958 versus against lefties).

by silverwidow on Sep 5, 2010 9:08 PM PDT reply actions

go get a third baseman

Is this conceivable? Will the team that needs threecountemthree starting pitchers and an outfielder also go get a third baseman so they can have a ten million dollar platoon?

Also this question: would the results of that platoon still provide below-average production at first base?

The Omar Moreno of this blog

by Humma Kavula on Sep 5, 2010 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Jerry Sands at 3b!

by Joey Joe on Sep 5, 2010 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the platoon would work

Understand about Loney’s power he is at max a 15 HR guy. However, he leads the league in DBLS for 1st basemen in the NL. I personally think the Dodgers will go after 1 pitcher and pay a reasonable amount of money-Lilly, and will go to the scrap heap and pay little for a the other two, maybe giving Ely a shot a the spot.

However, we may hate it, I think the Dodgers will sign/pick up the Pods option which will be cheap and keep Gibbons. I think they spend big money if they do at all on Beltre.

by wineracquet on Sep 5, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Pods can decline the option and leave. Which is hopefully what happens.

by silverwidow on Sep 5, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure

And the Dodgers can sign him as a free agent. In fact, I believe that Pod will decline the option. I just also think there is a non-zero chance he’ll be re-signed.

The Omar Moreno of this blog

by Humma Kavula on Sep 5, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Its more than a non-zero.

I think the Dodgers are the favorites to sign Scotty Pods. They’ll easily go more than $2 million for him.

A starter worthy contract for a 4th OF at best is a huge concern.

by silverwidow on Sep 5, 2010 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Regardless of what he makes, he'll be the starter.

You can call that a concern if you want, but assuming it happens, the number of PAs Pod will get next year is, right now, roughly seventh on my list of concerns about the 2011 Dodgers.

For 10 mils, they could sign Dunn.
Dump Loney’s salary…trade Blake (probably have to pay some of his salary)…
