Dodgers Week 22 In Review: Getting Punked At Home

The Dodgers played the top two teams in the NL Wild Card race last week, and they lost both series. In fact, now both teams, the Phillies and Giants, are closer to their division leads thanks to playing the Dodgers. In each of the Dodgers' last three series, they have won the opening game and lost the next two games.

Stop me if you've heard this before, but the Dodgers got good starting pitching -- outside of one start by Carlos Monasterios -- but inconsistent offense and as a result dropped four of six games on the week.

The Dodgers actually only had five different people drive in runs during the week, and Scott Podsednik did not set any tables, finishing the week with one hit in 18 at-bats. Ending the week at one game over .500, the Dodgers' march toward the middle goes on.

Dodger Batter of the Week:   The much-mailgned men on the corners split the award, as James Loney and Casey Blake each had stellar weeks. Loney hit .313/.476/.563, while Blake hit .421/.500/.526 for the week. Honorable mention goes to Rod Barajas, who popped two home runs and caught 100% of the innings this week.

Dodger Pitcher of the WeekHiroki Kuroda was the only Dodger starter to pitch twice this week, and he was also the best, allowing just three runs total in his two games, in nearly 16 innings. He took a no-hitter into the eighth on Monday against the Phillies. Honorable mention goes to Chad Billingsley, who shut down the Giants on Friday night, allowing two unearned runs in his eight innings.

Week 22 Record:  2-4
16 runs scored (2.67 per game)
23 runs allowed (3.83 per game)
.340 pythagorean winning percentage

Season Record:  69-68
587 runs scored (4.28 per game)
585 runs allowed (4.27 per game)
.502 pythagorean winning percentage (69-68)

Is Martin going to have surgery on his hip?

by vadodger on Sep 6, 2010 8:50 AM PDT reply actions

Torre said that Martin likely won’t need surgery.

Payroll worksheet

thanks for adding the callups…the only thing i think that needs to be updated now is Casto’s salay since he was outrighted a while back.

by Brandon Lennox on Sep 6, 2010 8:51 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I will change it. At the time I kept his salary the same because he was supposed to be called back up within the 10-day DFA period, but of course that didn’t happen.

by Eric Stephen on Sep 6, 2010 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions

oh yeah that would have made sense

but now that he’s MIA, hopefully we’ve seen the last of him!

by Brandon Lennox on Sep 6, 2010 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

once Martin was moved to the 60 day DL

When the Dodgers did their callups they only had 1 spot available on their 40 man roster, if Martin is moved to the 60 day, what happened with the other spot?

by wineracquet on Sep 6, 2010 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

Mce hasn't happened yet

Will happen today

Only need to add Lindsey & Mitchell to the 40-man. They has one open spot and Martin to the 60-day (or whatever move they make) creates the other spot

“inconsistent offense” …… and horrid relief pitching.

What, you don’t like more walks than strikeouts from the bullpen?

Is it the offseason yet?

It’s going to be a looooonnnnnng off season, so might as well get started on it early! :-/

I for one am supplementing my baseball bummers with a league leading Galaxy team, an opening week win for my Cal Bears, hope springing eternal for my adopted Chargers, and a casual interest in Tiger Woods getting his shit together.

by Josie Becker on Sep 6, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Well done

I’m looking forward to football season, too, tho I don’t have a college team to root for per se (since both my alma maters don’t even have teams), but grew up rooting for UCLA and like Cal, too, and will just enjoy watching games. I’d like the Dodgers to play more of the call ups to give them a looksy, at least makeit more interesting for us, even if maybe not for the more relevant games.

I’m with you, it’s definitely time for Torre to start future planning, but I don’t see that happening ’til the playoffs are Mathematically possible, and with the way the Padres have been playing, that might not happen til the last week of September.

Personally, I’m giving the Dodgers ‘til the House season premier, then I’ll probably be done with watching them in prime time.

John Lindsey will wear No. 35 for the Dodgers, previously worn this year by Ramon Ortiz and Jack Taschner; Russ Mitchell will wear No. 9

by Eric Stephen on Sep 6, 2010 12:52 PM PDT reply actions

Lindsey

I don’t want to make it more than it is, but the Lindsey callup is probably one of the best things this organization has done this season. Overall, it is just a blip in the history of this team that probably won’t matter much at all, but to the man it is 20+ years of hard work paid off. It was the right thing to do, a win-win all the way around. Lindsey can’t negatively impact the Dodgers this season but he could possibly contribute to spoiling another teams’ season. I hope he gets a chance to start a few games over the next couple of weeks and I hope that he does some damage at the plate. I think it is great that he finally got the call, congrats big John Lindsey.

Anyone watching the US Open?

One of the the Tournament Summary points they just showed was that the Padres haven’t won since the tournament opened and Enberg left to cover it. This caused Dick Enberg to say on national TV, come on Padres, go after those Dodgers tonight.

They had McEnroe explain the sitch after they came back from break, hoping I assume to avoid a barrage of tweets, the new angry letters, but it still got three English major length sentences from me. Unprofessional bastard : )

However, you coulda just said they are beautiful women, which they are, without looking like Tex Avery.

by keithc13 on Sep 6, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s mostly a behind the scenes guy, but the stuff he did outside of Warner Bros. (which was also super cool, I mean he invented Porky Pig) used to be collected in Tex Avery specials that I’d watch as a kid on cartoon network, with wolfy up there being a repeat feature, always hollering after a pretty lady.

by Josie Becker on Sep 6, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That wolf character is hysterical. Those eyes bugging out of his head.

Good stuff.

Porky the Pig is tight. My daughter saw a cartoon with him in it the other day and said “Daddy, that piggy is naked. He’s gonna get cold!”

7-4 Rockies
Chapman doesnt get as many swing and misses as you’d think on a 101 MPH fastball.
Its fast but apparently straight.

by Joey Joe on Sep 6, 2010 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Was looking on At Bat. He throws everthing in the middle of the plate and really hard. 100-102 for every pitch.

I guess it easier when you know the guy has really good command, or poor command. (Every pitch is a strike could be seen as both good and bad command)

by keithc13 on Sep 6, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m surprised more hitters dont swing and miss at 100mph plus pitches…but most major leaguers can hit anything that is straight no matter how fast it goes.

Chapman’s best pitch is probably his 90mph slider. Not many guys can hit that pitch.

by Joey Joe on Sep 6, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Movement is what most analysts that have played say is what makes a pitcher dominant. When Broxton’s ball isn’t moving, he gets roped. Dudes like Farnsworth that throw really hard are only dominant if they are facing inferior competition or getting their breaking stuff over. Most MLB players can sit on a fastball no matter how hard it is coming.

Good point Joey

by keithc13 on Sep 6, 2010 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

3 straight hits off Chapman..1st two were hit hard…then an infield single…
Bases loaded for Tulo vs Chapman.

by Joey Joe on Sep 6, 2010 2:34 PM PDT reply actions

He has to be considered in the running for the MVP now. He is hitting .340 and has 31 HR’s and 97 RBI.

Dude is unstoppable this year, I say!
