Padilla, Dodgers Look To Grease Skids For Padres' Runaway Train

Photo

Vicente Padilla returns from the disabled list tonight to make his first start since August 15, as he had a bulging disc in his neck. He will be facing a reeling Padres team, who has lost 10 straight games, but is still in first place in the National League West.

Since the All-Star break, the Dodger starting pitchers have been very good. Their top five pitchers have 33 quality starts in 43 opportunities, or 76.7% of the time.

Pitcher Starts QS IP IP/GS W-L H R ER BB K ERA WHIP
Kuroda 10 8 67.2 6.77 3-5 47 21 20 14 57 2.66 0.901

John Lindsey will wear number 35 for the Dodgers, previously worn this year by Ramon Ortiz and Jack Taschner; Russ Mitchell will wear number 9. To make room on the 40-man roster, as expected, the Dodgers transferred Russell Martin to the 60-day disabled list, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.

Kershaw going 2-5 since then is an absolute injustice

This pitching staff deserves better, lol.

It doesn't matter one way or the other wins and losses wise for how good Kershaw is

But the overall team would be doing a tad better if our offense didn’t suck shit when Kershaw was on the mound.

I saw a stat today that Andy Pettite is 27-6 in his career against Baltimore. His ERA against them is in the low 3’s.

AJ Burnett is 11-3 in his career. His ERA is over 4.50 This includes 15.1 scoreless innings this year in his 1st 2 starts

against the O’s

by keithc13 on Sep 6, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

CC is 19-6 (I believe) and I don’t believe he’s even one of the top 10 pitchers in the AL this year, and even if he is, there’s absolutely no way he’s top 5. It must be nice to have the best offense in baseball behind you.

it seems that recently, the teams I cheer for lose (see e.g. Dodgers, and Sharks). Perhaps if I cheer for the Giants, they might lose also!

So, if I cheer for the Dodgers, they’ll lose, and Padres will win, and in turn, Giants lose.

I don’t know, I make no sense… I hate the Dodgers for putting me in this predicament.

I believe August 2, a 2-1 Dodgers win over the Padres, coupled with a Giants win over Colorado, is the last time the Dodgers did something to help the Giants gain a game in the standings, not counting head-to-head losses.

The Dodgers beat the Padres on August 3, but the Giants lost. The Dodgers beat the Phillies on August 10, but the Giants lost that day too.

And Josh Bell had two hits

Fortunately, we were able to get a front-line starting pitcher for our best infield prospect in the minors. Because you never want to trade your top minor league prospects for a relief pitcher, unless his name is Mariano Rivera.

I agree with the premise

that one should not trade a top infield prospect for a RP, with the exception of a future HOF RP still in his prime.

However, it’s a little strange to use Josh Bell as an example of this just because he had two hits in a game, when he is hitting .226/.238/.339 with 42 K to 2 BB overall.

Sands' final 2010 line

Double A: .270/.360/.529, 17 HR
Cumulative: .301/.395/.586, 35 HR

Major League ETA: August 2011, IMO.

by silverwidow on Sep 6, 2010 5:06 PM PDT reply actions

If Sands is going to come up next year

I think it would have to be earlier because the pattern of the Dodgers’ FO is to not purchase a contract of a player not on the 40-man roster only in the situation where they need a player to play or pitch right away (short of something like a back up catcher).

The last three examples I can think of when the Dodgers bought a contract of player not on the 40-man roster are Dewitt and Kershaw in 2008 and Kemp in 2006. They did purchase Elbert’s contract in August 2008 but he was due to be protected on the 40-man roster in the following off-season.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 6, 2010 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Sands is 22 now

and will be 23 next year, correct? Does a player need to be on the 40 man by the age of 23 (which is how I thought it went), or does the player have 5 years after being drafted for Rule 5 protection?

"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

by Ivdown on Sep 6, 2010 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions

No age requirement

The general rule is a player has to be protected on the 40 man roster after he has played 4 full* seasons after he has signed with the club if he is 19 or older and 5 full* seasons after he has signed if he is 18 or younger.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 6, 2010 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Sands must be protected in November 2011.

by silverwidow on Sep 6, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

A better way to say this

Sands won’t be brought up just to be a pinch-hitter or 4th outfielder, he’ll only come up to play everyday.

Which is why I said August — I am predicting an open spot by then.

by silverwidow on Sep 6, 2010 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

What a bum!

That’s a hell of an impressive AA line for someone who had never been above Low A in his career. Sands should be our 3rd best prospect at worst to start next season.

Nah.

Definitive assertion is called for here.

Perform patricide on the Padres.
DeFrock the Friars.

All true. Fair enough.

Although, to continue to comment, I may have to ask you a series of challenge/passwords that might make a Giants fan uncomfortable.

May happen and may not. Still waiting for orders from Victorville.

The pop. sentiment elsewhere is mixed.
The kids don’t get him, and of course the parental generation appreciates his place in history.
