“I was totally oblivious,” said Link, who was also promoted Sunday. "I was basically sitting in my locker watching a movie. Then all of a sudden I hear people start screaming. I tear my headphones off and I’m like, ‘What the heck is going on?’ Then I see Big John giving everybody a hug. I turn to one of my buddies playing cards and I’m like, ’What’s going on?’ He’s like, ‘Big John just got called up.’ So I popped out of my seat, ran over there and gave him a hug.
“It was awesome. Just awesome. I think he was fighting back tears for an hour.”
That is awesome

I'm glad Ned did this
but it should have been a no brainer. I don’t know if he’ll help the team but the man earned his promotion long ago, and shouldn’t have had to wait this long. This may be it for Big John so I hope he gets his first major league, and home run sometime this Sept.
Not only does he get to experience the Show
For a guy who works at a Y to earn extra scratch, the $61K he will earn as a major leaguer has got to be meaningful.

McDonald had once been the Dodgers’ minor league pitcher of the year, but his career seemed to stall as he failed to show the maturity the Dodgers had hoped.
I know I don’t pay much attention to that kind of stuff, but… what is this talking about? I have no idea. Not being snarky — please, somebody explain this… Is this about crying?

I think it had more to do with how he prepared in the offseason. They were not happy with his performance in the spring (and yes it was after a relatively short amount of innings).
How is that "maturity?"
I don’t mean to press the point… but now watch while I press the point. If it were that, the article would probably say something about his preparedness.
But it specifically says “maturity.” Phil’s comment below — “he takes failure to heart” — is tantamount to my suggestion that he got traded because he cried after pitching poorly.

wow, they HAD to take a nice fluff piece
and throw something like that in there, just to get us all worked up again.
You can choose to get worked up
or you can choose to enjoy the piece on Lindsey. I guess that is how it works, 99% of an article on Lindsey yet 1/2 the comments focus on a throwaway line about McDonald.
you're right, I get too worked up about these sorts of things
And it’s a very niece piece. But I think it’s a fair point to get a little irked about a gratuitous shot at J-Mac, IMO. The implication there seemed to be contrasting McDonald’s ethic with Lindsey’s. I’d feel a lot better if they just left that sort of thing out entirely, particularly as they seem to be using the trade as a positive example of how Ned uses personal values to evaluate someone’s worth.
that was the intent.

Sports Illustrated
just announced a big story on the Divorce and we got an advance copy. Just started reading it but man, photo of the two of them just makes them look like sharks.
The writer for that story grew up in LA. His favorite current writers are
My favorites now are Bill Plaschke, Tom Verducci, Joe Posnanski, Gary Smith, Charles P. Pierce, S.L. Price, Tom Junod, Tom Friend, Tim Layden, Dave Sheinin, Chris Ballard and Mark Kriegel.

He ends the story
by promoting the old Eli Broad BS. Nothing new in the story, some pointless fan quotes, same old info, SI seem late to the party compared to what I’ve already read.
Of course a good part is rightfully detailing how how great everything was back in the O’Malley days. I would bet Frank/Jamie hate Peter.
Let me ask this question
Okay, class wise no question but really how much better were they. Campanis got embarrassed out of job, Tommy should have been eased out better, their scouting and farm system for the last 10-12 years was pretty bad.
I think to much is glamorized about the O’Malley’s but given the alternatives since PeterSister sold out Dodger fans by misjudging the market for single owner teams their time in charge would be a welcome relief.
I do agree they really handled the Campanis firing badly, but they may have saved Tommy’s life. I was quite irritated they didn’t stand by Al, but he did dig his hole.
Cinderella story.... tears in his eyes
Once a former Y camp counselor….. now about to play in his first MLB game.

The Office DVD
I considered not buying the latest season (available today), but couldn’t pass up the $29.99 sale price.
Not a great season at all but at least I’ll be caught up for later this month.
holy fucking crap on a stick
rad

Did Boise just play the toughest game on their schedule?
Do they control their own BCS (top 2) destiny?
Technically speaking, it’s impossible for a non-BCS conference team to ever control their own destiny WRT appearing in a BCS game, much less the BCS game.

That would really suck if a great team like Boise St went undefeated and didn’t even get a chance to play for the title. Not like that would likely happen though.
I think you just broke my sarcasm meter.

Ned loves gritty guys. What can be more gritty than 16 years in the minors?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
Workin’ in a coal mine, goin’ down, down, down
Workin’ in a coal mine, whoop, about to slip down
Workin’ in a coal mine, goin’ down, down, down
Workin’ in a coal mine, whoops, about to slip down
Five o’clock in the mornin’, I’m all ready up and gone
Lord I am so tired, how long can this go on?
