Reeling Dodgers Look To Avoid Sweep

The Dodgers began the season winning 23 of their first 29 games against the National League West. However, they have lost 15 of 23 divisional games since then, including dropping the last four games. They look to avoid a San Diego sweep with tonight's finally.

Chad Billingsley has yet to allow a run at Petco Park this season. He pitched six innings on July 27 and 7 1/3 innings on May 16, both wins.

Cory Luebke is making his second big league start  for the Padres tonight, after allowing four runs in five innings against the Rockies on Friday, including two home runs at Petco Park. John Lindsey faced the southpaw Luebke once in the minors this season, on August 15 in Portland. Against Luebke, Lindsey walked once and struck out twice in three plate appearances.

On this day 50 years ago, Joe Torre signed his first professional baseball contract, with the Braves, writes Chris Jaffe of The Hardball Times.

Here's a cool look at Ned Colletti calling Lindsey after he got news of his major league callup. As Chris Volk of Dodgerfan.net astutely noted, Colletti told Lindsey that the Dodgers would fly Lindsey's family out to Houston, which suggests he will get playing time during that series.

Man, beaten to the punch

I got to the same conclusion as Chris Volk about 90 minutes later. Damn work getting in the way of things!

A recent fanpost here asked “[Ned] Colletti has a heart?”

Here is a [propaganda] video that may prove that he does. (Ned comes on at 1:10.) Houston will start two lefties against LA – JA Happ and Wandy Rodriguez on Friday and Saturday – so maybe the long-awaited John Lindsey start will occur in one of those games, with some VIP invited well-wishers in attendance.

I am happy for Lindsey and his family

that they get to see him in the show. A handful of plane tickets and a couple of hotel rooms don’t set the Dodgers back much dough, but it is a nice gesture on their part.

I wonder how much of his experience

and Mitch Jones’ last year is like this:

It was the greatest 21 days of my life. You never touch your luggage in the show—somebody else handles your bags. It’s great. The ballparks are like cathedrals, the hotels all have room service, the women have long legs and brains – it’s a smorgasbord.

The women are hot, eh?

Yeah—and so are the pitchers. They throw ungodly breaking stuff in the Show—exploding sliders.

That reminds me, happy birthday (again) Josie!

It probably says more about my mood than anything else, but you’re right about “propaganda video.” It would have been classier to just do it without manipulating the situation for PR. Sure folks, the team’s collapsed, but Ned Colletti’s a great guy, so come out and see John Lindsey tomorrow night! His family’s coming!

They could have taken it one step further, into reality TV level of fakeness, by having Lindsey get the news at home via telegram, and act surprised, but there would be a camera already inside his apartment before he answered the door :)

by Eric Stephen on Sep 8, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

They could have had a one hour special on ESPN hosted by Steve Lyons who asks him is clipping his fingers in the minors is different than in the majors.

I felt a little bad taking that "shot"

but not for too long. It is, but then again, it is something we like to see so…. Still, you know it would have gotten pub during the broadcasts from Houston when they show Lindsey’s family in the stands. That is if Prime Ticket / KCAL actually control the video feed. Do they still do borrowed feeds anymore?

Funny story

last week I spent part of my birthday weekend at the Del Mar Racetrack betting on horses for the first time. When I asked my gf’s Angel fan of a dad what his strategy was for picking horses, he said “Go down to the paddock, and when they walk by you see which one has the biggest butt and has a good sweat going”. To which I responded, “So do I pick Broxton or Billingsley?”

He wasn’t amused. I wrote it down in my journal and laughed about it later than night.

No, in one's neck of the woods that's how it is

but there are literally no games airing anywhere on CBS (not Fox) in the afternoon. Yes, there’s usually a doubleheader on one channel and a single header on the other but it is mixed and matched depending your region, the home team, etc.

http://bbref.com/pi/shareit/3djBA

Maybe looking more like 7th best. I’m sure he juiced in 2004, doesn’t detract from the fact when he’s done, his combo of defense/power will have resulted in one hell of a career.

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s certain to opt out of his deal after this year. The Dodgers need help at 3B.

Is he worth signing at the price he’ll command?

People don't think it be like this, but it do.

by MartinGreen on Sep 8, 2010 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I would like to sign him back

and move CB to a 1B platoon with Phil’s boy. :)

He will command a big chunk of cash, though. And we have other concerns such as SP, LF maybe, and C.

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 5:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think I like Loney being called Phil's Boy

Kelly is much more in love with Loney then I am and you need something to go into battle with Kelly on.

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Ha!

fair enough.

Never to be referred in that context again.

You can’t stop me from thinking it!

:)

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

He'll be 32 this next spring

his defense is still stellar, he’s coming off his 2nd base season ever, if we sign him, we will probably be disappointed. Though I’d love to have him back on the team home comings never work out.

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Quite the prognostication. Good work there.

Thanks for the update.

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

No prognostication

simply adding up his average number of home runs.

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

But putting it on paper ties you to it. If he had microfracture surgery after 2007, none of this would be important.

That is what I meant by it.

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Beltre’s 2004 is the 64th best season of all time according to WAR. The only guys with better seasons than that not in the Hall of Fame are Barry, Jason Giambi and Ron Santo.

And the best part is that he legitimately didn’t deserve the MVP that year because Barry had the 9th best season ever. Beltre’s 2004 really is the greatest fluke season of all time, even more than Brady Anderson.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

He's got a 6.3 WAR

right now, can you really still call it that?

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s still almost four wins off his career high. Anderson’s 1999 wasn’t that much worse than his 1996 despite way less home runs.

Maybe Beltre just is wired to have a great season once every six years.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Myabe Seattles stadium just sucks that much for hitters?

I’m sure its not that bad.

Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?

by nolander on Sep 8, 2010 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Even then we can adjust for stuff like that.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Just curious

doesn’t the change from 6.5 wins to 4 wins change the fact it was one of the flukiest seasons ever or are you saying that even at a 4 win change that is incredibly fluky?

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s still a huge fluke because not many people have one year four wins better than the rest, but it was way more interesting before he went bananas this year.

I wonder if there’s any easy way to find the biggest difference between best year and second best year.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

he’s like 3 wins better then his 3rd best year in his age 31 season. That also seems unusual.

by meercatjohn on Sep 8, 2010 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

So I did a quick check by looking at the top WAR list and clicking on any name that seemed fluky. The biggest differences between best year WAR and second best in the Retrosheet era:

Marcus Giles 2003 (4.3)
Bernard Gilkey 1996 (4.1)
Rico Petricelli 1969 (4.0)
Darrell Porter 1979 (3.9)
Beltre 2004 (3.8)
Magglio Ordonez 2007 (3.7)
John Valentin 1995 (3.7)

Very unscientific but not a terrible place to start.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I kinda understand WAR, but

could you give a quick “WAR for Dummies” definition?

Thanks

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

How many more wins you would get with this guy as opposed to a random AAAA player. This includes both offense and defense.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Cleon Jones 1969 at 3.9 is up there too.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

My only question was on who the player was compared to.

Random AAAA player is what I was looking for.

Thanks man

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

No problem. Just don’t ask how they figure out how good this random AAAA player would be :)

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I was considering asking, but I figured if there was a specific player/formula for figuring that, you would’ve mentioned it.

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh there is, but it’s long and if you really want to understand it you have to get into how projection systems really work.

by regfairfield on Sep 8, 2010 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I want to know, but I am questioning my dedication right now. I will just assume that all players are judged against Loney right now!

:)

by keithc13 on Sep 8, 2010 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

His stats would suggest that he was a better hitter average and OPS wise on the road while a Mariner.

He had a couple of years that he had better power numbers at home vs the road.

I can’t get my head around the fact that this guy – who seems to do a lot of things right – is also the one who went into the stands in Detroit.

People don't think it be like this, but it do.

by MartinGreen on Sep 8, 2010 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude is getting his head on straight

I think there are a lot of guys who would go into the stands if someone threw a cup full of beer on them even when they are trying to avoid altercation by lying down.

We all know what Sidney Crosby can do on the ice, but on Wednesday afternoon the Penguins captain displayed his all-around athletic skills by hitting a home run at PNC Park during batting practice with eight of his fellow Penguins teammates

Lyons says

Kershaw is the only untouchable, in his opinion.

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Sep 8, 2010 6:46 PM PDT reply actions

I think Steve Lyons before the game asks for only one fact that he can drop. When mentioning Russ Mitchell he said Ned called up guys who deserved a call up rather than those who are entitled to one, siting him being drafted in 2003 as the reason for his call up.

I wouldn’t trade Billingsley either, but I’d listen. Kershaw is the only one on this team I wouldn’t listen for.
