Misc Notes:
Jake Lemmerman won the Pioneer League MVP. As a SS you can see he was all over leaderboard. Here is a little story about him:
http://tinyurl.com/2dz2c3s
Jerry Sands showed up on the leaderboard in both the MidWest and Southern League. Kind of cool he only played 1/2 a season in the MWL and still managed to finish 6th in home runs. An ISOP in the MWL of over .300 is kind of sick.
Nick Akins owned the Arizona League leaderboard and made a decent dent in the Pioneer League. He hit 21 home runs playing in 1/2 season rookie leagues. Not sure how many players have ever led the Pioneer League in home runs after spending the first part of the season in the Arizona League.
John Lindsey had quite a season and Mr. Gibbons was not bad either.
2nd Misc Note
Allen Webster was missing bats in the playoff loss but when they did make contact a home ensured which resulted in the Loons losing 1 – 0 in the first game of their playoffs. Webster did his job, allowing only two hits, six walks, and seven K’s. His walks never got him into trouble, Steve Smith finished up with three spotless innings. To bad the offense was unable to score, something Dodger fans are all to familiar with.

Maybe Jake Lemmerman can become our own Hebrew Hammer
I was unaware of this until I found it searching for his MVP info. Per the www.jewishbaseballtimes.com:
Jake Lemmerman, "Rookie Pioneer League" Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers). The 21-year-old shortstop continued his hot streak Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and four runs scored. The top Jewish pick in the June 2010 amateur draft — 5th round, 172nd overall — Lemmerman is batting .372 with 16 extra-base hits in 113 at-bats.
Good thing the Raptors were not playing Wednesday Night.

Sands and Gibbons
Sands and Gibbons got some love in an MLB.com article that listed Gibbons as the overall MiLB batting champ and had Sands tied for third in the minors for home runs. LINK
I wonder why Akins has been at rookie leval so long.
Maybe he needs a lot of work with the glove?
That is a good question
He repeated the exact same levels this year despite having success last year. Maybe he had an injury or something at the beginning of the year?
His strikeout rate is high, but that alone doesn’t usually keep a guy in rookie ball for two years. Especially when his first year was pretty solid.
I don’t know, if he can’t figure out how to make contact against guys that couldn’t smoke six months ago, why bother.

but I don’t think I could eat a whole one
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Question
We’re now tied for the 14th pick, but sitting at 16th due to our success last year. We’re 3.5 GB of the 11th pick, and an unreasonable (even for this team) 9 GB of the #8 pick.
My question is, if you try to fail, and you succeed, which have you done?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Ugly Question
The slide by the Dodgers over the past month has been very ugly, some would argue it began in June. Given Joe Torre’s ego and how he is perceived by the media, do people think this will motivate him to stay and manage another year with the Dodgers, so he can go out on a “positive note”
Prediction
John Lindsey will start on Friday and hit at least 1 home run because I have JA Happ going for my fantasy team.
1st pitch, 1st at bat would be better
Then Disney would make a movie out of it and we would all hate him

I predict
With the bases loaded in a tie game at home, Lindsey will hit what appears to be a walk-off grand slam, but Matt Kemp will turn around on the base paths and mob him before he can reach second base. His first major league home run will go down as a one-RBI single.
Dylan Hernandez reported last night that Torre had Lindsey slated for Saturday.

I’d like to see a game with at least three of our call-ups in the starting lineup. Something like Russ Mitchell at 3B, Lindsey at 1B and Oeltjen or Gibbons (or both) in the OF.
See if half of a AAA team can play any better than the current crop of excrement trotted out there every night.
SS Furcal
2B Theriot
RF Ethier
1B Lindsey
LF Gibbons
3B Mitchell
CF Oeltjen
C Barajas
I want to see this lineup before the season is out.
If that's the case, i'd rather see
LF Podsednik
2B DeJesus
RF Gibbons
1B Lindsey
3B Mitchell
CF Oeltjen
C Jansen
SS Hu
P Ely
If you’re going to punt, kick it hard.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
This is essentially an impossibility though
The point of OB12’s lineup is to see whether that lineup would be anymore of a punt than the way our current lineup is hitting these days.
He will Homer in his first AB
he will go 4 for 4, and his last hit will be single, completing a reverse natural cycle.

I'm still trying to figure out the question from yesterday
How did everybody — everybody — miss the prediction on the Dodgers? Nobody thought they’d play like a 90-loss team for 5/6 of the season. Except in May, the Dodgers have been one of the worst teams in baseball.
Have you ever seen a season in which the entire team forgot how to hit?

Outside of Green’s shoulder injury, that team was just bad.

I think it was Eric who posted something that shows that if you take out the games after the first Cinnncciinnaattiiii series, our offense has basically blown for 4 months. I don’t think we forgot how to hit, I think our offense just sucks.

I'll again point to injuries
Granted, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier played as much this year as they did last year, but it’s hard to carry an offense that missed it’s two best players for more than half the year.

Comparing the positions:

So losing a very productive second base tandem for DeWitt/Theriot, Blake not having a fluke year, Kemp regressing, and less Manny with way less effective replacements.

That's helpful
wow, that’s a bad team right there. I’ve been wishy washy until now about whether the Dodgers should blow up the team — but seeing it this way makes it seem like the only choice. There are too many things wrong to patch holes — that team is not fixable.
I had fun rooting for these guys, and they almost made it to the WS. Now it’s time to scatter them to the winds and build the next great team.

I tend to agree. I think our approach to the offseason should be to identify the pieces to keep and trade or non-tender the rest to save some money and sign cheap players to replace them realizing that we won’t contend next season.
Sign Kershaw, Bills, and Kemp to multi-year deals
Trade/non-tender Loney, Martin, Broxton, Theriot, Blake
A couple of things
1. I agree on Kershaw and Bills. Kemp already has a deal for next year and is under team control for another year, right? I would certainly approach him and see what kind of six-year deal he would sign. If they can get him at a discount because of the possibility that his regression is for real, then they should take that gamble and sign him. If he wants the kind of money that assumes this year never happened, the Dodgers can wait on him.
2. Martin. When he got hurt we all saw what poor performance from catcher really looked like. That said, he’ll be too expensive for that production. Non-tender him, yes, but also try to sign him for a small-money, one-year deal.
3. Ethier and Furcal. If we are blowing up the team, blow it up. Both of these guys would get a good return, I think, and neither will be part of the next great Dodger team.
4. Blake will not get a return. I’m not even sure that they can get some team to take him for the $6 million he is owed.
5. Broxton’s value has never been lower. There’s no sense in trading him. Let him walk away after next season and take the picks — more value there.
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Sep 9, 2010 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree with most of this especially 1 and 2
Furcal would be too tough to trade though. He will have 10 and 5 rights now and will probably want to stick around and see if he can kick in his option.
I’m 50/50 on trading Ethier, but agree he would be our best trade chip.
Blake will need to be moved to some sort of platoon/bench role.
Also, I think there are plenty of teams that would still see greater value in Brox than two draft picks.
If you can get good value for Broxton, by all means trade him.
Furcal — yeah, I didn’t think about the 10 and 5 thing. On the other hand, if he sees the team getting destroyed around him, he might want to play for a (playoff) team that would raise his profile. There have got to be a lot of teams that could use him — he is great when he plays, the only knock is he’s hurt too often.
My feelings on Blake aren’t complicated. I think his price tag and performance will make him untradeable, and I think his veteran status and contract, combined with the lack of alternatives and payroll inflexibility, will make him the starting 3B on opening day. That’s not a good situation but I don’t think there’s much that can be done about it. I’d love to be wrong.
I agree that trading Ethier is trickiest, in that trading him is the white flag to the fan base. There’s no getting around that. I’d expect a haul for him — and if, say, the Dodgers can trade him for Rasmus (just an example — don’t know if that’s possible), they can have their cake and eat it too.

1. Yeah, Kemp is signed for next season, but now would be the time to lock him up at something of a discount. Despite his poor season, he still has talent and I think paying for talent is OK.
2. Martin would be OK to have back at $1-2M. Any more than that would be too much and it would probably worth trying to find an alternative.
3. Ethier and Furcal may have some value but keeping them would at least give the appearance that we are trying to contend.
4. Blake is probably coming back but I would float him out there to see if someone will take him and part of his salary.
5. Broxton, I think still has value but it might be wise to keep him and see if he can rebound to give us a formidable bullpen.
2. Martin would be OK to have back at $1-2M. Any more than that would be too much and it would probably worth trying to find an alternative.
Is there really anyone out there who would be better and cost similar? There simply aren’t many options out there.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
There always seem to be the Olivos and Torrealbas of the catching world out there… Maybe a little more limited this year though.
It also wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Barajas back there paired with someone we get in a trade or off the scrap heap.
Those guys all run somewhere from 2.5-4 million. It’s only the Ausmuses and Bakos in the one million range.

I’d be fine going with Barajas and Ellis for $1-1.5M combined. We are likely going to be bad next season anyway.

He was on a minor league deal this year.
by regfairfield on Sep 9, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I don’t think it’s realistic for the Dodgers to get anything out of the catching position without spending $4-5m in total.
Martin at $3-4m is fine (which is what he will likely return at, one a two-year deal IMO), but Martin at $6-7m is where I balk.
by Eric Stephen on Sep 9, 2010 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions
As bad as the alternatives have been, investing $3-4M in a catcher that was declining and coming off a pretty major lower body injury seems like a bad idea.
There aren't better catchers out there
at least not ones that won’t be pricey.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
I don’t know much about his defense, but John Buck is definitely a better hitter than Martin. I doubt he will cost much more than $4 – $5mm.

At least he’ll put up an OPS 100 points higher than what we’ve had the last two years.

I could see Ned getting real excited about a platoon of A.J. Pierzynski and Barajas. Would probably cost around $6mm.

Ned saw what AJ did on the Giants
Can’t prove it, but AJ on the Giants was not seen by Management as a great fix for catcher. He was seen as an ahole.Don’t think he will be coming to the Dodgers. Torreable who has a bit of pop would be more likely, if they replace Martin or he can’t catch.
I think we’re in the same place on Kemp. Now is the time to lock him up at a discount. But Kemp might not sign such a deal. Dave Stewart could look you in the eye and say, “You obviously think he’s gonna bounce back, and we think he’s gonna bounce back, so no discounts.” If the only deal Kemp signs is a deal that assumes this season is a blip that means nothing, then the Dodgers should wait.
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Sep 9, 2010 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions
$1-$2M on Martin will never happen. That’s nearing replacement level catcher money. Even in this crappy, injury plagued year Martin garnered 2.0 WAR. @$4M per WAR, he will be and should be insulted with those numbers.
Catching WAR makes me giggle
am I off base in that catching metrics are still quite primitive so when used in conjunction with offensive numbers to create WAR aren’t they missing some credibility?
Yeah, but how much does a catcher with hip problems go for these days? He got 2 WAR based (I’m assuming) on defense and playing time mostly. What happens when he can only catch 90-100 games next year and has a new manager who (hopefully) gives him rest?
1-2 is low, but anything more than 4 is a waste of resources.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/
Its not really the same players. Scotty Pods, Theriot, and Barajas are new. They replaced Orlando Hudson, Manny, and Martin.
The only wash is Barajas and Martin.
Replace good hitters with bad ones, and have guys like Kemp and Ethier have down years, Loney not getting better, and this is the kind of offense we have.
They started the season with the same players, wtih the exception of replacing Hudson with DeWitt. Manny got hurt and played too little, and Martin got hurt and was replaced by Barajas. But I was talking about pre-season predictions — and except for Wolf/Hudson, this was the same team that won 95.

Without leaving Milwaukee, Bud Selig may have a chance to assist West Coast baseball.
Heard this from a major league executive: Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has interest in becoming owner of the Dodgers, who could end up on the market after the McCourt ownership dispute is resolved. I was unable to reach Attanasio at his Los Angeles office, and I know Attanasio is still energetic about building the Brewers. But if commissioner Selig placed Attanasio in Los Angeles, advantage, Dodgers. It would also be a measure of redemption for Selig, who steered the McKooks into ownership of the Dodgers in 2004 The Brewers became relevant after Attanasio bought them from the Selig family for $180 million in late 2004.

Soooo
the Brewers would then be sold, or Attanasio would own two teams?
No
See Jeffrey Loria – Expos and then Marlins owner, Loria bought the Marlins from John Henry, who then purchased the Red Sox with a group of owners. Jeff Moorad, who was a minority owner of the Diamond Backs then led a group to purchase the Padres.
So you’re saying Attanasio is just a minority owner of the Brewers and would move on from that ownership partnership?
No
He appears to be the majority owner, he would have to find a buyer plus is initial investment in the Brewers ~$150-200M would have to be almost 4 times more money this time.

2) will his bat and glove play at higher levels
3) does he have enough money to buy the Dodgers?

He was drafted as a glove short stop
So it’s weird he’s doing so well with the bat.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I’m excited to follow Lemmerman, Landry and Garcia off that team. It would be cool to see them on one team with the starters from the Loons, but I’m guessing a couple of those guys will go up to AA.
I was to see the Albequerque Dozen in 2 years
with all of our outfield prospects panning out and having to pick new positions to accomodate everyone.

I'm excited and
am always happy to root for a fellow member of the “Tribe” in sports :-)
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
People were probably rebelling after not being able to see the table on the front page. :)

It was interesting that
Lemmerman and Landry didn’t get promoted to either Great Lakes or Inland Empire, Landry, I can understand since Great Lakes has enough OF but Lemmerman could have showed what he could do against stronger competition.
Closest player in age and position I saw in the Pioneer League
was Todd Frazier in 2007, he is now in AAA in the Reds system and was moved to 3B.
You missed Jamie Pedroza
who played SS for the Raptors in 2007.

Frazier went from being a SS in 2007 to a man without a position in 2010.
I know, they hated Pedroza
but he tore up the league in much the same fashion Lemmerman did. Fast forward to 2010 and his Frazier anymore of a prospect?

I am going to take a wild guess and say that
Garcia might still be the highest rated prospect on that team when BA does its ratings in the next few weeks.
I just noticed
Your awesome avatar. Who is that?
BA profiles Dodger late round and very over slot signee (Northwoods League)
6. Scott Schebler, of, Green Bay (SIGNED: Dodgers)
The Dodgers drafted Schebler in the 26th round after his monstrous freshman year at Des Moines Area CC, where he hit .446/.529/.877 with 20 homers and 82 RBIs. He followed that up by hitting .294/.347/.528 and tying for the NWL lead with 10 home runs in 218 at-bats, and the Dodgers signed him at the end of the summer for a $300,000 bonus. Schebler flashes plus-plus speed (he has been timed at 6.6 seconds in the 60-yard dash, though he doesn’t always get out of the box quickly) and plus-plus raw power to the pull side. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound lefthanded hitter has a pre-loaded swing and no stride, so all he has to do is uncoil. He’s a dead-pull hitter who hammers anything middle-in and creates natural backspin, but he struggles to make adjustments and strikes out often—though he seldom did so with runners in scoring position this summer. He’s a fringy defender in left field, and though he has 40 arm strength, his throwing accuracy is well below-average. He has enough speed for center, but it’s unclear if he has the instincts for the position
All I heard was
DH, will have Mattkempitis later on.

Sounds good
The Dodgers need some raw power in their system. Some of these guys learn to hit (or lay off) breaking pitches and turn into ballplayers.
2011
As much as I’d like to blow this all up, I believe the organization has a Yankee like mentality that we don’t rebuild. We’ll bring back mostly the same team and make another sorry attempt at the post season. We’d be selling low on almost everyone we’d like to unload and after this divorce mess McCourt (or whoever) isn’t going to come out and say lets punt the next couple of years and rebuild. We’re stuck with this mess.
I'd like to see someone try to subscribe in LA
since they have this rule about not being able to get DirectTV service as a requirement to purchase the sole online content.
BTW
apparently living in a apt complex does qualify as a reason why you can’t subscribe to DirectTV.
I'm going to try in Orange County
if I can’t get it I bet my pal could do it since he is in an apt.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
It didn't yell at me when I input my address...

Looks like SANDS was a Yankee fan growing up:

INSULT FAIL
We proudly remember when 8-tracks were introduced. First 45 RPM single might work.

Eric will crap his pants one day
when they ask a prospect what their favorite web site is and they respond www.truebluela.com instead of espn.com.
I dont know if Drew Stubbs could ever hit enough in DS

Fuck Larry Bowa in 1980
