Misc Notes:

Jake Lemmerman won the Pioneer League MVP. As a SS you can see he was all over leaderboard. Here is a little story about him:
http://tinyurl.com/2dz2c3s

Jerry Sands showed up on the leaderboard in both the MidWest and Southern League. Kind of cool he only played 1/2 a season in the MWL and still managed to finish 6th in home runs. An ISOP in the MWL of over .300 is kind of sick.

Nick Akins owned the Arizona League leaderboard and made a decent dent in the Pioneer League. He hit 21 home runs playing in 1/2 season rookie leagues. Not sure how many players have ever led the Pioneer League in home runs after spending the first part of the season in the Arizona League.

John Lindsey had quite a season and Mr. Gibbons was not bad either.

2nd Misc Note

Allen Webster was missing bats in the playoff loss but when they did make contact a home ensured which resulted in the Loons losing 1 – 0 in the first game of their playoffs. Webster did his job, allowing only two hits, six walks, and seven K’s. His walks never got him into trouble, Steve Smith finished up with three spotless innings. To bad the offense was unable to score, something Dodger fans are all to familiar with.

sounds like it was only a great game because the walks didn’t hurt. 6 walks in 5 innings is turrible

Maybe Jake Lemmerman can become our own Hebrew Hammer

I was unaware of this until I found it searching for his MVP info. Per the www.jewishbaseballtimes.com:

Jake Lemmerman, "Rookie Pioneer League" Ogden Raptors (Los Angeles Dodgers). The 21-year-old shortstop continued his hot streak Thursday, going 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and four runs scored. The top Jewish pick in the June 2010 amateur draft — 5th round, 172nd overall — Lemmerman is batting .372 with 16 extra-base hits in 113 at-bats.

Good thing the Raptors were not playing Wednesday Night.

Sands and Gibbons

Sands and Gibbons got some love in an MLB.com article that listed Gibbons as the overall MiLB batting champ and had Sands tied for third in the minors for home runs. LINK

That is a good question

He repeated the exact same levels this year despite having success last year. Maybe he had an injury or something at the beginning of the year?

by BFDC on Sep 9, 2010 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

He strikes out way way too much for a 21-22 year old in rookie league.

by regfairfield on Sep 9, 2010 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions

His strikeout rate is high, but that alone doesn’t usually keep a guy in rookie ball for two years. Especially when his first year was pretty solid.

Question

We’re now tied for the 14th pick, but sitting at 16th due to our success last year. We’re 3.5 GB of the 11th pick, and an unreasonable (even for this team) 9 GB of the #8 pick.

My question is, if you try to fail, and you succeed, which have you done?

Ugly Question

The slide by the Dodgers over the past month has been very ugly, some would argue it began in June. Given Joe Torre’s ego and how he is perceived by the media, do people think this will motivate him to stay and manage another year with the Dodgers, so he can go out on a “positive note”

by wineracquet on Sep 9, 2010 9:54 AM PDT reply actions

Chances are we will be pretty much the same next year so I’m not sure how he would go out on a positive note. Torre is most likely gone.

I predict

With the bases loaded in a tie game at home, Lindsey will hit what appears to be a walk-off grand slam, but Matt Kemp will turn around on the base paths and mob him before he can reach second base. His first major league home run will go down as a one-RBI single.

I'm still trying to figure out the question from yesterday

How did everybody — everybody — miss the prediction on the Dodgers? Nobody thought they’d play like a 90-loss team for 5/6 of the season. Except in May, the Dodgers have been one of the worst teams in baseball.

Have you ever seen a season in which the entire team forgot how to hit?

I'll again point to injuries

Granted, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier played as much this year as they did last year, but it’s hard to carry an offense that missed it’s two best players for more than half the year.

Comparing the positions:

C: 2009 OPS: .685: 2010 OPS: .670
1B: .754, .731
2B: .780, .701
3B: .801, .754
SS: .703, .812
LF: .869, .710
CF: .821, .747
RF: .854, .854

So losing a very productive second base tandem for DeWitt/Theriot, Blake not having a fluke year, Kemp regressing, and less Manny with way less effective replacements.

by regfairfield on Sep 9, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

That's helpful

wow, that’s a bad team right there. I’ve been wishy washy until now about whether the Dodgers should blow up the team — but seeing it this way makes it seem like the only choice. There are too many things wrong to patch holes — that team is not fixable.

I had fun rooting for these guys, and they almost made it to the WS. Now it’s time to scatter them to the winds and build the next great team.

The Omar Moreno of this blog

by Humma Kavula on Sep 9, 2010 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I tend to agree. I think our approach to the offseason should be to identify the pieces to keep and trade or non-tender the rest to save some money and sign cheap players to replace them realizing that we won’t contend next season.

Sign Kershaw, Bills, and Kemp to multi-year deals
Trade/non-tender Loney, Martin, Broxton, Theriot, Blake

by OB12 on Sep 9, 2010 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

A couple of things

1. I agree on Kershaw and Bills. Kemp already has a deal for next year and is under team control for another year, right? I would certainly approach him and see what kind of six-year deal he would sign. If they can get him at a discount because of the possibility that his regression is for real, then they should take that gamble and sign him. If he wants the kind of money that assumes this year never happened, the Dodgers can wait on him.

2. Martin. When he got hurt we all saw what poor performance from catcher really looked like. That said, he’ll be too expensive for that production. Non-tender him, yes, but also try to sign him for a small-money, one-year deal.

3. Ethier and Furcal. If we are blowing up the team, blow it up. Both of these guys would get a good return, I think, and neither will be part of the next great Dodger team.

4. Blake will not get a return. I’m not even sure that they can get some team to take him for the $6 million he is owed.

5. Broxton’s value has never been lower. There’s no sense in trading him. Let him walk away after next season and take the picks — more value there.

The Omar Moreno of this blog

by Humma Kavula on Sep 9, 2010 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree with most of this especially 1 and 2

Furcal would be too tough to trade though. He will have 10 and 5 rights now and will probably want to stick around and see if he can kick in his option.

I’m 50/50 on trading Ethier, but agree he would be our best trade chip.

Blake will need to be moved to some sort of platoon/bench role.

Also, I think there are plenty of teams that would still see greater value in Brox than two draft picks.

by BFDC on Sep 9, 2010 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

If you can get good value for Broxton, by all means trade him.

Furcal — yeah, I didn’t think about the 10 and 5 thing. On the other hand, if he sees the team getting destroyed around him, he might want to play for a (playoff) team that would raise his profile. There have got to be a lot of teams that could use him — he is great when he plays, the only knock is he’s hurt too often.

My feelings on Blake aren’t complicated. I think his price tag and performance will make him untradeable, and I think his veteran status and contract, combined with the lack of alternatives and payroll inflexibility, will make him the starting 3B on opening day. That’s not a good situation but I don’t think there’s much that can be done about it. I’d love to be wrong.

I agree that trading Ethier is trickiest, in that trading him is the white flag to the fan base. There’s no getting around that. I’d expect a haul for him — and if, say, the Dodgers can trade him for Rasmus (just an example — don’t know if that’s possible), they can have their cake and eat it too.

1. Yeah, Kemp is signed for next season, but now would be the time to lock him up at something of a discount. Despite his poor season, he still has talent and I think paying for talent is OK.

2. Martin would be OK to have back at $1-2M. Any more than that would be too much and it would probably worth trying to find an alternative.

3. Ethier and Furcal may have some value but keeping them would at least give the appearance that we are trying to contend.

4. Blake is probably coming back but I would float him out there to see if someone will take him and part of his salary.

5. Broxton, I think still has value but it might be wise to keep him and see if he can rebound to give us a formidable bullpen.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s realistic for the Dodgers to get anything out of the catching position without spending $4-5m in total.

Martin at $3-4m is fine (which is what he will likely return at, one a two-year deal IMO), but Martin at $6-7m is where I balk.

Can’t prove it, but AJ on the Giants was not seen by Management as a great fix for catcher. He was seen as an ahole.Don’t think he will be coming to the Dodgers. Torreable who has a bit of pop would be more likely, if they replace Martin or he can’t catch.

I think we’re in the same place on Kemp. Now is the time to lock him up at a discount. But Kemp might not sign such a deal. Catching WAR makes me giggle

am I off base in that catching metrics are still quite primitive so when used in conjunction with offensive numbers to create WAR aren’t they missing some credibility?

by meercatjohn on Sep 9, 2010 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

and considering guys like Olivo and Torrealba are making much less than $4mm, I don’t see how Martin has much of a leg to stand on, literally and figuratively.

by BFDC on Sep 9, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Even at 1 WAR the offer is ridic.

by Xeifrank on Sep 9, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

They don’t even try to measure defense in catcher WAR, just the catchers arm, so that helps.

by regfairfield on Sep 9, 2010 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but how much does a catcher with hip problems go for these days? He got 2 WAR based (I’m assuming) on defense and playing time mostly. What happens when he can only catch 90-100 games next year and has a new manager who (hopefully) gives him rest?

1-2 is low, but anything more than 4 is a waste of resources.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/reversestandings/

by G.Scott on Sep 9, 2010 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

His playing time will likely be limited and I suspect his mobility behind the plate will be as well. For someone getting by on his defense and ability to get on base, losing one will be damaging to his value. I still say max of $2M for Martin.

by OB12 on Sep 9, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, I’d of course like to see how he recovers from the hip injury first. Which may be hard to do with the season shortly being over. It will be difficult to put a fair dollar value on him going forward.

by Xeifrank on Sep 9, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Its not really the same players. Scotty Pods, Theriot, and Barajas are new. They replaced Orlando Hudson, Manny, and Martin.

The only wash is Barajas and Martin.

Replace good hitters with bad ones, and have guys like Kemp and Ethier have down years, Loney not getting better, and this is the kind of offense we have.

by Tripon on Sep 9, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

They started the season with the same players, wtih the exception of replacing Hudson with DeWitt. Manny got hurt and played too little, and Martin got hurt and was replaced by Barajas. But I was talking about pre-season predictions — and except for Wolf/Hudson, this was the same team that won 95.

http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/09/09/twelve-thoughts-rockies-dynamic-hitting-duo-next-dodgers-owne/

Without leaving Milwaukee, Bud Selig may have a chance to assist West Coast baseball.

Heard this from a major league executive: Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has interest in becoming owner of the Dodgers, who could end up on the market after the McCourt ownership dispute is resolved. I was unable to reach Attanasio at his Los Angeles office, and I know Attanasio is still energetic about building the Brewers. But if commissioner Selig placed Attanasio in Los Angeles, advantage, Dodgers. It would also be a measure of redemption for Selig, who steered the McKooks into ownership of the Dodgers in 2004 The Brewers became relevant after Attanasio bought them from the Selig family for $180 million in late 2004.

the Brewers would then be sold, or Attanasio would own two teams?

by BFDC on Sep 9, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

No

See Jeffrey Loria – Expos and then Marlins owner, Loria bought the Marlins from John Henry, who then purchased the Red Sox with a group of owners. Jeff Moorad, who was a minority owner of the Diamond Backs then led a group to purchase the Padres.

by bhsportsguy on Sep 9, 2010 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

So you’re saying Attanasio is just a minority owner of the Brewers and would move on from that ownership partnership?

by BFDC on Sep 9, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

No

He appears to be the majority owner, he would have to find a buyer plus is initial investment in the Brewers ~$150-200M would have to be almost 4 times more money this time.

BA profiles Dodger late round and very over slot signee (Northwoods League)
6. Scott Schebler, of, Green Bay (SIGNED: Dodgers)
The Dodgers drafted Schebler in the 26th round after his monstrous freshman year at Des Moines Area CC, where he hit .446/.529/.877 with 20 homers and 82 RBIs. He followed that up by hitting .294/.347/.528 and tying for the NWL lead with 10 home runs in 218 at-bats, and the Dodgers signed him at the end of the summer for a $300,000 bonus. Schebler flashes plus-plus speed (he has been timed at 6.6 seconds in the 60-yard dash, though he doesn’t always get out of the box quickly) and plus-plus raw power to the pull side. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound lefthanded hitter has a pre-loaded swing and no stride, so all he has to do is uncoil. He’s a dead-pull hitter who hammers anything middle-in and creates natural backspin, but he struggles to make adjustments and strikes out often—though he seldom did so with runners in scoring position this summer. He’s a fringy defender in left field, and though he has 40 arm strength, his throwing accuracy is well below-average. He has enough speed for center, but it’s unclear if he has the instincts for the position

As much as I’d like to blow this all up, I believe the organization has a Yankee like mentality that we don’t rebuild. We’ll bring back mostly the same team and make another sorry attempt at the post season. We’d be selling low on almost everyone we’d like to unload and after this divorce mess McCourt (or whoever) isn’t going to come out and say lets punt the next couple of years and rebuild. We’re stuck with this mess.
