Dee Gordon, Jerry Sands, & Rubby De La Rosa Among Dodgers Invites To Spring Training

The Dodgers today released their list of non-roster invitees to spring training, which includes the reigning organizational minor league player and pitcher of the year. Jerry Sands, ranked by True Blue LA readers as the top Dodger prospect, and pitcher Rubby De La Rosa, ranked No. 4, will be joined by shortstop Dee Gordon, ranked No. 6, in big league camp when spring training starts next month at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. Sands, De La Rosa, and Gordon were among the Dodger prospects who participated in the Winter Development Program in Los Angeles this week.

Joining those three prospects, along with the 39 players currently on the 40-man roster, in major league camp are the following players signed to minor league contracts:

More information can be found on these players can be found on the minor league transactions page (and on the sidebar). Last spring, the Dodgers invited two prospects to big league camp, Josh Lindblom and Russ Mitchell, and they got nine innings and 13 plate appearances, respectively, in major league spring training games.

First workouts for pitchers and catchers for the Dodgers is February 17, with the first full-squad workout to come February 22. The Dodgers open their spring training schedule on February 26 with split squad games against the Angels in Mesa and against the Giants in Scottsdale.

to go from mid-90s to high-80’s, yeah, I’d imagine it’s at least worn out. I did that in college my freshman and sophomore years, it’s hell. The preparations are ENTIRELY different.

by Maddz on Jan 15, 2011 1:35 PM PST up reply actions

well, it’s not so much about the pitch count but the frequency of use. I can leave it all out there (though not every inning) as a starter knowing I’ll take tomorrow off, play catch day 2, bullpen day 3, catch day 4, start again day 5.

As a reliever, you leave it all out there every inning because you’re only throwing 1-2 usually, but you have to get ready the next day. There is no preparation in between outings because there is no such thing as in between outings.

M=EIV

by G.Scott on Jan 15, 2011 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

That doesn’t help, but the man didn’t understand that you can throw balls out of the strikezone and his fastball is completely flat. The pitch count stuff just made it slow and flat.

Is Lindblom’s day done? No more chances? He’s still listed as on the Isotopes’ roster with “Active” status – is that current, or however it was left at the end of 2010 season? He could still get called up mid-season if needed, I guess, but not being invited as an NRI has to make that less likely.

by berkowit28 on Jan 15, 2011 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

His status in AAA is from last season but that is where he'll be in 2011 I'm sure

He was finally moved back to relief in the middle of last seaon, so he’ll spend the year in the Isotope bullpen. Sure he could be called up mid-season, but he’s not on the 40 man roster so unless he is dominating in AAA it seems unlikely

Even if he wanted to, I doubt the union lets him. Remember, ever contract is a benchmark. The only reason we think he’s worth 27 is because Howard got 25 and Arod got 27.5. If ARod got 24 and Howard got 20, we’d be saying he should get 25. Every contract shapes the market for the next set of contracts. It’s why guys don’t sign until they see what the elite players take.

With no Red Sox and Yankees in play, there’s no reason for the Cards to go that high. Pujols gets $25-26m per year tops from the Cardinals.

by Eric Stephen on Jan 15, 2011 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

Unless you're talking about right now, before he hits FA

I’m not sure how you can say there are no Yankees or Red Sox in play. Don’t matter if they both do have 1B/DH types, they’ll both be trying to get him, if only to make sure the other doesn’t.

by EMDarrow on Jan 15, 2011 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

If you (anyone in general) think the Yankees or Red Sox won’t do something to be able to get Pujols, I just think it’s a wrong notion. Yes the Yankees have Tex at 1B, but if Tex is willing to move to DH they could afford Pujols (which is insane in itself). For the Sox, they could just not resign Ortiz, move Gonzo to DH (I’d assume he’d be for that if it means a better chance to win, which he hasn’t had a ton of in SD recently).

I honestly don’t see any team not being in on Pujols if he becomes a Free Agent after this season.

My rough estimate guess is 9/$257. That would have him under contract for his age 32-40 seasons.

Year, WAR, $/WAR, Salary
2012, 7.0, 5.0, $35.00
2013, 6.5, 5.5, $35.75
2014, 6.0, 6.0, $36.00
2015, 5.5, 6.5, $35.75
2016, 5.0, 7.0, $35.00
2017, 4.5, 7.5, $30.00
2018, 4.0, 8.0, $24.00
2019, 3.5, 8.5, $17.00
2020, 3.0, 9.0, $9.00

Total: 9 years $257.5M or $28.61M per year on average

Of course this is just a quick salary exercise. Any adjustments to the WAR or $/WAR estimates would change the results. But I like to show my work.

Andre Ethier (OF, Dodgers) Current ADP: 38.75

I’m an Ethier fan, but this is a little bit on the early side, don’t you think? It’s certainly possible that he could top 30 home runs again — his flyball and HR/FB rates look pretty steady — but if I’m choosing an outfielder this early, I want someone who can contribute in multiple categories. Justin Upton (ADP: 40.20), Andrew McCutchen (50.96), Alex Rios (ADP: 65.16) and Hunter Pence (ADP: 87.35) all look like much better values.

Oh I get the change, they were trying to market the show to the same audience, that was now something like a decade older. In fact it was about the time he started going from Villain to hero that I started losing interest in that show.

by EMDarrow on Jan 15, 2011 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

Season 4?

I’m not exactly sure what the problem was with season 4, but it did start getting quite bad. I really thought the carney theme sucked ass, and the villain wasn’t what you would expect for Heroes.

Gripes with Heroes for me:
- Claire is a whiny jerk who blames her dad for everything and then proceeds to see he did it all for her
- Bennett was a cool character, just wasn’t as cool because he was SO worried about Claire
- Season 4 villains weren’t cool, like it all, except for Ray Park’s character.
- Season 2 was cut short because of the writers strike, which really pisses me off, because I think it would have ended up the best season had it gotten 20+ episodes.
- Adam Monroe was quite possibly the best character in the show, and didn’t get enough of a role.

I’m sad that there won’t be a season 5 of Heroes :(

I don't understand odds making

If a chart says:
ManU has an 8/11 chance of winning the title
Aresenal 3/1
Man City 11/2
Chelsea 8/1

what the heck do any of those numbers mean?

by Josie Becker on Jan 15, 2011 11:15 PM PST reply actions

Whatever you bet on any of these

You will get back that fraction of it.

If you bet 100 dollars of Chelsea and they win, you will get back 800.

I think there’s still one thing I don’t understand re: Blackjack.

That confuses me as well

I would consider it 2:1, but i’ve seen others say it’s 1:1. Idk

Blackjack is 3:2

Minus any vig that may be involved of course. Blackjack doesn’t usually involve any *short of tipping your dealer), but betting does.

sure, throw out terms like vig, as if the girl who didn’t know what 3/1 meant knows what vig means

by Josie Becker on Jan 16, 2011 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

vig is also called "juice"

Ok, that doesn’t help. Look at it as a transaction fee.

Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.

by Pure Azure on Jan 16, 2011 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

gotcha, and I guess bets outside of money line and odds charge transaction fees? So those would be like bets on performance, specific scores and whatnot?

by Josie Becker on Jan 16, 2011 1:20 PM PST up reply actions

There is vig/juice on money line bets.

Example:
Giants vs Dodgers

Money line odds: Dodgers -155/+145

With no vig/juice the odds would be -150/+150.

The -155 means you bet $155 to win $100 on the Dodgers, and the 145 means you bet $100 to win $145 on the Giants. Of course that is not fair. The larger the spread from -150/150 the more vig there is and the worse the bet is. -155/145 is dime vig. Many Vegas casinos will have 20 cent vig (-160/140). And the larger the favorite is, the vig increases. This is because the books are taking a larger risk on games in which there is a big favorite.

by Xeifrank on Jan 16, 2011 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

so when Sky Sports reports that the current odds for Chelsea winning the odds is 8/1, that doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll see that line at the casino? They put their own vig on it?

by Josie Becker on Jan 16, 2011 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

Hard to say.

I am not familiar with Sky Sports. Good chances you’d get the same or very similar odds. A sports book with larger vig than Sky Sports would have them at 9:1 or something close to that (for example). A sports book with smaller vig would have them at something like 7:1. Each sports book is a little different. Online books have smaller vig than Vegas casinos. When making a bet here and there it is not a big deal. But if you make a lot of bets the Vegas casinos are a total ripoff.

by Xeifrank on Jan 16, 2011 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

A simple example would be to think of an even money bet. Like flipping a coin. Say I am the book and you want to place a bet on heads. I give you bet $11 to win $10 when a fair price would be bet $10 to win $10. I have a house edge, kind of like the roullette wheel. Over the long run after taking a lot of bets like this, I will be very rich.

It’s not like I doubted Vin, I just wasn’t expecting such an epic call for something that benefited the Giants so greatly. That game was the exact moment Giants fans began to believe something special was happening, and Vin could sense it. The Giants eventually won the World Series because of that game. Without that game, maybe the Pads creep back. Vin could pick up on the magic, and he delivered a magisterial account of the action. It was one of the greatest moments in Giants’ history, which by definition means one of the darkest in Dodgers’ history. So Vin would be excused if he delivered just a very professional call. But he kept going and going…putting us in the moment, rhapsodizing about the flight of Uribe’s home run, taking us into the dugout…It must have reminded him of his days as a young Giants fan. A truly breathtaking call.

Also, the Giants won the World Series. Jonathan Broxton was voted a World Series share. Good for him!

On the hierarchy of dating baseball fans

by Maddz on Jan 16, 2011 1:20 PM PST reply actions

I was going to go to the grocery store

but this demands my undivided attention.

I think you have to judge White Sox fans relative to Cubs fans. Cubs fans are a safe bet, because they’ll never win anything, and I feel they make a good middle line as a result. White Sox fans are less than mid-line, because they hate on Cubs fans and lack perspective.

I put Mets fans above Cubs fans, as they also have that lovable loser streak, we share a color, and they’re like the ghost of Dodgers past or something. By extension, Yankee fans are below White Sox fans.

The rest of the chart gets colored in based on likelihood of winning, franchise history (teams with shorter history are more benign) and fratness of the fanbase.

bah. The average American sports fan™ want to dilute their sports to the point that scoring has little to know meaning. The great thing about Association Football (or soccer if you will) is that a single point means so much, the tension and drama of the match are fantastic.

so like, right now I’m watching Jets-Pats. That feed is coming direct from New England, I assume. So when they decide to go to commercial, they just go to black, and it’s up to you to pump in the appropriate commercials for your local station?

by Josie Becker on Jan 16, 2011 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

Here’s how it works. You do not get the feed directly from New England. I do not get the feed directly from New England. The feed goes to CBS Master Control and they switch the event with a live producer with network commercial breaks and openings for local affiliate commercial breaks.

They do go to black during the local insertion spots. For the jets/pats game these spot’s cues are located at the end of pregame, begiining of halftime, end of half time, end of 3rd quarter, end of post game show. I punch in a local commercial break which is alotted by a specific period of time by CBS.

For example, my next break is the end-break. It will be cued by a 5 second CRIMINAL MINDS promo. At which point I switch to my local feed for 1:34.

EJR

it had its highs and lows

there was a lot of squashing of story to make it fit historically and I almost felt that when the show started to pull away from the history towards the end of the 2nd season, it was getting much better. Overall, I liked it but didn’t love it. It never made me flip out or want to go on a watching binge.

also, netflix isn’t streaming any HBO shows and when they do, it will be big, big news.

Even if Sands did really well at ST, wouldn’t it better for him to be at AA or something than sit on the bench in LA?

i believe that's everyone's contention

I think the most Sands might get is a promotion to AAA, and maybe a September call-up.

one advantage Sands, as well as other prospects have though,

is the fact Mattingly has seen them play more than just a few ST games.

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Jan 16, 2011 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

Is AAA a promotion? The best prospects are almost all at AA, until they’re ready for the AAA/MLB shuttle, which tends to be brief. By and large, the very large majority of AAA players seem to be never-has-beens.

by berkowit28 on Jan 17, 2011 12:17 AM PST up reply actions

AAA is not a dumping ground

just because we disregard all offensive stats doesn’t mean there isn’t a higher level of competition up there.

on one hand, sands can face close to major league pitching, which would be good. on the other, if he needs more time to get his ish together, it might be better for him to stick in AA. That’s my take on it.

There’s no way he’ll sit on the bench in LA. There’s almost zero chance he makes the team.

by kinbote on Jan 16, 2011 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely

But even with an amazing ST, he shouldn’t start above AA. I’d be pretty quick to bump him to AAA though, like by mid-May if he’s tearing it up. If all goes well though, he should be in line for a couple September ABs.

that the only way that Sands sees time with the big club is if Gwynn and Gibbons totally shit the bed during ST and Sands is just on point.

by Eric Stephen on Jan 17, 2011 8:15 AM PST up reply actions

I'm as confident

that Sands will see time before Sept in 2011 as I was that Manny would not see Sept for the Dodgers in 2010. If they had signed Diaz that would be a different story. There are no right handed bats left who are not injury prone even if they sign Hairston or trade for Quentin.
Xavier Paul or Gywnn might prove adequate against RHP but they will be futile against LHP, Mitchell cannot play LF and hit enough even against LHP, Hoffman the same, Casey Blake might be able to handle it at his age he’s also a injury risk. The alignment of Carroll at 2nd and Uribe at 3rd is also tentative given that one of them will be needed to play SS when Furcal goes down.
All Sands needs to do is hit in AA, and eventually this summer an opening will show itself, his job is to knock the door down, the injuries and non performance of the left fielders or 1st baseman will at some point provide him the opportunity.
