Pantry Talk

Some good info was disseminated last night regarding what to have in your pantry. Since so many of you are yutes who might be packing the pantry for the first time I thought a fan post of the suggestions would be useful. That way when you want to check it out you can simply type Pantry Talk in the archives and this fanpost will show up.

Ok, food question

what are your must haves for your pantry? I’m trying to compile a shopping list here of stuff I need to start out with and I was curious what you guys consider absolutely necessary.

I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.

Are we talking just

making breakfast, lunch and dinner, no baking, etc.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Canned

Tuna, sardines, black beans, garbanzo beans. Also, peeled tomatos, tomato sauce, maybe canned corn if you want.

Buy tomato paste in a tube, it costs more but you can keep it in the fridge for a long time, you rarely need more than a tablespoon or more at a time.

Dry pasta, penne, spaghetti. Balsami rice.

Spices, kosher salt, black peppercorns, cayenne pepper, tabasco sauce

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Cooking oils

canola, grapeseed, first cold pressed olive oil, can of spray oil (PAM).

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Aluminium foil

plastic wrap, zip locs.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions

good call, nearly forgot about those

that’s a pretty darn good list

by Hollywood Joe on Oct 18, 2011 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we went through this before

Also do not buy anything super sized unless you plan to eat all of it right away or you can freeze it.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

right.

the only thing i plan on buying in bulk are chicken breasts because they’re easy to make quickly. when i get my crock pot back, i’m gonna start experimenting again.

Chicken

Thighs, I implore you.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I like thighs better myself but they don’t come in big freezer friendly bags. I’m a broke grad student, remember. :)

Don’t need to be a member at S&F. Also, look for the weekly sales at the local grocery stores and pounce when the chicken is on sale, and put those Ziploc bags to good use!

So you would not incur HJ's wrath

I did not list any pre-made Spaghetti sauce.

by bhsportsguy on Oct 18, 2011 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I like making my own sauce, so the tomato paste and peeled tomatoes were on the list already :)

Herbs de Provence, Oregano, Nutmeg, Powdered mustard, Basil Leaves, Cumin, Kosher Salt, Vanilla, Cloves. Replace after a year if not used.

Herbes de Provence: thyme. rosemary, savory, others optional (sage, basil, lavender which is not traditional). You’re already getting two of them fresh, as you should. Might as well do them all.

Farmers Market where I live has about a dozen herbs fresh every week.

Replace after a year if not used.

Do you normally restock your spices the same time each year, or do you sharpie the dates onto the caps or something?

All kidding aside

I find the 2BC merlot and sauvingnon blanc as good wines to cook with.
