MLB Free Agency Begins Tonight
Now that the World Series is over, we can shift our full attention to the offseason. Free agency in Major League Baseball begins Saturday night at 9 p.m. PDT. In case you forgot from our roster breakdown earlier this month, the Dodgers have 10 free agents:
- Rod Barajas (projected to be a Type B at MLB Trade Rumors)
- Casey Blake
- Jonathan Broxton
- Jamey Carroll
- Jon Garland
- Hiroki Kuroda
- Mike MacDougal
- Aaron Miles
- Vicente Padilla
- Juan Rivera
MLB teams are allowed to sign their own free agents for four days, then after 9 p.m. PDT Wednesday night, November 2, free agents are allowed to sign with new clubs.
General manager Ned Colletti has expressed vague interest in bringing back several of these free agents, so I will open this up to the community. How many of these 10 players will be Dodgers in 2012? I will set the over/under at 3.5.
Let the hot stove begin!

I have to say I would like these three back.(though not for logical reasoning, but wishful thinking.
.
Kuroda
Carroll
Broxton
Of course, Ned will work something out so that he doesn’t get a draft pick for Barajas.
Ned will spend $20M on Kuroda and Rivera
Kuroda – 1 yr/$12M (no deferrals)
Rivera – 2 yr/$8M
No promises on a starting job for Rivera but he’ll get plenty of ABs at 1B (if Loney returns) and OF.
I got scared because I first saw the subject only and was trying to figure out how Kuroda and Rivera would add up to $20 million in 2012. But then I saw two years for Rivera. :)

120 million right there. Not much left for improving the offense any further. Hmmm.

Odds are against Kuroda enjoying another DL free season – Pass
Rivera, let another team give him $4 mil. per – Pass
Blake is done – Pass
Garland is done – Pass
Broxton, a change of scenery is needed – Pass
Padilla is done – Pass
Barajas is way past his prime – Pass
Carroll or Miles for utility only.
MacDougal – Yes
So this leaves 2, Carroll and MacDougal

Mac is the one I want least of all the free agents.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
I think he’s serviceable as a 7th inning guy. We all know the ugly truth behind his sparkling ERA. I’d rather have him out there than Guerrier
He’s a very interesting name for me. Love the walks.

he’s 29 years old now and hasn’t been good since 2008. He’s practically James Loney with a longer track record.
He's a good fielder and has had past success
I think he could be good again.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
During his prime from 05-08 his K% stuck at or below 20%, the last two years it’s been 25%(2010) and 28.8% (2011). That’s led to very low averages. Not only that, but he’s gone from walking from 10-13% of the time, to just 6%. His defense has gone from elite to not even average. He did not steal a single base last season. The only thing that showed up a little in 2011 was his power as he hit 10 homers in 71 games. Overall, I just can’t see a reason to be interested in this guy for anything resembling an MLB contract.
Man
I know he’ll probly go to the A’s or something, but I’d LOVE to take a chance on him for LF with a ton of incentives. To have a good back up they could resign Rivera for the main bench bat and backup LF.
Any idea how much it would take to get him?
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
as opposed to Grady and Sands, right?
I think we’d get more offense out of the first pair, but Grady won’t cost as much as Loney and it will be better defense in left out of grady.
I’d be fine with either option.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I'm not sure Grady is actually that good a fielder anymore
he might be cheaper then loney though, but not by much
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
Damn you're right
I didn’t notice his fielding had declined a lot the last 3 years.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I never really looked at this before
But in 2009 after starting off with a 5.21 ERA by his 7th start, he had a 2.10 ERA the rest of the season on. This spanned 133 innings with 146 ks, 71 walks, and only 88 hits allowed. The walks were definitely high back then, but it’s so impressive some of the runs he goes on. I was reading some old stuff on Kershaw and someone mentioned he had 5 runs allowed in 9 starts during the summer of 09, which I remembered, but just seeing the numbers again is staggering.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I wonder what type of contract Broxton is looking at. He had so much success before the 2nd half of 2010, then he was shitty then he had the injury. In my mind he could still be good or even great, but as a reliever i’m not sure he will be given the benefit of the doubt so he may have to work for his next contract by signing low with incentives.
I’d still like him to come back if it’s not for more than say 2.5 million, though i’m not sure how realistic that may be.

Chris Capuano, Freddy Garcia, Bartolo Colon, Bruce Chen, Jeff Francis, Dontrelle Willis, Jason Marquis, and Livan Hernandez are some of the 4th/5th starter types off the top of my head.
Mark Buerhle, Roy Oswalt, Kuroda, Edwin Jackson, are the better pitchers whom the Dodgers might have a shot at. Then of course there is Sabathia and WIlson at the top.
Darvish, Wada, and Iwakuma are often mentioned as well, but hard to tell exactly what type of MLB pitchers those NPBers would make.
Just checked MLBTradeRumors, here’s whom I left out:
Erik Bedard, Aaron Cook, Kyle Davies, Doug Davis, Rich Harden, Kevin Millwood, Brad Penny, Joel Piniero, Tim Wakefield, Chien Ming Wang, Brandon Webb, Chris Young, Armando Gallaraga, Rodrigo Lopez, Sergio Mitre, and Mitch Talbot.
Zach Duke, Paul Malholm, and Aaron Harang also have the change to become free agents depending on how their options turn out.
Oswalt would be nice
But i’m unsure what he would cost. I want Edwin Jackson to be honest.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
They could replace Kuroda, but they would take more years to sign. Would not leave much room in the rotation for the young guys. For 2012 that would be OK, but come 2013 there would be just one spot for De La Rosa, Eovaldi, Webster, Withrow, Lee, Gould, etc.
I guess it’s insane to assume even if we ate half the money on his 2013 slate that we could trade Ted Lilly.
Honestly I’d be fine with having Kershaw, Bills, Oswalt/Jackson, and Lilly (likely 5th, unless some team does us a solid) as 4 of the 5. Really I’m assuming De La Rosa would be the most likely for the rotation, but I think the other guys would really have to be kicked the door down to deserve a spot, which would be fine with me. If that does happen where 2 or more of them are ready, I’m sure Jackson/Oswalt could be traded for something else to make room.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
We could also trade a couple pitching prospects for a bat.
by dodgers4life on Oct 29, 2011 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions
There's always that option
and then of course most of the pitchers listed will either flame out or become bullpen arms.
I think of the pitching prospects we’ve got, De La Rosa (not really a prospect anymore) and Lee are the ones who will be MLB starters with good upside. The rest could become flame outs or pull an Elbert and be a good bullpen arm (I’m looking at Eo and Withrow).
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I think they all have shots to be 4th/5th starters though, if Kershaw and Bilingsley are 1-2, the Dodgers would just need a 3 (De La Rosa).
Possibly?
2012
Kershaw
BIllingsley
Kuroda
Lilly
free agent
2013
Kershaw
Billingsley
Lilly
De La Rosa
Eovaldi/Withrow/Webster
2014
Kershaw
Billingsley
De La Rosa
Eovaldi/Withrow/Webster
Lee/Gould
That’s true, I suppose it’s true what they say about never having too much pitching. None the less, I in no way expect the Dodgers to have the money to win the bidding for Oswalt or Jackson. It would be so easy for other teams…they would just add on a few extra mill knowing how strapped for cash the Dodgers are. The only great pitcher we could get would be Kuroda since he probably would negotiate exclusively with the Dodgers.
Kuroda and Carroll are absolutely the priorities. With guys like Rivera and Barajas, there are a bunch of similar free agents that will be around, no need to rush and sign either of them. I doubt any of the others would be signed during this period.
I’m in this camp. Rivera I would offer for cheap, but the plan is for him to be a bench/platoon guy if he’s a Dodger. Someone else is going to pay him starter money and we have no reason to match that. Carroll is valuable for his flexibility. Unless someone gives him big bucks or he really wants to be a starter (someone would have to provide an opportunity) he will end up getting PA’s. Someone in that IF is getting injured this year (looking at you Uribe).

Doug Davis, isn’t he like 75 years old? Maybe we can give Hoyt Wilhelm an incentive laden contract or Grover Cleveland Alexander if he’s out of rehab.
Re-signing Kuroda, Carroll, Barajas, and Rivera would be nice. After that, get someone off the FA market or re-sign one of the injured guys since Eo isnt ready yet.

In case anyone was wondering about Ryan Dempster, he exercised his $14 million player option today to return to the Cubs.
Speaking of, can someone explain MLBTR's thinking here?
In their new piece on free agent and trade candidate CFers, they added this:
The Giants’ Andres Torres is an even more extreme example; he projects at $2.5MM through arbitration and was arguably worth over ten times that amount last year.
Am I misunderstanding this, or are they arguing that Torres is worth 10x 2.5mm? Because I… don’t see that.

Fox said the game, in which the Cardinals clinched their 11th World Series, garnered a 16.2 rating and a 28 share of the viewing audience Friday night. It was the highest overnight rating for a World Series game since Game 4 of the 2004 Series, which drew a rating of 19.7 and a 29 share as the Boston Red Sox ended their 86-year-Series-winning-drought by beating the Cardinals.

The key to toasting pumpkin seeds is to submerge all of the pumpkin innards — seeds, goop, everything — in a bowl of water. The seeds float right to the top. You pick ‘em off, dry ’em on paper towels, toss with olive oil and salt (and cayenne pepper, if you’re kinky), and toast at 350 for 30 minutes, stirring once. Easy peasy lemon squeezy and so tasty. A necessary and wonderful part of carving a jack o’lantern with one’s children.

Galaxy
Wanted to get Josie’s opinion on that skirmish at the end of the Galaxy playoff game yesterday. In case any of you missed it, it was quite a doozy. When the game ended, with the Galaxy winning in New York 1-0. A player from the New York team picked up the ball and chucked it at one of the Galaxy players and hit him on the leg. One of the other Galaxy players took exception to it and shoved the New York player. The skirmish ended with two New York players down on the ground in the fetal position. Hilarious. In a soccer fight, you can pretty much tell which players are the Americans and which aren’t. Don’t go to the ground unless kicked in the nuts or bleeding badly.
MLB Radio is a tease
They played an ad saying “Let’s talk about the front office changes in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.” I got really excited, and then remembered how bad the national media is at geography.
