Angelo Songco and Other AZ Observations
I stopped by Camelback this morning to check out the Instructional League action and was able to talk to Songco. He will not be playing in the AFL, but will be playing in the Co-op League. Perhaps unrelated to not being on an AFL roster, he's been off for about a week with a shoulder problem. He hit today and did very well when he pulled the ball...not so well when coaches asked him to go the other way. One front office person told him this wasn't Rancho and that the money was in the opposite field. I think he meant it in a joking/motivational way, but his gruff delivery may have belied his intent.
I saw a lot of BP, but the best and most entertaining by far (not saying much when Barbary, Shoemaker, Reed and Juan Castro are the other "pitchers" ;-) ) was from Matt Herges. He threw a harder-than-normal BP and during the last round, when hitters got 3 balls to hit, he challenged them to hit a HR for $20. All was going well until Tyler Ogle (95% sure, all the guys were in shorts and t-shirts) went yard. After Ogle's round, Herges called off all subsequent bets with a laugh.
I'll be going back for the 12:30 Co-op game to watch the Dodger/Sox team.
