Dodgers Saturday Links: Ned Colletti, Rafael Furcal, Hitting Prospects
Here are some Dodgers-related links for a Saturday:
- Ned Colletti was interviewed by Jim Bowden of ESPN earlier this week, and Mike Petriello at Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness did his best to sift through to find the truth.
- Jon Weisman has been remembering each member of the 2011 Dodgers one by one, and his latest remembrance is of Rafael Furcal, who tripled and scored the only run of Game 5 of the NLDS on Friday night in Philadelphia and also made a defensive play in the eighth inning that made us all say wow.
- Seedling To Stars took a stab at evaluating some Dodgers hitting prospects, including Angelo Songco, Alfredo Silverio, Jake Lemmerman, O'Koyea Dickson, and Brian Cavazos-Galvez, among others.

A great Jim Murray line about Mr. Davis
But, what am I telling you? Nobody messes with Al Davis, right? Not unless they want to find themselves out in the cold, wondering what happened to their pants.
Brent Musburger started gushing about Rafael Furcal during the OU-Tex game, saying he’s got one of the strongest arms in the game.

salary dump
I thought then and still think now we gave the Cards a gift in the Furcal deal and should have gotten more for him, but I guess that’s business… at least the way Colletti does it.
This was too harsh
Apologies for that. Just thought that Furcal wasn’t hitting anything and hasn’t really been healthy for the better part of the last two years.
There wasn’t much of a market for Furcal and that Colletti got anything for him was a win.
by Eric Stephen on Oct 8, 2011 3:04 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Yes – only because Furcal had a fairly decent week of play before the trade deadline were the Dodgers able to get anything for him.
It was “win-win” for both teams: Furcal helped the Cadinals, and Gordon got to play every day.
We were out of contention and got a prospect in return for him. Even if Castle ends up only ever being a AAAA OF it was still a good deal for the Dodgers.
Jon Weisman said it well in his linked above story
Furcal went 0 for 4 in a loss to Washington that dropped the Dodgers’ record to 43-56 and lowered his season on-base percentage to .220 and slugging percentage to .200. The notion that Furcal would be boosting his team into the National League Championship Series could hardly have been more absurd.
Well, it could have been a lot more absurd if he hadn’t already established a career as a very good player with the capability at times of carrying a team. Plus he’d been injured, and if he somehow was going to stay healthy then there was a good chance he’d play quite well. Why else would the Cardinals want him? It wasn’t really absurd at all. A bet, yes, but far from a long shot.
Even if he played the best baseball of his life what would that have done for the Dodgers? We weren’t making the playoffs this year with or without Furcal being on the team after the trade deadline. That and if he had stayed with us it would have meant less playing time for Dee. Less time to evaluate whether or not Dee could start for us next year.
It’s also not as if there were a bunch of teams after Furcal. The Cardinals were the only team that wanted him. It was either take what they were offering or do nothing.
I had a hunch he would really help them
but who could have foreseen this? Especially after the Dodgers swept them in what, August? They looked dead.

6 possessions: 6 touchdowns in the first half against Air Force.
The defense isn’t as impressive. Air Force’s triple option attack is carving up the defense.
We'll be releasing our secret weapon against Cal on Thursday
I will be surprised if we don’t spank Cal because of it. Like, extremely surprised.

“Joe Buck. I told his old man 20 years ago that his snot-nosed spawn was a worthless piece of shit. If Jesus Christ himself returned to Earth in the middle of a ballgame that Joe Buck was calling, his voice would still be a monotone. Damn it, honeybunch! I wanted the extra cheese on my half! Fuck!”
- Vin Scully, watching the game at home
Haha!
Joe Buck always seems to have a bug up his ass. He is very negative. Does he ever give praise to anyone?
While discussing Kershaw, he mentioned that he pitched great this year for a “bad” Dodger team. Do your homework, Joe. The Dodgers were mediocre, not bad!
Yes, they were playing poorly at that point, but for the season, the Dodgers were not a “bad” team. There’s no arguing that – the record speaks for itself. 82-79.
I do agree that Buck probably never checked where the Dodgers were in the standing after July, though. He skates by on whatever baseball knowledge he deems appropriate for his current assignment. Kind of like cramming for a final….
The lack of wins will be forgotten when everyone is counting the paychecks they get from the Big 10.

jcrasnick: Add Cole Hamels to the list, and three #Phillies players had hernias. That just about sums up the end of the season.

Seems to be in either 2014, or 2015, but there are sources that say 2012 is the last guaranteed year.

Too many unknowns to be able to answer this. If he’s able to sign Kemp and Kershaw to team friendly longterm deals then he earns himself some points. If the Dodgers make it to the playoffs each year between now and then then he’d have to keep his job (if McCourt still owns the team).
If a new owner comes in then anything is possible.
If a new owner comes in, I think he gets lets go no matter what. He’s been the GM for the last 5 years, going into his 6th. And if you’re the new owner, you want to put your stamp on the team. The GM works directly under the owner in most organizations, you want a guy you know you can work with.
Isn’t it just as possible that Ned sits down with a new owner and they get along well? There is no way to tell what will happen, but if the team is winning it might not matter. Owners like to win.
Jim Hendry kept his job for several years after the Cubs were sold. He did that while putting a horrible product out on the field.
I can come up with plenty of instances of where guys get fired and just as many where guys keep their jobs.
In the end it all goes to show that anything is possible.

The old printscreen button will essentially “copy” your screen to the clipboard. Then paste it somewhere.

the print icon on the top toolbar?
Hmm, I tried and I can’t paste anywhere…plus I don’t know how to access the clipboard. Forgive me, I am sometimes quite computer illiterate.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
On my machine it is “prt sc”, but on older PCs it used to spell out “print screen.”
And I was able to paste it in the application “paint.” Open up “paint” and then push “Control and V” which should paste it.
by Michael White on Oct 8, 2011 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions
If that doesn’t work and you have a newer machine, I have a program called “snipping tool.” If you have that, it’s actually rather self-explanatory. You can essentially highlight with the mouse the areas you want to convert into the screen shot.

OK, I tried the button
I never use those buttons so it didn’t hit me at first what you said, but I pressed it and now I have it in paint.
Thanks a lot.

Any sign or word if they'll be resuming play in Texas?

Rain delays
I think the first one nearly cost Texas the game as Wilson was crap after the 1st rain delay. But I think the second rain delay saved them for now as it got him out of the game. Should be an exciting finish. If it indeed finishes tonight.

Rival executives getting signals that the Reds won’t shop Joey Votto — but that they are fully prepared to listen to offers.
Steep price, I’m sure. Gordon, Jansen & Zach Lee?
I'm kinda partial to Jansen
I mean, what if he had half the career Rivera has had? Other than that, I wouldn’t really cry over Zach Lee & the like.
Dodgers
Owe Bills more money, albeit for an additional year, than the Reds owe Votto for the next two.
Short answer, Votto is one of the top ten offensive players in MLB, I can’t see any team coming up with a package worthy of that. Unless the Reds can’t afford him anymore.
Votto makes 17M in 2013 and Bills makes 11M in 2013. I don’t know if they have enough money to keep Votto long term since when he is a free agent he will command a huge contract. The Reds have Alonso to take over for Votto and need pitching. I think that Billingsley and a couple of minor league pitchers not named Zach Lee would be the best package we could offer.
We are so due to get fortunate with a hitter in the draft…
We also seem to produce a 300HR 1b every decade or so… we’re due there too
by Jack Huber on Oct 8, 2011 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Even if this were the case, Votto could help now, as opposed to Theoretical Boy that you’re assuming will be ready in a few years. If Ned isn’t at least kicking the tires on something that starts with “Hey, so Andre Ethier is pretty good…” and/or “We’ve got a whole bunch of quality arms, pick your three favorites and take Dee too”, he isn’t doing his job.
Jocketty is almost certainly going to hang up right away, but you never know.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
We were lucky with Kemp, a 6th rounder
I haven’t been convinced that drafting high necessarily brings better fortunes.
Slugging first basemen, however, do seem to regularly appear on the scene one after another like Trumbo, Freeman, Morse, and maybe even Goldschmidt in this year alone.
Kemp And Nothing?
I don’t think we can re-write history to say that Russell Martin was not an All-Star-calibre catcher (till he wasn’t anymore). I read somewhere that only 6% of first round draft picks last at least six years in the majors. James Loney is either one of them or will be one of them depending on how that time is calculated. Blake DeWitt is a major leaguer even if he isn’t starting regularly. A.J Ellis will be a major leaguer for all of 2012, and so will Gordon; likely Jerry Sands too. Robinson could work out fine for the Mariners. Then we have a bunch of position players in the minors who could make the majors, possibly as regulars. Kemp is not the whole story, but frankly he is a big enough one that even if he were the only position player White produced, that would be an accomplishment better than what most teams got in any single hitter in the draft in the last decade.
Just because you make it to the majors and stick around it doesn’t mean you are a good major league hitter.
I Answered A Claim About "Kemp and Nothing"....
I never said Loney has been a “good major league hitter.” He is a major league starter and has been for a good number of years, and that is all one needs to refute the implication that he is “nothing,” leaving aside the other players like Martin who also weren’t “nothing.”
Paul Konerko would’ve been a nice career dodger.
by lnickerson88 on Oct 9, 2011 10:44 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I’m not sure most people realize just how good of a player Votto is. Votto didn’t get much recognition this year because of how bad the Reds were but throughout the year he was the 3rd of 4th best hitter in the NL.
So basically, think of a package you would want for trading Kemp away and add another good prospect to it and you might get Votto (mainly because Votto is locked up longer).

The SEC and Big 12 reps both go undefeated, those teams will be in the title game. You could have an undefeated Stanford and Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl.
