5 pitchers

Why do they vote up to 10 spots?
At that point you’re note even in the real conversation for MVP and you’re just the 9th best guy who didn’t win it.

And can you choose just to fill as many places as you want, and not all 10 if you don’t want to? E.g., can you just vote up to 5 places, say?

Right. Even 10th place has 24 votes.
OK, so 1 voter didn’t think Bautista was in the top 10 of the league? And 2 voters think Ellsbury was not in the top 10?
More evidence of “tactical voting” – i.e. dishonest voting, to try to keep an outstanding player from winning because he’s not the guy you want. Like yesterday’s.
I have to say that I don’t think much of SBN writers/voters in general. I like that you (Eric and Phil) voted honestly, yesterday, anyway. And I’m sure you have no stake in the AL voting to warp that either.
OK, so 1 voter didn’t think Bautista was in the top 10 of the league? And 2 voters think Ellsbury was not in the top 10?

Is not new, in 1999, two writers kept Pedro MartInez off their ballots completely. The 1947 AL MVP vote has been examined since DiMaggio won it. Ted Williams was not even given a 10th place vote which could have won him the award (although DiMaggio also wasn’t named on a few ballots plus was given an 8th, 9th, and 10th place vote)

Before I hang anyone, I don’t know what I don’t know.
There is nothing worse to me than child abuse, I can’t even watch a movie where it happens or is even implied. It makes me sick and violent and crazed. I cannot think of an atrocity more disgusting to me.
That said, can I imagine someone telling me something awful, maybe not child rape, but awful, about someone I work with, or a friend, and after a considerable night of misery I turn that friend in to the authorities and trust in that process.
Could I imagine then seeing the authorities clear my friend and somehow being relieved and buying into it. Trusting that they did their job and happy at the outcome….
Well maybe. I don’t know.

I think it goes to prove that bloggers are just as ignorant as the writers who are allowed to vote. I doubt they had any collusion in mind since the votes are all published. Just because you get to blog about baseball doesn’t mean you are any more intelligent about the game then TJ Simers. Everyone has their own view of what an MVP is.

If someone believes Bats deserves the MVP over Ellsbury, that’s fine. If they believe Cabrera and Granderson or whomever was better than Ellsbury that’s fine too. But saying that 10 people in the league were more deserving than him, or than Bautista is offensive.

Shockingly Blake DeWitt is consistent, left handed, can play a good to great 3rd base, and is adequate at second base. He’s the perfect bench player.

Simply hard to find an infielder who does not start who has posted an OPS+ of 93, 92, and 95 in the years he’s been given decent at bats.

Where’s the Dodger pick, about 18? Supplementals for Type Bs are around where, high 40s to low 50s?

His career is long enough that the “similarity scores” might not be utter bullshit. His through age-33 per B-R:
1. Roy Halladay (950)The Candy Man! Not a bad group.

Barajas, at least.

so we ddid offer arb to barajas??
and he signed so we are geting a pick?

its automatic
since he signed before the deadline or something like that
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
From what I gather if a FA signs before the deadline to offer arb it is automatically assumed they were offered arb and you get the pick.

Since Eric has said that Kuroda has an agreement that the Dodgers
Not to offer arbitration, the only reason for the Dodgers to offer arbitration to their remaining free agents would be as an attempt to keep them.
by bhsportsguy on Nov 10, 2011 11:49 AM PST up reply actions
November 23 would be the date for that. But as BH noted, there is nobody left who would net the Dodgers any compensation.

Come to us, Ramon Hernandez.

If Rotation stays:
Clayton, Chad, Lilly, and Kuroda
We are really looking for a placeholder in 2012 until Rubby is ready, or we use Eovaldi who some of us don’t think is ready for prime time.
Of these Free Agents who do offer a deal for keeping in mind that 2013 will surely not have Kuroda but at least two of Rubby, Eovaldi, Webster.
Eric Bedard – solid base but huge incentives for one year
Mark Buehrle – probably not signing for less then three years so I dont’ see a fit
Capuano – might be a perfect fit, fifth spot, 2/8 should swing it.
Zach Duke – definition of a place holder
Andres Gallarrag- mister one hit might be able to handle the fifth spot along with Eveland until Rubby or Eovaldi are ready
Aaron Harang – probably looking for a multi year deal and will probably be more then I’d want to spend
Paul MaHolm – might cost more then Capuano and might be looking for more then two years.
Now if Kuroda walks then maybe Roy Oswalt is the right man for the job.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
If Kuroda walks i want Buehrle.
If he stays, I’d take Bedard or Harang.

I'd be happy with a 2 (not likely) or 3 year deal for Oswalt
that would be assuming Kuroda walks.

Only if they are offered arb
So I’m guessing a couple of them won’t, but who knows.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
guess for who will not be offered arb
Ortiz, Madson, Bell, Hernandez, Cuddyer, Willingham, Johnson, Capps, Oliver, Rodriguez, Dotel, Saito, Cordero
I think Bell and Cordero will for the closers. You’re probably right about the rest, though I have a feeling Willingham will be offered it.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
Padres can’t afford to take on Bell at $10mil+ anymore than the Reds can afford to pay Francisco Cordero $13mil
He knows he should be in for a good pay day
Bell that is. The Reds really like Cordero from stuff I read earlier in the year, and they were already paying him 8 figures before, I don’t think they’d mind having him back, especially if they decide to put Chapman as a starter again.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
that’s their elias score. I don’t know the exact equations off the top of my head, but clicking the link would offer insight
gives credit to things like saves, holds, ERA, appearances, innings pitched as opposed to the sabremetric stats.
Hell, Barajas is only a Type B because of his HRs.
I don’t think you really even need to get into sabremetrics to tweak the formula to make it work better.
I’ve never dug into it enough to have an insight as to what exactly the formulaic tweaks would be, but intuitively when I see that half of the type As are relievers (many middle relievers) it doesn’t look right.
Then no one wants to sign these guys and therein lies the problem. The fix is probably something simple like removing counting stats or something.
Maybe. Like I said I’ve never really dug into it.
I would think something simple like use OPS and then tier the value of that OPS based on # of AB’s. Then do the same for pitchers based on ERA and # of IP. No need to get too complex because it will even out for everyone based on how they actually performed.
haha
uh you’d think they would get a better photo for vick
