Dodgers Add Five To 40-Man Roster; Ely & Monasterios Outrighted To Triple A

Chris Withrow was one of five additions to the Dodgers 40-man roster on Friday night.

The Dodgers on Friday added Michael Antonini, Stephen Fife, Josh Wall, and Chris Withrow, and outfielder Alex Castellanos to the 40-man roster. This protects them from the Rule 5 draft, which will take place on December 8 at baseball's Winter Meetings. Two weeks ago, Brandon Lennox outlined the possible additions to the roster.

Wall (2005 second round) and Withrow (2007 first round) were drafted by the Dodgers, but the other three have been acquired by trades in the last 11 months. The Dodgers got Antonini from the Mets for shortstop Chin-Lung Hu, they got Fife along with catcher Tim Federowicz and pitcher Juan Rodriguez from the Red Sox for outfielder Trayvon Robinson, and plucked Castellanos from the Cardinals for shortstop Rafael Furcal.

In addition, the Dodgers removed pitchers John Ely and Carlos Monaterios from the 40-man roster, outrighting them to Triple A Albuquerque. With these moves the Dodgers now have 38 players on the 40-man roster.

Cots Contracts

If the player is not claimed (clears waivers), the club may option him or assign him outright to the minor leagues, though he must continue to be paid according to the terms of his contract. A player may be assigned outright to the minors only once in his career without his permission. Thereafter, he may either 1) reject the assignment and become a free agent, or 2) accept the assignment and become a free agent at the end of the season if he’s not back on the 40-man roster. Additionally, player with 3 years of major league service may refuse an outright assignment and choose to become a free agent, regardless of whether he has been sent outright to the minors previously. A player with 5 years of major league service time who refuses an outright assignment is entitled to the money due according to the terms of his contract.

Are we sure about "yes"?

Have either been outrighted before? I think there is some six-year rule; Monk has been in the minors six years, but Ely only five.

I wrote this in the last thread of who is avaliable for the Rule 5 draft after these additions

Ethan Martin, Kyle Russell, Tony Delmonico, Jon Michael Redding, Cole St. Clair, Nick Buss, Jordan Roberts, Austin Gallagher, Andres Santiago, Chris Jacobs, Griff Erickson, Justin Miller, Tim Sexton, Jaime Pedroza, Matt Wallach, Pedro Baez, Geison Aguasviva, Rafael Ynoa, Carlos Frias, Bladimir Franco, Ramon Jean, Jose Dominguez, Daniel Tamares, Charlie Mirabal, Pedro Guerrero, Elian Herrera, Josh Walter, Steve Smith, Joseph Becker, Robert Booth

Not 100% sure on E Martin, but I do think he is eligible

by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 7:47 PM PST reply actions

Some of the lower level guys (like Gallagher) will need to be put on the AAA or AA rosters to protect them from the minor league phase of the draft, correct?

by latenite on Nov 18, 2011 7:53 PM PST up reply actions

that's correct

but those offseason minor league rosters are never made available so we just have to wait and see if we lose anyone in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft

by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 8:09 PM PST up reply actions

Did you ever write a primer on the minor league rule 5? I have no idea how that works.

by Michael White on Nov 18, 2011 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

Here is a good primer

From Official Minor League Baseball Site

There are also Triple-A and Double-A phases to the Rule 5 Draft. Players selected from an organization’s Double-A reserve list must spend the next season on his new team’s Triple-A reserve list or on the Major League roster. Players selected from an organization’s Class A, Short-Season or Rookie reserve lists must spend the next season on the new organization’s Double-A or higher reserve list. Players put on the Triple-A reserve list cost the selecting team $12,000, and players put on the Double-A reserve list cost the selecting team $4,000.

A player on a reserve list may not play for any team at a level below the level he’s reserved for, but that player need not be on the active roster for the level at which he’s reserved. For instance, a player on a Double-A reserve list may not be on an active roster for a team at any level below Double-A, but he may participate in extended spring training and does not have to be on the organization’s Double-A, Triple-A or Major League active roster.

I still think they will make three major league additions this offseason:

starting pitcher
backup infielder
relief pitcher

If E Martin is indeed not eligible, I’d hazard a wild guess that Cole St. Clair is the most likely to be lost. A LOOGY with more than one year AA experience could be of some use to other teams. Houston drafted Wesley Wright, who fit that profile, away from LA.

otherwise even if Martin hadn't hurt his knee after getting drafted

the Dodgers could have held Martin out of games in 2008 just so he wouldn’t be eligible for the rule 5 a year earlier

by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

I think you

also have to play a minimum number of games for it to be considered a full year of minor league service time.

The system is set up to keep the players with the team that signed them as long as they can without having to do anything with them.

by bhsportsguy on Nov 18, 2011 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

Baseball America

uses the term “four years of minor league service.”

What is the Rule 5 draft?

The Rule 5 draft takes place every year during the Winter Meetings. Players who are not on a 40-man roster and have four years of minor league service (five years if they signed when they were younger than 19 on the June 5 immediately prior to their signing) are eligible to be selected in the major league phase of the draft. In order for a team to make a selection, it must have an opening on its 40-man roster. Teams must pay $50,000 to select a player in the draft, payable to the team which loses the player.

Players selected must remain on the selecting team’s 25-man major league roster throughout the next season or be offered back to the team from which they were drafted (for $25,000).

examines the “we want flexibility / payroll is going down” statements from Colletti and wonders what’s up:

There’s no way Stewart and Kemp could have missed Colletti’s previous comments or been unaware of the Dodgers financial issues as they go through this sale process. Remember, Colletti and Kemp are close now. They’ve repaired their relationship and talk often. Colletti and Stewart go back 30 years.

So you have to wonder whether something else is going on here.

Could Kemp and Stewart be ratcheting up the pressure on McCourt to give Colletti the chance to make a realistic run at Fielder? Or at least not be hamstrung with a budget smaller than last season’s?

Here is my official prediction from the thread before the season
Ok, I was really close on his numbers for 2010, let’s hope I can do the same for 2011
Kershaw 2011:

2.55 ERA
1.10 WHIP
235 strikeouts
222.2 Innings
75 Walks
170 Hits

Top 3 in Cy Young voting

not only exceed but EXCEED Everything!!

better ERA by a little… WHIP by a lot… more IP K’s WAY less walks…. Those numbers you predicted would Be GREAT… lol but kershaw killed them all..

by matthewmafa on Nov 19, 2011 7:57 PM PST up reply actions

The walks are really the one that blows me away the most. He went from a guy who was good despite bad control, to a guy who actually has good control. Not just acceptably good, but genuinely good.

The first season things break their way and they cant get it done on their end.

by Joey Joe on Nov 18, 2011 9:06 PM PST reply actions

They weren’t making the championship game if they won out. Alabama was ahead of them and Oregon would have jumped them as well.

by VegasBlues on Nov 18, 2011 9:08 PM PST up reply actions

This sounds like a coping mechanism :)

by Michael White on Nov 18, 2011 9:14 PM PST up reply actions

I was hoping for it all year long. I knew it wasn’t going to happen though. When you continually see your team win by 40+ points over the years and still drop in the polls you know it’s coming. They had a very good chance at being in a BCS game but never at being in the championship.

by VegasBlues on Nov 18, 2011 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

I think Boise State as an undefeated would have jumped Alabama or Oregon at some point.
Too bad the Houston Cougars started so low this year..

by Joey Joe on Nov 18, 2011 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

How would they have jumped them? TCU wouldn’t have been back in the top 25 without their win last week and the rest of the teams on BSU’s schedule are going to do nothing but hurt them.

by VegasBlues on Nov 18, 2011 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

yep, i think voters would have voted up to #2 another undefeated to prevent a rematch…but they wont vote up another 1 losser to prevent a rematch.

by Joey Joe on Nov 18, 2011 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

you know all the voters are over 35, or the vote would be like 3-2

by G.Scott on Nov 18, 2011 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

The voters were why BSU was as high as they were. It would have been hard for them to get much more of a boost from them.

by VegasBlues on Nov 18, 2011 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

Oh and even if Houston goes undefeated they don’t deserve a BCS bowl bid. Their schedule makes BSU’s look like they’re in the SEC.

by VegasBlues on Nov 18, 2011 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

You can only beat the teams on your schedule.

/I’ve said that tons of times referring to BSU

It's actually 12.4 million

“Starting next year, teams will have to make a “qualifying offer” of a one-year guaranteed contract to their players eligible to become free agents in order to receive compensation if the player signs with another club. That amount will be at least $12.4 million and could rise by next year, depending on a formula. The new “qualifying offer” does away with the statistical formula for ranking free agents that has existed since the 1981 strike settlement."

SEC West....ruling the BCS
  1. - LSU
  2. Alabama
  3. - Arkansas

Unreal…I think LSU could theoretically lose to Georgia in the SEC title game, but still only drop to #2..

Then you’d have the BCS champion not even winning its conference.

by Joey Joe on Nov 19, 2011 9:48 PM PST reply actions

no surprise of course

but other then SEC schools the only school of note on Bamas schedule was Penn State. Arkansas played no one worth talking about outside of the SEC. SEC SO GOOD BECAUSE SEC BEATS SEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If LSU dropped to #2 after losing to Georgia and Alabama was #1 then LSU would not play in the BCS Championship game. Only 2 teams per conference can make it into BCS games and 1 of those 2 slots would go to Georgia for winning the conference. In this scenario the next highest rated non-SEC school would play against Alabama.

The BCS champion could still be a team that didn’t win it’s conference but it wouldn’t be a game between 2 SEC teams that didn’t win it.

by VegasBlues on Nov 19, 2011 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

If Georgia somehow made it up to #3 then it could be 2 SEC teams in the game because they would be the conference champion.

by VegasBlues on Nov 19, 2011 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

nope, there can be 3 conference teams in BCS if top 2 are in BCS standings
No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.

I think LSU only drops to #2 even if they lose to Georgia.

Should have plenty of time to talk to each other on Christmas Day. Without the NBA, there will only be one live sporting event scheduled that day, Sunday Night Football game between Chicago and Green Bay. There are no other NFL games (bulk of schedule on Satruday December 24th), no NHL games, no NCAA basketball and no Bowl games.

I really dont know, but maybe because they barely run the football, so even though they score alot their defense is on the field alot?

by uschris0304 on Nov 20, 2011 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

Their rushing defense is 8th in the league. Their passing defense gives up tons of yards because they are always up in games, but they also have the most interceptions in football because of how often teams pass on them.

by VegasBlues on Nov 20, 2011 12:31 PM PST up reply actions

Man, Bills are really falling apart, wish Raiders got to play them later in schedule, oh well. I guess teams caught up with that short passing game. Or maybe Fitz got paid and said fuck it.

Ha. I think the Bills are now the worst team in the NFL. The same thing happened in 2008. They started 5-1, gave the coach, Dick Jauron, a contract extension, then finished the season 7-9. Jauron was fired in 2009. Maybe they will learn not to give contract extensions during the season.
