2012 TBLA #4 Dodger Prospect Discussion
Nate Eovaldi started to run away with the #3 prospect vote, so we are declaring him the early winner and moving on to the #4 prospect vote. Since this next vote figures to be a bit closer, we'll let that one run all weekend. Monday. Voting Fanpost can be found here.
I'm not going to add anyone to the mix this time around, but will be including several new names for the next vote on Monday. Voting Fanpost can be found here.
Here are the candidates for the Dodgers #4 prospect:
Chris Reed - LHP (21.5 years old) - This year's 1st round pick only threw 7 innings in his professional debut, but as the Stanford closer Reed had a 2.56 ERA in 2011 and struck out a batter per inning. The Dodgers plan to use him as a starter, and he figures to move quickly through the system. The lefty can touch 96 mph and has 3 quality pitches (fastball, power slider, and an above-average changeup)
Garrett Gould - RHP (20.25 years old) - Gould had a breakthrough season in 2011 as he ranked 2nd in the Midwest League with his 2.40 ERA. His FIP was also solid at 3.31, and he had a 7.6 K/9. The big righty possesses a low 90's fastball with good sink and an average changeup, but he's best known for his big 12-to-6 curveball that ranked as one of the best of the 2009 draft.
Joc Pederson - OF (19.5 years old) - Pederson's name was scattered all over the Pioneer League Leaderboard after a big offensive season that saw him hit .353 with 11 homers, 24 SB's, and a .997 OPS. As I mentioned last year he has 5-tool potential, although none of his 5 tools seem to have a particularly high ceiling. Scouts don't think he'll be able to handle center field in the big leagues, but believe he can play either corner outfield spot.
Chris Withrow - RHP (22.5 years old) - Withrow had a quiet, yet solid campaign in 2011 as he posted a 4.20 ERA in AA to go along with a 3.86 FIP and a 9.1 K/9. He continues to struggle with control, but is armed with a hard fastball, a very good curveball, and a changeup that Baseball America calls fringy. He's still in the rotation for now, although there have been talks that he could move to the bullpen if he can't improve his walk rate.
James Baldwin - OF (20 years old) - Baldwin started the 2011 season on fire, and while he cooled down as the year progressed he still finished with 10 homers, 22 stolen bases, and a .828 OPS. Many people call him the most exciting prospect since Matt Kemp, although Baldwin struggles with strikeouts much more than Kemp did. He should have no trouble handling center field as he moves up through the minors.
Please use this post as the discussion thread, and cast your actual vote in this Fanpost. For those of you who don't remember from last year, having the voting in a separate post makes it easier for me to count up the results.

Gould
Basically the same age as Lee, had a better year than Lee and has a plus curve ball to work with.
I agree. Why gould is not getting higher ranking i don’t understand. Its as if people have an agenda against the guy. Next year he’ll have another year better than Lee and be considered a worse prospect … bank on it.

I know when I go to sleep at night I go, “Fuck that Gould guy”
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
@maddzgoesrawr @arenafitness
For me, Lee gets the benefit of the doubt because this was his first season as a pro.
If Gould does better than Lee this year as well, then all bets are off.
That and because the Dodger scouts thought he was worth a $5M bonus, equivalent to being a high 1st round pick, a bonus that few prospect/draft mavens panned.

….he had extreme leverage with the two sport college scholarship thing. It’s not like he was a better baseball prospect than Kershaw who even after adjusting for baseball inflation (or something) wouldn’t have gotten that deal. Lee had more leverage than Kershaw (or Gould and certainly Reed.)

Leverage is great, but even with leverage, you have to believe he’s worth somewhere near $5M to give him $5M.

I’m going to take Angel over Gould. Gould is one of those guys who will have to keep doing well each step of the way, I have a hard time putting low 90 guys in my top 5.

Ryan Doumit wanted to play in the AL
per Jerry Crasnick:
Ryan Doumit agrees to 1-year, $3M deal with #Twins, says BB source. Deal includes undisclosed performance bonuses. Pending physical.
He really just wanted to play with Jamey Carroll.

so Is Mauer hurt? not playing catcher anymore? or did Doumit just sign to be a backup?

Mike Lombardi from NFL.COM on Tebow - nails it
All I could think about watching Tebow lead the Broncos on the game-winning drive was a Mark Twain quote about sword fighting, from “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.”
The best swordsman in the world doesn’t need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn’t do the thing he ought to do and so the expert isn’t prepared for him; he does the thing he ought not to do; and often it catches the expert out and ends him on the spot.
Here's a game that will infuriate you after you end it

I never used fangraphs or any advanced metrics before I found TBLA but shit like that turns me away from them. Looks like they were plenty of good examples for kershaw and they got overlooked
The main thing about the FanGraphs story that bugs is that he basically says there is NO other choice but Halladay being the deserving CYA winner.
If he had said, “Well, Halladay could have and maybe should have won” instead of saying, “OMG, Halladay is heads and shoulders above everyone else in the NL!!!!” then I wouldn’t have minded as much.
He picked Kershaw as his choice back in September
and apparently he says he just flopped on it.

The Giants are the most popular baseball team in California, per a recent poll:
-Shifting gears to sports, UCLA at 27% and Stanford at 26% lead the way for the most popular out of the state’s Pac 12 schools with Cal-Berkeley at 20% and USC at 14% further back. There’s a partisan divide on that question with Democrats preferring UCLA and Republicans going for Stanford.Though this is registered voters and not the full population.
.
When it comes to California’s favorite major league baseball team the San Francisco Giants win out with 25% to 16% for the Los Angeles Dodgers, 15% for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 9% for the Oakland A’s, 8% for the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres, 6% for the New York Yankees, 5% for the Boston Red Sox, and 2% for the Atlanta Braves.

Frankie McC
"I’ve watched Matt grow up and I’m proud of him. If he continues to grow, there is no doubt in my mind that he is the player this franchise and this community needs. I wish him a tremendous next eight years and also beyond that. Teams need players that stay with one franchise their whole career and I’m very happy for him."
Neddie C
"Matt has become one of the best players in the game. He is a player with power, speed and a strong defensive skill set. He has grown as a leader and is someone who never wants to be out of the lineup. At his age, with his talent and passion to be great, we felt Matt was worthy of a deal of this magnitude and are excited about keeping him in the Dodger family for a long time to come."
Matty K
"I have truly been embraced by the L.A. fans. They’ve made Los Angeles home for me. It’s a great feeling to know I’m going to be here for the next eight years, but my goal is to be a Dodger for life – this is where I aim to be until I retire."

Since payroll figures to be at about 115M there is only about 10M to spend. But could we get creative and free up some money by trading Loney and a prospect or two for a cheap SP and sign Prince to a backloaded contract?
We could get all the deferred money guys to give back their money, Jamie to give up $30 million of her settlement, Vin to work for free next year, have Cuban buy a luxury suite for $1.2 billion by next Saturday. I can see this happening.

Wow, what a slow, wack ass day today. Thank god its friday though. You guys gave me nothing to work with today. Maybe that was the plan! Where is everyone on vacation? Good thing im off in about 8 mins.
Kemp wants Fielder
Lets hope it happens.
According to his agent, Dave Stewart, Kemp agreed to take less in the first year of the new contract in order to give the club more financial flexibility. Stewart also said that Kemp asked him to get the deal done quickly, so the team could make a run at some of the top free agents on the market, most notably Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder.
yeah I heard that. Question is did Kemp/Stewart talk about this with Ned? Maybe Kemp should of said get me Prince and i’ll sign for this before signing?
Also hoping maybe Dodgers are playing low pro, pretending they cant get in on Fielder, to sneak in last minute and snatch him up. Probably not, but I can hope I guess.
hope is not a strategy, but can provide warmth on an otherwise cold winters night

Well, does seem like every now and then, with top FAs, there is some team that flies in and swoops a top FA up that wasnt even talked about, or one of the favorites to land him. But anyways, Kemp should of played hard ball, told Ned get me Prince, THEN I will sign.

Kemp seems to be good friends with Fielder. Hopefully he can recruit him to play in LA. With payroll probably going to be about what it was last year we have about 10M to spend. Maybe Kemp can convince him to take a similar deal like he took.

I know airports
That is Terminal 1 at LAX
Airlines are Southwest and USAIR
I hope Matty is A) Catching a flight to Vegas to turn that $160M into real cash or B) flying to Glendale to get in a little offseason work.
If he is flying longer than 90 minutes, he chose the wrong airlines and need to hire me as his travel coordinator for $400K per year

I bet HJ
got one of those special frequent business flyer passes that let’s him go through another way (still TSA).
I suddenly want to ask if the Dodgers own their own plane, or if they just charter one each road trip
by Josie Becker on Nov 18, 2011 6:51 PM PST up reply actions
I’m fairly certain they don’t own a plane, but that they do charter one

Once upon a time
They did own their own plane.

Dodgers payroll
It would be great if the Dodgers could come in and get Fielder. Still don’t see how we can do it given what has been written about lowering our payroll.
Yet according to Trade Rumors we are still interested in signing Codero!
I showed his picture to the 28ish year old girl that sits next to me, and she said “who is that”..“that’s Matt Kemp, CF for the Dodgers”…“He’s ugly”
end of conversation
She’s racist.
Did you follow up with, “he just signed a contract that pays him $160M over the next 8 years.”

Eli manning ranked 3rd this week by ESPN, Matt Ryan ranked 7th. Good problem to have, but makes choosing the wrong one suck more.
Why haven’t you tried to trade one of them yet?
by Michael White on Nov 18, 2011 6:20 PM PST up reply actions
I agree, but you’ve got two top 10 QBs and it’s late in the year. I figure that should get you a starting RB/top tier WR

He’d better contact that Australian League after all.

Maybe McCourt wants a new tv deal to get some up front money to make that big FA splash before he goes.

@dodgerthoughts: Dodgers add Antonini, Castellanos, Fife, Wall and Withrow to 40-man roster, outright Monasterios and Ely to Albuquerque.
interesting moves
didn’t see antonini coming and i didn’t think Fife would be worth adding
by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 7:24 PM PST up reply actions
don't even think I had Antonini in my preview post
probably b/c i always forget about the guys we get in trades. curious about Ethan Martin. i look forward to Baseball America’s Rule 5 preview to see who they think might get taken
by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 7:27 PM PST up reply actions
Martin (if he truly is eligible) seems like the perfect gamble to select. A reliever who might be able to contribute at the big league level now and can be stashed on a shitty team’s 25 man.
by Michael White on Nov 18, 2011 7:30 PM PST up reply actions
I agree
like i’ve said before i’m not 100% certain on Martin being eligible, but I was right about the other guys so I think he would be
by Brandon Lennox on Nov 18, 2011 7:31 PM PST up reply actions
This is crazy. The guy was a first round pick. I don’t see how he sneaks through the Rule 5 draft. It’s a no-brainer gamble for a team like Kansas City. And if there is a roster crunch you can just phantom DL the dude for a while. Then, after the season, you get to use his 3 option years.
by Michael White on Nov 18, 2011 7:34 PM PST up reply actions
I have to believe that there is a reason that he is not eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

that's why I want to see Baseball America's list
b/c I would assume he’d be on there if eligible.
there are very few high school guys who sign when they are 19 years old so there aren’t many comparison’s

Antonini is, literally, the shit.
We’ll be THRILLED in two years that we traded McDonald for Dotel because Antonini will have the better MLB career.

tweet: Dodgers remove John Ely and Carlos Monasterios from 40-man roster, outright both to triple-A.
so then
who is at risk of going in the Rule 5 draft?

by Tommy Blackjack on Nov 18, 2011 7:27 PM PST reply actions
I think the complete list would be
Ethan Martin, Kyle Russell, Tony Delmonico, Jon Michael Redding, Cole St. Clair, Nick Buss, Jordan Roberts, Austin Gallagher, Andres Santiago, Chris Jacobs, Griff Erickson, Justin Miller, Tim Sexton, Jaime Pedroza, Matt Wallach, Pedro Baez, Geison Aguasviva, Rafael Ynoa, Carlos Frias, Bladimir Franco, Ramon Jean, Jose Dominguez, Daniel Tamares, Charlie Mirabal, Pedro Guerrero, Elian Herrera, Josh Walter, Steve Smith, Joseph Becker, Robert Booth

would hate to lose
Martin
Russell
St. Clair
Griff

If E Martin is indeed not eligible, I’d hazard a wild guess that Cole St. Clair is the most likely to be lost. A LOOGY with more than one year AA experience could be of some use to other teams. Houston drafted Wesley Wright, who fit that profile, away from LA.
