Silver & Gold: Matt Kemp Wins Silver Slugger Award

Matt Kemp is collecting awards by the bushel this offseason.

The Matt Kemp trophy case continues to grow, as the center fielder and National League MVP candidate was awarded on Wednesday with his second career Silver Slugger Award. Much like the Gold Glove Awards, the Silver Slugger is voted upon by managers and coaches, with the caveat that one can't vote for a player on their own team.

This is the second Silver Slugger for Kemp, who also earned a commemorative silver bat in 2009. Just like two seasons ago, Kemp won a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in the same year, joining Dusty Baker (1981) and Russell Martin (2007) as the only Dodgers to do so.

Kemp has had quite the offseason:

  • Baseball America MLB Player of the Year
  • National League Hank Aaron Award
  • Sporting News National League All-Star
  • National League Gold Glove Award
  • National League Silver Slugger

Up next for Kemp is The National League Outstanding Player in The Players Choice Awards, to be announced on Thursday night. Kemp is a finalist along with Ryan Braun and Justin Upton.

The big prize is NL MVP, which will be announced by the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday, November 22.

So if MLB PreApproves

Bill Shaikin tweeted that there will be no minimum price for the Dodgers, but potential buyers will be approved by MLB before bidding starts. So, in effect, MLB will have final pre-say in WHO can potentially own the Dodgers. It’s not just a highest bidder take all but a pre-approved by MLB winner take all. Right?

by RawhideBlue on Nov 2, 2011 3:41 PM PDT reply actions

From what I’ve heard so far, that sounds about right. MLB will pre-approve the bidders, then highest bid wins. I assume the winner would still have to meet certain other requirements, such as % leveraged.

by David Young on Nov 2, 2011 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Also: MLB is probably lying when they say there is no minimum price for the Dodgers. Frank and MLB had an agreement. MLB had to give something up — that is the definition of an agreement — and the thing they gave up is probably money.

Fangraph Column on team odds:

In the same fangraph column , this comment:

Bodog also posted odds of a particular player signing with a particular team.
Who will sign Albert Pujols to his next contract?
Chicago Cubs 7/4
St. Louis Cardinals 2/1
Los Angeles Angels 9/2
Washington Nationals 7/1
New York Yankees 12/1
Boston Red Sox 12/1
Los Angeles Dodgers 12/1
San Francisco Giants 12/1
Texas Rangers 15/1
Toronto Blue Jays 30/1
.
Too bad the Jays can’t put 25mil on Pujols signing with them, then give him 50mil/yr.

Dodgers are 30 – 1 to win it all. I like the Rays at 18 – 1.

Seems easy enough to whittle down.

Lee or Gould or EO

Baldwin or Pederson

No way is Withrow really in the running for number two.

Pederson has to be the choice over the contactless Baldwin
Lee seems to be the scouts choice over Gould but Gould has the better stats.
EO was still quite young for his league and did dominate. Problem is, we have seen Eovaldi and I’d have to hope that Lee is better.

Webster
Lee
Eovaldi
Gould
Pedeson
Baldwin
Withrow

Off the top of my head.

Trade RHP Michael Pineda, RHP Brandon League, OF Greg Halman, 3B Chone Figgins (with Seattle absorbing $16 of remaining $17 million on Figgins’ contract), and SS Carlos Triunfel to Cincinnati for 1B Joey Votto and C Yasmani Grandal.

My guess, and only my guess, is not likely.

(Though so many things depend on what the actual budget is for free agency, who else they’re eying, etc…) But right now they are already a bit shorthanded on starting pitching going into next year. Hopefully they can re-sign Kuroda for one more year. Buut that would give them Kershaw, Kuroda, Bills, Lilly and (?). Removing Bills from that equation, with Kuroda not sure he’s coming back for another, is very risky. Or, what Eric said, they’ll listen, but…

I don’t think the Dodgers would consider any offers for Billingsley until they find out whether Kuroda will sign for next year.

If Kuroda signs soon…they have more flexibility with pitching. But it’s not like the Dodgers have a surplus of reliable starters. They would need a low cost young player in a trade, and could use the money saved on Billingsley’s salary to sign a free agent starter.

Yep

Also, a lot of other people forget this but a painful wrinkle that changed Dodgers 2012 plans was Rubby De La Rosa needing TJ surgery this season. He was looking good and like a good shot at rotation next year. It happened earlier enough this year where maybe he makes a Strasburg like return in September but can’t count on anything. Which was a bummer and also makes Bills less tradeable.

some tidbits

From Shakin

By agreeing to sell the team, McCourt extracted two significant concessions from MLB. The league agreed to let McCourt’s chosen investment bank conduct the auction, subject to Bankruptcy Court approval, and to preapprove any bidders, according to a person familiar with the settlement but not authorized to discuss its details.

The league did not guarantee McCourt a minimum sale price, the person said. Nor did the league surrender any of its approval rights. However, the process enables McCourt to get as much money as possible, as fast as possible.

In a typical sale, the league conducts a preliminary examination of prospective bidders before allowing them to review a team’s confidential financial data. Once a sale agreement is reached, the league then conducts a more exhaustive investigation of the proposed buyer, followed by a vote of the owners.

In this case, the approval process would be completed in advance for each party that qualifies to participate in the auction, so that the winning bidder can conclude the purchase promptly, according to the person familiar with the settlement.
