2012 TBLA #7 Dodger Prospect Discussion

Chris Withrow, from his time with the Inland Empire 66ers

A late push helped Chris Withrow win the #6 TBLA Prospect vote, as he edged out both Joc Pederson and Shawn Tolleson.  Withrow, who was recently added to the Dodgers 40 man roster, will likely return to AA for a 3rd season in 2012 and will continue to work on his command.

I'm adding a few names to the list this time around even though it's probably a little early for a few of them.  Also, in case you missed the comments in the last discussion, we are now excluding players who have exhausted their rookie status heading into 2012, so we will not be considering Javy Guerra or Josh Lindblom for our prospect list.

Since we are heading into the Thanksgiving weekend, the plan is to let this vote run all the way until Monday morning.  If one player is the clear winner I may cut it short and move on, but we'll see.  Use this Fanpost for your voting.

Here are the candidates for the Dodgers #7 prospect:

Joc Pederson - OF (19.5 years old) - Pederson's name was scattered all over the Pioneer League Leaderboard after a big offensive season that saw him hit .353 with 11 homers, 24 SB's, and a .997 OPS.  As I mentioned last year he has 5-tool potential, although none of his 5 tools seem to have a particularly high ceiling.  Scouts don't think he'll be able to handle center field in the big leagues, but believe he can play either corner outfield spot.

James Baldwin - OF (20 years old) - Baldwin started the 2011 season on fire, and while he cooled down as the year progressed he still finished with 10 homers, 22 stolen bases, and a .828 OPS.  Many people call him the most exciting prospect since Matt Kemp, although Baldwin struggles with strikeouts much more than Kemp did.  He should have no trouble handling center field as he moves up through the minors.

Alfredo Silverio - OF (24.5 years old) - Signed way back in 2003, Silverio finally figured out how to make good use of the athleticism that scouts have seen in him for years.  This past season the outfielder led the Southern League in total bases, and hit .306 with 16 homers and a .883 OPS.  He also showed good speed with a minor league high 18 triples, but was caught in 12 of his 23 SB attempts.  While he spent most of the 2011 in center field, it remains to be seen if he'll be able to handle that position at the big league level.

Angelo Songco - 1B (23 years old) - Songco had a monster season for the Quakes in 2011, leading the California League in doubles and total bases while hitting .313 with 29 homers and 114 RBI's.  He's always had a ton of raw power, and it finally showed this past year.  He made the switch from left field to 1st base during the season, but overall doesn't have much defensive value so he's going to have to continue to hit as he moves up through the system.

Jonathan Garcia - OF (20 years old) - Garcia got off to a hot start in 2011 and showed good power throughout the season with 19 homers, but he ended the year in a major slump and hit just .228 for the season.  He was one of the youngest players in the Midwest League, however, and has plenty of time to improve and mature.  On defense Garcia has a strong arm and should be able to handle right field as he moves up through the system.

Shawn Tolleson - RHP (23.75 years old) - Tolleson flew through the minor leagues in 2011, advancing from LoA to AA and dominating everywhere he went.  His combined stats were ridiculous as he had a 1.17 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, a 1.59 FIP, and a 13.7 K/9 over 69 innings.  His cutter is by far his best pitch, which by most accounts is nearly unhittable for lower level minor leaguers.  He also mixes in a solid fastball, which apparently hit 97 mph last season on a good night, and a slider.

Angel Sanchez - RHP (22 years old) - Sanchez literally came out of nowhere in 2011 and had a very good season for the Great Lakes Loons.  Signed out of the Dominican Republic, he jumped straight to the Midwest League and had a 2.82 ERA, a 3.46 FIP, a 7.6 K/9, and a .198 batting average against.  He throws a hard fastball that can reach 97 mph, and he also has a curveball and changeup.

Alex Castellanos - OF (25.25 years old) - Castellanos made a great impression on Dodger prospect fans after joining the team in the Furcal trade as he posted a 1.009 OPS in his 32 games with the Lookouts, connecting on 4 homers, driving in 23 runs, and walking almost as much as he struck out.  There has been talk about converting him to either 2nd base or 1st base since the Dodger have a crowded minor league outfield, so it will be interesting to see where he plays next season.  He's listed at 5'11" and despite good home run numbers in 2011, he doesn't necessarily project as a true power threat at the big league level.

Griff Erickson - C (23.5 years old) - The switch hitting catcher had a breakout season in 2011, posting a combined .866 OPS between HiA and AA and smacking 13 homers.  He also posted an impressive strikeout to walk ratio, and showed strong defensive skills behind the plate.  Erickson is still at least a year away from the big leagues, but he's just 23 years old so he's in a good spot.

Scott Van Slyke - OF/1B (25.25 years old) - Van Slyke had the biggest season of his 7 year minor league career in 2011 while playing with the Lookouts.  He led the team in every significant offensive category except for runs and stolen bases, and even won the league batting title with a .348 average.  His SLG %, OB%, and OPS all ranked 2nd in the league, and his big season earned him a spot on the Dodgers 40 man roster.  He doesn't have much defensive value, so he'll have to continue hitting to make it to the show.

Tim Federowicz - C (24.25 years old) - In his short time with the Dodgers FedEx has impressed with an outstanding display in AAA, but it should be noted that his 1.058 OPS and .325 average while with the Isotopes were significantly higher than his minor league averages.  That being said Federowicz does have a decent bat, and since he is an excellent defensive catcher any offensive production we get out of him at the big league level would be a bonus.

Garcia, Pederson and Baldwin remain such interesting guys

I just have a hard time feeling confident in any of them right now for some reason…

I like having two very intriguing prospects at catcher now, too, when the cupboard looked bare there a year or so ago, but think it too early for either of them on the list.

agreed on the catcher situation. What I wouldn’t give for a Ned trade for a 3b prospect.
Seems like we have the pitching prospects to get that deal done.

by megaballs on Nov 23, 2011 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

I ful expect that to happen, and I fully expect it to be for a prospect we don’t really all that much care for.

by G.Scott on Nov 23, 2011 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

After Uribe, the depth chart at 3B looks mighty thin. The backup IFs on the 40-man currently are Sellers, Mitchell and DeJesus. You know Ned will be hunting for a vet (the return of the gnome?) to be on that bench. He does not want to have to hire a Shea Hillenbrand mid-season again.

Thought this was worth sharing…

As part of their divorce settlement, Dodger owner Frank McCourt has to pay his ex-wife Jamie $131 million. Through force of habit, the Yankees offered her $175 million.

yeah. Theres also no guarantee the Packers even make the super bowl. How often does the number one seed actually make the super bowl from either league?

Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride

by nolander on Nov 23, 2011 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

Point taken.

Packers are going to the Super Bowl tho. Nobody is beating them in Lambeau. I guess on a neutral field it’s more of a toss-up.

by silverwidow on Nov 23, 2011 9:25 AM PST up reply actions

One number one seed made the Super Bowl every year from 1997-2007 (the season; not the year the Super Bowl was played), and both number ones made it in 2009. In 2008 and 2010, neither number one seed made it.

I do appreciate how you jumped ahead right to the Super Bowl though.

by Eric Stephen on Nov 23, 2011 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

According to Colin Cowherd (the all knowing genius...)

The Bears are the best team in football, and will beat the Packers, and he says this without Cutler, too. With Cutler they were great, but without them they are all run, which you can only get away with for so long. Along those lines, I expect the 49ers to lose about 2-3 more games before the year is over.

We'll see

good D and a good running game can do a lot to hide the deficiencies of a QB. If I’m being honest Schuab wasn’t at his best for the majority of the beginning of the season(though he seemed to be getting into a groove until fat albert ended his season).

I’m with you on Schaub being pretty average this year. Not having Andre Johnson for an extended period of time will make you not as swesoke.

I really think that Leinart is terrible though. Like really freakin bad. I’m not wishing bad shit on the Texans, but I think you guys are fucked. The Texans would be my favorite team in the NFL if I didn’t like my favorite.

by keithc13 on Nov 23, 2011 9:48 AM PST up reply actions

His numbers with AZ are not THAT bad

we’ll see. As for Schuab, honestly it had very little to do with AJ. He has been bizarro schuab, his hallmark has always been his accuracy, but this year a lot of short passes have just been off from him, and this was even before AJ went down. Oddly enough his deep ball, which has usually been a bit of a weakness for him, was better. He seemed to have ironed it out though.

Sounds like it's Guerrero

From Guerrero’s weekly blog, on Tuesday:

There have been rampant rumors out there recently that our football team might be sporting a special look when they take the field for the USC game on Saturday evening. I can confirm that those rumors are indeed true. We will be unveiling a uniform that we have been working on with the adidas design team for several months. These new uniforms will provide us with an alternative to our existing road uniforms but will not replace them in perpetuity.

Neuheisel yesterday:

“No one’s told me anything,” he said. “We’re blue and gold as far as I know. I’ve heard the rumor, but I have no indication of that. … I love the home uniforms. I think it’s one of the classic games in college football.”

by Eric Stephen on Nov 23, 2011 10:45 AM PST up reply actions

It was in the works since early this year

Does the coach play a part of when it is used, sure but it is mostly an Adidas thing.

I posted this last night, but a new post was put up right after I posted it

I was looking at the voting results for the NL MVP, and I noticed that the people who finished 1-8 all had the most amount of votes in the same exact order they finished. Ie, Braun had the most 1st place votes, and Kemp had the most 2nd place votes, and Fielder had the most 3rd place votes etc, all the way til 8th. I was just wondering if this is a common occurrence, or was this rare? Thanks guys.

4+1=awesome

by grizzlyadams on Nov 23, 2011 12:04 PM PST via mobile reply actions

BBWAA has the full voting results for all the awards dating back to 2003 (Baseball-Reference has all prior to that – 1988 NL MVP voting, for instance – but only show first place votes and points so you have to reverse engineer the vote breakdown, which can be unwieldy in MVP awards; much easier for 3-ballot Cy Young Awards)

Last year for NL MVP, it broke down the way you describe through fourth place.
For the 2009 NL MVP, it only worked for the top two.

Don’t have any…..damn

but looking at that hand, the guy with 4 aces had to be scared of the royal at the end

He probably slow played the Aces, KJ suited said what the heck I am in the for the flop, caught some early outs to a straight and then hung around long enough to clean aces out

Aces done messed up

by Hollywood Joe on Nov 23, 2011 12:20 PM PST up reply actions

but at least he earned the lifelong moniker “Aces”

by Eric Stephen on Nov 23, 2011 12:23 PM PST up reply actions

Did the guy with pocket aces

try to slow play them? I am wondering what bet he made either before the flop or after the flop that would kept the other guy in the game.

On the turn, the other guy has a straight with a chance for a flush. Trip Aces had 8 outs for a full house (3 queens, 2 nines and 3 tens), so he had about a 6-1 shot to pull a full house. There were two cards that would hurt him, the Ace or Nine of diamonds since that would give him a full house or four of kind while the other player got a straight flush.

by bhsportsguy on Nov 23, 2011 12:37 PM PST up reply actions

If the guy with A-A makes a big raise on the flop, he doesn’t lose this pot.

On the turn, though, then K-J has its straight, and a straight-flush draw. If A-A goes all-in there, he’s only hoping to push K-J off a draw, I’d think.

Slow-playing is dangerous.

by fbihop on Nov 23, 2011 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

Apparently

The hand played out this way.

KJ calls blind, AA makes a standard raise (I would guess a pot sized raise) and KJ calls

After the flop AA checks, KJ checks

Turn AA bets out, KJ draws

This is what happened on the River

by bhsportsguy on Nov 23, 2011 12:53 PM PST up reply actions

Yep there it is. You can’t let the KJ see the turn for free. That is the A-A fault

by Hollywood Joe on Nov 23, 2011 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

Not with that flop you shouldn’t be. You have to know the other guy is most likely going in with 2 face cards. Once the turn hits he should have known he was screwed.

by VegasBlues on Nov 23, 2011 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

Pocket aces are the worst hand bad players can get. They get blinded by the aces and don’t see everything else playing out in front of them.

Slow playing the pocket cards is a fine move here. Hell, checking the flop is okay, but if you are going to do it you better be prepared to walk away on the turn. If you are going to bet the turn there then you better bet a real large amount because the only way he’s calling (even a smaller bet) is if he caught his straight.

Try srirachi w/eggs. I go w/mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, bell peppers & spinach, saute, then add egg whites. When they’re almost done add the sriarichi and turn so it gets a little charred (i do it on both sides because I like heat). The char gives it a bit of a sweet flavor. Awesome.

Roy Oswalt

Do the Dodgers take a look?

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 5:56 PM PST reply actions

Going to be 35 next year.
Probably done but if he came cheap i’d take him.

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

If cheap is around 7-8 million, that would be okay

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 23, 2011 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

Kuroda 1yr/12 vs Oswalt 2yrs/18???

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

how much would his old Japanese club pay?

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 23, 2011 6:02 PM PST up reply actions

Comparatively peanuts.

- The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Nov 23, 2011 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

Bruce Chen just got 2/10. I don’t see how Roy Oswalt doesn’t get at least twice the annual rate.

- The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Nov 23, 2011 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

Teams might be scared off of Oswalt’s injury plagued 2011 though.
I think he’s probably going to get paid though since he’s the best pitcher on the market (outside of Kuroda).

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 6:05 PM PST up reply actions

this is just me

but I much rather have mark buehrle

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 23, 2011 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

If they just want an innings eater…sure.

Buehrle’s thrown >200ip for 11 seasons in a row.
But talent wise…he reminds me of Lilly but without the strikeouts.

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 6:09 PM PST up reply actions

I would take Jackson too

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 23, 2011 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

I’d prefer EJ too.
I think his upside is way higher

by Joey Joe on Nov 23, 2011 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

2005 – 2009 – 6.9

Maybe it is 2010 that is the outlier and 6.0 last year is just reflective of the injury problems. Maybe it all boils down what his shoulder looks like.
