2012 TBLA #9 Dodger Prospect Discussion
Shawn Tolleson had more than double the votes of any other candidate, and therefore is award the title of TBLA #8 prospect. Tolleson had some strong opposition, but the "relief pitcher prospect haters" were unable to find a singular player to get behind and ended up splitting their votes. At the end of the day the support for Tolleson simply outweighed the haters.
I'm not going to repeat all the scouting reports for all the candidates as you can simply look at the post below to see all the eligible players. In fact the only reason I'm making new post here instead of updating the old one is because we need a comment refresher.
For the #10 vote I'll add a few more names, but for now I think we have enough options.
Please use this post as the discussion thread, and cast your actual vote in this Fanpost.

All I want to know is does Baldwin take as much time walking to the plate as his old man did walking off the mound at the end of the inning? ‘Cause I’d vote for that.

In a perfect world Shane Tolleson will be not required in 2012 to be anything more then the first option in a 10 – 2 game.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
This is a Jim/James Loney situation
Shane is the shitty version

The voting is getting to a point where I’m not sure if I should vote for the guy I want to vote for, or just wait and vote for one side of a majority between two options.
JMO – always vote for who you want, not for who might win, or in a year from now when you decided to go with the majority and the majority was wrong, you wont be saying damn it, I knew I should have voted for Garcia.

If FedEx is our 9th best best prospect, that makes me sad
He was like the 25th best in the RS org and their system isn’t all that better then ours
In that case, it sounds like it is/was a lot better than ours
by Michael White on Nov 28, 2011 2:56 PM PST up reply actions
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If Fed had been in the Dodgers system the last couple years as opposed to being acquired in a trade, no one would be talking about him (at least in the top 10).
You are saying that the guy who was promoted in Sept if he came up through our chain, would not be getting any support?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
You mean 27 year old AJ Ellis who was not even a starting catcher in the minors until he was 26?
You all know Fed is only 24.

@maddzgoesrawr @arenafitness
You can find a maybe decent reliever among a group of low-cost NRIs, e.g., MacDougal. You apparently pay $1M for Matt Treanor, $1.8M for Jose Molina and $1M in last year’s dollars for Dioner Navarro. (Of course Dioner was worth it for the splashdown HR off Lincecum alone.) If Federovicz can be a half-time starter at C, that’s worth something.

On the other hand you could sign JR Towles or something to an NRI and he’d at least be as good as Dioner.

True/false: In theory, if you have ML level ability and are a position player, the fastest way to the majors would be to learn to catch?
If true, why don’t we see more good all around catchers?
by Tim Crews' Dastardly Mustache on Nov 28, 2011 3:18 PM PST up reply actions
it is incredibly fucking hard at the major league level
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yes, yes and yes, it’s hard. But you could move positions if it didn’t work out. I’m just curious as to why there seems to be such a lack of quality catching where retreads make good money. Or is it just old timey baseball groupthink where you need veterans behind the plate unless they hit a ton?

@maddzgoesrawr @arenafitness
Not True
Fed is very good defensive player at a premium defensive position who hit .325/.431/.627 in Triple A at an age appropriate 23. It is only because the Triple A team was ABQ and it was only 102 plate appearances that I push Fed to the BACK half of the Top 10.
by CanuckDodger on Nov 28, 2011 3:15 PM PST up reply actions
But he didn’t really hit in AA in a lot more plate appearances. Griff outhit him, even while scouts say he can’t hit.
And Some Players...
hit well in Doublee A and can’t hit in Triple A, even in ABQ. I prefer it be the other way around. Also, we have no way of knowing if the Dodgers batting coaches fixed a mechanical problem with his swing or changed his batting stance when they got their hands on him. Whatever the case, Fed sure seemed to do better hitting in ABQ than Trayvon Robinson did, at the same age, and nobody had a problem with calling Trayvon a Top 10 prospect in our system.
by CanuckDodger on Nov 28, 2011 3:22 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t really look at those 100 ABs in ABQ as that reliable of info. Any pitcher worth a damn was in the bigs or on the DL by that point in the year. He was likely facing tougher pitching in AA. Hell Trayvon was in the bigs by the team they put FedEx in AAA.
Maybe the Dodgers staff did do something though, that would be awesome.
Trayvon was coming off his 2010 AA season when we did prospect lists one year ago.

I Meant During The 2011 Season, Prior To The Trade

Yeah I know
It’s like to a lesser extent when Kemp, Ethier, Martin, Bills, Loney, Kuo all came up. If for some reason none of these guys were up long enough, I think it would be one hell of a farm system right now having Sands, Rubby, Jansen, and Gordon still prospects. Or at least top 15, closer to top 10, rather than 20-25 or so.

i realize I didn’t specifically mention it in that oncomment, even though I said it in an earlier comment, and the question is really if Andrew McCutchen is elite or simply very good, but his defensive value has to be taken into account. I’m not sure there is a good way to do that, but it has to be done. 111 seasons over 3 years (and 3 of those are his) means he’s in the top 37 seasons every year, which means he’d be the best player on a lot of teams, not just the Pirates.

Jose Molina signing
According to MLB Trade Rumors-Molina is signing for 1.8 million with the Rays. Realize Molina might have wanted to sign with the Marlins, but wonder for 1 million more if he might not have been a better fit for the Dodgers. Especially in light of his improved offense last year.
Was the catcher they traded a complete hack defensively?

There’s some problems with the way they normalize for pitchers which makes me doubt it but if it’s right Molina’s framing ability alone is worth 3.5 wins.

Jose Molina was just given money by the Rays because of his defensive skills. What player has the best defensive skills in our system? What player could be worth 20 – 30 runs a season simply based on his framing skills? What player has a nick name ready to go?

Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant

So, against right handed pitching we could see a line up like this:
Dee (6)
Jim Loney(3)
Kemp (8)
’Dre (9)
Uribe (5)/Rivera (7)/Sands(7)
Ellis (2)
Rivera (7)/Uribe(5)/Sands(7)
Ellis (4)
Let’s pray it is Jim Loney who shows up, and that Uribe surprises all with a “monster” comeback season (.270/.330/.450). If the Ellis boys hold their own, and Eithier gets back to form, the team could score some runs. Which will be needed, considering the big hole in the rotation (Kuroda).
SO if we are rooting for Jim Loney to show up, how about a few prayers for the arrival of...
Johnny Uribe.

On the grounds that he just didn’t produce enough offense (not specifically HRs…just offense in general)….i feel like he’ll manage to get his OPS up to about .850. Considering his 1.000+ OPS post-swing adjustment, I’d think that’s completely reachable.

Or maybe I’m just making a wild stab at it and don’t know what I’m talking about.

Pretty sweet breakfast
Heated the gorganzolla cornbread stuffing up in a pan, pressed it together to make a little cake, got the pan hot so I got a nice crust on both sides
in separate pan fried two eggs over very easy
placed eggs on top of “stuffing cake,” poured Cholula liberally atop
in the words of Nolander
NOM NOM NOM
I just had a breakfast burrito from Lotaburger. Delicious. Two eggs, hashbrowns, cheese and green chile.
I love the breakfast burrito in its many forms

I read a blurb last week Yadier Alonso Reds 1b/LF could be had…being he’s a butcher in the field but a beast at bat….1b only and has someone named Votto blocking him…in my daydreams Alonso comes and Loney goes…
Too many Yadiers

It's what you're doin' when you're doin' what you look like you're doin'!
That’s because his name is Yonder.
I asked my buddy from Cincinnatti what he thought it’d take to move him. He said, “Uhh, we’ll take Matt Kemp”.
This just in, everyone overrates their own prospects.
When Cincy tires of him
the headline writes itself. Reds Over Yonder

he’s from Cincy but lives here and has heard me talk about Dodgers prospects since May. he at least knows names, and saw Dee, Sands, Eovaldi play.
Yonder had a Sept like Sands had a Sept. Haven’t seen anything in Yonder’s pedigree that suggests he’ll be any better then Jerry Sands. He’s hit 36 minor league home runs in four seasons. His career minor league OPS is .836.
His outstanding major league Sept is inflating his value with his .387 BABIP.

I said the new CBA was going to be hard slotting yesterday, this wasn’t exactly right. New rule is:
The most significant new detail: If a team fails to sign a player in the first 10 rounds, its draft cap is reduced by the assigned value of his pick. It can’t reallocate that value to sign other players. However, it can reallocate the difference between a player’s bonus and the value of his choice.
So if you give a guy money under his slot, you can use that money later. If you fail to sign the player at all, you can’t reallocate the funds.
Please Scott Boras find us a loophole.

Texans/Falcons
Great freaking game this week. nola, would you feel confident using Houston’s D in this tough matchup?
why wouldn't I?
I can’t be skeptical anymore, they are 2nd in the league in sacks, and in the top 5 when it comes to points scored and #1 in yardage allowed. Although the power running style of the Falcons could give us some trouble.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
Thanks
I thought about using the Jets (vs. Redskins), but fuck it, Houston is too awesome.

I’d play Jets D… Rotoworld has Jets D 4th, Texans D 20th
by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 10:16 AM PST up reply actions
Because of the matchups, there is just a better chance of Jets D doing better vs Redskins then Texans shutting down Falcons.

I like looking at the pt predictions plus the rankings plus the "experts" rankings for each week
and then combining that with gut instinct, tea leaves and seers from Minority Report.

Jansen is at one year, 73 days of service time. The Super Twos are now the top 22% of service time of players between two and three years of service time, up from 17%. There will be something like 5 players, maybe 10, added to the Super Two crop each year.

Fantasy posts are boring, but here I go anyway
This year my FF team is completely re-writing the rules on how to win at FF
My RBs are ranked 13, 19, 22, 24, and 26th – in terms of points scored this year. Choosing two every week is like the lottery
yet, I am still the points leader in the league with a 10 and 2 record
ugh
I remember going like 1-5 one year, while somehow being in he top 3 of points scored or something like that. It was terrible

Its all luck, they say those things will usually even out, but sometimes you do miss the playoffs when you shouldnt… its all about luck… I agree, just get in the playoffs is your only goal, after that, hope for the best.
