2012 TBLA #9 Dodger Prospect Discussion

Will Shawn Tolleson be the next Kenley Jansen, the next Blake Hawksworth, or none of the above?

Shawn Tolleson had more than double the votes of any other candidate, and therefore is award the title of TBLA #8 prospect.  Tolleson had some strong opposition, but the "relief pitcher prospect haters" were unable to find a singular player to get behind and ended up splitting their votes.  At the end of the day the support for Tolleson simply outweighed the haters.

I'm not going to repeat all the scouting reports for all the candidates as you can simply look at the post below to see all the eligible players.  In fact the only reason I'm making new post here instead of updating the old one is because we need a comment refresher.

For the #10 vote I'll add a few more names, but for now I think we have enough options.

Please use this post as the discussion thread, and cast your actual vote in this Fanpost

In a perfect world Shane Tolleson will be not required in 2012 to be anything more then the first option in a 10 – 2 game.

The voting is getting to a point where I’m not sure if I should vote for the guy I want to vote for, or just wait and vote for one side of a majority between two options.

JMO – always vote for who you want, not for who might win, or in a year from now when you decided to go with the majority and the majority was wrong, you wont be saying damn it, I knew I should have voted for Garcia.

If FedEx is our 9th best best prospect, that makes me sad

He was like the 25th best in the RS org and their system isn’t all that better then ours

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 28, 2011 2:54 PM PST reply actions

In that case, it sounds like it is/was a lot better than ours

by Michael White on Nov 28, 2011 2:56 PM PST up reply actions

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If Fed had been in the Dodgers system the last couple years as opposed to being acquired in a trade, no one would be talking about him (at least in the top 10).

You can find a maybe decent reliever among a group of low-cost NRIs, e.g., MacDougal. You apparently pay $1M for Matt Treanor, $1.8M for Jose Molina and $1M in last year’s dollars for Dioner Navarro. (Of course Dioner was worth it for the splashdown HR off Lincecum alone.) If Federovicz can be a half-time starter at C, that’s worth something.

On the other hand you could sign JR Towles or something to an NRI and he’d at least be as good as Dioner.

True/false: In theory, if you have ML level ability and are a position player, the fastest way to the majors would be to learn to catch?

Yes, yes and yes, it’s hard. But you could move positions if it didn’t work out. I’m just curious as to why there seems to be such a lack of quality catching where retreads make good money. Or is it just old timey baseball groupthink where you need veterans behind the plate unless they hit a ton?

@maddzgoesrawr @arenafitness

by Maddz on Nov 28, 2011 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

Not True

Fed is very good defensive player at a premium defensive position who hit .325/.431/.627 in Triple A at an age appropriate 23. It is only because the Triple A team was ABQ and it was only 102 plate appearances that I push Fed to the BACK half of the Top 10.

by CanuckDodger on Nov 28, 2011 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

But he didn’t really hit in AA in a lot more plate appearances. Griff outhit him, even while scouts say he can’t hit.

by BFDC on Nov 28, 2011 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

He was basically a .260 hitter before he got to New Mexico

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 28, 2011 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

Right. If he hits .260/.320/.380 in the big leagues I will shut up and never say another bad thing about him.

by BFDC on Nov 28, 2011 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

And Some Players...

hit well in Doublee A and can’t hit in Triple A, even in ABQ. I prefer it be the other way around. Also, we have no way of knowing if the Dodgers batting coaches fixed a mechanical problem with his swing or changed his batting stance when they got their hands on him. Whatever the case, Fed sure seemed to do better hitting in ABQ than Trayvon Robinson did, at the same age, and nobody had a problem with calling Trayvon a Top 10 prospect in our system.

by CanuckDodger on Nov 28, 2011 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

?

I thought the biggest knock on him was the power spike/high Ks in triple A?

by NotJoeTorre on Nov 28, 2011 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t really look at those 100 ABs in ABQ as that reliable of info. Any pitcher worth a damn was in the bigs or on the DL by that point in the year. He was likely facing tougher pitching in AA. Hell Trayvon was in the bigs by the team they put FedEx in AAA.

Maybe the Dodgers staff did do something though, that would be awesome.

by BFDC on Nov 28, 2011 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Trayvon was coming off his 2010 AA season when we did prospect lists one year ago.

I Meant During The 2011 Season, Prior To The Trade

It’s like to a lesser extent when Kemp, Ethier, Martin, Bills, Loney, Kuo all came up. If for some reason none of these guys were up long enough, I think it would be one hell of a farm system right now having Sands, Rubby, Jansen, and Gordon still prospects. Or at least top 15, closer to top 10, rather than 20-25 or so.

We are both the first person each one texts or calls if something interesting happens in their day, which is really cool to me. We’ve only known each other since the Super Bowl this year, but we’ve hung out so much it’s like we’ve known each other for years. One thing that gives me pause is if we did start dating, what happens if one of us fucks it up, and we wouldn’t want to be friends anymore.

A similar package to what they gave up with only one great prospect instead of two.

Maybe you can do a Zach Lee and Sands headlined package with a couple relief arms thrown in.

In looking at what the Rays did I came up with:
Zach Lee
Jake Lemmerman
Scott Van Slyke
Alex Castelannos

bearing in mind that the SS the Rays got who is now a top prospect was not in 2010 when the trade was made.

I think you are not taking into account the league. .914 OPS in the MidWest League for a guy who was 22. Hits right handers better then left handers. Not saying he’s better then any of them as he only has this season to hang on his mantle, but he sure seemed to figure things out as the season wore on. i realize I didn’t specifically mention it in that oncomment, even though I said it in an earlier comment, and the question is really if Andrew McCutchen is elite or simply very good, but his defensive value has to be taken into account. I’m not sure there is a good way to do that, but it has to be done. 111 seasons over 3 years (and 3 of those are his) means he’s in the top 37 seasons every year, which means he’d be the best player on a lot of teams, not just the Pirates.

Let’s pray it is Jim Loney who shows up, and that Uribe surprises all with a “monster” comeback season (.270/.330/.450). If the Ellis boys hold their own, and Eithier gets back to form, the team could score some runs. Which will be needed, considering the big hole in the rotation (Kuroda).

After driving the anti-Loney bus

On the grounds that he just didn’t produce enough offense (not specifically HRs…just offense in general)….i feel like he’ll manage to get his OPS up to about .850. Considering his 1.000+ OPS post-swing adjustment, I’d think that’s completely reachable.

And even when driving the Fielder bus, i was okay with getting to see if Loney will be for real

Yonder had a Sept like Sands had a Sept. Haven’t seen anything in Yonder’s pedigree that suggests he’ll be any better then Jerry Sands. He’s hit 36 minor league home runs in four seasons. His career minor league OPS is .836.

His outstanding major league Sept is inflating his value with his .387 BABIP.

I said the new CBA was going to be hard slotting yesterday, this wasn’t exactly right. New rule is:

The most significant new detail: If a team fails to sign a player in the first 10 rounds, its draft cap is reduced by the assigned value of his pick. It can’t reallocate that value to sign other players. However, it can reallocate the difference between a player’s bonus and the value of his choice.

So if you give a guy money under his slot, you can use that money later. If you fail to sign the player at all, you can’t reallocate the funds.

Please Scott Boras find us a loophole.

by silverwidow on Nov 29, 2011 10:07 AM PST reply actions

why wouldn't I?

I can’t be skeptical anymore, they are 2nd in the league in sacks, and in the top 5 when it comes to points scored and #1 in yardage allowed. Although the power running style of the Falcons could give us some trouble.

Fantasy posts are boring, but here I go anyway

This year my FF team is completely re-writing the rules on how to win at FF

My RBs are ranked 13, 19, 22, 24, and 26th – in terms of points scored this year. Choosing two every week is like the lottery

yet, I am still the points leader in the league with a 10 and 2 record

by Hollywood Joe on Nov 29, 2011 10:23 AM PST reply actions

I’ve been rotating RBs all year too. Right now, have LeGarrette Blount and DeMarco Murray.

Tied for second place right now, have won 5 games in a row.

Running backs with two capital letters in their first names are clearly the key to victory.
