Dodger Blogs Softball - Sign Up For The TBLA Team Today

SIGN UP HERE

Will the True Blue LA team look something like this?

The Dodger blog The Left Field Pavilion (The LFP) is coordinating a Dodger Blog Softball Tournament (this links to their tournament info page) to be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Big League Dreams in West Covina. (Check out the replica ballparks at their link!)

Some of you have already signed up, which is awesoke. The LFP has to put a reservation deposit on the field on December 1, so they'd like to have a rough idea of how many teams to plan for. And signing up is separate from paying the nominal $35 playing fee for the guarantee of at least three games, so you can do them at different times.

Don't forget to select True Blue LA as your primary team!

Besides signing up at the site, also let David know here that you have signed up and what preferred position you’d like to play. Also if you really intend on paying the $35 fee

No we are not rivals, I suspect he’s quite busy.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 29, 2011 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

True, he always talks about being busy. Seems like TV shows are his 1st love, before Dodgers and sports.

by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Variety pays him better than ESPN, I imagine.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on Nov 29, 2011 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

tv shows seem like his job. You rarely see him relate something that happened in a sitcom to his life, but he relates his life to the Dodgers all the time.

by G.Scott on Nov 29, 2011 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

It his job, but he does love it I believe. I think I asked him before and he said he has loved TV shows, even before Variety I believe. Maybe I got it wrong. And thats fine if he does, nothing wrong with that.

by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 8:59 AM PST up reply actions

I believe he was a TV writer at one time and his dream job would probably be writing the shows not writing about the shows. Or maybe his dream job would be to be TJ Simers but with class and skill. I’m not sure.

About 80% were only met in the past two years for me. BH, Eric, David, and Marty about 4-5 years from the DT days.
Michael a little longer because we went to some Clipper games before any TBLA meetups. BH probably sooner then anyone because we went to some Laker games before any DT meetups.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 29, 2011 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

Why did you guys branch away from DT? Did you guys just want to do your own thing? Thought you could do better?

by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

And how come Btimmerman hardly posts over here? He is staying loyal to DT? Love that guy Btimm!

by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

Not sure about those guys, but

The SBNation interface is much more amenable to comment conversations than the ESPN interface is.

Eric and I came to write which we could not do on DT. I think the others followed more for the format then anything else. A good % came just so they could say fuck.

True story, I read DT every day, refreshed it every 10 minutes when it sounded like manny was close to re-signing, butJon linked to articles writtn by Eric all the time, and at some point I just said “If he’s always inking to that guy’s sitemaybe I should just go there first”. It wasn’t a knock on Jon, just cutting out the middleman t those articles.

by G.Scott on Nov 29, 2011 8:59 AM PST up reply actions

chalk me up in the fuck column! haha… But also I came here for a few other reasons. I find your guys info to be more current, more about todays team going forward, where as Jon like to write alot about the past, past Dodger stuff, and I wasnt around for most of the glory past, and im sick of talking about 1988. But you guys talk mostly about todays team, and todays issues, and where this team is at going forward, I like that.

by uschris0304 on Nov 29, 2011 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

I mostly write about the past.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 29, 2011 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

The past is fine. I know alot of older fans love the past, because thats pretty much all we got right now. So nothing wrong with it at all, but sucks for me I wasnt around for the 70s and most of the 80s, so I missed out.

We were talking about this the other day and decided it was a managerial fail. At no point did your manager move your four best players from SS/3rd, Catcher, Pitcher to catch the ball in RF where we decided to hit every ball.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Nov 29, 2011 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah that was my bad. I set the lineup but just wanted the outfielders to catch what they could and knock down what they couldn’t.

Robot – Pitcher or Infield
HJ – Outfield
Xeifrank – SS
Billyum – Outfield
Gary – 3rd
David – Outfield
Jrock – Outfield
Josie – Catch
Maddz – 2nd
Bobby – ?
UCLA32 – ?
Brandon – ?
Phil – ?
Nolij – ?
Michael White – ?
Delias – ???
We easily have a team and I’m sure I’m still missing some names.

That can be fun and all, but chances are you won’t get any action at a few of them. When we are kicking ass we switch positions around, and I always hope to get to make a diving catch in the OF, but then I rarely get a ball hit to me

I wonder what happens if TBLA gets 50 sign ups. How do they choose which people to put on other teams?? I am worried I might end up playing for the blog “Sons of Davey Lopes Homeboys” :)

by Xeifrank on Nov 30, 2011 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

I sent Phil a roster update. TBLA has a full roster. I think I put you on the DT team since Jon is short of players. If TBLA gets enough to fill two teams. I can add a second team to the tournament. no big deal. I have some blogs that still have no one or one or two players. I’ll remove those and assign their players if they can’t fill a team. That’s why I ask for 1st and second choice. Any questions let me know.

by M.Brown on Nov 30, 2011 9:20 PM PST up reply actions

Does this go for me, too?

Can you send me a new roster update with everyone who wanted to be on the TBLA roster as their first choice. I’d rather poll them to find out which ones would not mind moving to Dodger Thoughts then having you arbitrarily move them.

I’d be more then happy to help Jon Weisman field a team if he wants a team, but if he does not I’d rather have two TBLA teams.

Also other then TBLA do any of the other blogs look like they will field a team? I just want to know how much effort we should put into this if it does not look like any chance for this tournament to take place. I guess the question is what is the total number of players who have signed up for all blogs.

I had 14 teams till the Dodgers PR team pulled out at the last minute. I’m going to try and put another team together by Tuesday. If I can’t get the players we will go with 13 unless you guys want to field two teams. I’ll waive the 2 female rule for the second team is you can get 5 more players in the next day or so. Let me know.

by M.Brown on Jan 30, 2012 1:14 AM PST up reply actions

After thinking last night. I’m going to go with 13 teams. If I split you guys now into two teams. That would be less money for the food bank and more for the park. They are already making a ton of this event and I’m trying to maximize the donation to those that really need it.

by M.Brown on Jan 30, 2012 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

Kind of cool that the Dodgers PR had a team and kind of sucks that they dropped out leaving us with 13. Wonder if they dropped out due to the sell of the team or just other obligations.

by mintxcore on Feb 3, 2012 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

The left side is just a key. Ignore its placement with regard to the rows. We are team #2. We play team #1, which is Dodger Bobble, at 8:00 A.M. in Tiger Stadium. That is the first row of the schedule part of the table.

We play Team 6 at 10:00 AM in Fenway (“2 v 6”)
We play Team 4 at Noon in Dodger Stadium (“2 v 4”)

What I don't understand are

the rules. Well, I understand most of them. What does “Home Runs – 3 and 1 up” mean? And what does “Box rule will be in effect …” mean?

by David Young on Feb 3, 2012 6:41 PM PST reply actions

I’m guessing three home runs over fence is the max per team, and the -1 means teams are allowed to hit one home run more than the opponent.

and I would imagine the schedule could take a bit of a hit if any games end up in ties and go to (extra innings) the international tie-breaking rule. I think it is great that there are no ties, but would’ve thought with a compressed schedule and 50 minute games that tie games would go in to the books that way and teams could get the equivalent of half a win in the standings.

is USSSA different from ASA? Because it’s clearly stated we’re using ASA rules.

by G.Scott on Feb 4, 2012 1:31 AM PST up reply actions

It’s USSSA I had thought it was ASA . When the park called to talk to me about my question of illegal bats.. He told me they follow USSSA.

by M.Brown on Feb 4, 2012 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

The venue itself hosts many USSSA events

But it’s up to the individual tournament organizer to set the ground rules. The inclusion of USSSA bats in a recreational tournament would be dangerous. I’ve been playing adult softball the past ten years, and I wouldn’t play infield under USSSA rules, especially with 60-foot bases and skin infields.

If USSSA bats are allowed at this tournament, I’d suggest those men braving the infield take the necessary precautions, for future generation’s sake.
