Dodger Blogs Softball - Sign Up For The TBLA Team Today
Will the True Blue LA team look something like this?
The Dodger blog The Left Field Pavilion (The LFP) is coordinating a Dodger Blog Softball Tournament (this links to their tournament info page) to be held on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Big League Dreams in West Covina. (Check out the replica ballparks at their link!)
Some of you have already signed up, which is awesoke. The LFP has to put a reservation deposit on the field on December 1, so they'd like to have a rough idea of how many teams to plan for. And signing up is separate from paying the nominal $35 playing fee for the guarantee of at least three games, so you can do them at different times.
Don't forget to select True Blue LA as your primary team!

Besides signing up at the site, also let David know here that you have signed up and what preferred position you’d like to play. Also if you really intend on paying the $35 fee
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It’s not a hard deadline. Sign ups can be later, but if you’re going to do it, why wait?

I only link to those that have the LFP on their blog roll. TBLA and both DT do not link to my site. even though I asked
We are just lazy not snobby when it comes to site maintenance.

Yup, I’m not sure which one is Michael White.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
dam, thats you Phil between Josie and Eric? You are not old at all… where did that come from anyways? So who is the one old dude in the middle then??
Well thank you Phil for the roll call…. So in general, how many years have the majority of you guys known eachother would you say?
No we are not rivals, I suspect he’s quite busy.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
True, he always talks about being busy. Seems like TV shows are his 1st love, before Dodgers and sports.
tv shows seem like his job. You rarely see him relate something that happened in a sitcom to his life, but he relates his life to the Dodgers all the time.
It his job, but he does love it I believe. I think I asked him before and he said he has loved TV shows, even before Variety I believe. Maybe I got it wrong. And thats fine if he does, nothing wrong with that.
About 80% were only met in the past two years for me. BH, Eric, David, and Marty about 4-5 years from the DT days.
Michael a little longer because we went to some Clipper games before any TBLA meetups. BH probably sooner then anyone because we went to some Laker games before any DT meetups.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Why did you guys branch away from DT? Did you guys just want to do your own thing? Thought you could do better?
Not sure about those guys, but
The SBNation interface is much more amenable to comment conversations than the ESPN interface is.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Eric and I came to write which we could not do on DT. I think the others followed more for the format then anything else. A good % came just so they could say fuck.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Better than coming just so they could… oh, never mind.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
True story, I read DT every day, refreshed it every 10 minutes when it sounded like manny was close to re-signing, butJon linked to articles writtn by Eric all the time, and at some point I just said “If he’s always inking to that guy’s sitemaybe I should just go there first”. It wasn’t a knock on Jon, just cutting out the middleman t those articles.
chalk me up in the fuck column! haha… But also I came here for a few other reasons. I find your guys info to be more current, more about todays team going forward, where as Jon like to write alot about the past, past Dodger stuff, and I wasnt around for most of the glory past, and im sick of talking about 1988. But you guys talk mostly about todays team, and todays issues, and where this team is at going forward, I like that.
Patti was the oldest at 58
By Age:
Patti
Phil
Marty
David
BH
HJ
Eric
GrimJack?
Delias
Robot Friend
Robot – though he may be under 30 and just played on our team to make it competitive.
Then a whole lot of 30 and unders
For those who don’t remember, that team above beat the 30 and unders while using a 58 year old lady at 1st base and Grimjack who due to a leg problem was unable to move.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It was both an impressive show by the Crotchety Crew, and a disappointing effort by the Young’ns. We needed a Miracle, not a Maricle.
We were talking about this the other day and decided it was a managerial fail. At no point did your manager move your four best players from SS/3rd, Catcher, Pitcher to catch the ball in RF where we decided to hit every ball.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think with Robot, Nolij, Phil, Billyum, David, Brandon, Maddz and myself we’re looking at a strong team. Where the hell is jrock?
I don’t know, it doesn’t really have a date on it does it? I haven’t looked that hard. Wondef this will end up being a TBLA vs The World Futures Game
Hmm - might be a way to leverage this
the team offering the best beer after the game can buy my services
by Hollywood Joe on Nov 29, 2011 11:27 AM PST up reply actions
If those who mentioned before that they were going to play, the TBLA team will be quite strong.
Robot – Pitcher or Infield
HJ – Outfield
Xeifrank – SS
Billyum – Outfield
Gary – 3rd
David – Outfield
Jrock – Outfield
Josie – Catch
Maddz – 2nd
Bobby – ?
UCLA32 – ?
Brandon – ?
Phil – ?
Nolij – ?
Michael White – ?
Delias – ???
We easily have a team and I’m sure I’m still missing some names.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yeah, that was just a quick rundown. A moderator has to be the manager since Eric is unavailable and I suspect that should be David who won’t rankle anyone like I would.

I definitely want to play
I just dont have the 35 bucks as of yet to sign up.
I will be a valuable outfielder (iffy on the valuable and questionable on the “outfielder” part, like that’s what you call what I do out there) for team TBLA! I will list no second team because I have no allegiance to any other blogs. Huzahh!
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
Just signed up
and I put TBLA first, Dodger Thoughts second.
I’m probably most useful at 3B, SS, or OF.
Should I pay right now?
Kevin L., are you going?
I’d wait on paying. For all we know we might be the only blog with a team.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I am in – play me anywhere but pitcher
if this is going down, I want to win
if we want to win, we should really pull a practice or two, will allow us to see what we are working with
I might
want to play a new position every inning (except P and C) for one of the games
I always wanted to do that and never have
by Hollywood Joe on Nov 29, 2011 9:37 AM PST up reply actions
That can be fun and all, but chances are you won’t get any action at a few of them. When we are kicking ass we switch positions around, and I always hope to get to make a diving catch in the OF, but then I rarely get a ball hit to me
play too deep and get bad jumps on the ball
by Hollywood Joe on Nov 29, 2011 1:27 PM PST up reply actions
I mean I can totally stand somewhere and occupy space
and I may even manage through dumb luck to put my glove in front of a ball, but I can’t guarantee anything.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
true story, you caught a fly ball in RCF in the first inning or so and I had to pull addz aside and ask who the hell you were
Yeah I was unsure of you, Nolander, and a few others
Plus I’m so awkward that I didn’t really ask anyone, just figured it out as the game went on, haha. The only person besides Cory I was talking to was Court and Josie, because I hung out with them at the AS-Game.

you should play – this is what we’ve been waiting for!
(although I didn’t make the cut for the TBLA team – I’m on Roberto’s team)
A roster update has been sent to Phil. I have 15 players listed. You guys need just one more female and you are set. Thanks and sorry for any difficulties signing up. The issue has now been fixed.
Does it have to be an actual girl?
Because I can testify that most of the sign-ups here throw and bat like one.
It's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
It's what you're doin' when you're doin' what you look like you're doin'!
Signed up TBLA/DT
Position of preference is SS. But can go a rung or two down the positional spectrum to 3B/2B if need be.
I wonder what happens if TBLA gets 50 sign ups. How do they choose which people to put on other teams?? I am worried I might end up playing for the blog “Sons of Davey Lopes Homeboys” :)
I sent Phil a roster update. TBLA has a full roster. I think I put you on the DT team since Jon is short of players. If TBLA gets enough to fill two teams. I can add a second team to the tournament. no big deal. I have some blogs that still have no one or one or two players. I’ll remove those and assign their players if they can’t fill a team. That’s why I ask for 1st and second choice. Any questions let me know.
Can you send me a new roster update with everyone who wanted to be on the TBLA roster as their first choice. I’d rather poll them to find out which ones would not mind moving to Dodger Thoughts then having you arbitrarily move them.
I’d be more then happy to help Jon Weisman field a team if he wants a team, but if he does not I’d rather have two TBLA teams.
Also other then TBLA do any of the other blogs look like they will field a team? I just want to know how much effort we should put into this if it does not look like any chance for this tournament to take place. I guess the question is what is the total number of players who have signed up for all blogs.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Jon said there’s still room on the DT team. If TBLA is full, you can let DT pick me up in the Rule 5 draft.
I would be happy to play for DT

I suggest that we shouldn't be concerned if the team gets big
Everyone bats, we rotate through the field. With three games minimum to play, there should be plenty of opportunity to play.

I see the True Blue L.A. team as WPIG and the Dodger Thoughts team as WKRP. With apologies to Xeifrank, of course.
That’s a classic. Do we have a Lonnie Anderson look alike on our team? Les Nesmen took an Andre Ethier route to win that game.
Heh. That’s one I hadn’t thought about in awhile.

GATE FEE
The LFP just informed me that the $3 gate fee will be in effect, but you get a $1-token to use toward concessions.
14 Teams
Gates open at 7AM, tourney starts at 8AM. But I don’t think they have seven fields, so different starting times for some teams.
babelfish translation choices
I’d take BP, but I don’t want to jack up my swing
A. I don’t want to embarrass myself.
B. I don’t want to pull a muscle.
C. They don’t allow bunting in the batting cages.
E.
D. My baseball swing isn’t great, but it’s okay, and I don’t want to flail at more floated nothings than is necessary
For me it is:
E. I only have so many swings left in this old body, so I can’t waste them on BP.

hmmm… thought I heard 14. Minty is in SB? Yeah could carpool I suppose, if he doesn’t mind waiting around for the Championship game to finish. :)
I had 14 teams till the Dodgers PR team pulled out at the last minute. I’m going to try and put another team together by Tuesday. If I can’t get the players we will go with 13 unless you guys want to field two teams. I’ll waive the 2 female rule for the second team is you can get 5 more players in the next day or so. Let me know.
From the LFP blog:
Would you like to meet Josh Macciello? Come on out to big League Dreams in West Covina on Saturday Feb 11 and you will have your chance. Josh will be paying for the LFP Facebook page team. The left side is just a key. Ignore its placement with regard to the rows. We are team #2. We play team #1, which is Dodger Bobble, at 8:00 A.M. in Tiger Stadium. That is the first row of the schedule part of the table.

im still confused
so we play team 3 when and at what time? and team 4 when and at what time?
and yeah, the rules are confusing too….
We play Team 6 at 10:00 AM in Fenway (“2 v 6”)
We play Team 4 at Noon in Dodger Stadium (“2 v 4”)
The top six teams then move on to the seeded portion of the tournament below.

BLD policy
I’m not sure if it’ll be the same for the softball tournament, but BLD typically does not allow coolers or outside drinks (except water).
Please pass the word along to your teams so there isn’t any confusion as sometimes our guests are not aware of our food and beverage policy
As a reminder there is no outside food or beverages allowed inside the park. The exception is bottled water.

what position are you playing? We should all be required to wear our blogging monicker on the back of our shirts. :)
What I don't understand are
the rules. Well, I understand most of them. What does “Home Runs – 3 and 1 up” mean? And what does “Box rule will be in effect …” mean?

and I would imagine the schedule could take a bit of a hit if any games end up in ties and go to (extra innings) the international tie-breaking rule. I think it is great that there are no ties, but would’ve thought with a compressed schedule and 50 minute games that tie games would go in to the books that way and teams could get the equivalent of half a win in the standings.
USSSA Softball Rules
http://www.usssa.com/usssa/usssa-general/2011SPRuleBook.pdf
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
is USSSA different from ASA? Because it’s clearly stated we’re using ASA rules.
You're not yet drunk if you can lay on the floor without holding on.
It’s USSSA I had thought it was ASA . When the park called to talk to me about my question of illegal bats.. He told me they follow USSSA.
The venue itself hosts many USSSA events
But it’s up to the individual tournament organizer to set the ground rules. The inclusion of USSSA bats in a recreational tournament would be dangerous. I’ve been playing adult softball the past ten years, and I wouldn’t play infield under USSSA rules, especially with 60-foot bases and skin infields.
If USSSA bats are allowed at this tournament, I’d suggest those men braving the infield take the necessary precautions, for future generation’s sake.
I’m over 50, so my next generation is already raised. Guess I can eschew the cup?
