AL Cy Young Award: Justin Verlander Captures SB Nation Honor
It is SB Nation MLB awards week, and today we finally get to the Cy Young award...from the American League, that is. We have to wait until Wednesday to see how Clayton Kershaw fared, but in the meantime Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers won the AL Cy Young rather easily, capturing 22 of 24 first place votes:
| Rank | Name | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Justin Verlander | 22 | 2 | 162 | |||
| 2 | CC Sabathia | 2 | 17 | 4 | 1 | 96 | |

In the AL: 12th in ERA, 1st in FIP, 6th in xFIP, 9th in WAR. A much better pick than Fister or Gio

Yeah, if he’s not a catcher then he can’t be a Giant.
Last year at this time the debate was if Torres was legitimate or not.

I suppose they could consider Huff a lost cause
and move Buster to LF or 1b, but I don’t see that happening next year.

or they could run Belt to RF and Huff to LF

Have there been any reports about his leg healing? 1B is out of the question? I know they have Huff and Belt, but Huff is kinda worthless anyways.

Almost the same FIP and xFIP as last year, ERA a run and a half higher. You can’t expect consistency from a pitcher.

The NBA and NHL have more games to drag attendance down while operating at similar capacity. This was inevitable if MLS could consistently approach sell outs

Let me guess the order
1. NFL
2. MLB
3. MLS
4. NBA
5. NHL
I would think NCAAF would be up near the top unless you are talking pro sports only. Does the list change if you go by percent of stadium full? Does that bump MLS to #1?
I would guess MLS still wouldn’t catch NFL in that case. Teams like the Giants, Packers, Jets, et al have had sellouts every week since the 70s.
by Michael White on Nov 8, 2011 10:21 AM PST up reply actions
you've got the order right
and yes, NCAAF doesn’t count since it’s not a pro sport, but capacity also varies greatly from big school to small school. I dunno about percent cap, and yeah Mike’s right, the NFL would probably still be tops

Don’t the casual basketball fans get interested in the NBA right around Christmas Day?
I ask based on advertising. I always see ads for the big Christmas Day basketball games replayed ad nauseum. So I just assume that nobody cares about the NBA until Christmas — and that’s not counting the people who don’t care about the NBA until the postseason.

For the owners, it’s a lot of money. For the players, it’s essentially all of their money. Without knowing the nest egg the union is able to work from, the owners know that the players may have less dollars to lose, but they have more to lose.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
The Clippers and Lakers have my money, issuing credits as games get cancelled. They are not paying the basketball arena’s, they are not paying the players, they have small over heads since they have no tickets to sell. Owners can easily win this if they are not interested in making money in 2011/2012 but the price could be long term fan apathy as it drags on and more and more fans realize they got other stuff to do.
As you said the only money the players have are the salaries, and historically the NBA player has been the player the most likely to spend everything he makes.

You can get a taste of auto racing by participating in an autocross day. My friend races, so I went with him once. It is funny as hell, people racing around a coned tracked in the parking lot in Fontana or wherever.
My buddy races two types of cars. He has a Lotus Elise and sometimes races that. But his big thing lately is the 24 Hours of LeMons, which requires a car purchased for a maximum of $500 and all the teams have silly themes.

Don’t be fooled – despite the cheap cars (FYI, safety equipment is not counted in the price) and silly themes, the teams generally take the racing pretty seriously. Not all of ‘em, of course – there’s only so serious you can be in, say, a hearse – but seriously enough. One should have some idea about what one is doing on a track before signing up.

I don’t mean to be a killjoy. But I do bristle when I hear people thinking of racing cars just for the hell of it. Even the “experts” are subject to the laws of physics (Earnhardt, Weldon, etc. etc.), amateurs are even more prone to disaster.

Check out the fanposts
GScott has put together a reasonable-lookin’ team for a $120 million payroll.
The good news: it looks entertaining and not terrible.
The bad news: it’s not good either.

quis enim, consortes mei, non fateatur
since the older generation has mentioned him before
though i’d post this tidbit about Yoenis Cespedes
The scout compared him to a young Torii Hunter/Vernon Wells type. But he went old school with his best comp: Jimmy "The Toy Cannon" Wynn. Wynn hit 291 homers and stole 225 bases while hitting .250 over a 15-year career (most of which came in the pitching-friendly Astrodome).

Wynn also walked a shit-ton and had a .366 career OBP to go with that. Walked 218 times and K’d 181 in two Dodger seasons.

It's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
It's what you're doin' when you're doin' what you look like you're doin'!
The starting pitchers who are known or thought to be available in trades include:
Rays right-handers James Shields and Wade Davis.
*Athletics lefty Gio Gonzalez and righty Trevor Cahill.
*Braves righty Jair Jurrjens.
*White Sox lefty John Danks and righty Gavin Floyd.
*Cubs righty Carlos Zambrano.
*Dodgers righty Chad Billingsley.
*Astros lefty Wandy Rodriguez.
so is it Known or Thought?
WHICH?!?!?!?!

The McRib as an Arbitrage Vehicle
Key line:
Fast food involves both hideously violent economies of scale and sad, sad end users who volunteer to be taken advantage of
