2012 TBLA #12 & #13 Dodger Prospect Discussion
A late push gave Jonathan Garcia the #11 TBLA Prospect win, and then Angel Sanchez ran away with the #12 Prospect vote. We now move to the #13 prospect vote, and it will be interesting to see if the recent Baseball America ranking influences the vote toward the one eligible player in their top 10 that is not currently on the TBLA list. I have now added a couple of new relievers to the list in Ames and Wall, but I still have at least 5 or 6 more guys to include before the final vote is conducted.
Finally, John Sickels at minorleagueball.com has his preliminary list of Dodger prospects up and he wants to know if he's missing anyone, so feel free to comment over there as well.
Here are the candidates for the Dodgers #13 prospect:
Alfredo Silverio - OF (24.5 years old) - Signed way back in 2003, Silverio finally figured out how to make good use of the athleticism that scouts have seen in him for years. This past season the outfielder led the Southern League in total bases, and hit .306 with 16 homers and a .883 OPS. He also showed good speed with a minor league high 18 triples, but was caught in 12 of his 23 SB attempts. While he spent most of the 2011 in center field, it remains to be seen if he'll be able to handle that position at the big league level.
Angelo Songco - 1B (23 years old) - Songco had a monster season for the Quakes in 2011, leading the California League in doubles and total bases while hitting .313 with 29 homers and 114 RBI's. He's always had a ton of raw power, and it finally showed this past year. He made the switch from left field to 1st base during the season, but overall doesn't have much defensive value so he's going to have to continue to hit as he moves up through the system.
Alex Santana - 3B (18.25 years old) - The 2011 2nd round pick struggled a bit in his professional debut as he hit just .238 average and struck out in 31.2% of his plate appearances, but he's extremely young and raw so those numbers don't mean a whole lot. Santana has good bloodlines, and at 6'4" he's got a great baseball frame. According to Arizona Dodger manager Jody Reed, he has the potential to be a 5-tool player in the future as he has all the skills, just needs to put it all together.
Ethan Martin - RHP (22.5 years old) - Martin was moved to the bullpen midway through the 2011 season, and showed solid improvement as he had a 4.02 ERA in AA with a 9.6 K/9 through 40.1 innings. The former 1st round pick has electric stuff, including a fastball that can reach 98 mph and a big curveball, but he struggles with control. He's still very young so it's possible that he moves back to the rotation at some point, but for now he is going to try to make it to the show as a hard throwing reliever.
Aaron Miller - LHP (24 years old) - Miller was hampered by injuries throughout 2011 and in essence had a lost season as he threw just 34 innings. Even when he was healthy, the 2009 1st round pick was uncharacteristically wild and had an ERA of almost 4 for the Quakes. That being said, at his best Miller features a sneaky fastball and an above average slider. He also shows potential for a slider and I expect that he'll be fully healthy in 2012.
Alex Castellanos - OF (25.25 years old) - Castellanos made a great impression on Dodger prospect fans after joining the team in the Furcal trade as he posted a 1.009 OPS in his 32 games with the Lookouts, connecting on 4 homers, driving in 23 runs, and walking almost as much as he struck out. There has been talk about converting him to either 2nd base or 1st base since the Dodger have a crowded minor league outfield, so it will be interesting to see where he plays next season. He's listed at 5'11" and despite good home run numbers in 2011, he doesn't necessarily project as a true power threat at the big league level.
Griff Erickson - C (23.5 years old) - The switch hitting catcher had a breakout season in 2011, posting a combined .866 OPS between HiA and AA and smacking 13 homers. He also posted an impressive strikeout to walk ratio, and showed strong defensive skills behind the plate. Erickson is still at least a year away from the big leagues, but he's just 23 years old so he's in a good spot.
Scott Van Slyke - OF/1B (25.25 years old) - Van Slyke had the biggest season of his 7 year minor league career in 2011 while playing with the Lookouts. He led the team in every significant offensive category except for runs and stolen bases, and even won the league batting title with a .348 average. His SLG %, OB%, and OPS all ranked 2nd in the league, and his big season earned him a spot on the Dodgers 40 man roster. He doesn't have much defensive value, so he'll have to continue hitting to make it to the show.
Blake Smith - OF (23.75 years old) - A sports hernia injury forced Smith to miss about 6 weeks of the 2011 season, but when healthy Blake was a force to be reckoned with. The 2009 2nd round pick crushed 20 homers in just 313 at bats (including a short rehab), and with the Quakes he had a OPS of almost .900. Smith is a great right fielder with a cannon for an arm, and he recorded 13 outfield assists this past season.
Kyle Russell - OF (25.25 years old) - As we all know by now, Russell is a power hitter that has a knack for striking out. In 2011 Kyle spent most of his season in AA, and with the Lookouts he hit 19 homers while striking out in 32.2% of his plate appearances. The lefty hits right handers very well, so the thought is that at the very least he'll has value at the big leagues as a pinch hitter.
Jake Lemmerman - SS (22.5 years old) - The 2010 MVP of the Pioneer League had a much more average season in 2011, but he did manage to make his way all the way to AA in just his second professional season. Late Night combined for 10 homers and a .785 OPS this past season, and continuing to spend all his time at shortstop. A future move to 2nd or 3rd base might be required thanks to Dee Gordon, but no matter what position he plays he's going to have to continue hitting if he wants to make it to the show.
Josh Wall - RHP (24.75 years old) - As I've mentioned many times before, Wall has found new life in the bullpen and can again be considered a legitimate Dodger prospect. He led the Lookouts with 68.2 inning in relief and posted a 3.93 ERA, which wasn't all that impressive but was the best of his career since 2005. He's currently throwing very well in the AFL and rumor has it that he's hit 100 mph.
Steve Ames -RHP (23.75 years old) - Since getting drafted in 2009, the former 17th round pick has a career ERA of 2.14, a career WHIP of 0.98, and a career K/9 of 13.5 in 109.1 innings. This past season Ames dominated the California League before getting promoted to AA where he continued to have a lot of success. Based on the AFL gameday reports, Ames was throwing in the low 90's with a mid 80's slider.

Harold and Kumar would be proud!
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Pure Azure mentioned the Dodgers are in on Jerry Hairston. As I recall Reg has recently become a big fan. If we were to sign Hairston he would be the guy who could play SS.
Could Ned be planning on dumping Uribe and going with a platoon of Hairston / Kennedy at 3rd base, with Ellis at 2nd?
Probably not, at least we will have a strong veteran bench.
Uribe – 2nd/SS/3rd
Hairston – 2nd/SS/3rd/OF
Kennedy – 2nd/3rd
Ellis – 2nd
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I was wondering if
AJEllis, Loney, MEllis, Gordon, & Uribe would [hypothetically] be the worst starting infield in baseball.
Has the potential to be:
Downsides:
Ellis – .220/.320/.320
Loney – .280 / . 340 / . 380
Ellis – .240 / .290 / . 340
Gordon – .275 / .310 / . 330
Uribe – .220 / .260 / .400
Upside:
Ellis – .260 /.360/.340
Loney – .310 / .370 / . 500
Ellis – .260 / .320 / .380
Gordon .315 / . 345 / .380
Uribe – .260 / .300 / .450
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think you’re underselling M. Ellis. His upside is closer to .280/.350/.400, but the IF still isn’t very good.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Really ????
career minor league Slug % is .380 with four years in the PCL. Yet you make fun of Russell Mitchell.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Huh? He’s had a SLUG of over .390 5 times in the major leagues.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
I’m sorry, I felt you were talking about AJ Ellis
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I missed the M
I’ll take a bet that Mark Ellis does not touch .400 Slug% in 2012 while with the Dodgers if he posts at least 300 major league at bats.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Hairston/Betemit sounds much better. I’d rather just stick with Uribe rather than go Hairston/Kennedy, at least with Uribe there is a chance, though remote, that he could come back and at least hit for some power.
since Kennedy would be getting most of the PAs
I think I’d rather have Uribe at 3B and just hope he takes this season seriously.
Also I think Russ Mitchell and IDJ can outperform the veteran fringe and they could (gasp) use that money on making up for the chump change they spent on international signings last year.*
*(Substitute Sands and Van Slyke for the OF/1B and copy and paste into infinity)
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
I’m not sure Russ Mitchell can outperform a rosin bag.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
I’m with Nolij on this one. I think any plan that calls for Mitchell to be any part of our success next year is a deeply flawed one.
Who said anything about success? :)
We’ll be .500 either way. We’re talking a backup role, but if you don’t like him bring up Van Slyke before he’s eligible for Social Security or sign anyone from the scrapheap and don’t waste so much money on Juan Rivera to be a lefty masher.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
We always have this debate every year. Having a 25th man who is not very good is not someone that “plans” on him to be part of a teams success. You all forget just what makes up a 25th player. Some years it is Juan Castro.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I’d much rather have Sellers or IDJ. I think there is a very small chance he makes the team next year.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Are we pencilling Sands and Oeltjen as the OF reserves or will Ned sign a veteran to round out the group?
Gwynn.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
I like TGJ….I like his Dad better though
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
He’s old, fat and is in chemo. He’d probably still post a higher BA, but would not be as useful in the field or on the basepaths.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Isn't Ned eating up his budget on backup infielders?
What about someone for the rotation?

if Sanchez starts to run away with the vote
and so far he has a 5 to 1 lead over castle, i’ll end it early and move on. I thought above awarding sanchez the #12 prospect with out a vote, but castle got a decent amount of support last round so i thought this at least warranted a vote
Once this vote is done it will be interesting which AA outfielder starts getting support. I can easily see Van Slyke and Silverio starting to make headway against the Castle proponents. And then you have the young Schebler.
Also if Tolleson is number eight, what does that make Wall?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Songco and Smith too.
I know Wall has the big fastball now as a reliever, but I don’t see how he could go higher than Ames after his performance last year.
Yes, hard to find real separation between:
Silverio
Castle
Van SLyke
Smith
Songco
Aames / Wall should be together
yet Martin still has the arm to be better then any of our possible minor league relief pitchers.
Also Juan Rodriquez
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I’m beginning to talk myself into Smith having the most upside of the group. True athlete who is actually getting better as he advanced (improved all peripherals at a higher level).
His K rate is still too high though. He’s like the new, slightly younger version of Kyle Russell at 24, so a little more room for optimism. AA will be telling, but he seems like the type of athlete where things could just come together for him. Plus power, plus defense, can take a walk. Just needs to make more contact.
Songco obviously outperformed him with the bat and is younger, but the defensive limitation is a real hindrance.
I have a feeling the Yankees will trade for a starting pitcher. Don’t know why but Garza/Dempster stand out to me and Theo could end up doing some business with his ex-rivals.

Too early for Lemmerman it seems
as I would be the first vote for him and it wouldn’t even matter. Perhaps i’ll wait a couple rounds.

That's true
At this point I’m helping Sanchez win quickly so we can get people voting for other prospects in the next vote, hopefully we’ll see some lemmerman support at that point.

key paragraph
I really do think the Dodgers have the least exciting, most depressing infield in baseball. There are, of course, a few other contenders. I counted the Astros, the A’s, the Cubs, the Padres, the Pirates, and the Twins. But the Twins have the Morneau and Mauer wild cards, while the other infields are much younger, still being built, or both. The Dodgers strike me as having the worst combination of age and skill sets.
Damn, I was just bringing that exact paragraph over.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I feel then need to make fun of whatever team Jeff Sullivan follows. Hope it is not the Cardinals.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It’s something in the AL, apparently.

OMG, that will be so easy. At least he got a good look at Kennedy’s bat speed.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think he's absolutely qualified to talk about our horrid infield
Especially with watching Kennedy (hit fucking 4th at certain times last year!).
I think Loney and Gordon will make things interesting, at least.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
Anyone is qualified to talk about our team, does not change the fact I now want to make fun of their own team. Not like the TBLA writers here feel the need to start writing about other teams. Oh wait
nevermind
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It was more a joke that Kennedy was not only a starter for them
But hit clean up for a portion of the season, man now that’s a joke, lol.
I should have had the Loney and Gordon part in another post
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
Jim Loney and Gordon could be fun to watch. Kennedy is a no-factor for me and Ellis could at least be good defensively. Uribe is what sours the whole thing.
There were two weeks during the season when Uribe was fun to watch. I’m sure he will expand that to about five weeks next year.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

will be subpar on offense but will rake with the gloves. Can you rake with gloves? I suppose you can. Probably easier to rake leaves with a glove than a bat, or maybe just tie the glove to the end of the bat and rake away. Thoughts?

Nonsense – any infield with Dee Gordon can not rate as the least exciting in baseball. Has this clown ever seen Gordon play???
Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.
The sad thing is
There is hardly any infield help on the free agency market next year to help out and we have nothing on the farm. Its time to get creative and we don’t have a GM who knows how.
Should’ve gotten some 3B or 2B help instead of FedEx. At least we could have gone after Montero or Napoli next year.
made me laugh
The Dodgers paid to bring in Treanor, who is old and bad. They brought in Kennedy, who is old and bad, with bat speed as if he were swinging through custard.

We had just had seven tree’s trimmed but I was worried about our old and large pine since he has lost one huge limb before and the others have some cracks, but so far so good.
A few years ago we lost a tree and it crashed on my Brat but did not break the window. I went out and started cutting limbs off it to release the pressure, made one mistake and boom, it crashed through the winder and crushed the right front door.

Since you asked:)
Before organized football hit our age group we always played after school. Then when were old enough for organized football we would do both. Pads for the league games, nothing for the fun and tumble games after school or on weekends.
I did not play high school as I found football practice extremely boring and I was not going to be good enough to be more then a bit player until I was a senior and that did not interest me. However I had plenty of friends that we still played football all the time. Even after college we would play, and we only stopped when one of our friends broke his ankle, and we all realized that we were married, going to be starting families so it was important that we still be able to work. So about age 25 was the last time I played recreational football.

Football practice in high school is just tiring as hell! I wish I was still getting that kind of workout today with much good of shape I was in back then. The worst part was usually the end, after all the practicing we would do our running drills, which are horrible (for me) after 3 hours of practice, lol.

I'm pretty sure a LOT more money is given out in the NFL draft
then in the MLB draft, but there are so many rounds in the MLB draft maybe I’m wrong.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
it's still more in the NFL
hell, probably more in the NBA even with 2 rounds.
After like the 5th round in baseball, no one gets 6 figure bonuses. And if they do, it’s because they were JuCo signability guys who got a couple hundred grand.
No. 1 football guy usually had to endure at least three years of college to do it, No. 1 baseball guy frequently gets it out of HS.

in the hope they ever sniff the bigs. If you are good enough to go #1 in baseball or basketball go baseball, sure. Lee did it, Crawford did it. but the appeal of football over baseball is easy to see for these kids.
Plus, “enduring” college isn’t exactly what these kids are doing if you know what i mean

No. 1 pick in NFL
has played 3 or 4 years in college and has some demonstration (whether or not it will pan out) of his skill level at the NFL.
No. 1 pick in baseball could be at a minimum 2 years away or maybe 4 years away from beginning to play in MLB plus he is under club control for maybe 9/11 years of his professional career (minors and majors).
NO JUST NO
BAD TBLArs BAD. His contract was “special” Most contracts for up to 40 million guarenteed to do not give teams the kind of out that McNabb had, and he would have gotten at least 15 million out of it. This deal was NOT the norm. NOT.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
But
it is true that there are no such things as a fully guaranteed NFL contract.
Is it true that for the MLB and NBA player, the amount he signs the deal for is the amount he will get paid short of retiring or a buy out.
Thus, while McNabb’s deal may be unique, it is an example of the power the teams have over the players in those types of negotiations.
Its really a terrible example
when the deal first came out it made no sense to give it to McNabb because he simply hadn’t played well that year. Then everyone found out they had an out where they would only pay him 3 million and it made sense.

more on MLB bonuses
“No Major League Uniform Player’s Contract or Minor League Uniform Player Contract shall be approved if it contains a bonus for playing, pitching or batting skill or if it provides for the payment of a bonus contingent on the standing of the signing Club at the end of the championship season.”
Regarding Schilling, here is a New York Times article from October 2004:
When Schilling was negotiating a contract extension with the Red Sox as part of his trade from Arizona last November, he asked for and received a bonus of $2 million for next season if the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. Schilling’s salary will go to $14 million from $12 million because Boston won.
The commissioner’s office has since prohibited such arrangements.

Baseball Game in Cuba
For a class at USC we have the opportunity to go to Cuba later this month. I have read about how fun baseball games are to watch there, but I can’t find any information or a schedule. For sure,
I plan on smoking several and bringing home as many as possible. The professor told us we are normally allowed to bring back two cases, but I’m going to try to get the non-smokers to bring some back for me too.
That would appear to go against everything I have heard about
bringing back goods from Cuba. But good luck to you on that.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
It is still considered illegal
And Customs will seize them if they find them.
There is a total ban on the importation into the United States of Cuban-origin cigars and other Cuban-origin tobacco products. This prohibition extends to such products acquired in Cuba, irrespective of whether a traveler is licensed by Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) to engage in Cuba travel-related transactions, and to such products acquired in third countries by any U.S. Traveler, including purchases at duty-free shops. Contrary to what many people may believe, it is illegal for travelers to bring into the United States Cuban cigars acquired in third countries, such as Canada, United Kingdom, or Mexico.

towards anyone here, but I have read on a few websites something along these lines:
“This law, in practice, has been expanded by the public and law enforcement to allow the public to import small amounts of up to 2 boxes of Cuban Cigars for personal use.”
Perhaps the gov’t has to officially appear to take a strong position against Cuban imports. Similar, in my mind, to how in many localities marijuana is illegal, but simple possession is rarely, if ever, prosectuted.

I don't know if any of us are certain he will be gone
Maybe, for reasons other than where he will be drafted, he wants to stay one more. Including wanting to play a season that will actually count for USC. I was just responding to BH’s “If…”

The Ducks posted video of new coach Bruce Boudreau leading his first practice with Anaheim, but I was wondering…are there coaches in the NHL who can’t skate? I would imagine there are; I was just having fun with the mental image of, say, Tommy Lasorda on ice.
I doubt there are. Skating is a rudimentary hockey skill. That would be like having a baseball manager who couldn’t throw.

He’s beyond annoying, and not because he wants to be in love. Because he’s a phony and self-important and lacking in self-awareness and … I could go on.
A lot of the stuff he does reminds me of the path JD from Scrubs started going after season 3, which is kind of clingy and not wholy believable, but i still enjoy the stuff both actors bring to the parts.

Jonah Keri on what the Dodgers need
Keri is going through what all the teams need, did the AL yesterday and the NL today. Here’s his blurb on the Dodgers:
What They Need: No more Frank McCourt, good players beyond Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw
.
What They’ll Likely Do: Are the Dodgers signing crappy players because the league hasn’t yet punted Frank McCourt and freed the team’s finances? Or are these moves GM Ned Colletti would choose to make regardless of circumstances? It’s the latter scenario that should scare Dodgers fans. The McCourt saga has been well documented, with the Dodgers owner and his now-ex-wife chopping the team up into multiple shell companies, then looting those entities for personal needs. But even with scant resources and constant distractions … was $8.75 million for an aging, can’t-hit Mark Ellis the best use of funds? Juan Rivera? Matt Treanor? Going back to last year … Rod Barajas? Three years and $21 million for Juan Uribe?! If the Rays can find a shutdown closer for $3 million and the Twins can get a middle-of-the-order thumper for half that, why do the Dodgers keep signing near-replacement-level players for more money?
.
In Kemp and Kershaw, the Dodgers might have both the best position player and best pitcher in the league — advantages that give any team a fighting chance. But the roster is a near-wasteland beyond those two, made worse when Jamey Carroll, one of Colletti’s few good signings, took his desperately needed on-skills to Minnesota. Now we’re supposed to believe that James Loney will ride his two-month 2011 hot streak to a 25-homer season when he’s never hit more than 15 in one year? That Ellis will suddenly start hitting again as he approaches his 36th birthday? That Dee Gordon, who couldn’t draw a walk if his life depended on it, is a legitimate major league leadoff hitter?2 The bullpen has some exciting, young arms, Andre Ethier could bounce back nicely if his health cooperates, and you’ve got Kemp and Kershaw coming off a season in which they delivered 15.5 Wins Above Replacement. It’s incredibly frustrating that this team can’t execute on the little moves they need to build a credible roster beyond that? Blame whomever you like, but that’s where we’re at.

My thoughts
1. These moves are not good.
2. It’s not like it matters anyway. We went through a whole exercise where we built 120 million payrolls and make some pretty creative moves and we got the team to, what, low-80s wins? And the payroll isn’t gonna be that high, and no GM would be as creative with his moves as we were.
3. I want to see Colletti replaced, too, but I can certainly imagine him being replaced by somebody even worse.

Well, "sure" in a relative sense. Anything can happen.
But let’s just say that given recent sports franchise history, when a new owner comes in, the old GM usually (not always but most often) is a goner. They want a GM they chose themselves, that they know they can work with, etc. And if a GM is gonna be kept by new ownership, they’re gonna have to have a good track record over past couple of years of success, and Ned is unlikely to have that.
Look at recent ownership moves. Look at how fast the Astros’ GM was gone when their new ownership was approved.
Thus, I’d put $100 if I were betting and could bet on such things, on Colletti being gone by end of next season if not sooner.

The problem with Ned is not that he is risk averse. After witnessing the 2005 season, I’m all for a little hedging of bets. The problem with Ned is the following:
1. The team has drafted poorly, leaving the farm system bare.
2. The team has not invested in foreign free agents, leaving the farm system bare.
3. The bare farm system requires Ned to find players on the FA market.
4. The team has a limited payroll.
5. Colletti put the resources he did have into pennant runs in 2008-09, and it almost worked. Now the day has come to pay the piper.

Well said. I still say he's not especially creative
nor forward thinking when it comes to player analysis. Especially in free agent signings. But yes, good points — and of course some of this is still budget+ownership related as much as anything. Improving scouting and spending internationally would help (seems they are getting slightly better there, but maybe not necessarily in budget).
At any rate, I think the piper will be paid in 2012 and he’ll have to find a new hamlet.

Capuano, even if he somehow gave up a ton of dingers at Citi Field. Harang’s been steadily declining for years.

Right.
I remember Tommy Prothro having his QB quick kick once from a shotgun on third down from deep in his own end (not while running). With no return man, the ball just rolled and he got pretty decent punt with no return for a good field position trade. Made more sense in eras with much less offense than now.

I don't think I'd ever not go for it on 4th and 1 if i was past my own 35 yard line
That’s why I’m going to be the greatest NFL coach ever some day.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I don’t think I’d ever go for a field goal inside the opponents’ 5 yard line (unless it was close to the end of the game and the margin was 3 or less.)
That said, the whole idea of punt vs. not punt is a false choice. The punters and the not-punters both advocated going after Prince Fielder. The difference is that the not-punters thought Fielder would give the Dodgers a chance to compete in ‘12, and the punters thought that even if he didn’t, he’s a special player who will be good for a long time.

I’d rather spend 6 Million on the 13% chance that Jim Loney can produce 73% of what Prince Fielder will produce making 22.5 Million.

Except when you get “elite” overweight talent, you have to keep it for a long time and some physical conditions can get one owrried. Either way, there’s no way Prince or Pujols was going to sign a 1-2 year contract.

Dammit!
Were trying to make the playoffs for the 1st time since 2002 and our best linebacker is over in Alabama shooting people… WTF is he doing over there anyways, this aint a bye week.
CSN Bay Area reports Raiders MLB Rolando McClain has been arrested in connection with a Wednesday evening shooting in his hometown of Decatur, Ala.
McClain is accused of both firing his weapon and holding it to another man’s head. He has been charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, third degree assault, menacing and reckless endangerment. He remains in custody. Obviously, his status for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins is now in severe doubt, while it’s possible he’s played his final down this season. Stay tuned.

It used to be known as quinine water as well. Then there’s this, according to wikipedia (not bothering to research it further):
The quinine was added to the drink as a prophylactic against malaria, since it was originally intended for consumption in tropical areas of South Asia and Africa, where that disease is endemic. The mixed drink gin and tonic originated in British colonial India when the British population would mix their medicinal quinine tonic with gin to make it more palatable.

The best night of comedy
70s – All in the Family, MASH, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart (and Carol Burnett)
80s – Cosby, Family Ties, Cheers, Night Court
90s – something where Seinfeld was the anchor
HIMYM? You’re kidding, right?
That’s as big a no-contest as I’ve seen, plus it’s weird you’re leaving Community off.
Community and Parks and Rec both started in ’09.
Would probably be:
Scrubs/My Name is Earl/The Office/30 Rock
which was sort of my point, are we defining best as best performing, as all those shows were, or best quality, as all those shows were?
I don’t mean to be rude when I say this, but how many TV viewers outside a network office define “best” as best-performing? We’re at TBLA – I would be shocked if “best” didn’t mean highest-quality.
I very much like HIMYM and BBT. 2.5Men is an abomination to all that I hold dear. That dreck is all that keeps the former CBS Monday night lineup from consideration in my eyes.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

Yes, though I’m tired of the Indian and Howard’s mother.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
My argument is solely on an “isn’t it interesting” level. Isn’t it interesting that the agreed upon best show of the 00s was cancelled midway through it’s third year. Isn’t it interesting, that what everyone is watching, is no longer what that critical consensus says is best
That’s interesting though not particularly new. But of course, it wasn’t at all clear that that’s what you were getting at with your first comment.
Not surprising a Stanford man was unable to understand what a Berkley girl was trying to say.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
but 2.5 Men is the most watched comedy on TV. Can you just disgard it, and the shows that launched around it, in a “Best of” list?

Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
70’s easily for me, with each decade the sitcom writers simply copy what was original in the 70’s. Or what seemed original.
Luckily in todays world you can create your own night of comedy with Hulu Plus or your DVR
Using todays shows that would be:
Modern Family
Big Bang
Community
Whitney
simply not much sitcom comedy left. P&R has blown chunks this year, even worse then Community.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Jon, not a P&R show I’ve seen this year that I could not have told everything that was going to happen. They are no longer funny or original, they have lost their way, I’m shocked you still like them. As far as Whitney goes
Hey Buddy
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I don’t know why you’d be shocked I still like a great show. Your take on the show is unlike that of anyone I know.
Is that a Whitney joke at the end? I wouldn’t get it even if it were explained to me.
If you didn’t get it, then I guess you don’t watch Whitney.
I used to love P&R, but they stopped evolving, they turned the star into a bitch, it lost it’s lure for me. I no longer laugh. Whitney even with all of the problems can still make me laugh. They have terrible co-starts but I like the couple.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Still the sitcom that looked like it was going to make a comeback has died. The fact I can only name four shows I’d watch and those are the four just show how far it has fallen.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Somehow we’ve had this whole discussion without mentioning “Louie,” which is a huge omission.
I’d also put my vote in for “Bored to Death,” though that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
I kind of like Bored to Death but as I was watching the last episode I was wondering if maybe the cast if having to much fun at the price of the show.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
No, I did not keep watching a terrible show.
How is Leslie a bitch? Because for a few weeks she had trouble dealing with her love for Ben vs. her desire to have a political future?
Here’s the list of P&R episodes this season. Even if you could guess in broad strokes how any of them ended, I find it unfathomable one could call the storytelling in these predictable.
Okay, maybe I’ve simply watched to much TV in my life.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
So we can talk crap about Car 54 Where Are You with immunity?
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
What do you want me to say?
Who didn’t know the business would bust in a huge fireball and he would end up back at city hall
Who didn’t know that Leslie would eventually figure she didn’t have to mask her feeling for Ben
Who didn’t know the practical nurse and the boss would end up hitting it off
The caricatures have simply become to caricatured. Unlike MTM these people are not real, nor working in a real world, yet they strive to be MTM.
Community understands they are crazy figments and flies or crashes with it.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I will add this
just checking, the famed CBS lineup that I mentioned was on for one season.
For most popular comedy night, it has to be from the mid-70s when ABC had Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Three’s Company on (one year Soap followed that).
Yes, by best, I meant subjective quality.
For popularity, the highest watched comedy in TV history is probably “The Beverly Hillbillies”, certainly in their first two seasons.
Only Josie felt you did not meann subjective quality, otherwise there would no debate, we would simply look at the numbers.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
in 1978
the Tuesday night comedy lineup for ABC ranked 1,2, 3, and 11th. (Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Three’s Company and Soap)
more thinking out loud about things that have probably already been figured out
(like my history blog!)
But it seems like maybe in the end, if you are on long enough to go into syndication, the quality wins out over quantity. Three’s company and Happy Days were still in syndication when I was a kid, but MASH is the one still in syndication today.
