Dodgers Announce 2012 Minor League Coaching Staffs: The Return Of Doug Mientkiewicz
The Dodgers today announced their 2012 minor league coaching staffs, which for the most part looks quite similar to the 2011 staffs. The most notable addition is Doug Mientkiewicz, who will make his coaching debut as the hitting coach for the Ogden Raptors in the advanced Rookie league. Former Dodger pitcher Matt Herges, who was pitching coach for the Arizona Rookie League Dodgers in 2011, will move up to Class A to be the pitching coach for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2012.
The complete Dodgers’ minor league staff is listed below (coaching changes in italics):
Field Coordinator: Bruce Hines
Senior Advisor, Player Development: P.J. Carey, Gene Clines, Charlie Hough
Senior Advisor, Latin America: Ramon Martinez
Hitting Coordinator: Eric Owens
Pitching Coordinator: Rafael Chaves
Outfield/Baserunning Coordinator: Damon Mashore
Infield Coordinator: Jody Reed
Catching Coordinator: Travis Barbary
Coordination of Arizona Instruction: Matt Martin
Campo Las Palmas Coordinator: Henry Cruz
Field Coordinator, Campo Las Palmas: Antonio Bautista
Triple-A Albuquerque:
Manager: Lorenzo Bundy
Hitting Coach: John Valentin
Pitching Coach: Glenn Dishman
The staff returns intact. Bundy served as a coach in the XM All-Star Futures Game in 2011.
Double-A Chattanooga:
Manager: Carlos Subero
Hitting Coach: Franklin Stubbs
Pitching Coach: Chuck Crim
Subero returns for his third season managing the Lookouts. Crim saw four of his pitchers (Rubby De La Rosa, Javy Guerra, Josh Lindblom, and Nathan Eovaldi) make the majors in 2011.
Single-A Rancho Cucamonga:
Manager: Juan Bustabad
Hitting Coach: Michael Boughton
Pitching Coach: Matt Herges
Bustabad and Boughton were together with Great Lakes in 2010 and return for their second season with the Quakes, joined by Herges as the new pitching coach.
Single-A Great Lakes:
Manager: John Shoemaker
Hitting Coach: Razor Shines
Pitching Coach: Hector Berrios
Shoemaker returns for his second season as manager of Great Lakers. Berrios was the pitching coach for Rancho Cucamonga in 2011. Shines has eight seasons of experience as a minor league manager, and was last on the major league staff for the New York Mets in 2009 and 2010. Shines' son Devin was drafted by the Dodgers in 2011 and played center field for the AZL Dodgers. It seems the paths of father and son will cross at some point in the next few years.
Rookie-advanced Ogden:
Manager: Damon Berryhill
Hitting Coach: Doug Mientkiewicz
Pitching Coach: Bill Simas
Berryhill will return for a third season managing the Raptors, joined by a pair of green coaches. Simas will return as pitching coach in his second year of coaching, and Mientkiewicz will be making his coaching debut.
Rookie-level Arizona League Dodgers:
Manager/Coordinator of Arizona Instruction: Matt Martin
Hitting Coach: Leo Garcia
Pitching Coach: Kremlin Martinez
Martin essentially switched roles with Jody Reed for 2012. Martinez was the pitching coach for Single A Great Lakes in 2011.
Rookie-level Dominican Summer League Dodgers:
Manager: Pedro Mega
Hitting Coach: Keyter Collado
Pitching Coach: Alejandro Peña
Catching Coach: Jose D. Hernandez
Assistant Coach: Rafael Ozuna
Mega will manage his sixth season with the DSL Dodgers. Collado at 25 is the youngest coach in the system, having just retired after catching for parts of six seasons in the Dodgers' system.
Camelback Ranch – Glendale:
Pitching/Rehab Coach: Jim Slaton
Coach: Johnny Washington
Coach: Esteban Lopez
Slaton adds the title of rehab coach to his duties for 2012 in addition to overseeing the pitchers at the Dodgers' facility in Glendale. Washington was the hitting coach for the last two years in Ogden. Lopez was the hitting coach in 2011 for the Dominican Summer League Dodgers.

Hierarachy
Is it always considered a promotion to move up to the same coaching job in the next-level minor league team, and vice versa, as for players? (Aside from anomalies like AA better than AAA for Dodger org pitchers due to local conditions.) Or is a lower level team never considered more important as a teaching environment, and therefore more prestigious for coaches?
So is Martinez moving from A to Rookie a demotion? And what about Berrios moving from High-A to Low-A (probably not)?
What about Martin (now Rookie Manager and Arizona Coordinator) switching jobs with Reed (now Minor League Infield Coordinator)? Looks like Martin up and Reed down?
There are some cases where moving up is a promotion. For instance, Herges gets a new challenge at a (slightly) higher level after his first year.
But it’s not necessarily linear; like Gary said, they will organize the coaches where they can help the prospects most in many cases.
There are also organizational soldiers, like John Shoemaker. 2012 will be his 36th season coaching in the Dodgers system, and he has been at just about every level up and down the system.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 22, 2011 6:29 PM PST up reply actions
Shouldn’t have included “slightly” for Herges. He is moving to a full season league. I was thinking low Class A for a moment, but he was in the AZL rookie league last year. Definite promotion for him.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 22, 2011 6:32 PM PST up reply actions
Herges is an awesome Guy. Very down to earth. When I was 17 I was able to able to chat it up with him for most of the Dodgers BP shagging in RF back in 99. The other Bat boy got stuck with bucket duty. He was real humble with his responses like when I asked him how he fared against Sosa who was huge at the time. He did really well against him but downplayed its significance. I think I got to spend more time conversing with Herges than any other player that Marlins series. I will be forever greatful to Lasorda for granting me that opportunity. Its surely something I will never forget. Best part was the rain delay when I got to battle in ping pong against Hubbard & Grudtz. They had the Juvenile 400degreez CD on loop for hours. Beltre was the youngest player in the lockerroom and hung primarily with Sheffield & Mondesi. Jeff Shaw was the only one who smoked cigarettes.

Little known fact about John Shoemaker: he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 6th round of the 1978 NBA draft.
He played in the Dodgers’ minor league system for four seasons (1977-1980) before starting his coaching career in 1981. So 2012 will be his 36th year in the Dodgers’ org but 32nd as coach.

Got my new glove in the mail today. It’ll be ready for the Dodger blogger tournament!
Anyone wanna play catch?
I’m in the south bay, and I’m putting some oil in it tonight. When I break gloves in I like to oil them up, and put it under my mattress overnight, and catch with it as much as possible. My friend is getting a new glove for Christmas, so I’m sure he’ll be eager to play catch with me too, but I wanna use it already!
i know a guy who would play catch with you, hit, field, pitch, catch, whatever, anytime you like. He lives in Hermosa on second street. Dude really loves the game and wants to learn how to get better. Very good friend, very great guy. Let me know if you’re interested.
Cool, I might be interested. Although coaching high school baseball usually gives me plenty of guys who are also willing to play catch
i was excited to recommend him because you coach. I can and have helped him, but since i moved to the valley it’s been more difficult to work with him
met him last summer playing in our work league. he was bad but had a good arm in the summer, but has gotten to the point where he fields and hits at a reasonable level, and has started catching so his arm has more of an impact. he really just needs someone to throw with on a more regular basis.
yep. played at Marine Park. 4 week spring training in May followed by 10 week season and playoffs. Couple guys on here (Nolij and Ishxdavid(sp?)) play in that league too.
talent is roughly at a high school jv/varsity, but the people are the best i’ve ever met and there is enough talent to make it fun. Plus, since you’re skilled, you’re guaranteed to not be on my team, so you’d get to face me twice :)
Wow, that’s pretty bad ass that you guys have a work hardball league. And I don’t know how skilled I am, what’s the saying? Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach. That’s why I coach instead of still play. Actually, I’d be decent defensively, but I would need to hit the cages and see some live pitching before I made a fool of myself in the batter’s box
nice, I hate having to wear plastic cleats for softball when metal cleats are soo much better, especially on the surface that I usually play softball on
when the season gets closer i’ll give you a holler. most games are sunday afternoon or nights but some are monday nights.
ah, figures, most hardball leagues I hear of are Sunday mornings/early afternoons, and I’m usually too busy with church and stuff, but Sunday nights could work.
I’d appreciate a heads up when the league gets closer, thanks!
I am seriously considering trying to play in your league
my games are at 9:00AM and 1:00 in the spring

A Dangerous Method
I see tonight. Heard Vigo is excellent.
Regarding Fincher, most of what he does is very good ( I loved The Game) but I really liked the OG version and feel weary…

I liked the first Swedish film but thought the 2nd and 3rd got progressively worse
lost interest. I liked the first two books but lost interest by the third, too.
But I love Fincher so I’m looking forward to the new one.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

NFL owners – two of the greatest family names?
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
I’m guessing it’s one of Wellington Mara’s 20 grandkids.

she is kin to both the Mara’s and the Rooney’s
NFL princess is the truest sense of the word

to be more specific
She is the great-granddaughter of both Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, Sr. and New York Giants founder Tim Mara
What an awesome family to marry into.

I thought for a second Rooney-Mara was her hyphenated last name. Seems a bit precocious that they named her Rooney, but it turns out that’s just her middle name.

Cardinals will be interesting
Lose Pujols
Only team who has a possible HOF ready to play 1st baseman to replace him in Berkman.
Beltran replaces Berkman
Allen Craig ready to break out
Adam Wainwright returns
Shelby Miller (best RH pitching prospect in NL) ready to knock down door
Present could still be bright if Berkman / Beltran stay healthy all year. Still look like the easy pick in the NL Central.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Yeah the Cards lost the best player in baseball
But they have an really good all-star taking his place and another all-star taking Berkman’s. Damn, wainwright coming back is like a huge free agent signing as well. If Miller can come up during the year their already great staff could be just awesome.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
I just realized I parroted what you wrote
I just hadn’t really thought about all of that, it’s pretty great for them.
TBLA 2011 Postseason Prediction Champion
after seeing craig and freese in the playoffs
i was convinced they will still be great without pujols.
Wore number 44
He hit 44 home runs 4 times
How cool is that?

My JV year, I wore #44
Struck out 4 times in a tournament once
How cool is that?

Ralph Kiner - one of a kind
Started playing major league baseball in 1946
Led the league in home runs his FIRST SEVEN years in the league
Only played three seasons after his first seven.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Led the league in HR, RBI, SLG, OPS, and OPS+ in 1949, but didn’t win MVP (he finished fourth).
Some dude named Jackie was busy owning the NL that year.

I’m 2/3 through a list of eighty players, I think Matt Kemp has done something unique but it took unique parameters to find it. Eric will laugh at my criteria but I find this stuff fascinating.

I bet I have an idea what your criteria is.

SS Ernie Banks is a HOF for a reason
From age 24-29 (covering six seasons) as a SS for the Cubs he hit over 43 home runs five times.
