Marcus Thames - TBLA 2011 Community Review
What were we drinking thread. The unbridled optimism from the TBLA community had no bounds for Mr. Left Field.

The experts were wrong, the community was wrong. At some point Michael White confused Marcus Thames with Craig Monroe but little did he know that he was being prophetic. I'm not even going to post some of the projections, safe to say everyone thought he'd at least hit against LHP.
The thread itself was one of our better spring threads, so while I'm not going to give you anything to read here, if you are bored take a look at what we were discussing on March 24, 2011.

Wiggy is going to be a valuable player for them, kind of what I had hoped Blake would be by 2011 instead of our regular 3rd baseman.

that could end up a crappier signing than I even predicted (not that he costs a fortune but…) Both in the field and at the plate.

MMA is really just like any other athletic competition
many of these guys have been practicing martial arts since they were kids, and they love it so much, they still want to do it as they grow up. And they want to test themselves against the best the world has to offer.
"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."
by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 29, 2011 8:31 PM PST up reply actions
I think that MMA will be a niche sport for the foreseeable future. The deal with Fox to show 4 fights per year is huge. But, man, you have to think it would have benefited the UFC in the long run to sign with ESPN/ABC even if it was for less money. We all know the power of the ESPN hype machine.
Anyway, I stop trying to tell people to watch MMA unless I can get them in the same room as me when an event is going on so I can explain what’s going on.
Yeah, I'm not trying to make mintxcore or anyone a fan
i just don’t like the “anything goes deathmatch” stigma that MMA has

Same here
I’m still a fairly new MMA fan (I don’t count when I was 10 years old renting UFC 3 from Blockbuster), I don’t defend any sports to people who just reflexively complain about it. And while MMA is a sport that doesn’t get a ton of support on this board, in real life the sport that I love that gets shit on the most is baseball. “It’s boring, it’s too slow, blah blah blah.” I honestly don’t care if other people like it any more.
by Michael White on Dec 30, 2011 7:53 AM PST up reply actions
I think that MMA’s early days (when headbutts were allowed, no time limits, etc.) are almost a different sport.
This was a time when a guy thought wearing one boxing glove would be a good idea!
But, yeah, I realize that MMA isn’t a mainstream choice and I’m alright with that. And, damn, I hope Donald Cerrone beats the crap out of Nate Diaz tonight.
Not really, but I do respect him. I’d like to see him actually finish a fight for once.
Someone said yesterday that Fitch can beat any welterweight in the world unless their initials are GSP (which is true) — and that isn’t a bad thing, to be the second best in the world to one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.
Everyone should be.

by Michael White on Dec 30, 2011 10:30 AM PST up reply actions
Plus the Fitch is boring complaints are a little overblown I think.
Yes, he makes no attempt to actually finish anyone, but he’s way more active than most other wrestlers so he’s at least interesting when he’s lying on someone. Problem comes when he’s fighting someone that’s totally outclassed and they just curl into a ball and don’t move.
I think Fitch/Hendricks will be good.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant

Would be interesting if Hendricks could keep the fight standing. Hopefully Hendricks has improved his MMA wrestling since the Story fight.

I remember being 10 years old and having no idea what a triangle choke was. Dan Severn was in Royce’s Gracie’s guard and 10 year old me thought that was a good thing. Next thing you know, Severn taps out. I was completely stunned.

Trying to think of who would be in that “Oh crap, he’s on the ground with him!” camp.
Probably Frank Mir, Big Nog, Maia, the Diaz brothers and Aoki.
I don’t think it exists anymore, at least at the highest levels of the UFC (unless you are fighting Chael Sonnen). It’s incredibly hard to tap someone out when they know how to defend.
Or as Cerrone put it
“If he wants to take the fight to the ground, go ahead. He’ll just lay on his back, get beat, flip me off and yell ‘209.’”
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Dec 30, 2011 10:32 AM PST up reply actions
I still think that Maia is at that level.
Problem is that there is almost no one in MMA (outside of Pat Barry and Dan Hardy) who is completely helpless on their back.
And I hate Chael Sonnen.
Even then Maia is pretty clearly the best grappler in the UFC and the last guy he subbed was…Chael Sonnen.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Dec 30, 2011 10:37 AM PST up reply actions
Problem for Maia is that he doesn’t have the wrestling to get guys to the ground. He would have had Munoz if Munoz wasn’t so strong.
And Maia hasn’t tapped anyone out since Chael though, right?
I assume Maia loses to Bisping by Bisping keeping it standing and out-pointing him in a kickboxing match.

If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
Sure, but a newbie who stumbles upon our site from Yahoo expecting a Dodger blog would have every reason to be taken aback by what we do talk about. Making fun of them is surely not the way for us to ingratiate ourselves with them.

I watched the last Howdy Doody show by accident. Clarabelle the Clown was the last to sign off.
From Wikipedia:
Clarabell was first played by Bob Keeshan, who continued in that role until 1952. Keeshan was fired after a salary dispute and later became Captain Kangaroo at CBS. At the end of the final episode, telecast on September 24, 1960, Clarabell (then played by jazz musician Lew Anderson) broke his series-long silence to say the final words of the final broadcast: “Goodbye, kids.” Lew Anderson followed Nick Nicholson,6 who also played Doodyville’s J. Cornelius Cobb.

Not a Lakers fan, but know there is one or two (dozen) here. NY Times profiled Metta World Peace.
"We’re all more mature than what we were back then," [Lakers coach Mike] Brown said. "We’re a lot more stable with what our roles are, with what our expectations are. He’s no different than I am."
.
That last statement might be a bit of a stretch. But Brown clearly has a special fondness for World Peace, and a respect for the name change, even as others snicker. "I think I try to call him Metta more than anybody else," Brown said. "I’m like ‘Metta, Metta Metta.’ And then I hear Steve Blake, ‘Hey Ron.’ I hear Kobe: ‘Hey Ron. Hey Ron, hey Ron.’ And it throws me off. So I’m trying. But nobody is helping me."
Mike Brown
So far is living up to his rep of being a good defensive coach, and even if the team is not as good as in years past, it’s been kind of fun watching them not having to deal with the triangle. The guards look so happy.

As one of Thames' biggest supporters
I’ll defend the projections. The guy mashed lefties throughout his career and had a very successful year in the AL the prior year in a platoon role. Other than just taking a shot in the dark and suggest that this is the year he ages and sucks, being optimistic about his role within a platoon seemed fairly reasonable to me.
Also (as I attempt to go down with the ship) I still think that he would have worked his way through his struggles if he somehow managed to stay healthy.
I’d be willing to be that if a major league team gives Thames at bats in 2012 he will out hit Juan Rivera. He simply fell into the black hole that consumed Eric Davis, Daryl Ward, Andruw Jones, and Juan Uribe. You’d think the hole would have no more room.
If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.
You are betting a lot of people will outhit Rivera. I’m a little scared for your 2012 projection of him.

I strongly encourage everyone with access to their old baseball cards to every so often just look through them. I spent from a few minutes of looking at two random boxes.
Box 1 (Misc. cards mostly from the 80s and 90s) — I found a solid half-dozen cards of parents of Dodgers (or their farmhands), not even including Tony Gwynn. So many can’t-misses that missed. Gregg Olson is another college closer who closed in MLB. Acetate cards were kinda cool, but they overdid it in the mid-90s. Jose Uribe had already played in the majors (for the Cardinals!) when he became the ultimate PTBNL. Jerry Mumphrey. Cecilio Guante.
Box 2 (2003 Fleer Tradition) — Hank Blalock was still considered a prospect in 2003. Ray Lankford was a Padre. All four of the “leaders” of the 2002 Red Sox wore a Dodgers uniform. Jason Simontacchi and Josh Phelps had “banner seasons.” The dude in Moneyball looked more like David Justice than I remember. Travis Lee had 70 RBI one year. For the Phillies. Jung Bong.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

I don’t get all the Jennifer Aniston love and I never have. She’s pretty, but I don’t understand why guys go gaga over her.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
She's more than hot
I think she’s one of the most beautiful women in hollywood (what a dumb expression, but it works). I’ve watched Friends for a long time so her character as Rachel is really what swayed me because she seems like so much fun. Also she’s shown she can be dirty and funny in Horrible Bosses, which was pretty great.

To figure out a comp for this, I would use my infatuation with Jacklyn Smith of the original Charlie’s Angels. Except that Jen Aniston does have a personality, while Smith was somewhat vanilla. But I do think vintage Smith was more attractive than vintage Aniston.

2 more off the top of my head
Shannon Elizabeth and Jaime Pressly – both way hotter actresses than Aniston
I'm fine if you want to say anniston is the hottest thing that ever lived
Subjectively, I find SO many women so much more gorgeous. Don’t forget, Anniston has had a lot of work done, so its not like shes a natural beauty or anything. At least a chin job a nose job and some tox. AT LEAST. I prefer brunettes anyhow, which she is one naturally.

Pujols agreed to a backloaded deal — taking significantly less money in the first two years — to aid the Angels in their pursuit of free agent pitcher C.J. Wilson, baseball sources told ESPN.com.
Pujols will make a base salary of $12 million in 2012 and $16 million in 2013, said a source. His salary will gradually increase until it surpasses $30 million annually near the end of the deal.

Titans would be fun to see the posts between you and VegasBlues. :)
by silverwidow on Dec 31, 2011 10:07 AM PST up reply actions
I want the Titans for more reasons than just being a Titans fan. To get in the Titans will have to beat the Texans in Houston this week and then turn around and do it all over again. Playing the same team two weeks in a row will be tough for both teams to gameplan against.
This is the Texans first ever playoff game. Can you imagine what would happen if they were knocked out by the Titans? (For those that don’t watch football the Texans only exist because the Titans/Oilers left Houston back in the 90’s)
I’d honestly feel bad for Texans fans if we were the ones to knock them out of the playoffs. That would be one swift kick to the balls that I’d only ever wish on Ratbird or Steeler fans (Sorry Joe but my hatred of the Steelers comes from growing up an Oilers fan).
I honestly don’t like the Titans chances of beating the Texans twice in Houston though.
