The Dodgers play 16 of their 30 Cactus League games at Camelback Ranch. All times are 1:05pm local time unless otherwise noted (clocks spring forward on Sunday, March 11, but not in Arizona, so the day games on those first eight days are 12:05 p.m. PDT starts), and are of course subject to change. Tickets and more information can be found here.

In 2011, the Dodgers had 30 Cactus League games scheduled in 30 days, including one split-squad day and one day off. In 2012, the Dodgers have 30 games in 28 days, including three split-squad days and one off day.

The Dodgers open their regular season at Petco Park on Thursday, April 5 against the San Diego Padres.

I’m considering dropping the Thunder and picking up another team. I just can’t get behind em anymore. They just don’t do it for me.

And no, I’m not considering the Grizzlies.

it is a “road” game for the Dodgers, at Camelback

by Eric Stephen on Dec 5, 2011 11:31 AM PST up reply actions

So they have three games against the major league team formerly known as the White Sox as home games, but one on the road? That seems odd. Especially since they have more home games listed than roadies. My guess is that they are technically the road team for one of those games, but they listed is a home game, and forgot to do it for the other. Nobody goes to ST caring about who bats last.

Agreed OB12. I like our bp already as it is…and as limited as our funds are I don’t see us getting a better pitcher than Harang at this point. Unless of course a trade is made, which of course I wouldn’t be adversed to.

Rotation depth is a good thing. Just because you have Capuano and Harang doesn’t mean you won’t be getting a little Eveland and Eovaldi too. Billingsley, Kershaw or Lilly could easily get injured.

by OB12 on Dec 5, 2011 1:12 PM PST up reply actions

I like coming into the season with 5 capable starters and a couple potentially good younguns instead of relying on the younguns and not having a backup if they fail.

by court168627 on Dec 5, 2011 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

And Capuano especially could easily get injured. Like OB pointed out, we supposedly had a glut when adding Garland and Padilla last year.

I'm reading the earliest published baseball novel I've ever heard of

The Young Pitcher by Zane Grey, from 1911. Very interesting and only about 250 pages. About a college pitcher on the varsity team. Extreme amounts of bunting involved.

If MLB expanded and added two more teams (one to each league), which cities do you think would be most likely to get a team? I know I’ve heard Las Vegas thrown out there before, and pipe dreams about a team in Mexico City (which would be awesome, but unlikely, IMO), but off the top of my head New Orleans, Memphis, “Carolina” (Charlotte), and one of the other Texas cities (or maybe even Oklahoma) seem like possibilities…

Durham has a proud baseball history, and the Research Triangle area has almost as many people in it as Charlotte. I think Durham actually likes being a minor league city, it’s part of their identity that they wouldn’t want to lose.

Charlotte already has the Panthers and Bobcats. Raleigh supports the Hurricanes pretty well.

According to FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi, Aaron Harang’s deal with the Dodgers will be for two years.
The contract is expected to be finalized shortly. Harang, 33, posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 170 2/3 innings this past season for the Padres while earning $3.5 million on a one-year deal. No word yet on the financials of his agreement with Los Angeles.

by VegasBlues on Dec 5, 2011 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like poeple are paying too much attention to length of deal and not to a) the salary

b) the fact that there will be new ownership in place next off season who may say “Fuck these guys” and new GM in place who may say the same and the even more likely event that either Capuano or Harang could be hurt and useless in 2013 if not before. :-/

Doesn’t history show us that we never can assume we’ll have X # of pitchers locked in for this period of time, and shouldn’t assume any young ace pitchers (if someone like Zach Lee turns out that way) will be blocked.

What I don’t like as much is the thought that McCourt + Colletti continue to have to lay more burden on whoever the future ownership is. Hopefully these contracts are indeed drops in the bucket to them.

Obviously depends on whether Dodgers are contending in 2012, and of course whether Ned is still around, and when, etc.

And I agree, Humma, that is the one thing I am worried about — the finances of these deals add up when they are backloaded to make 2013 books tighter, even if new owner is Daddy Warbucks they may flinch at that, want to trade these guys and then find they can’t without eating most of the contract anyway.

If he takes the payroll in ’13 to 125 or 130 million or higher, sure, he has a lot of flexibility. But that requires him to open up the wallet.

Why does McCourt want Ned to sign guys for two years and complicate matters for ownership that will probably be chosen in April/May? I don’t see his angle, to give new owners as many options as possible by loading up the roster with veteran riffraff?

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 5, 2011 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

Because he probably wanted players that weren’t absolute bottom of the barrel shit quality and you have to give more than one year contracts to thsoe guys. Potential owners won’t really care about the 2013 season, they’re looking at the team as a long term investment.

by court168627 on Dec 5, 2011 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

I’d think they’d care very much about their first full season and the offseason beforehand to make a big first impression in the LA market with a flagship franchise like the Dodgers…you see Magic/Kasten, Cuban, whoever just biding time and wanting to punt 2013?

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 5, 2011 2:23 PM PST up reply actions

True.

But I think whenever you buy any billion dollar organization there’s going to be bad money in there somewhere. Between Cap, Ellis, Uribe, Guerrier, and whoever else you want to throw in there, the amount of bad investment over the course of the next two years is pretty negligible compared to the overall value of the team.

by court168627 on Dec 5, 2011 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

Why does McCourt want Ned to sign guys for two years and complicate matters for ownership that will probably be chosen in April/May?

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Ellis/Capuano/Harang are available on one year deals. They are available on two year deals.

Ned is signing these players to try to put a competitive team on the field in 2012. You can think that he is misguided or choosing the wrong guys, but that is what he is trying to do. The second year is the cost of doing business.

What screws the Dodgers is that the deals are backloaded, which kills 2013.

The Harang signing will put the 2013 Dodgers payroll up above 100 million. Holes left to fill include starting 1B, starting RF, three bench spots (OF/IF/C) and a couple of relievers.

Just to fill the voids, the payroll will have to increase or the new owner/GM will have to do salary dumps.

Well, yes, but still

That’s not even beginning to mention that the 2012 Dodgers are going to give up a shitload of HR. Capuano’s peripherals look a hell of a lot like Lilly’s (his fastball velocity is even similar), and Harang gave up 1.1 HR/9 in PETCO. Which translates to like 1.4 HR/9 in DS.

probably

Wilson’s got a much better K rate and HR rate but Buehrle has a really nice low walk rate. And 11 straight seasons of 200+ IP looks good too. I think he could age decently, but 3 yrs seems about right. Wilson for 6 yrs seems too long.

He’s 35 and has never made more then 2.3 million in one season. The baseball agents of old players loves Ned Colletti. I wonder if he and Barajas had the same agent.

So

Are we all just riding off Uribe for 2012 for being productive? I just refuse to believe he will have a repeat of 2011 in 2012. In my mind we should see an offensive line of .260/.310/.425 with some good 3B defense. Nothing earth shattering, but being a somewhat productive bat and a definite productive fielder will be a nice boost to the team.
