I’m considering dropping the Thunder and picking up another team. I just can’t get behind em anymore. They just don’t do it for me.
And no, I’m not considering the Grizzlies.
Okay – it is getting crowded but we still have room as we try to make inroads into the Southern region.

Is March 5th not at Camelback?

it is a “road” game for the Dodgers, at Camelback
by Eric Stephen on Dec 5, 2011 11:31 AM PST up reply actions
So they have three games against the major league team formerly known as the White Sox as home games, but one on the road? That seems odd. Especially since they have more home games listed than roadies. My guess is that they are technically the road team for one of those games, but they listed is a home game, and forgot to do it for the other. Nobody goes to ST caring about who bats last.

Plus, you know if those few remaining dollars don’t go to Harang they will go to some nothing bullpen arm. I’d rather sign Harang and push Eovaldi into a relief spot.
Rotation depth is a good thing. Just because you have Capuano and Harang doesn’t mean you won’t be getting a little Eveland and Eovaldi too. Billingsley, Kershaw or Lilly could easily get injured.
agreed.
I like coming into the season with 5 capable starters and a couple potentially good younguns instead of relying on the younguns and not having a backup if they fail.
With 5 starters signed, I think Eveland will get non-tendered. They can just sign him to a minor league deal if they want him back.
If it was just 2012, fine whatever, but screwing over 2013 sucks.

meh.
They needed another pitcher that could start and there’s not really much better out there. I’m ok with this. I think either him or Capuano should start out the season in the bullpen, though. Eovaldi deserves a shot as a starter.
Wouldn’t be unprecedented for Eoalid to work out of the pen this year then start next year. or start out of the pen and move to the rotation if someone struggles.
eventually, if he can't cut it.
but my philosophy is that good young pitchers should get a chance to start. obviously a good starter is more valuable than a good reliever.
no one is suggesting be made a reliever permanently, but there is something to be said for getting your feet wet in lower pressure situations
I would htink he would be better suited
to pitching in the minors and working on his offspeed stuff
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
he can be successful in the bullpen now, and work on his offspeed stuff with major league pitching coaches with major league resources.
We have so many young live arms that are ready for the bullpen

Out-of-the-blue question:
If MLB expanded and added two more teams (one to each league), which cities do you think would be most likely to get a team? I know I’ve heard Las Vegas thrown out there before, and pipe dreams about a team in Mexico City (which would be awesome, but unlikely, IMO), but off the top of my head New Orleans, Memphis, “Carolina” (Charlotte), and one of the other Texas cities (or maybe even Oklahoma) seem like possibilities…

Durham has a proud baseball history, and the Research Triangle area has almost as many people in it as Charlotte. I think Durham actually likes being a minor league city, it’s part of their identity that they wouldn’t want to lose.
Charlotte already has the Panthers and Bobcats. Raleigh supports the Hurricanes pretty well.

Harang to Dodgers
According to FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi, Aaron Harang’s deal with the Dodgers will be for two years.
The contract is expected to be finalized shortly. Harang, 33, posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 170 2/3 innings this past season for the Padres while earning $3.5 million on a one-year deal. No word yet on the financials of his agreement with Los Angeles.

So for at least two years, the following is penciled in:
Kershaw
Billz
Lilly
Capuano
Harang
Someone please help me control my excitement
Exactly!
I realize there are always injuries and DFAs, but signing all those guys through 2013 is basically saying either: We are not going to be competitive the next couple years or are expecting endlessly deep pockets who don’t mind having more dead money
Veteran back of the rotation arms are exactly what I think of when I imagine trade deadline commodities.
Right. Late season playoff push for a team with a depleted starting rotation. Those things still happen.
So fuck Rubby at this point? And pretty much blocking Eo and Webster for 2 years (aside from injuries)?
1 year deals for cap and harang, fine. 2 years? Dumb.

Uh, no one in the rotation is good enough to block a good pitcher. I doubt they got no trade contracts. If Rubby comes back healthy, EO and Webster progress they either get dealt for bats or the tired arms will take a seat for the new blood.

I feel like poeple are paying too much attention to length of deal and not to a) the salary
b) the fact that there will be new ownership in place next off season who may say “Fuck these guys” and new GM in place who may say the same and the even more likely event that either Capuano or Harang could be hurt and useless in 2013 if not before. :-/
Doesn’t history show us that we never can assume we’ll have X # of pitchers locked in for this period of time, and shouldn’t assume any young ace pitchers (if someone like Zach Lee turns out that way) will be blocked.
What I don’t like as much is the thought that McCourt + Colletti continue to have to lay more burden on whoever the future ownership is. Hopefully these contracts are indeed drops in the bucket to them.

Probably too much to ask for ALL of that, but I can definitely see some of that happening
Obviously depends on whether Dodgers are contending in 2012, and of course whether Ned is still around, and when, etc.
And I agree, Humma, that is the one thing I am worried about — the finances of these deals add up when they are backloaded to make 2013 books tighter, even if new owner is Daddy Warbucks they may flinch at that, want to trade these guys and then find they can’t without eating most of the contract anyway.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

I agree with this, but only to a point. Every $5 million salary he says fuck it to is still $5 million out of his pocket. He will be able to trade those guys but only by picking up the check.
If he takes the payroll in ’13 to 125 or 130 million or higher, sure, he has a lot of flexibility. But that requires him to open up the wallet.

JimBowdenESPNxm: Dodgers back-load another 2-year deal. Harang, Capuano and Ellis with intent new owners will be on the hook not McCourt
If “brilliant” baseball minds trade for Jeff Mathis, I’m not sure Ned is that much worse than anybody (and I am decidedly not a fan).
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
agreed.
Ned’s not great, but with the ownership situation he’s probably being forced into all sorts of moves that we don’t see.
I don’t think anyone is forcing him to give two year deals to crappy players. Sometimes the best move is to not do anything.
it's nice that you don't think that
but you have no idea what his boss is telling him to do.
Neither do you, since Ned was a tool before “McCourt started telling him what to do” I’m going with the assumption he felt 2010 was a win and is doing it again.

I’m just going to pretend we signed Uribe to a two-year deal this offseason. Makes things easier for me. If 2012-2013 is our window, I’m defenestrating immediately.
how no?
what spots will the new owner be able to fill next season besides Ethier’s?
ok.
thanks for answering the question and clarifying your position.
What's your position?
That the owner takes over the team early in the ‘12 season and sits on his/her hands for 2 years while playing out the string with Ned’s castoffs? Who the hell would do that?
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
what other choice do they have?
besides drop a shitload of players they’d have to pay for anyway or try to trade them all off?
Exactly, so why not give the new owners free reign to do what they want? Why does McCourt want Ned to sign guys for two years and complicate matters for ownership that will probably be chosen in April/May? I don’t see his angle, to give new owners as many options as possible by loading up the roster with veteran riffraff?
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
Because he probably wanted players that weren’t absolute bottom of the barrel shit quality and you have to give more than one year contracts to thsoe guys. Potential owners won’t really care about the 2013 season, they’re looking at the team as a long term investment.
I’d think they’d care very much about their first full season and the offseason beforehand to make a big first impression in the LA market with a flagship franchise like the Dodgers…you see Magic/Kasten, Cuban, whoever just biding time and wanting to punt 2013?
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
True.
But I think whenever you buy any billion dollar organization there’s going to be bad money in there somewhere. Between Cap, Ellis, Uribe, Guerrier, and whoever else you want to throw in there, the amount of bad investment over the course of the next two years is pretty negligible compared to the overall value of the team.
Why does McCourt want Ned to sign guys for two years and complicate matters for ownership that will probably be chosen in April/May?
I could be wrong, but I don’t think Ellis/Capuano/Harang are available on one year deals. They are available on two year deals.
Ned is signing these players to try to put a competitive team on the field in 2012. You can think that he is misguided or choosing the wrong guys, but that is what he is trying to do. The second year is the cost of doing business.
What screws the Dodgers is that the deals are backloaded, which kills 2013.
magnae clunes mihi placent, nec possum de hac re mentiri.

If you put together a team that should win 84 games and catch lightning in a bottle, you might just win 93 games, which should be enough to win the division. That’s Ned’s M.O.

Exactly, its not either or, its both. Wether it happens or not remains to be seen, but Lakers want both
The Lakers are reportedly prepared to make offers for Dwight Howard and/or Chris Paul.
Both players are backing their teams into a corner and they may be forced to move their superstars instead of losing them for nothing after the season. The Lakers are possibly willing to part ways with Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol, which could potentially land them both superstars. Brace yourselves for endless rumors until Paul or Howard are moved.
Dammit let me dream Phil!
I think the Lakers can end up with Howard, he wants to play in LA, we have a center, I could see that happening. I don’t see Paul coming to the Lakers. JMO

Luxury tax
Luxury tax and revenue sharing alone will cost the Lakers close to $100 mil (that’s with current salaries with max fines which takes a couple years to get to).
$100 mil out the door before you even start thinking about paying your payroll makes you think twice.
maybe a 3 way? 3 way was talking about with Bucks, since Orlando I guess rather have Bogut then Bynum. Maybe Bucks like Gasol instead? Anyways, just fun to read… But not like im really expecting anything to happen…. by the way I wouldnt deal Bynum for Paul if im not getting Howard in a seperate trade. Gasol’s too soft in the middle IMO.
I think Lakers can beat the Nets' offer for Howard

Buehrle should sign with either the Marlins or Nat’s. Amazing how much money the Marlins are throwing around, agents must be ecstatic

I think the money they’re paying Reyes was just revenue sharing money they’ve been hoarding for the last few years. They can pay Pujols with the half billion plus they got from Miami that’s being investigated by the SEC.

So which would be worse, committing 2 years of less money to Harang and Capuano, who are not as good as CJ Wilson (but he’s not that good) or tying up a ton more money + years on CJ Wilson?
Maybe they are both equally crap options, tbh.

The other has no power, some OB Skills, speed, plays 2nd,SS,3rd and all the outfield positions.

As IvDown said, we got Jamey Carroll back, but the one with the family pedigree.

If i was a role player in the Dodger organization, i’d want out as soon as possible.
I just dont understand why the team wouldnt give a cheap youngster the chance to be a utility player, rather than go pay a premium for it.
It’s kind of like me trying decide between a gourmet European sandwich for around $10, or a $3 sandwich, $1 chip, $1 drink, and $1 dessert. Then I still have money left over for tomorrow’s $3 sandwich and either chips or a drink.

So
Are we all just riding off Uribe for 2012 for being productive? I just refuse to believe he will have a repeat of 2011 in 2012. In my mind we should see an offensive line of .260/.310/.425 with some good 3B defense. Nothing earth shattering, but being a somewhat productive bat and a definite productive fielder will be a nice boost to the team.
