A guy like Jackson, and others, has to wait in line. Once the big fish sign, then their market can establish itself.
One year
You can do that?
It's not what you look like, when you're doin' what you're doin'
It's what you're doin' when you're doin' what you look like you're doin'!
At this point probably better to trade Axford and see if you can get K-Rod to take more years for less money.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
And unless they’re willing to roll the dice with Furcal Yunieski might be the best option left at short, dear lord the Brewers screwed this up.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
can't they cut K-Rod in ST and only pay him a fraction of the $13 mil?
With the shrinking market for closers there might not be a taker for Axford

Tim Kurkjian on Baseball Tonight just said Jimmy Rollins has agreed to re-sign with the Phillies. No terms known yet, but Kurkjian expected something like 3 years plus an option.
Question
To what extent is it in Pujols’ interest to sign with somebody tomorrow?
Clearly, he doesn’t have to sign with anybody tomorrow. He must only sign by, what, mid-February.
But it is likely in his interest to sign before then. This has been madness and it’s only been two days. If he draws this out, he might fuck it up, not to mention taking a PR hit for a Favre-esque “my contract IS the story” story.
So, to what extent is it in his interest to wrap this up tomorrow?

It seems like the teams in on Pujols — Cards, Marlins, and apparently Angels — kind of need to know fairly soon whether or not Pujols will occupy a huge portion of their budget. Seems like Marlins and/or Angels would want to move on to Plans B, C, D, and E if they can’t get Pujols so they’d like to know soon before those other dudes sign elsewhere.
Jebus
BNightengale: The Angels offer 10-year deal for at least $210m Wednesday for Pujols, joining #STLCards and mystery team in bidding war.
Heyman chimes in
Reports @BNightengale: angels bid about $210M for 10 yrs. Nice, but that’s about $10M less than miami, which is out.
Wonder if the supposed Dodger deal that's "dead"
was the rumored interest in Headley. SD probably asked for way too much.
@The26thman:
Appears that STL Jeff Luhnow, VP of Scouting & Player Dev has already told co-workers that he’ll be named the next GM of the Houston Astros.Bob Nightengale retweeted it, so looks true.
Yeah, apparently there was a tweet earlier too, I think by Luhnow himself, but it was quickly deleted.
Honestly, who would want that job?
I know it’s “one of 30 jobs” but, man, you have to do everything perfect for awhile just to get that team back to relevancy.
Probably helps to be somebody younger (I don’t know how old Luhnow is) with a long-term plan/vision…and some energy.
There were, what, four GM jobs available this offseason? Cubs, Angels, Orioles, and Astros?
Best job is Angels. They are in LA (I know, I know) and the closest to contending. You probably have a short leash — make something happen in two or maybe three years — but you have money to spend and you are close.
Next best job is the Cubs. Huge payroll, huge goodwill, and huge reward if you can make it happen, but also big spotlight. Maybe the Cubs got the right guy for that.
Orioles is the worst job. No one would take it so they got Dan Duquette.
Astros are somewhere in the middle. We know the costs: that is a long road. But the benefit is that you can make the team entirely in your image. You have free rein to do whatever you want to do. And I’d guess — and this is just a guess — that the new owners know the score and you have several years with which to try to make it happen.

Interesting stuff from Gurnick
Colletti hinted that a minor trade could occur involving a player on his 40-man roster, which likely would create room for the addition of a right-handed reliever that he still seeks.
He said he would not take any Rule 5 players for the Dodgers, but left open the possibility of making a selection and flipping the player to another club.
Good piece by Howard Beck of the New York Times on what it was like to be a basketball reporter covering the lockout negotiations.
To be a reporter covering the N.B.A. lockout was to enter a parallel universe, where normalcy was suspended, truth was pliable and time had no meaning. Absurdity reigned.Reminds me a LOT of covering the final days of the legislative session. Long hours, bored reporters, only Twitter to keep you company… fighting for electrical outlets.
.
There were news conferences at 4 in the morning, Betty White sightings, a Gregg Popovich jog-by and a cameo by former President Bill Clinton.

Bargaining sessions stretched for 15 hours while we stood on sidewalks or loitered in chilled lobbies, or sweated in stuffy conference rooms with bad wallpaper.

Los Angeles Dodgers star James Loney was arrested while being hospitalized in L.A. last month … after allegedly smashing his Maserati into THREE other cars … and then spitting at a cop … this according to a police report obtained by TMZ.
.
Loney — who plays 1st base for the Dodgers — was arrested on November 14th … because cops say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs after he swerved into a Toyota around 6pm … and then careened into a Mercedes and a Mini.
.
According to the report, when cops first arrived to the scene … Loney told one of the officers, “The bitch hit me from behind.”
.
Cops say Loney appeared to be “restless, unsteady, aggressive and irritable” … and he “exhibited eyelid tremors and his shirt was soiled and moist from perspiration, from his armpits down to his waistline.”
.
Cops say when officers asked Loney what day it was … he replied, “7/15 and Saturday” — when in fact, it was 11/14 and Monday.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

It Sounds Like The "Manic" Phase of Bipolar Disorder
Haven’t we being hearing for years that Loney is spacey - always making off the-wall comments, doing off-the-wall things? Joe Torre used to talk about him like he’s a “special needs” child. Given that Loney wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he had that incident with the police, a mental disorder that has either been undiagnosed or kept quiet sounds probable.

How many numbers does Tamin have to crunch
To know that resigning Macdougal to anything much more than last year is a bad idea?
Seems pretty obvious…
If this Loney report is true
I wonder if
1.) the Dodgers are handling it behind the scenes
2.) they have determined it’s not enough of a concern to find a replacement for Loney, since they have loaded up on utility players
or 3.) their contingency plan in case they sense some “emotional problems” and that he’s not worth a raise is Sands to 1B platooning with Kennedy.

Pujols-Angels brilliant! DH for last few years, Angels are a young team that will compete for years and years. Pujols gets away from crazy Cardinal fans. Trumbo to 3b? Morales? details to be worked out.
Dan Haren and Santana
Are both FAs next year, as is their entire middle part of their infield. I just don’t know if Angels can support a $140M+ payroll for the next 5-6 years
Anaheim
Only seats 43K, so unless he raises tix prices, there is not a lot more to be raised there. Moreno could artner with Fox on a RSN but their ratings and viewership is less than the Dodgers and let’s face it Pujols isn’t exactly a huge media star in terms of marketing outside of baseball fans.
What does do is allow the Angels to play Trout in the minors all year (until someone gets hurt) and target 2013 as the year they can start controlling costs.
If the Angels are getting
$150M a year in new TV money then I can only imagine how much more the Dodgers would get. Though I find it impossible to believe they would get that.
Moreno is going to have to raise ticket prices at some point too.
I thought it was said if Dodgers play the game right, they could get 300 million a year in new TV deal?
I know nothing about this
but I say negotiate without fear whoever you are future rich fuck owner of my favorite team

I think it was in a NY post column, and I know word is NY Post is full of shit. But it was linked on DT, and I think Weisman has a similar article as well. Basically it was showing how important keeping the Dodgers is to FOX, because if they lose them, they’ll have to cut Prime Tickets, and thats hundreds of millions in revenue lost alone. But Time Warner also stands to gain a ton by getting the TV contract. So if Dodgers play their cards right in the battle between TW and Fox, they could end up with close to 300 mil per season, We shall see;
No
Freaking way that is double the Lakers and no local broadcaster could make up over 2M per game, that is unless you want your cable/satellite rates to double
like I said, I don’t know the math of that industry so I can’t really say
but scarcity is a key to value and the Dodgers are not replaceable – you either have them or you don’t

I wonder
About that, now in Japan, they broadcast MLB games with Japanese players (I saw some Dodger games there because Kuroda was pitching) but I don’t think that makes them that much money.
because I don’t know the financials of the business, I don’t know if that is a bargain or not
market rates for media properties have taken huge jumps in my lifetime
I don’t know what it is worth, but if I was making the deal, I would walk several times before I said yes

Pujols is an old looking 31 for sure. I’m not saying he’s lied about his age all these years, I just wonder if his body will catch up to how old his face looks and breakdown in a few years. But, that being said, I hate that the Dodgers aren’t even in the Free agent conversation right now.

I just think for Pujols to leave the team he’s been with his whole career, winning championships with, just to get the most money possible at his age is a crime in todays game. I never would of thought resigning Kemp would be so painless, and Pujols would leave the Cards.

Joe, I just like loyalty, loyalty is big to me in sports. I just dont like players leaving to whomever offers the highest dollar, and showing no loyalty to that team that gave them their start, treated him well, and he’s also a world champion with. I mean if Angels far and away outbid the Cards, then I could see…. but if were talking like 10 million more total or so, show some loyalty Pujols… just my opinion though.
The Cardinals viciously underpaid Pujols the last 10 years. If they aren’t willing to reinvest those savings screw them.

Just like the Tigers were a lock for a championship the year after they traded for Miggy and Dontrelle. The Angels will be good, but I don’t see them as better than the Phillies last year who clearly didn’t win a championship.

I think the Cardinals played this perfectly. Solid offers leaked to the press that were just low enough that Pujols couldn’t accept them. High enough so they can paint him as greedy on his way out of town. Got all his best years at very team friendly prices. Now they can move on with their franchise without the risk of being bogged down by an albatross in a few years.

They won. They got the guy nobody thought they would get. Impossible [for me] to be anything but for the move. The only player I’ve ever seen in person who looks exactly like what the statue of him will someday look like. Also the reason why I started disliking Dodger fans at games: chanting “Pujols sucks” as he hit two homers to send us home from the playoffs. He’s the Platonic ideal of a hitter.
Buster's got a theory
Buster_ESPN: My own theory: the prospect of a Magic Johnson-led Dodger franchise jolted the Angels into changing their budget in a big, big way.
So Magic Johnson will be a minority stakeholder in a group that’s among 10 to 20 other groups who may own the Dodgers at some point and that directly caused Arte Moreno to commit $300 million. Got it, Buster. That’s some serious wall-directed shit flinging.

Fucking Angels.
I’ve said over the last year or two that Pujols likely wasn’t going to back to St. Louis and that L.A was an option. Didn’t think it would go down like this, but I’m not surprised.
I always thought he would stay in STL until the Carpenter injury, which seemed to raise some doubts. Then the Marlins shook everything up. Question: Does he sign with the Angels if the Marlins aren’t bidders?
I know he really liked the Angels. Lozano is friends with a good friend of mine (who is a huge Cardinals fan) and he has been bracing him for Albert leaving for over a year.
funny thing is I care about the Angels as much now as I did yesterday
