Question

To what extent is it in Pujols’ interest to sign with somebody tomorrow?

Clearly, he doesn’t have to sign with anybody tomorrow. He must only sign by, what, mid-February.

But it is likely in his interest to sign before then. This has been madness and it’s only been two days. If he draws this out, he might fuck it up, not to mention taking a PR hit for a Favre-esque “my contract IS the story” story.

So, to what extent is it in his interest to wrap this up tomorrow?

quis enim, consortes mei, non fateatur

by Humma Kavula on Dec 7, 2011 9:25 PM PST reply actions

The only way this would be like Favre is if Pujols said he was going to sign one day, then changed his mind. Then did so again.

Then sent a picture of his dong to Buster Olney.

by fbihop on Dec 7, 2011 9:28 PM PST up reply actions

It seems like the teams in on Pujols — Cards, Marlins, and apparently Angels — kind of need to know fairly soon whether or not Pujols will occupy a huge portion of their budget. Seems like Marlins and/or Angels would want to move on to Plans B, C, D, and E if they can’t get Pujols so they’d like to know soon before those other dudes sign elsewhere.

When your team has already hit rock bottom then anything you do can only make things better (theoretically). So as long as things do get a little better you look great in others eyes.

I think it’s an ideal situation for someone who is looking to make a name for himself.

by VegasBlues on Dec 7, 2011 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

There were, what, four GM jobs available this offseason? Cubs, Angels, Orioles, and Astros?

Best job is Angels. They are in LA (I know, I know) and the closest to contending. You probably have a short leash — make something happen in two or maybe three years — but you have money to spend and you are close.

Next best job is the Cubs. Huge payroll, huge goodwill, and huge reward if you can make it happen, but also big spotlight. Maybe the Cubs got the right guy for that.

Orioles is the worst job. No one would take it so they got Dan Duquette.

Astros are somewhere in the middle. We know the costs: that is a long road. But the benefit is that you can make the team entirely in your image. You have free rein to do whatever you want to do. And I’d guess — and this is just a guess — that the new owners know the score and you have several years with which to try to make it happen.

Interesting stuff from Gurnick

link

Colletti hinted that a minor trade could occur involving a player on his 40-man roster, which likely would create room for the addition of a right-handed reliever that he still seeks.

He said he would not take any Rule 5 players for the Dodgers, but left open the possibility of making a selection and flipping the player to another club.

by silverwidow on Dec 7, 2011 9:51 PM PST reply actions

I think it is fair to say that Headley would not qualify as a minor trade.

Good piece by Howard Beck of the New York Times on what it was like to be a basketball reporter covering the lockout negotiations.

To be a reporter covering the N.B.A. lockout was to enter a parallel universe, where normalcy was suspended, truth was pliable and time had no meaning. Absurdity reigned.
.
There were news conferences at 4 in the morning, Betty White sightings, a Gregg Popovich jog-by and a cameo by former President Bill Clinton.
.
Bargaining sessions stretched for 15 hours while we stood on sidewalks or loitered in chilled lobbies, or sweated in stuffy conference rooms with bad wallpaper.
Reminds me a LOT of covering the final days of the legislative session. Long hours, bored reporters, only Twitter to keep you company… fighting for electrical outlets.

Los Angeles Dodgers star James Loney was arrested while being hospitalized in L.A. last month … after allegedly smashing his Maserati into THREE other cars … and then spitting at a cop … this according to a police report obtained by TMZ.
.
Loney — who plays 1st base for the Dodgers — was arrested on November 14th … because cops say he appeared to be under the influence of drugs after he swerved into a Toyota around 6pm … and then careened into a Mercedes and a Mini.
.
According to the report, when cops first arrived to the scene … Loney told one of the officers, “The bitch hit me from behind.”
.
Cops say Loney appeared to be “restless, unsteady, aggressive and irritable” … and he “exhibited eyelid tremors and his shirt was soiled and moist from perspiration, from his armpits down to his waistline.”
.
Cops say when officers asked Loney what day it was … he replied, “7/15 and Saturday” — when in fact, it was 11/14 and Monday.

It Sounds Like The "Manic" Phase of Bipolar Disorder

Haven’t we being hearing for years that Loney is spacey - always making off the-wall comments, doing off-the-wall things? Joe Torre used to talk about him like he’s a “special needs” child. Given that Loney wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he had that incident with the police, a mental disorder that has either been undiagnosed or kept quiet sounds probable.

According to the report, when cops first arrived to the scene … Loney told one of the officers, “The bitch hit me from behind.”

How many numbers does Tamin have to crunch

To know that resigning Macdougal to anything much more than last year is a bad idea?

Seems pretty obvious…

by BFDC on Dec 8, 2011 6:36 AM PST reply actions

If this Loney report is true

I wonder if

1.) the Dodgers are handling it behind the scenes

2.) they have determined it’s not enough of a concern to find a replacement for Loney, since they have loaded up on utility players

or 3.) their contingency plan in case they sense some “emotional problems” and that he’s not worth a raise is Sands to 1B platooning with Kennedy.

no doubt they should

I wonder if Prince would’ve been receptive to a Ned Special fat 2 or 3 year deal…if they cut Loney and didn’t sign some of this riff raff they could have made a serious run at it. A short deal would enable Prince to reassess the market in a few years while still being good.

Anaheim

Only seats 43K, so unless he raises tix prices, there is not a lot more to be raised there. Moreno could artner with Fox on a RSN but their ratings and viewership is less than the Dodgers and let’s face it Pujols isn’t exactly a huge media star in terms of marketing outside of baseball fans.

What does do is allow the Angels to play Trout in the minors all year (until someone gets hurt) and target 2013 as the year they can start controlling costs.

I think it was in a NY post column, and I know word is NY Post is full of shit. But it was linked on DT, and I think Weisman has a similar article as well. Basically it was showing how important keeping the Dodgers is to FOX, because if they lose them, they’ll have to cut Prime Tickets, and thats hundreds of millions in revenue lost alone. But Time Warner also stands to gain a ton by getting the TV contract. So if Dodgers play their cards right in the battle between TW and Fox, they could end up with close to 300 mil per season, We shall see;

I think the Cardinals played this perfectly. Solid offers leaked to the press that were just low enough that Pujols couldn’t accept them. High enough so they can paint him as greedy on his way out of town. Got all his best years at very team friendly prices. Now they can move on with their franchise without the risk of being bogged down by an albatross in a few years.

They won. They got the guy nobody thought they would get. Impossible [for me] to be anything but for the move. The only player I’ve ever seen in person who looks exactly like what the statue of him will someday look like. Also the reason why I started disliking Dodger fans at games: chanting “Pujols sucks” as he hit two homers to send us home from the playoffs. He’s the Platonic ideal of a hitter.

by kinbote on Dec 8, 2011 8:36 AM PST up reply actions

Buster's got a theory

Buster_ESPN: My own theory: the prospect of a Magic Johnson-led Dodger franchise jolted the Angels into changing their budget in a big, big way.

they’ve been played!

So Magic Johnson will be a minority stakeholder in a group that’s among 10 to 20 other groups who may own the Dodgers at some point and that directly caused Arte Moreno to commit $300 million. Got it, Buster. That’s some serious wall-directed shit flinging.

I always thought he would stay in STL until the Carpenter injury, which seemed to raise some doubts. Then the Marlins shook everything up. Question: Does he sign with the Angels if the Marlins aren’t bidders?
