Dana Eveland To Baltimore: Dodgers Go To Jarret, Looking For Diamond In Rough

Dana Eveland is reportedly now an Oriole.

With just over three years service time, Dana Eveland is arbitration eligible this winter. The Dodgers won't be the ones going to any hearing with Eveland, though. The Dodgers have reportedly traded Eveland to the Baltimore Orioles for minor left-handed league pitcher Jarret Martin and outfielder Tyler Henson, per Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. and Britt Ghiroli of MLB.com.

Eveland, 28, was a candidate to be non-tendered on Monday, December 12, the deadline to tender contracts to pre-free agency players. And that was before the Dodgers signed Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang (though Harang is not yet official), giving the Dodgers five starters signed through 2013 with Nathan Eovaldi, Rubby De La Rosa, and Allen Webster waiting in the wings.

After excelling in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, Eveland was called up in September and had a nice run of five starts with the Dodgers. Overall he was 3-2 with a 3.03 ERA with the Dodgers, including 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA on the road and 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA at Dodger Stadium.

Martin, 22, was 5-12 with a 4.96 ERA in 31 games, including 18 starts for Class A Delmarva in the South Atlantic League in 2011. He was an 18th round selection in the 2009 draft by Baltimore. In two minor league seasons, Martin has walked 5.9 batters per nine innings while striking out 8.7 batters per nine innings, completing the lefty-righty set of Wild Martins with Ethan Martin, who is two months older than Jarret.

Henson, who turns 24 on December 15, hit .247/.313/.321 in Triple A in 2011. He has played mostly the corner outfield spots in the last two years, but has also mixed in time at third base, with as many as 68 games at third as recently as 2009. He also has played shortstop, but only a few games since 2007.

This move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the Dodgers, who have yet to make the Harang signing official.

I guess if there were no plans to expand payroll at all and if the contracts weren’t backloaded into 2015 this would be a problem but it’s not. He’s just trying to show that he’s smarter than everyone else by saying that Pujols won’t even help them now.

Its only in the case they buy the team or become equity partners and since that is unlikely it probably wasn’t even argued over.

by BFDC on Dec 8, 2011 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

Was this contract signed when Fox owned the team?

by vadodger on Dec 8, 2011 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

So they were just negogiating with themselves.

by vadodger on Dec 8, 2011 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

I sure hope Time Warner, Comcast, or ESPN are NOT equity partners anyways.

You know, if I could have picked two guys for the Angels to sign that would excite Angels fans but bury the team, it might have been Wilson and Pujols. Not only is Albert out of the NL and out of our hair, he’s going to bog down our regional rival with a ridiculous contract. My day could only get better if they sign Beltran and Aramis to 3 year deals

Honestly

I was 8 years old the last time we won the World Series, which deluded me at a young age into thinking that we would always win or at least contend. If the Angels go all-in and win one World Series in the next 5 years and suck the next five, I would take that in a heartbeat. I remember when the Jacksonville Five were on the cusp of their debuts, I was salivating at the thought of an early-2000s Yankee team, but now with only Billz and Loney left (on tenuous ground at that), the specter of the mid-2000s Indians looms above.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’ve gotten used to dying with this team every season, so I wouldn’t mind management saying we’re going all out for a championship now.

this coming from the man who wants us to sign Manny Ramirez. :)

Didn’t someone say a couple days ago “they should announce it immediately after the Pujols signing just to bury it”?

2 years? not 3? dear lord please not 3

It's "just" 2 years

plus vesting option.

No vest please.

League-mandated RH innings-eater contract for Ned. I expect him to be better than Garland.

Dodgers need Belisario to come back so they can have the ugliest staff in baseball

with Harang, Lindblom and Ol’ Pumpkinhead.

Just sayin

So if we didn’t sign Capuano, Harang, and Ellis, we could have signed C.J Wilson right?

Fuck this. Can we at least get Kendry please, come on Angels.

Doesn't appear

McCourt is going past two years for any FA this year. “Could be” something to do with having the team up for sale.

Deal isn't *that* bad. Too bad it's not just the 2012 part, though.
RT @dylanohernandez: Harang’s deal w/ Dodgers official. $3M in 2012, $7M in 2013. $2 MM buyout for vesting option in 2014.

I don't claim to know anything about anything

Least of all about baseball, but good God, there have been some terrible contracts handed out this offseason.
