Eugenio Velez made this season so memorable

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

Dan Gilbert is a puke

But if Dwight Howard wanted to play in NJ all along, what kind of lack of foresight would that be on the Lakers’ part?

They’d be left with virtually no size. Did they have a backup plan to address the frontcourt? Lakers might be better off playing with the roster that won 2 rings.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

I think the Howard report

Might be in reaction to the veto

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 9, 2011 6:29 AM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

Well

didn’t seem like it, Howard said through his reps that he preferred NJ and a deal could happen today. Can’t be blocked because the Magic aren’t owned by the league.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

Doesn’t the league have to approve all trades?

by G.Scott on Dec 9, 2011 7:34 AM PST up reply actions

There's much less venom toward the Nets than Lakers

I guess owners are tired of the Lakers getting great players. That’s what it comes down to.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 9, 2011 7:37 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

They should be happy. Good lakers means higher national revenues and money in their pockets when they sell out the games the lakers visit. If they want those players to come play 41 games instead of 2 they should pay them.

by G.Scott on Dec 9, 2011 8:00 AM PST up reply actions

pay them

And actually build a team the smart way so you can compete

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 9, 2011 8:05 AM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

well yeah, and know that Joe Johnson isn’t a max contract player

by G.Scott on Dec 9, 2011 8:19 AM PST up reply actions

I think that’s what I’m saying :)

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 9, 2011 8:22 AM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

But

What can you do if your best player isn’t a max player but you don’t have space or may not be an attractive destination for free agents?

by bhsportsguy on Dec 9, 2011 8:25 AM PST up reply actions

you can be the TB Rays of the NBA

bottom line, you can’t legislate intelligence or shrewd management in sports, just like the management, or else you have the NBA dictating where players can play.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 9, 2011 8:31 AM PST up reply actions

You

Cannot be the Tampa Bay Rays in the NBA, you only have two rounds to pick players, you have a salary cap and trades have to match salaries.

And let’s say you get fortunate and get two or three really good players, you can’t sign them to low vaue extensions because their first 3 years are set by the CBA and then they know what the Max potential lis for their deal.

The NBA and MLB are fundamentally different in how the league rules and finances are handled.

by bhsportsguy on Dec 9, 2011 8:37 AM PST up reply actions

don’t they also have a salary floor?

by G.Scott on Dec 9, 2011 8:43 AM PST up reply actions

the owners bought into the system, stop crying

they know the system, they know stars are driven to big markets. The bottom line is that they didn’t really address their business model in the last CBA but now they’re crying about it.

What they really should do is contract some teams in this new normal of stagnant growth, but they are living in a false paradigm where everyone wants to have the same chance to profit and compete in the NBA. You can’t legislate that, period.

The NBA is a third-rate league. You have to let free agents be free and determine where they want to go, and if they don’t want to go to your team, make it attractive enough that they do.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 9, 2011 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

Do you think that Joe Johnson not being a max player has hampered the progress of the Atlanta Hawks?

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

No

I think Hawks have been stuck in that middle ground where you can’t draft a mega star player nor be an attractive alternative for free agents.

by bhsportsguy on Dec 9, 2011 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

Right, so you spend the max on the guy who will play for you. He may not be a “max” but he’s a damn good one.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 8:30 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed. Love Joe Johnson. This isn’t Rashard Lewis type contract.

I think a lot of it is that Joe Johnson ended up being paid more than any of the free agents from that summer (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Dirk) but that’s just a result of the salary system where older guys have a higher “max” ceiling.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 8:34 AM PST up reply actions

i’d agree with this if he were a PG (or had any kind of ball handling/playmaking skills) or a dominant PF/C. Not a spot up shooter

Dave Miller of 710 ESPN

said that Lakers have a plan for a PF, Bynum would stay. World Peace at SF. That’s not a title contender, but I’d love to build the Lakers around Paul.

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 9, 2011 6:32 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

seriously

Are the small market owners going to complain every time the big market teams try to improve?

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 9, 2011 6:37 AM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

ESPN reported

That it might be payback because Paul was the only star in CBA negotiations, so it might be petty maneuvers to keep him in NO for now.

These small owners are also not doing the Hornets any favors. They hired Demps and others to run the team, then when they engineer a quality trade they block it?

"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."

by Pure Azure on Dec 9, 2011 6:44 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

exactly

This does nothing but satisfy there egos. I heard Dell Demps had to be talked out of resigning because he was so angry.

Dwight

Knows that he makes the most money on the team he plays for in 2011. So if he were in LA playing with Paul and Kobe, he would have as great an incentive he coud want for signing a max extension.

I had heard the same. A lot of people in Portland were thinking that there’s no need to amnesty him now, why not give him the year to see how the knee holds up and they amnesty him next year (if that’s the way the decision goes.) Clearly the injury is really bad. That really sucks.

Will be hard to be a bus league with Hawaii in it

though it’s a pretty bus ride I hear (lots of marine life seen on the way).

But quality wise, it’s nice to have SDSU and I think Hawaii will add a little cred too (though not as much as bringing back UNLV or something)

He was five years old when we adopted him. A total wreck due to abuse but the sweetest dog ever (and I’m not a dog guy). He was at the old spectrum of adopted greyhound ages, which meant he must’ve been successful as a racer. (We traced his tattoo to figure out his lineage—he ended his “career” in Mexico.) We let him run a bunch of times at greyhound functions and he was smoking fast. They are called 45 mph couch potatoes for a reason.

To me it’s more of an organizational philosophy question. We simply don’t prioritize locking up young players (whether this is good or bad is another issue). I know it takes two to tango, but if we had R. Martin and Loney locked up long-term at least we wouldn’t be dumpster diving like we are now.

Maybe Billingsley

Moore was #35 prospect by BA heading into 2010, then #15 heading into 2011. He is either #2 or #3 now, depending on how Mike Trout is classified.

Billingsley was #19 heading into 2005, and #7 heading into 2006.

The roughly equivalent time for the Dodgers would have been to do it after Billingsley’s 90 innings in 2006.

They did, but in the end the Grizzlies got Marc Gasol and I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who would not trade Pau Gasol for Marc right now. Kind of amazing how different skills sets the two brothers have. To bad they will not play on the same team.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 8:39 AM PST up reply actions

No more of a fleece than Kevin McHale sending Kevin Garnett to Boston. And the karmic payback was the Memphis Grizzlies lasting two games longer than the Lakers in last year’s playoffs. :)

by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 8:40 AM PST up reply actions

Memphis rebuilt their entire team with that trade. They got a franchise center in Marc Gasol and the cap space which allowed them to trade for Zach Randolph. As a result, 2010-2011 was the best year in Grizzlies history. By comparison, the Gasol led Grizzlies never won a playoff game.

Great replies

I guess it’s one of those trades that looks better with time.

by kinbote on Dec 9, 2011 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

But to Dan Gilbert’s point, the Lakers took on a bunch of salary in the Memphis deal, but they save money under this trade (though they are clearly giving up more in talent, in Gasol and Odom). But Gilbert in his rant completely ignored what the deal meant for New Orleans and Houston.

I think a deal can get done if the Lakers sweeten the pot a little, maybe add a draft pick or take back another salaried player in the deal.

But I hope the players revolt over this.

But the team with TMac and Yao in the playoffs (2008?) was the best team the Rockets had since Hakeem. They haven’t done much since then.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 8:59 AM PST up reply actions

Okay, I just remember them as being extremely over achieving considering they had Yao’s contract but no Yao year after year. But I didn’t pay that much attention.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 9:00 AM PST up reply actions

The last time the Rockets won a playoff series, Yao played in the post-season (beat the Blazers.) Yao got injured in the second round and the team was bounced. The following year, Yao missed the entire season and the Rockets were decent (42-40) but missed the playoffs. Missed the playoffs again last season and seemed to go into rebuild mode.

So they probably over-acheived the past two years with Yao’s contract on the books but unable to play, but in the West they were still unable to make the post-season.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 9:05 AM PST up reply actions

I’ll try not to be a complete Grizzlies honk here, but that Memphis team last year was better than any of the Morey Rockets teams. And that was completely put together by Wallace (Bill Simmons punching bag) the GM of the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies also traded with the Rockets last year at the deadline. Thabeet and a pick for Shane Battier (the perfect player for a playoff run.)

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 8:48 AM PST up reply actions

The more I look at Eo’s advanced stats the less I like him. Since Minor League Central got pitch data I’ve paid a lot of attention to how many swings and misses a pitcher can induce and Eo wasn’t all that amazing at in compared to his overall strike out rate. Webster, Withrow, Archer, and many others were better at missing bats than he was.

That and a lot of Eo’s success was based on an unnaturally low home run rate. Eo’s slightly above average at inducing ground balls but his home runs were not matching. Since he doesn’t seem like he has the stuff to constantly induce soft contact I don’t think that will last in the bigs.

I haven’t actually studied any of this and for all I know swings and misses might not matter at all, but these kind of things could help explain why Eo dominated the Southern League and looked so unnotable on the Dodgers.

Bell is a former Miss Michigan USA but is most notable for her assault on Charlie earlier this year. The next date to watch this offseason is Monday, as the deadline to tender contracts to players is 9 p.m. PST. The Dodgers have five players eligible for salary arbitration: Andre Ethier, Hong-Chih Kuo, James Loney, Tony Gwynn Jr., and Clayton Kershaw.

Safe to say if Kuo has not signed a contract by Monday at 09:00PM he is good bye?

Is Gwynn the only question mark? and given his probable price it would be a shame to lose him. You would think they would easily be able to tender him, make a deal and then trade him if they can’t afford him. Wouldn’t you?

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 10:00 AM PST reply actions

The big market and money teams usually always get or sign the top players in the world correct? There is nothing done to help smaller market teams succeed, or any profit sharing, or create league parity right? However soccer outside the US is still the biggest sport in the world, and small teams still make money, and nobody stops watching and isnt losing any kind of fan support world wide??

There is no salary cap presumably because there are several different leagues with similar high level competitives (La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, etc.) So you’d have to organize some sort of world-wide salary cap which seems…impossible.

Also, soccer revenue sharing is a complete joke. Barcelona and Real arranged it so those two teams alone keep 75% of the revenues. It’s crazy. They don’t even pretend to be fair.

Also, if you want a free market like in Europe, remove the restrictions from where NBA teams can be located. The Premier League has half the league in London, the Argentine League has like 75% of the league located in Buenos Aires. The Lakers can’t have it both ways by keeping teams (like the Kings) out of their market and then asking for a free market when it comes to salaries.

If the market was free, you’d have 4 teams in LA, 5 in NY, 3 in Chicago, etc.

that made me LOL and I'm a Laker fan

(even though I still think the NBA decision is reckless and dangerous that has implications beyond the Lakers, who long term would have been helped by trade but short term would have issues) and it screws over the Hornets, which you’d think they wouldn’t want to do, and sets a bad precedent. Is NY okay or also too wealthy? New Jersey is okay. But what about…? My assumption is this trade is eventually gonna happen after all the terrible PR and the pandora’s box it opens up.

Is anyone really going to like Paul in NO this season? Is anyone going to buy any Paul jerseys or merchandise knowing he is gone after 66 games? What value does Paul have left in NO now? and how does it help the Hornets or the NBA for Hornets to get nothing?

I think the company line

is that NO gets OK but not marketable players AND no salary relief, thus making them less attractive to potential buyers. But why let all those league executives work under the assumption that Paul was available?

They wasted all that time to have the deal vetoed because Cuban, Gilbert, and some other twits felt betrayed by “business as usual” when they just ratified the CBA? Bad leadership. Bad league.

Maybe the trade being rejected might turn out for the best if Lakers can still maybe get a Baron Davis or something out of it in the end. No Chris Paul, but not losing Gasol or Odom either. Though Stein said he thinks Lakers will still move Odom now, because Odom is just too sensitive a guy for the Lakers to move forward with now.

Baron Davis sucks balls

by BFDC on Dec 9, 2011 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

Davis is still a good player, and IMO, would play better then he has been of late if on a contending team that he is happy being on.

Maybe, he’s pretty damn lazy though

by BFDC on Dec 9, 2011 11:51 AM PST up reply actions

FWIW

His first year in LA was one of the worst seasons I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t stand Baron. Then, he actually picked it up. His second year was SO much better and the 3rd year (before he was traded) he was the perfect PG to play with Blake (except for the fact that he can’t hit a jumper.) He throws a sick alley-oop and opposing defenses were so worried about ending up on posters, Baron was able to dribble right to the basket and simply lay it in. The guy loved playing with Griffin.

Interestingly, the rumors that came out after he was traded was that Gordon hated playing with him. I assume Blake and DJ loved playign with him.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

yeah and maybe im wrong but I think that 1st year was because he was unhappy because he came thinking Brand was on board…. I wouldnt be surprised if Paul has a off season this year as well. IMO players that arent happy wont give it their all day in and day out for most part.

by uschris0304 on Dec 9, 2011 11:56 AM PST up reply actions

He supposedly hated Dunleavy and the team really sucked (save the month of December after they traded for Zbo and Randolph, Camby and Baron were all healhty at the same time.) He also pulled an Andruw Jones and showed up way out of shape.

I think they have to see what they can get for the pick. If they can get a boatload for just moving down in the top 5-10, they might be able to get Barkley (I am biased here) and fill other needs.

I thought the problem was

(from what I’d been hearing this week from various sources, not just from Archie but who knows if true) is that Manning and Luck won’t co-exist very well, even though nothing personal between them. i.e., Luck should start pretty early and Manning doesn’t want to feel someone breathing down his, er, neck. Not sure about how much is true but read that in several places this past week.

David Stern
Since the NBA purchased the New Orleans Hornets, final responsibility for significant management decisions lies with the Commissioner’s Office in consultation with team chairman Jac Sperling. All decisions are made on the basis of what is in the best interests of the Hornets. In the case of the trade proposal that was made to the Hornets for Chris Paul, we decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade.

Dan Haren $12,750,000
Jered Weaver $14,000,000

Hisanori Takahashi $4,200,000
Maicer Izturis $3,800,000
Chris Iannetta $3,550,000
LaTroy Hawkins $3,000,000
Total: $118 million

Plus $2.5 million buyout to Scott Kazmir = $120.5 million

Plus Pujols…let’s say $25m = $145.5 million.

And arb raises for:
Kendrick ($3.3 million last year)
Aybar ($3m)
Callaspo ($2m)
Jerome Williams (chump change last year)

That’s 17 players for ~$157-160m or so, plus they have a decision to make on Kendrys Morales (arb eligible, made $2.975m last year)

Round out the roster with 8 players near $500k and you are at $160-165m.

Fox has also asked for a 14-day stay. I don’t know whether, if that’s granted, it would also delay this clause for 14 days and so give them until Jan. 28, or if that’s just to give them time to appeal but otherwise sticks to the original 45-day schedule beginning Nov. 30.

One of the lawyers (for Dodgers, I thin k) has suggested that during this period they could also continue negotiations with Fox under arbitration to try to reach a mutual agreement.

by berkowit28 on Dec 9, 2011 12:37 PM PST up reply actions

I’d like to see a breakdown of the Angels deal. At the time the Dodgers were saying $3 billion for 20 years, it was reported by LAT and (I believe) Sports Business Journal as actually being $1.6 or $1.7 billion over 13 years.

And even if it is the same, I still think Selig was right to nix that deal since the Dodgers should be able to get a better deal, as they likely will now.

by BFDC on Dec 9, 2011 12:02 PM PST up reply actions

Here's the part I don't understand

per Shaikin:

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has agreed to sell the team by April 30. He and his advisors argued the Dodgers would command a higher sale price if the TV rights could be sold now and bidders would know exactly how many billions a new TV contract would be worth.

The bidder would not be obligated to proceed with that contract.

If they aren’t obligated to proceed with the new contract, what is the point? Or is this just the right to negotiate a deal that the new owner has to approve?

by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

Never understood that last line either.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 9, 2011 12:08 PM PST up reply actions

Its like Frank is removing the upside of the deal from the bidders. Instead of the owners saying your current tv deal is X and we think it could be Y, this is how much we value the team for (but if they are able to negotiate a tv deal that is much higher than what is expected today that would be a huge upside for the bidders).

Frank is removing the opportunity for the upside by saying here is the negotiated tv deal, now I know exactly what the team is worth, no low-ball offers please.

by BFDC on Dec 9, 2011 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

That makes sense intuitively; I’m just wondering how logistically that would work.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

When the prospective owners are putting together their business plans and proformas to take to investors, they are plugging in a number for the TV rights over the next 20 years. They probably have a couple scenarios, where they have a lower base-case model, and then a higher “if all goes well” model. They would bid off the base-case and hope for the upside. Frank is essentially trying to remove the uncertainty and get paid for the upside.

To me, it’s common sense to draft in order to address your weaknesses: you get exactly what you want, and if things don’t work out, you’re right back to where you were when you started. On the other hand, I also get drafting the BPA and flipping them to a team that both has that need and can address your weakness simultaneously. Tough decision…

Not to confuse anyone

The Dodgers will still get paid the same $40M by Fox for 2012 and 2013 regardless of any new deal that they make, thus any deals with some one other than Fox would not increase their revenue. The issue with the Fox deal that McCourt had last year was that he was going to get an upfront payment that would lessen the value of the media contract in future years.

It appears that when the Angels got to make now 2 deals with Fox (the Dodgers have not made any deals with Fox since probably their very first one in the late 90s, they got current market value.

Not to belabor this but Fox set up any potential owner of the Dodgers in 2004 with this media rights lock up, no RSN possibility and rights locked in for 10 years. They also had no need to ever open up negotiations with the Dodgers since their rights fees were certain undervalued.

by bhsportsguy on Dec 9, 2011 12:51 PM PST reply actions

Ok, I am confused now. If any new deal will not increase revenue, then why open themselves up to litigation? Is it just a tactic to nail down the worth of the franchise and extract the most money in the bidding process?

by OB12 on Dec 9, 2011 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

to the second. Its mostly a valuation issue. The litigation is non-issue since Fox has no argument for damages on closing Prime Ticket since that would be their business decision (and really, one could argue that without the Lakers, they were going to have to change their situation anyway)

Nice column by Michael Wilbon

The NBA, from the commissioner’s office to a great many of its owners, is so envious of the NFL that it wants the same kind of parity. It wants its small markets to matter in the same way. But the fact is, the NBA’s popularity, its very brand, was successfully built, yes, on the participation of a lot of teams but on the brilliance of a few, notably the Lakers and Celtics. Parity might have been a worthy goal for Pete Rozelle and the NFL, but it has never amounted to a hill of beans for the NBA. Neither has some socialist-style spreading of wealth.

Make no mistake (and somebody ought to stand up in a room and shout this in the faces of the shortsighted owners who whined over this deal): It’s the Lakers and Celtics and the ability of their top executives to make deals decade after decade that not only have kept those franchises at the top of the pyramid but also allowed the NBA to matter as much as it has.

The NBPA has informed the NBA that they need to find a suitable trade for Chris Paul by Monday, according to sources.

If a deal is not reached, the union will pursue other options including litigation.

On Thursday, the Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick. But the NBA killed the deal later in the evening.

Thank you for including the link. When you use a long quote, though, please use block quotes — the little quotation mark thing you see above where you post.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on Dec 9, 2011 2:21 PM PST up reply actions

Next time: Telling him how to make sure the blockquote doesn’t break after the first paragraph.

just highlight what you want to quote, then click the icon

That doesn’t work for me. Unless I put a period at each paragraph break it gets all messed up.

haha because im done counting on this guy doing anything for me in FFL this season and am prepared to move forward without him. Plus he doesnt have Schaub anymore anyways so his upside is limited even when he can play. I will never draft him again though. I dont know whats going on but NFL seems to be getting soft…. players are out forever now. McFadden, Ford and Moore out again this week, wtf??? Raiders are going to get destroyed by 20 plus.

Bill Simmons is a talented writer with a great basketball mind. Unfortunately, he does not always write about the NBA.

"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

by Nolij on Dec 9, 2011 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

I hate how he uses the same phrases over and over in all of his articles.

Like the [write something about a team] then writing “cut to fans of [team] nodding sadly.”

Bugs me so much.

by fbihop on Dec 9, 2011 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

Even then, he gets grating.

1) Proposes lop-sided trade
2) Asks emphatically, “Why hasn’t this happened yet?”
3) Concludes with, “I should be an NBA GM”

I used to love him when he started out on Page 2. I even bought his first book AND went down to that one Boston bar in Santa Monica to have him sign it.

I appreciate what he’s done for sports blogging, but the rampant Laker-hate while living in LA finally got to me.
