Dan Gilbert is a puke
But if Dwight Howard wanted to play in NJ all along, what kind of lack of foresight would that be on the Lakers’ part?
They’d be left with virtually no size. Did they have a backup plan to address the frontcourt? Lakers might be better off playing with the roster that won 2 rings.

Well
didn’t seem like it, Howard said through his reps that he preferred NJ and a deal could happen today. Can’t be blocked because the Magic aren’t owned by the league.

There's much less venom toward the Nets than Lakers
I guess owners are tired of the Lakers getting great players. That’s what it comes down to.

They should be happy. Good lakers means higher national revenues and money in their pockets when they sell out the games the lakers visit. If they want those players to come play 41 games instead of 2 they should pay them.
pay them
And actually build a team the smart way so you can compete

But
What can you do if your best player isn’t a max player but you don’t have space or may not be an attractive destination for free agents?
you can be the TB Rays of the NBA
bottom line, you can’t legislate intelligence or shrewd management in sports, just like the management, or else you have the NBA dictating where players can play.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
You
Cannot be the Tampa Bay Rays in the NBA, you only have two rounds to pick players, you have a salary cap and trades have to match salaries.
And let’s say you get fortunate and get two or three really good players, you can’t sign them to low vaue extensions because their first 3 years are set by the CBA and then they know what the Max potential lis for their deal.
The NBA and MLB are fundamentally different in how the league rules and finances are handled.
the owners bought into the system, stop crying
they know the system, they know stars are driven to big markets. The bottom line is that they didn’t really address their business model in the last CBA but now they’re crying about it.
What they really should do is contract some teams in this new normal of stagnant growth, but they are living in a false paradigm where everyone wants to have the same chance to profit and compete in the NBA. You can’t legislate that, period.
The NBA is a third-rate league. You have to let free agents be free and determine where they want to go, and if they don’t want to go to your team, make it attractive enough that they do.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
Do you think that Joe Johnson not being a max player has hampered the progress of the Atlanta Hawks?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
No
I think Hawks have been stuck in that middle ground where you can’t draft a mega star player nor be an attractive alternative for free agents.
Right, so you spend the max on the guy who will play for you. He may not be a “max” but he’s a damn good one.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Agreed. Love Joe Johnson. This isn’t Rashard Lewis type contract.
I think a lot of it is that Joe Johnson ended up being paid more than any of the free agents from that summer (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Dirk) but that’s just a result of the salary system where older guys have a higher “max” ceiling.

That it might be payback because Paul was the only star in CBA negotiations, so it might be petty maneuvers to keep him in NO for now.
These small owners are also not doing the Hornets any favors. They hired Demps and others to run the team, then when they engineer a quality trade they block it?

I know, I just thought based on the reports earlier this week that Portland was not going to amnesty him that he’d had good reports on his ability to play through the pain.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I had heard the same. A lot of people in Portland were thinking that there’s no need to amnesty him now, why not give him the year to see how the knee holds up and they amnesty him next year (if that’s the way the decision goes.) Clearly the injury is really bad. That really sucks.

He was five years old when we adopted him. A total wreck due to abuse but the sweetest dog ever (and I’m not a dog guy). He was at the old spectrum of adopted greyhound ages, which meant he must’ve been successful as a racer. (We traced his tattoo to figure out his lineage—he ended his “career” in Mexico.) We let him run a bunch of times at greyhound functions and he was smoking fast. They are called 45 mph couch potatoes for a reason.

Devil's Advocate
I think the fact he signed for market value (i.e. top value) makes it not that big of a surprise.
To me it’s more of an organizational philosophy question. We simply don’t prioritize locking up young players (whether this is good or bad is another issue). I know it takes two to tango, but if we had R. Martin and Loney locked up long-term at least we wouldn’t be dumpster diving like we are now.

Right
It’s not like they are in danger of losing the player. If a player is really good, you will have him for 6 years, maybe close to seven depending on when you call him up.
I would be more likely to do the deal with a pitcher like Moore than any position player. You can see in a few starts how overpowering he is. The league can only scout that so much.

No clue
But is it karmic payback for allowing the Pau Gasol trade in the first place? Don’t most people think that was a fleece?
They did, but in the end the Grizzlies got Marc Gasol and I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who would not trade Pau Gasol for Marc right now. Kind of amazing how different skills sets the two brothers have. To bad they will not play on the same team.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Memphis rebuilt their entire team with that trade. They got a franchise center in Marc Gasol and the cap space which allowed them to trade for Zach Randolph. As a result, 2010-2011 was the best year in Grizzlies history. By comparison, the Gasol led Grizzlies never won a playoff game.
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 8:41 AM PST up reply actions
But to Dan Gilbert’s point, the Lakers took on a bunch of salary in the Memphis deal, but they save money under this trade (though they are clearly giving up more in talent, in Gasol and Odom). But Gilbert in his rant completely ignored what the deal meant for New Orleans and Houston.
I think a deal can get done if the Lakers sweeten the pot a little, maybe add a draft pick or take back another salaried player in the deal.
But I hope the players revolt over this.
The team coming out the worst in this deal is Houston, not New Orleans. But Daryl Morey has a Billy Beane post-moneyball type reputation with the snarky NBA writers so it wasn’t really challenged. They just assume he knows what he’s doing.

But the team with TMac and Yao in the playoffs (2008?) was the best team the Rockets had since Hakeem. They haven’t done much since then.
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 8:59 AM PST up reply actions
Okay, I just remember them as being extremely over achieving considering they had Yao’s contract but no Yao year after year. But I didn’t pay that much attention.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
The last time the Rockets won a playoff series, Yao played in the post-season (beat the Blazers.) Yao got injured in the second round and the team was bounced. The following year, Yao missed the entire season and the Rockets were decent (42-40) but missed the playoffs. Missed the playoffs again last season and seemed to go into rebuild mode.
So they probably over-acheived the past two years with Yao’s contract on the books but unable to play, but in the West they were still unable to make the post-season.

I’ll try not to be a complete Grizzlies honk here, but that Memphis team last year was better than any of the Morey Rockets teams. And that was completely put together by Wallace (Bill Simmons punching bag) the GM of the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies also traded with the Rockets last year at the deadline. Thabeet and a pick for Shane Battier (the perfect player for a playoff run.)

Thunder built with youth and hit the lotto in the draft (Rays)
Grizzlies traded for guys that were undervalued (A’s)
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2011 9:00 AM PST up reply actions
I don’t think you can put the A’s in that category. All of their prior success was built around home grown talent not trades. Any trades they made of that home grown talent (Haren) allowed to be mediocre at best but hardly successful. Unless I’m misremembering the Angels not winning all those divisions since the home grown boys left the coup via FA or trades.

Moneyball meant the A’s could surround an excellent core with secondary talent that was out performing players of similar cost.

I would’ve hated that move. Hopefully Ned tried to move Guerra instead, which is a sell high. Jansen is the real deal.
Real curious about our plans for Guerra next year. He’s kind of in that AJ Ellis territory of “Are we really going to go with him?” A little scary that there are so many closers available right now. Resist the urge, Ned!
guerra is far more established then ellis

If it makes you feel better, Phil I think Withrow is better than Eo.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
The more I look at Eo’s advanced stats the less I like him. Since Minor League Central got pitch data I’ve paid a lot of attention to how many swings and misses a pitcher can induce and Eo wasn’t all that amazing at in compared to his overall strike out rate. Webster, Withrow, Archer, and many others were better at missing bats than he was.
That and a lot of Eo’s success was based on an unnaturally low home run rate. Eo’s slightly above average at inducing ground balls but his home runs were not matching. Since he doesn’t seem like he has the stuff to constantly induce soft contact I don’t think that will last in the bigs.
I haven’t actually studied any of this and for all I know swings and misses might not matter at all, but these kind of things could help explain why Eo dominated the Southern League and looked so unnotable on the Dodgers.
Minor League Central @mlcentral @andrewngrant
His Dodgers debut was better than I was expecting. We’ll see though, obviously he needs to sharpen his command.
The fact that he outperformed Billz’ debut was encouraging.
To my eyes
He still looks like a chucker out there. I fully expect him to land in the bullpen eventually but stranger things have happened.
John Ely looked great in his first few games and we all know how that went. I’d like to see Eo go for an entire season after the league has a chance to adjust.
I pitched to Matt Kemp, and all I got was this stupid earned run.
@maddzgoesrawr @arenafitness @madeleine_arena
Completely different types of pitchers that aren’t really comparable but yes Eo will need to adjust and locate pitches better bottom line. Just saying, the same goes for 97% of other rookie pitchers. There’s maybe a couple studs per year that come up and are awesome out of the gate and don’t look back.
Yeah I’m VERY skeptical on his MLB success without some major changes to both his repretoire and control
His slider was inconsestent
but there where times hwere it looked really good.
Watch me all in flames, on a butterfly I ride
not a direct reply to you, but I think sometimes being skeptical of a prospect comes across as rooting for them to fail. I’m rooting for all of them to succeed, and in Eo’s case it would be exciting to see what a 100mph fastball would look like with control and quality offspeed pitchES, but he’s a ways from that.
This is why I've wanted him to start the season in AA
And many others want him there, too. Needs work on developing more reliable secondary stuff.

Of all the good things they do, signing old DH’s has been a thorn in the side from the beginning. They look like good signings but never work out. Just surprised the White Sox got Dunned instead of the Rays.

I should have said outside of Shaq
Since he was a FA signing but they had to clear space.
Anyway, outside of Shaq, every LA Laker great was acquired by trade, either the player themselves or the draft pick. Both Baylor and West were drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers.
The Lakers don’t draft high enough to get marquee talent. The only lottery pick I can think of is Eddie Jones. Is that the only one they’ve ever had?

The next date to watch this offseason is Monday, as the deadline to tender contracts to players is 9 p.m. PST. The Dodgers have five players eligible for salary arbitration: Andre Ethier, Hong-Chih Kuo, James Loney, Tony Gwynn Jr., and Clayton Kershaw.
Safe to say if Kuo has not signed a contract by Monday at 09:00PM he is good bye?
Is Gwynn the only question mark? and given his probable price it would be a shame to lose him. You would think they would easily be able to tender him, make a deal and then trade him if they can’t afford him. Wouldn’t you?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think they can still work out a deal with Kuo past Monday, since I don’t think he has much of a market. I think if they don’t work out a deal by Monday it is likely Kuo won’t be back, but the door won’t be closed.

Hey soccer fans, just want to know if I got this right. In europe soccer, most soccer outside of us. There isnt any salary cap right? The big market and money teams usually always get or sign the top players in the world correct? There is nothing done to help smaller market teams succeed, or any profit sharing, or create league parity right? However soccer outside the US is still the biggest sport in the world, and small teams still make money, and nobody stops watching and isnt losing any kind of fan support world wide??
And if you don’t win enough, they send you to the minor leagues and call up a minor league franchise to replace you.

There is no salary cap presumably because there are several different leagues with similar high level competitives (La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga, etc.) So you’d have to organize some sort of world-wide salary cap which seems…impossible.
Also, soccer revenue sharing is a complete joke. Barcelona and Real arranged it so those two teams alone keep 75% of the revenues. It’s crazy. They don’t even pretend to be fair.

Also, if you want a free market like in Europe, remove the restrictions from where NBA teams can be located. The Premier League has half the league in London, the Argentine League has like 75% of the league located in Buenos Aires. The Lakers can’t have it both ways by keeping teams (like the Kings) out of their market and then asking for a free market when it comes to salaries.
If the market was free, you’d have 4 teams in LA, 5 in NY, 3 in Chicago, etc.

Remember how
I was saying yesterday that low ratings don’t mean no one watches the Dodgers.
For the Brewers to get a 1 share, meaning 1% of TVs in Milwaukee are watching the Brewers, they need to be watched in 9,035 households. For the Dodgers to get a 1 share, they need to be watched in 56, 542 homes. The Brewers would have a 6 share being in that many homes.
so if the Packers have a STH wait list long enough to fill the stadium, plus you figure those who can’t afford to get on the list, they probably pull almost a 20 share every Sunday. That’s a lot of ad revenue : )

Maybe the trade being rejected might turn out for the best if Lakers can still maybe get a Baron Davis or something out of it in the end. No Chris Paul, but not losing Gasol or Odom either. Though Stein said he thinks Lakers will still move Odom now, because Odom is just too sensitive a guy for the Lakers to move forward with now.
Davis is still a good player, and IMO, would play better then he has been of late if on a contending team that he is happy being on.
FWIW
His first year in LA was one of the worst seasons I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t stand Baron. Then, he actually picked it up. His second year was SO much better and the 3rd year (before he was traded) he was the perfect PG to play with Blake (except for the fact that he can’t hit a jumper.) He throws a sick alley-oop and opposing defenses were so worried about ending up on posters, Baron was able to dribble right to the basket and simply lay it in. The guy loved playing with Griffin.
Interestingly, the rumors that came out after he was traded was that Gordon hated playing with him. I assume Blake and DJ loved playign with him.

(from what I’d been hearing this week from various sources, not just from Archie but who knows if true) is that Manning and Luck won’t co-exist very well, even though nothing personal between them. i.e., Luck should start pretty early and Manning doesn’t want to feel someone breathing down his, er, neck. Since the NBA purchased the New Orleans Hornets, final responsibility for significant management decisions lies with the Commissioner’s Office in consultation with team chairman Jac Sperling. All decisions are made on the basis of what is in the best interests of the Hornets. In the case of the trade proposal that was made to the Hornets for Chris Paul, we decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade.

I am really trying to wrap my mind around this. So theoretically the Dodgers could come to an agreement for something similar, $3B over 20 years, or not and then auction off the rights for more potentially. But possibly endure a lawsuit.
Shaikin estimated the O/U for a Dodger contract over 20 years would be $4 billion. Jives with Jon Weisman’s article yesterday.

Fox has also asked for a 14-day stay. I don’t know whether, if that’s granted, it would also delay this clause for 14 days and so give them until Jan. 28, or if that’s just to give them time to appeal but otherwise sticks to the original 45-day schedule beginning Nov. 30.
One of the lawyers (for Dodgers, I thin k) has suggested that during this period they could also continue negotiations with Fox under arbitration to try to reach a mutual agreement.
I’d like to see a breakdown of the Angels deal. At the time the Dodgers were saying $3 billion for 20 years, it was reported by LAT and (I believe) Sports Business Journal as actually being $1.6 or $1.7 billion over 13 years.
And even if it is the same, I still think Selig was right to nix that deal since the Dodgers should be able to get a better deal, as they likely will now.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 12:09 PM PST up reply actions
With the TV rights auction getting accelerated
Seems like a new tv contract could potentially be signed by sometime next year. Bidders should tell Frank to open the wallet now and sign a Prince.
Here's the part I don't understand
Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has agreed to sell the team by April 30. He and his advisors argued the Dodgers would command a higher sale price if the TV rights could be sold now and bidders would know exactly how many billions a new TV contract would be worth.
The bidder would not be obligated to proceed with that contract.
If they aren’t obligated to proceed with the new contract, what is the point? Or is this just the right to negotiate a deal that the new owner has to approve?
by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 12:06 PM PST up reply actions
Its like Frank is removing the upside of the deal from the bidders. Instead of the owners saying your current tv deal is X and we think it could be Y, this is how much we value the team for (but if they are able to negotiate a tv deal that is much higher than what is expected today that would be a huge upside for the bidders).
Frank is removing the opportunity for the upside by saying here is the negotiated tv deal, now I know exactly what the team is worth, no low-ball offers please.
That makes sense intuitively; I’m just wondering how logistically that would work.
by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2011 12:13 PM PST up reply actions
When the prospective owners are putting together their business plans and proformas to take to investors, they are plugging in a number for the TV rights over the next 20 years. They probably have a couple scenarios, where they have a lower base-case model, and then a higher “if all goes well” model. They would bid off the base-case and hope for the upside. Frank is essentially trying to remove the uncertainty and get paid for the upside.

“How I turned a parking lot into an iconic MLB Franchise, over $100mm in houses, $200mm in cash (after paying off my whore wife) and I got a new parking lot”
Russ Granik and the NBA got skewered just now on ESPN
Outside the Lines, Chris Broussard and Adande went for the jugular. ’Twas great.
Granik was backpedaling faster than Darrell Green. I think Broussard said he was actually “disgusted with the NBA”.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
Should the Lakers Trade for Granik?

So, can someone sign Arenas for like $1 ?
Or do they have to at least pay vet’s minimum?
I wonder if he'd take $1 a day
for the next million days.

Sad that Brandon Roy is being forced to retire for medical reasons
Read somewhere that he and Oden played a grand total of 78 games together: they went 50-28 in those contests. Oh, what might have been…

Man, what is life like as a Blazers fan?? You pass on Jordan for Bowie, many years later you pass on Durant for Oden….
I would say that should put the Chris Paul thing in perspective, but I fear you wouldn’t be able to see the perspective.
All it shows me is bad management makes bad teams, not being in a small market. Though in this case, maybe more bad luck?
Not only that
didn’t Portland already have Clyde Drexler when the draft came that year? No need for Jordan when you’ve already got a great SG…plus, decent C’s are much more rare.

even the Bulls mgmt from the era admitted
they never thought Jordan was going to be an all-time great or anything.
However, it is a great argument for the Best Player Available strategy. Read: MAGIC JOHNSON.

Sure
If you determine that a player is elite and you have the chance to take him, you take him, West did that with Kobe when trading for him even though they had Eddie Jones. In basketball, one player can have such a profound effect.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
I've always been torn in with respect to that strategy
To me, it’s common sense to draft in order to address your weaknesses: you get exactly what you want, and if things don’t work out, you’re right back to where you were when you started. On the other hand, I also get drafting the BPA and flipping them to a team that both has that need and can address your weakness simultaneously. Tough decision…

I loved Sam Bowie on the Lakers. Great passer.

That was like when Bill Walton won NBA MVP in 1978 despite playing just 58 games. That was the year after they won the title and they were 35-6 at the halfway point that year, and 50-10. I don’t know off hand what their record with Walton was but I bet it was awesome.

Jared Allen strikes again
“I don’t like going to Detroit,” Allen told MLive.com. “I’ll be honest. It’s gloomy, it sucks. Everything is brown, and then there is snow on the ground. There’s like brownstones everywhere, and I’m like, ‘Awesome.’ I don’t know, I couldn’t do it. If I had to live in Detroit, I think I’d just drown myself in the river that was across the way.”
Detroit has contributed much more to the world than the Twin Cities
And I have no problem with Minneapolis. Stupid.

Marlins supposedly putting feelers out on trading Hanley.
I know it will never happen, but what if the Dodgers traded for Hanley and, so, traded away Gordon. Would you folk be OK with that?
Only if it was Gordon plus someone without a real high ceiling
Hanley = Manny without the consistent hitting and the smile
He’ll be expensive, inconsistent, and a headcase. Plus his teammates won’t be able to stand him after awhile. Yes, when he’s right, he’s a great hitter for SS or 3B. But he isn’t right a lot of the time.

Dodgers don’t have enough to offer without him, unless there were a three-way deal. It would be hilarious if they worked out something where, say, Wandy Rodriguez went to Miami from Houston though.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Not to confuse anyone
The Dodgers will still get paid the same $40M by Fox for 2012 and 2013 regardless of any new deal that they make, thus any deals with some one other than Fox would not increase their revenue. The issue with the Fox deal that McCourt had last year was that he was going to get an upfront payment that would lessen the value of the media contract in future years.
It appears that when the Angels got to make now 2 deals with Fox (the Dodgers have not made any deals with Fox since probably their very first one in the late 90s, they got current market value.
Not to belabor this but Fox set up any potential owner of the Dodgers in 2004 with this media rights lock up, no RSN possibility and rights locked in for 10 years. They also had no need to ever open up negotiations with the Dodgers since their rights fees were certain undervalued.
Ok, I am confused now. If any new deal will not increase revenue, then why open themselves up to litigation? Is it just a tactic to nail down the worth of the franchise and extract the most money in the bidding process?
Yes
to the second. Its mostly a valuation issue. The litigation is non-issue since Fox has no argument for damages on closing Prime Ticket since that would be their business decision (and really, one could argue that without the Lakers, they were going to have to change their situation anyway)
There’s apparently a Three Stooges movie coming out soon. Oh, goodie.

though I admit to chuckling once or twice and the cast they got for the Stooges look like they nail it well. OTOH I’ve never found the Stooges themselves very funny and the movie looks pretty pointless.

My movie dilemma
(I really want to see a movie tonight)
1. Drive 45 minutes to see “Take Shelter” (not playing near me)
2. Stay home and watch “Black Swan” or “Let the Right One In”
Thoughts?
duh
the remake changed the title, OK. Haven’t seen Take Shelter yet, but LTROI is fantastic, Black Swan less so but still quite good.
"I'm telling you, y'all created a monster."
Take Shelter is supposed to be really interesting i've heard, Shannon's great, but dark/bleak...
so if you want dark/bleak you can get that at home and watch the other two!
(Which are great. Well Let the Right One In is great; Black Swan I liked but it’s not for all tastes, is pretty crazy. Like 70s Italian Horror basically.)

Wish he was still writing for the Washington Post
The NBA, from the commissioner’s office to a great many of its owners, is so envious of the NFL that it wants the same kind of parity. It wants its small markets to matter in the same way. But the fact is, the NBA’s popularity, its very brand, was successfully built, yes, on the participation of a lot of teams but on the brilliance of a few, notably the Lakers and Celtics. Parity might have been a worthy goal for Pete Rozelle and the NFL, but it has never amounted to a hill of beans for the NBA. Neither has some socialist-style spreading of wealth.
Make no mistake (and somebody ought to stand up in a room and shout this in the faces of the shortsighted owners who whined over this deal): It’s the Lakers and Celtics and the ability of their top executives to make deals decade after decade that not only have kept those franchises at the top of the pyramid but also allowed the NBA to matter as much as it has.

Sources: #Dbacks close on Cahill. RHP Jarrod Parker, OF Collin Cowgill in play for #Athletics. Could be others coming from A’s. #MLB
Nick Piecoro also said Parker was possible, but then Bob Nightengale said this:
The #Dbacks plan on Parker being their 5th starter so he is NOT in potential deal
Kennedy, Hudson, Cahill, Collmenter. Saunders not offered arb, right? With that top-four, I don’t see a reason they couldn’t try to hide either a different young guy and/or Eveland-type in the five spot.

The NBPA has informed the NBA that they need to find a suitable trade for Chris Paul by Monday, according to sources.
If a deal is not reached, the union will pursue other options including litigation.
On Thursday, the Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick. But the NBA killed the deal later in the evening.

haha because im done counting on this guy doing anything for me in FFL this season and am prepared to move forward without him. Plus he doesnt have Schaub anymore anyways so his upside is limited even when he can play. I will never draft him again though. I dont know whats going on but NFL seems to be getting soft…. players are out forever now. McFadden, Ford and Moore out again this week, wtf??? Raiders are going to get destroyed by 20 plus.
Whatever happened to the days of wrapping things up or chopping fingers off to play? Please come back.
