Dodgers Open Spring Schedule With Road Games Against Angels, Giants

Andre Ethier, Clayton Kershaw, and Matt Kemp are ready to play some baseball (Photo: Jon SooHoo | LA Dodgers)

After 145 days without baseball, the Dodgers will suit up for not just one game today, but two. They will split their squad and open their spring training schedule with a pair of road games, one in Tempe against the Angels, and one in Scottsdale against the Giants. Both games begin at 12:05 p.m. PST.

at Angels

Dodgers   Angels

3B Izturis
C Navarro SS Aybar
RF Ethier 2B Kendrick
CF Kemp 1B Trumbo
DH Gimenez DH Conger
3B Mitchell C Mathis
1B Sands CF Bourjos
2B Sellers LF Willits
SS Castro RF Trout

Against the Angels, Hiroki Kuroda will start, and be followed on the mound by Rubby De La Rosa, Scott Elbert, Lance Cormier, Roman Colon, and Luis Vasquez.

The Angels' scheduled pitchers are Trevor Bell, Michael Kohn, Matt Meyer, Anthony Ortega and Garrett Richards.

Triple A manager Lorenzo Bundy will manage the Dodgers in Tempe.

at Giants

Dodgers   Giants
CF Gwynn CF Torres
SS Carroll 2B DeRosa
1B Loney 1B Huff
C Barajas 3B Sandoval
DH Thames RF Schierholtz
LF Paul DH Ishikawa
RF Kapler SS Fontenot
2B DeJesus
LF Neal
3B Miles C Stewart

Against the Giants, the Dodgers will send Tim Redding, Carlos Monasterios, Oscar Villarreal, Jon Huber, and Wilkin De La Rosa to the mound.

Jonathan Sanchez will start for the Giants.

Don Mattingly will manage the Dodgers in Scottsdale. Mattingly said starters will play four innings today, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.

Neither game is on TV; the Dodgers' broadcast crew will call the game against the Giants (list of affiliates here), while the game against the Angels will be broadcast by the Angels radio network.

Dodgers radio crew chose the wrong game to broadcast

I’m much more interested in the game against the angels

Yup, I was just thinking the same thing

im gonna listen to both games

by sec305LFP LAD on Feb 26, 2011 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

I doubt that there will be many ST games broadcast by both crews for split games. With the other LA team broadcasting the Angels game, available to anyone in the LA area (but not me), it’s pretty logical to broadcast the other game. Not to mention these decisions would have been made before the lineups were chosen.

So maybe that should read “Dodgers chose the wrong lineup to send to Scottsboro, for radio broadcast.” Which probably wasn’t on their mind.

by berkowit28 on Feb 26, 2011 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

i guess i should say…Since im in the LA area ill listen to both

by sec305LFP LAD on Feb 26, 2011 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

One game is against the Dodgers’ biggest rival, and the other is against the Angels. That’s why they are broadcasting the game against SF

by Eric Stephen on Feb 26, 2011 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

Right. But the Dodgers themselves didn’t take that competitive attitude so early in spring training. They didn’t choose the better lineup for the game against their biggest rival, since they’re not interested in winning on the first day. Mattingly is going to that game/lineup to see some of the minor names he’ll have very few other chances to see. There may be some reason why this group is being sent to Giants rather than Angels, but it’s probably some internal reason that doesn’t have anything much to do with competitiveness. Maybe there’s someone in the Giants organization someone wants to talk to while they’re there. Or something.

by berkowit28 on Feb 26, 2011 11:00 AM PST up reply actions

The broadcast and managing the game(s) are two totally different and unrelated things.

by Eric Stephen on Feb 26, 2011 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

Isn’t that what I said? (This happens quite a bit here.)

by berkowit28 on Feb 26, 2011 11:10 AM PST up reply actions

The problem is that you took Brandon’s statement literally instead of figurately, I believe. I don’t think Brandon was suggesting that the game broadcast could or should be switched after the lineups were announced.

by JonWeisman on Feb 26, 2011 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

Actually I was aware of that. Equally figuratively, I was suggesting that – if this was actually of concern to the team – they could have swapped teams. I guess I didn’t initially feel I had to spell out that I didn’t in fact expect the team to do so, since they have other criteria at this point in spring training than both broadcasters and eager fans. But I guess I would hav had to spell it out if I didn’t want to get corrected. OK.

# 9 at Baseball HQ for the Angels
Comments: Tall and muscular hitter who led minors in HR in first season above Double-A. Tweaked approach to become more selective which resulted in higher BA and OBP. Has balanced swing for guy his size and has ample bat speed. Strikeouts will always occur due to holes in swing. Has seen time in OF to increase versatility, but doesn’t have much speed or defensive talent.

Padilla wants to be back by May 1

per Gurnick:

In a best-case scenario, Padilla will need three to four weeks before he resumes throwing, then would need the month of April to essentially go through Spring Training and rebuild arm strength with bullpen sessions and a Minor League rehab assignment.

Because he is being viewed as a reliever, Padilla’s rehab will be shorter than that of a starting pitcher.

I was surprised that virtually no one picked Monasterios to be on the 25 man roster, given all the experience he got last year.

by Joey Joe on Feb 26, 2011 1:15 PM PST reply actions

That’s because the only reason Monasterios was on the roster was because he was a rule 5 pick.

Not the best start for Monk to the season tho.

by Joey Joe on Feb 26, 2011 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

I think most of the reason is that he is expected to start, and given the bullpen depth and that he can be sent down to the minors now, they can allow him to start every fifth day rather than get yanked back and forth between roles.

by Alex41592 on Feb 26, 2011 2:03 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

After head to head, you go down to each next spot in the standings and see who has a better record against that team.

If both win out after today, I believe it would get weird. Both would have split with Washington, but then there could be a logjam at #4

by Eric Stephen on Feb 26, 2011 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Official word

Two-team tie
a. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.
b. Each team’s record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the !nal regular standings, and then continuing down through the
standings until one team gains an advantage.
When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the collective tied teams as a
group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
c. Won-lost percentage against all Division I opponents.
d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

Multiple-team tie
a. Results of collective head-to-head competition during the regular season among the tied teams.
b. If more than two teams are still tied, each of the tied team’s record vs. the team occupying the highest position in the !nal regular season
standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.
When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record against the collective tied teams as a
group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
If at any point the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tie-breaking procedure will be applied.
c. Won-lost percentage against all Division I opponents.
d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.
