Dodgers Send Kershaw, Kuo To Face Rangers
Today is must-see TV, as the Dodgers battle the Rangers for the second straight day. This time the Dodgers are at home, and the game at Camelback Ranch will be televised on Prime Ticket and MLB Network. Clayton Kershaw will start for the Dodgers, making his fourth start of the spring, and Hong-Chih Kuo is scheduled to make his second Cactus League appearance on the mound as well.
Before the game today, the Dodgers made another round of cuts, optioning Jon Link and Russ Mitchell, and reassigning Roman Colon and JD Closser to minor league camp. There are 44 players remaining in major league camp: 21 pitchers and 23 position players.
Lineups
| Rangers | Dodgers | |||
| CF | Borbon | SS | Furcal | |
| SS | Andrus | 2B | DeJesus | |
| LF | Murphy | RF | Ethier | |
| RF | Cruz | CF | Kemp | |
| DH | Napoli | 3B |
Uribe |
|
| 1B | Moreland |
1B | Loney | |
| 3B | Davis | C | Barajas | |
| C | Treanor | LF | Gwynn | |
| 2B | Blanco | P | Kershaw | |
In addition to Kershaw and Kuo, Blake Hawksworth, Ron Mahay, Oscar Villarreal, Travis Schlichting, and Ramon Troncoso are listed as scheduled pitchers for the Dodgers today. But if they all pitch that would be an awfully short outing for Kershaw.
Derek Holland will start on the mound for the Rangers, and be followed by Alexi Ogando, Cody Eppley, and Zach Jackson.

Nobody answered the trivia question from the prior thread
that was in the caption. Tim Redding is wearing #46 this spring, and the last Dodger player to wear that number in the regular season was Elmer Dessens in 2004-2005.

Question
If batting average is a poor method to evaluate a hitter’s abilities, isn’t Opponent’s Batting Average a poor method to evaluate a pitcher’s performance?
If so, is Opponent’s OPS really the best way to determine how well a pitcher has done?
No Rafael Furcals were hurt in the making of this video.
OOPS is like a better version of WHIP. It’s not as good as OPS because pitchers have less control over batted balls than hitters.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 15, 2011 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions
This is what I’m thinking. If a pitcher gives up a ball in the gap, it’s not up to him whether the guy was fast or not or if the outfielder takes a poor route and it becomes a triple.
No Rafael Furcals were hurt in the making of this video.
C'mon now
The idea is to simply try to extrapolate how much of the pitcher’s “results” were the work of him and how much was the work of the people around him.
Easier said than done.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2011 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions
With everything that we've learned about DIPS theory
we just have to acknowledge that we can’t use the same measures to judge hitters and pitchers.
Opponents batting average is a poor measure because it is so heavily dependent on things that are basically out of the pitcher’s control. Opponents OPS is better, but is still subject to the same shortcomings.
xFIP or TRA are pretty inclusive and do a fair job of eliminating the white noise.

Official scorer at a spring training game has to be a pretty relaxed gig. Mainly because the results don’t matter at all.
This is the point in the movie
when after the game, just outside the press box at Camelback Ranch, the official scorer turns to our protagonist, grabs him by the collar, and screams, “THEY MATTER TO ME, DAMNIT. THEY….MATTER…TO….ME!!!!!”

No, it was dismissed because it was a sample size of 10.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2011 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions
My shared opinion is based more on the meaninglessness of the record. It’s erased on opening day. How can it matter? We can look back on records and try to figure out patterns, but I still say ST records have no predictive power whatsoever. As others have said, if the team sucks this year, it’s because it sucks, not because of anything that happened this spring (for example, our sucking).
Not really
a spring record of .350 or less having some correlation to the regular season. The sample size was very small 2003 – 2010.
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
No
any given spring training percentage, from .350 to .750 has teams who then in the regular season have played ball from .400 to .600. When .400 is 98 losses and .600 is 97 wins, spring training winning percentage then has nothing to do with whether you have a top 5 draft pick or a bottom 5 draft pick.

Even audio is killing the battery this year. It was always bad, but last year (and the year before) I was able to get through a whole game plus a bit on audio with the screen off. Now after 45 minutes on audio, screen off, battery is half gone.
On the other hand, maybe the battery didn’t start full (facebook notifications are going crazy for me today for obvious reasons… maybe that is killing my battery too).

see the uniform is a kit, but the top is a shirt, and I find a bunch of the non brits were refer to their shirts as kits, thinking it another word for jersey.

Nicotine is the reason you are addicted to smoking. After a certain point, it also becomes a mental addiction, but the nicotine starts it.
If they move, Kill em
I feel it is easier to overcome the nicotine.
Sure, it is addictive, but I have been attempting to break the cycle of associating it with watching baseball or just having a beer. I am looking into hypnosis to help with that, but damn it is expensive.

OK, so Casey Blake doesn't have an oblique strain
but how can this passage from Gurnick be anything good?
“They are sending the MRI to the doctor in LA and in north Phoenix to come up with the proper treatment. What they saw doesn’t fit into a category or package. The symptoms and the MRI don’t fit.”
I wonder who has seen the MRI and is making the determination that the symptoms don’t fit the MRI. If it’s Stan Conte — and it might be, I guess — he doesn’t have an MD, does he? Let’s wait and see what a doc says. Probably not good but a trainer is not a doctor.
If it’s an MD who’s made that determination and he’s like “fuck if i know, let’s show a specialist,” then that’s cause for concern.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
by Humma Kavula on Mar 15, 2011 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Good point
Maybe he was like, “Damnit Jim! I’m not a doctor. Oh wait, I am a doctor. Still, I don’t know what that thing is.”
Casey then said, “My name’s not Jim.”
by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2011 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions
OK, it seems that Conte holds credentials in athletic training and physical therapy and was — at the time of his hire by the Dodgers — going for his doctorate in physical therapy.
With all of that, I’d guess the following:
1. He knows how to read an MRI
2. 9 times out of 10 or better he can make the proper determination on what to do based on what the MRI says
3. When the shit hits the fan he’s gotta call in the big guns

When I just tried to navigate to TBLA via my bookmarks, while the site was loading, my PC all of a sudden switched to another site that looked that Windows security, the site did a “scan” and told me I had a bunch of viruses and wanted me to download a file to “clean them”
I smelled scam the whole time, nothing got downloaded, I disconnected my net connection and then shut down my browser
I have since run a real scan and am all clean
this has only happened on my way to this site
anyone else have this happen? any ideas?
You might have a virus that your scan didn't pick up :-/
or it might be spyware
