OT - If you are a History Buff- Come to National History Day
Hey everyone, If you like History (and I'm capitalizing History because History is awesome), the National History Day program is getting underway for this year. If you're in Orange County, it is going to be held this Saturday at the Orange County Department of Education from 7:30 to 3:30.
If you're wondering what the NHD program is, students compete in age groups ranging from elementary (K-6), junior (6-8) and senior levels (9-12) in categories ranging from Historical documentaries, Historical websites, Historical posters, and other numerous categories.
If you're interested in being a judge, please come on Sat, and I'm sure a place will be found for you. This is the best and brightest of the OC competing using Historical analysis, which is sorely missing in everyday discourse.

I love reading history. What I’ve found in my own long history is that there is never just one version of historical events. There are many.
I am a WWII buff, and have many books and films of the era, and have noticed that versions of battle events vary depending on who the interviewer is, who the storyteller is, which side he was on, even which unit participating he was in. In the Battle of the Bulge, there are many inconsistencies involving the participants, so you have to read them all and come up with your own version of the story.
I have immense respect for kids who delve into history. As some wise person in the past said: “Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.”

History Rule #1

A significant number of students forced to read Zinn say the same thing, so I’ve heard.

That’s true. Winners write the immediate history. Take the Bostom Massacre. When I was growing up, I was taught that the British soldiers fired on unarmed civilians, but as I later learned, it probably waan’t a British soldier at all, but an American patriot. And that took from the 1770’s to now to find out. So, it pays to investigate history.
