If I had to guess on the 25-man roster right now

Do either Paul or Giminez have a chance to make the final 25 man roster, and is MacDougal the only NRI to make this team?

I think Jansen, Troncoso and Elber make the initial roster but there will be a competition between them to see of the three of them, which one will still be here once Padilla and Garland return from the DL.

The more I look at it, the only downside to having DeJesus make it to LA on 3/31 is that he really doesn't have a chance to stay when Blake returns, so despite my thought that MacDougal is the only NRI to make the team, it will probably be Aaron Miles.

With Thames scheduled to get some time at first base, despite Giminez's appearances there this Spring, it seems that he is destined to be DFAed with a hope that he clears so he can catch down in AAA with Ellis.

Xavier Paul could be the 25th guy, problem is that he really won't play much if at all even if Gibbons is still adjusting to his contacts.  It could delay his DFA process by a week or so depending on when Blake returns.

But in the end I think neither of them are on the team when ESPN rolls its cameras on the last night of March.

Assuming no more setbacks as we hit Minus10 days to Opening Dusk at Dodger Stadium:

Pitchers:

Kershaw, Billingsley, Lilly, Kuroda, Broxton, Kuo, Guerrier, Jansen, Hawksworth, Troncoso, MacDougal, Elbert

Catchers:

Barajas, Navarro,

Infield: Loney, Uribe, Furcal, Carroll, Miles, DeJesus

Outfield:  Ethier, Kemp, Gwynn, Thames, Gibbons

DL:

Blake, Garland, Padilla

Interesting

I’d like to hear someone (D2X?) talk about whether they plan on carrying 11 or 12 pitchers. Until then, I’m not quite sure. I can certainly see the temptation to carry a veteran bullpen arm like McDougal, so I agree that his spot appears likely. I’m still not sure about Elbert; that’s probably your boldest pick. Other options there are Mahay or giving that spot to a Gimenez or Paul (I think Paul is gone).

On the position side, I agree Miles is looking pretty good. While I like your including DeJesus, I’ll believe it when I see it. Any scenario that leaves out Castro is okay with me :)

I guess I’d swap Mahay/Gimenez for Elbert/DeJesus if held to the fire (as a guess, not preference).

I don’t think they have decided that yet.

I thought we when walked up to Mattingly’s post-game the first day we caught the tale end of a little discussion about that (possibly faulty memory.) In any case, I get the impression that they have thought about it, but it isn’t something they have to think about now, other than recognize it as an option. Then I suppose it will boil down to listing all they players they’d like to keep in the org and figuring out how to best make that happen.

Gibbons and Navarro

I wish someone would logically explain why Gibbons or Navarro were a) signed to mlb contracts, and b) allowed to steal reps from deserving players. Please Ned eat the contacts and release them.

After reading those D2X quotes DY posted, I’m officially out of the guessing game. I’m interested in finding out who will be on the team, but I’m done speculating. I have no idea what the brain trust is thinking. Zero.

Brain Trust?

To use the words “brain trust” in relation to the Dodgers is a contradiction in terms. Just go with veterans who have used up their talent, or had one good season among many, and you know the roster. Lilly? Guerrier? Mediocrities. How about we keep Rubby and either put him in the bullpen (a la Bills) or be really bold and make him the 5th starter. How about a real hitter like Corey Smith, a great story, one that will capture the imagination of the fans. Nah…..same old Dodgers. Love ‘em, of course, but imaginative, they ain’t.

Corey Smith is 28 and stuck in AA ball for a reason. Rubby pitched 110 innings last year, only 51 of them at the AA level. He is not ready for 5th starter’s innings (180+), which risks arm injury to him, and is likely best served working as starter in AA/AAA, with selected skipped starts.

Lilly was likely the third-best starter on the market last winter and Kuroda was the fourth-best. Our rotation got stronger, even if it did involve keeping some of the same guys that could have walked. Guerrier has been a very good reliever for a while now, who was fortunate to have the Dodgers pay richly for his services. I actually like Ned’s moves relative to pitching, but I’m still waiting for an improvement to the offense. Corey Smith would be a terrible choice. He’s, at best, John Lindsey with a less inspiring story.

The Dodgers had two starting pitchers when the season ended. Signing at least two was an absolute necessity and signing at least three was extremely likely after watching last year’s 5thstaterfail.

I don’t really think I disagree with the larger point taht Buck18 has buried in there — that the team has big problems this year — but frankly, I think the Dodgers did just about as good a job as they could to build an entertaining squad in ’11 considering where they were in October. They went all in on Mannypalooza in ’09 and ’10 and it almost worked in ’09. This year (and maybe next, too) we pay the price.

In short, I take a backseat to no one in bearishness, but I’m still looking forward to the season.

Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!

Buck18 does have the perfect sig line for a recent converation here though.

Not bearish.....

I just think that the Corey Smith story is compelling—-and, for a big man, he looks graceful and athletic out there. In fact our color guy, when Smith was on the bases, was surprised that Smith carried his 200 pounds so lightly. I stand ready to be convinced about Lilly and Guerrier. Please do not misunderstand…I am not putting the Dodgers down. I just get amped up about certain players (like Smith) and I like a good narrative. And Smith, for me, supplies a really good one. Sort of like “Mr. Smith goes to LA.”

I passed Smith on the path at Camelback. The 6’1" seems accurate, but he looked more like 230 to me. Point taken about good story, but the Dodgers also need to actually compete. A 28 year old position player that hasn’t cracked AAA yet and still strikes out a lot at AA seems extremely unlikely to be competitive in the majors.

But Gimenez has at least cracked AAA. Oh, you mean…

Ha ha

I actually thought about Gimenez when I typed that response. He has accumulated about three half-seasons at AAA. He made a steady climb in the Astros org until he got hurt.

I found a Vector baseball card the other day looking through some of my old boxes. It mentioned that scouts loved his defense. I believe it was a 2007 Topps Heritage. I think it said that because his offensive stats at the time were crap. But it’s cool. We signed him for his bat.

I think

i dont think Gibbons will make the team, i like the way gwynn is playing and i think we will have 4 outfielders not including any utility players. Jansen will make the team, as for elbert and troncoso they arent performing but i still think they will be in the 25. I really like the versatility of Hector giminez and i see him making the team because of Blake being on the DL. if we really need a starter i feel Ely should get it but elbert needs to be in the minors he is just walking to many players.
