Where Do The Dodgers Rank?
Today is rankings day, apparently. The Dodgers rank...
- 11th in Baseball America's organizational talent rankings, which is based on all prospect-eligible players heading into 2011
- 23rd in FanGraphs' organizational rankings, which combine present talent, future talent, financial resources, and baseball operations.
- 3rd in 2010 sales of all licensed MLB products, behind the Yankees and Red Sox. The Dodgers have nobody in the top 20 jersey sales of 2010, however.
- 3rd in MLB franchise value, at $800 million, per Forbes. Maury Brown has all the details at Biz of Baseball.
Today's Game
The Dodgers and White Sox play today for the fourth and final time at Camelback Ranch this spring. Ted Lilly sees his first Cactus League action since March 12, making his third "A" game start of the spring. Lilly also threw 72 pitches in a minor league game on Friday at Camelback Ranch.
Following Lilly on the mound for the Dodgers will be Ramon Troncoso, Scott Elbert, Lance Cormier, Travis Schlichting, and Ron Mahay. All but Mahay will be working the second day of back-to-back outings.
John Danks starts for Chicago, and is scheduled to be followed by Matt Thornton, Will Ohman, and Sergio Santos.

BA
I somehow missed the #11 ranking by BA. That’s great news to me. Broxton might net us some more picks after this season. Onward and upward!
What were we ranked last year?
Wasn’t it towards the bottom? Did this years draft put us up this high, or is it the progression of talent. With alot of our top prospects (going into the season, especially pitchers) having bad years last year, I thought this would go down..
Withrow, Miller, and Martin struggled.
But Rubby, Trayvon, Sands, and Webster all improved.
That + the excellent draft = #11.

Yeah, I’ll probably spend some more time here now that the season’s getting underway. I don’t have particularly high hopes or anything, but I’m hoping for at least a better year than last year. I’m curious, what do people think the Dodgers’ record is gonna look like this year? Do we win 85 games, do we finish under .500, what?

We’ll have a season prediction thread pretty soon, but I was forced to wager and if the over/under line was 85, I’d probably bet under. I can see the pitching keeping the team afloat, but 90 wins seems like a reach.

Oh, I’d bet the under as well. I just don’t know what a realistic projection would be though. Last year felt pretty miserable, but maybe we are truly a .500ish team?

Eric speculated some cuts may be forthcoming. Might we see Kapler cut, so he can try to latch on somewhere else? I always like these sort of gentlemen’s agreements between players and teams. We’ll give you a shot; if not, we wish you the best elsewhere. Or will he haunt AAA?
I’m sure the Dodgers would find a plash to stash him in the minors, but that’ll be his call to accept it.

For all the talk of ranking prospects being a crapshoot, the periods where the Dodgers ranked in the top 6 for a few years in a row yielded a bunch of legit big leaguers.
84-86 — Somewhat weak, but includes Ramon Martinez and Orel Hershiser among others. Greg Brock was a major fizzle.
89-91 — Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Raul Mondesi, Pedro Martinez. Hell, even John Wetteland and Henry Rodriguez. Yeah, they worked out okay.
95-98 — Paul Konerko, Eric Gagne, Ted Lilly, not sure if Chan Ho counted for 95 or 96. Karim Garcia and Billy Ashley… oops.
04-08 — Our core so far looks pretty good. We can expect at least a few of Kemp, Kershaw, Billz, Ethier and ahem Santana to go on to HoF ballot careers at least, if not HoF careers.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

I would be surprised if any of them have HOF type careers
mainly due to the fact that the Los Angeles Dodgers have only produced ONE HOF player on their own in their 50+ year existence.
Now that will probably go up by a couple with Pedro and Piazza but I don’t see anyone like that wit the possible exception of Kershaw who would really have to begin to dominate soon.
He said Hall of Fame ballot, which I took to mean will last a while then get on there in the Todd Zeile sense.

Hall of Famers on the whole are hard to come by, but I would be satisfied if Bills were to put together something like a Hershiser career or if Ethier was as effective as Konerko.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Just thinking
the Padres have had more homegrown HOF in Ozzie Smith, Dave Winfield, and Tony Gwynn, though Smith only played his 3+ years there, but much more then Pedro played as a Dodger.
The Giants have had zero.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

Depends on what you consider
Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepada were all originally signed by the NY Giants but debuted after the club moved to San Francisco.
Gaylord Perry was signed and debuted with San Francisco.
It was my fault. I meant to title my response to the Padres thing “Over that same period” and then comment “The Giants have had zero.” I failed, so then we had to rehash people on the Giants who didn’t suck. Let’s talk about Scott Garrelts instead.

"Most people eat fast food in this country," said Steve Ells, the founder and chairman of Chipotle. "I’ve always argued that because food is served quickly and effectively doesn’t mean it can’t be good. We’re making sustainable food accessible, and a part of everyday eating."

A few years ago on Sunday Night Baseball, the trivia question concerned great power-speed players. They were looking for… oh, I don’t remember… 300/300 club? I don’t remember the exact figures they wanted, except that if was for sure 300HR.
Anyway in the whole conversation as Miller and Morgan “tried to guess” and then revealed the answers, Rickey Henderson’s name never came up. The greatest power/speed player of all time (except maybe Bonds and he doesn’t count) and his name didn’t come up because he only hit 297 HR.

Are you referring to Garvey as HoFer? Because as I recall, both he and EK were in the .790 range.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
And short of moving Ethier to first base, I don’t see how the Dodgers will acquire a first baseman who can put up an OPS of greater than .800 (in the near term.)
I guess the answer is that if you can’t buy a firstbaseman who can do that, and you can’t develop one, might as well let Sands do it for the major league minimum and use the Loney savings to upgrade elsewhere.

Does it, that is amazing, he was consistent after he got the full time gig in 74. Maybe the best part of the Dodger infield, they did pretty much the same thing every year, none of this blowing cold and hot year to year BS.
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
Garvey is not as good as we once thought, but far better than he is regarded by most now
Only thing you can hit him for is that he didn’t walk – a fairly big thing, but still better than most people regard him now – which is like the 5th or 6th best hitter on those teams
by Hollywood Joe on Mar 23, 2011 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes, he went from being over-rated to under-rated, he is exactly a Hall of the Very Good.

I was gonna say: Ethier is Mr. Streaky but I think he’s got to be more likely than Kemp to put up a 900 OPS.
That’s the thing about Ethier. If he has a shitty season, he’ll have an 850 OPS. If he has a great season, he’ll have a 900 OPS. The window of what he might do is just so small.
Kemp… anything is possible. 900 OPS? Sure. Unlikely, but sure. 760 OPS, just like last year? Sure, again, unlikely, I think, but sure. Anything in between? Sure.

Ooh. I kind of like that idea. It would seem to be a way of weighting OBP a little bit more in the realm than OPS would. That seems on the surface to be a relatively simple metric that might be a better indicator of offensive production.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
would you
remove the decimal points, last time I checked multiplying numbers that begin with decimal points only give you smaller numbers.
But it loses the best part about OPS, which is it’s really easy to calculate in your head.
Once you get to OTS, you might as well just use wOBA or something.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 23, 2011 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Ran some quick numbers.
From 2006-2010 OTS had a higher correlation to runs scored than OPS, but the difference is so slight (R-squared .909 versus .9048) that it’s not worth the extra brain power.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 23, 2011 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Some people can do three digit multiplication in their heads… And it is a simple computation with a calculator. But I completely agree that OPS is still more valuable as a quick reference than OTS.
And, bh, no, you wouldn’t, necessarily. If someone had a .400 OBP and a .500 SLUG, they would have a .4*.5 or .200 OTS. Yes, the numbers are smaller than either of the original numbers, but bigger than .350*.450=.1575, which is smaller. If you multiply two bigger numbers, you always get a bigger product. Where it becomes interesting is the ways when one is bigger and the other is smaller. So a .300/.500 would give you .150 and a .400/.400 would give .160. Both have an OPS of .800, but the .400/.400 line is more valuable.
*I think this assumes that the SLUG is higher, but there may be data that suggests that OBP without power sucks just as much as power without OBP.

B Ref has a stat bolded if you lead the league in that category. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a link instead and that if you click on it, it displays the top ten players in that category for that season.
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
That would be pretty sweet; a list when mousing over would be cool too, but that seems unwieldy.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 23, 2011 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I like it, but it’s not as intuitive as clicking on the MVP links, so I can see why you wouldn’t do it.

Basically you either ugly up the page by adding underlined links everywhere, or you keep them bold which can end in someone accidentally clicking and ending up somewhere with out knowing why.

Okay if anyone is bored.
In 1971 the Dodgers had three players in the top 16 for MVP
Kind of easy for two of the three but was very surprised by the guy who came in 6th.
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
Ha, I would have totally thought Dick Allen was one of the easy ones, too. Not even a vote.

I’ll go for the easy ones — Maury Wills and Willie Davis?
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Yes, but I would have thought of them as hard, since neither had the year the other guy had, but he was a pitcher
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
They were two guys I know have 72 Topps cards of who were good. I forgot that was the year they had Dick Allen. I went and looked up Maury’s numbers and have no clue how anyone thought that was MVP-caliber, or even top-6 MVP-caliber. Wow.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
I lived it and have no idea. 71 was a great year, we gave the Giants a real scare but fell one game short. Giants went 37-12 to start the season then hit a June swoon. I remember one game in June that the Dodgers were playing on TV and the Giants were struggling and Vinny chimed in that the world was coming to an end for the Giants because Willie Mays had just dropped a fly ball.
They played below .500 ball after June 1st but that huge lead was just good enough.

After 9 walks to the first 19 batters this spring
Elbert has no walks in his last 9 batters (one hit, 8 outs, 5 K)
Still doubt it, Elbert still has options, and, well, walking one out of every three batters is better than walking every other one, but still really bad.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 23, 2011 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s close to a lock IMO.
Mattingly loves him from the AFL and they can easily chalk up the early walks to “working on stuff” in the spring. Elbert has improved all spring and, even when he was walking people, his stuff was still filthy and nobody has really hit him.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 23, 2011 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions
I think that’s right, and what’s more, I think it was the plan all along. Mahay was brought in as insurance in case (a) Elbert shit the bed AND (b) they decided that they really did need another lefty besides Kuo. The fact that Elbert has righted the ship and Mahay has looked like he’s 40 years old means they get to go with Plan A.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
by Humma Kavula on Mar 23, 2011 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions
But if this was anyone but Elbert we’d be freaking out over Mattingly making a decision based on 9 batters faced while ignoring how bad Elbert has been for the past couple years.
Also I can’t think of the last time the Dodgers went with borderline guy with options over the veteran NRI.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 23, 2011 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions
It’s not about these 9 batters faced though. Elbert has been throwing on the side, too, and has been heavily monitored. The stuff has been good, and Mattingly speaks of Elbert glowingly.
They don’t pick the veteran NRI with a terrible spring.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 23, 2011 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Adding on to Eric’s point — I think Mattingly wanted to give Elbert the job before ST started. In that sense, the job was his to lose. That said they knew that there was a chance that he would lose it, so they made a backup plan. When Elbert first did poorly, it looked like they might have to go with another plan, but he is righting the ship and showing he is worthy of their confidence. I do not think this is a case of taking ST stats and saying you got the job.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
by Humma Kavula on Mar 23, 2011 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions
All reasonable stuff. It’s just weird to think the team is behind Elbert when they’ve shown no signs of it in the past and the last we saw of him he abandoned the team.

heh, Dylan Hernandez
“This came back when he started to increase his velocity the other day,” Colletti said. “So rather than go through this all season long and wander back and forth, back and forth, this was the best course of action.” With Padilla slated to be a reliever, his rehabilitation process presumably will not be as lengthy as it would be if he were a starter. If not for Colletti, the situation likely would have been portrayed far differently in this space, as rookie manager Don Mattingly’s evasive responses earlier created confusion. In his morning briefing with reporters, Mattingly showed he had a long way to go before anyone started calling him Donnie Press Conference.

The Dodgers are now 11-16-1
If they lose the rest of their exhibition games, they will be 11-24-1, which is a .319 win percentage. They need two wins, or a win and a tie to avoid the Joey zone.
You are about to enter another dimension -- a dimension not only of fake game wins and losses but of predictive value --

Organizational Rankings
I compiled my own, hopefully more sensible than Fangraphs, organizational rankings – as an exercise in seeing how good of a ranking system I could come up with in less than 30 minutes. The Dodgers jump from #23Org in the Fangraphs list to #12 in my rankings. All my spreadsheet work is open source, so no extra points to the Dodgers for running a blog.
Two issues -
Counting wins from three years ago seems kinda pointless. The 2008 and 2009 Dodgers don’t resemble this team all that much.
Wins per dollar is completely irrelevant, but it gets a 15% ranking. I know you’re trying to measure GM strength by this, but the system says that Cashman and Epstein are worse GMs than Ed Wade and Chris Antonelli.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 23, 2011 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Thanks for the comment. Wins are weighted
2011 weight of 4
2010 weight of 3
2009 weight of 2
2008 weight of 1
One size fits all but probably as good as anything Fangraphs uses.
Wins (above replacement) per dollar is not necessarily there to evaluate GMs 100%. Just how efficiently money is spent. Hard to evaluate how good the $200M GMs are until they have to walk in the Rays moccasins. Thanks for the input though. :)

Most of the kids who are of age aren’t exactly huge baseball fans. By that, I mean big enough fans to want to come see a televised game between two teams they don’t care about. I'll do it
5 years ago, NY Times did a story on Thames (then a Detroit Tiger
DETROIT, Oct. 21 — Veterine Thames watches the world from a custom hospital bed in the back room of a modest yet bustling five-bedroom brick-and-aluminum-sided ranch in Louisville, Miss. She cannot move her legs, she cannot move her torso and she cannot grasp anything. She has been in this condition for more than 24 years.
But Thames can talk, she can see and she has persevered. She reared five children, mostly on her own, while lying on her back. One of them is Marcus Thames, who plays for the American League champion Detroit Tigers
The real crime was making a lazy “man, this guys name is hard to pronounce” joke.

A year to rebound...
I’m a little surprised at the gloomy predictions for the Dodgers this year. It was a classic whole team meltdown and I expect good things this year. Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Broxton, Billingsley and Furcal had it pretty tough (not to mention starting the season depending on Manny, Martin and ? for the 4th and 5th starters). Manny and Martin obviously won’t disappoint us this year and the rest of the boys should all have better stats. I expect a great start out of the gate and a lot less blown leads from the bullpen. 89 – 90 wins should put us back in the playoffs and then anything can happen (take a look at what happened with the Giants last year).
