New Respect (and Pity) for James Loney
James Loney don't get no respect. He's a pretty good hitter, although the HRs are not exactly his strong point, he's pretty good defensively, and the quiet way he goes about his business shows a certain degree of humility. All of this adds up to a Dangerfieldian lack of respect---he ain't flashy, he ain't fleshy, he don't have a big head. All of this is a preface to saying why I've decided to give him a lot more "respect," and a little bit of pity. He must be considered the best sport on the Dodgers. And I'll tell you why after the jump.
Have you seen him modeling the "sleeveless blanket" on the Dodgers website? If that man doesn't look ridiculous, and morosely aware that he looks ridiculous, in that get-up, I don't know who does. James, James, James.....this is no way to get the chicks. This is no way to show that you have testosterone coursing through your blood. I don't know who put James up to this, but someone, a friend, should have told James, "Look, I know that you are willing to do anything to help the club, but this is ridiculous." James, get rid of that goddamn thing.

James Loney is an exceedingly average-to-below first baseman. He’d probably rank somewhere in the bottom 10 among major league starting first basemen, even with his defensive value. A team that is stacked at other positions can compete with a mediocre first baseman. The Dodgers cannot.
In other words, he is baseball’s version of a Snuggie. He does have some value if used in the right spots, but if you want to be taken seriously, you don’t masquerade with him front and center.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Loney's my favorite Dodger
Stats-wise, Loney may be everything Nolij said he was, but in my eyes he’’ll always be the guy who reminds me of my elder son: They’re both tall, long-waisted, gangly , soft-spoken and possesing an unusual sense of humor.
I wish James the best of luck in 2011. Go Dodgers!
