Mahay Released, Ely Optioned, Big League Camp Down To 38
Before today's game, John Ely was optioned and Eugenio Velez was reassigned to minor league camp. Ely is still a candidate, along with Tim Redding, for the fifth starter job, a spot that won't be needed until April 12. Redding, who experienced back problems yesterday, threw today without any problems and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session tomorrow, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.
In addition, Ron Mahay asked for, and was granted his release, as he had an out clause in his contract if he wasn't added to the roster by yesterday. There are now 38 players remaining in big league camp, 18 pitchers and 20 position players.
Clayton Kershaw makes his final spring tuneup today as the Dodgers are in Peoria for their final Cactus League road game, against the Padres. Kershaw is expected to have a short outing today in his final tuneup before his Thursday start against the Giants.

Mat Latos was scheduled to start for San Diego today, as well as opening day, but he has a sore shoulder. Tim Stauffer will start in place of Latos on opening day, but today that honor goes to Dustin Moseley.

I keep sayin it. Big NL Sleeper RT @BucsInsider James McDonald line vs. AAA Yankees: 3IP, 4H,1R,1ER, 0BB, 3SO..44 pitches total (28 strikes)
This makes me feel wonderful. #notreally
I think McDonald has reached the so underrated he’s overrated point in fantasy. Even if he’s decent and not the lamentable dust man he was on the Dodgers is worth more than a back of the rotation slot?

Don’t play fantasy baseball, so wouldn’t know the specifics. But generally, good fantasy players are also good in real life.
by silverwidow on Mar 26, 2011 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Huh, weird since you were so in to fantasy football.
McDonalds big issue is that he’s not gonna get wins since he’s a Pirate and his WHIP will probably be lousy because of being a Pirate and walk rate. At that point, you have to hope McDonald continues to perform to even get help in two categories, and unless you have a deep league, and ERA in the high threes-low fours isn’t that good.

And hell, I play in a deep league and unless McDonald improves tremendously he’d be my 9th starter at best and 11th starter at worst. The average team doesn’t have room for him.

Berry also said on the Bill Simmons podcast that Matt Kemp was a breakout candidate this year because Kemp’s no longer dating Rihanna.

what I want to know is how they justify dropping a team eleven spots.

No Cliff Lee

What's this about?
Tony Jackson expands a bit on the Ely situation:
“If Garland isn’t ready by April 12], either Ely or non-roster right-hander Tim Redding will be called up to make that start. But Mattingly said on Friday that both of those pitchers will begin the season in the minors, so Ely’s demotion had nothing to do with the fact he was torched for six runs over four innings by the Seattle Mariners in a Cactus League game on Friday night.
“The move does mean a slight change in Ely’s immediate future, though. While Mattingly had planned to bring Ely to Los Angeles next week to start the final spring training game Wednesday night against the Mariners, Ely now will stay behind and make his final start in minor league camp that day, with top pitching prospect Rubby De La Rosa going against the Mariners at Dodger Stadium. De La Rosa is not a candidate for the Opening Day roster.”
So, if it’s just “procedural”, as others have said, allowing for an extra positional player until a 5th starter is needed April 12 and can be called up then, why should it affect who starts the last ST game against the Mariners in LA? Whoever it is – Ely or Rubby – is just “dressing” with the major league team and goes back to the minors when that game is over. Whoever it is is coming along just for that Mariners game. So why Rubby rather than Ely if it’s just “procedural”. Ely could be asked to start it no matter what his status, and Rubby could be asked to start it whether Ely is on the big team or not .
So what’s it all about?
For Rubby, he gets his first taste of Dodger Stadium.
For Ely, he gets to stay back and work on stuff and work in a more controlled environment.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 26, 2011 1:05 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I get that. But I don’t see why Rubby couldn’t have come along and pitched anyway, even if Ely were still with the team. I suppose it’s because this way Ely still gets to pitch on his rotation day. If he were with the big team, I suppose he’d have to be given the ball on Wednesday, so there wouldn’t be room for Rubby also to pitch?
The plan was for Rubby to come to LA anyway. There will be enough innings since the starters besides Lilly will be on short outings.

Baseball Tonight Fantasy Draft Special
Token female just predicted 175+ K’s for James McDonald. Do we know that guy?
She’s only there because she has boobs and took a sports medicine class once. I’m not basing my draft on her advice.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
True, I don’t know the full story. She may have slept with someone too.
Actually, when she was introduced, Steve Berthiaume referred to her as the expert on injuries or something like that.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Feel free to peruse her credentials

So by “took a sports medicine class once” you mean qualified physical therapist.
And we all know how women be sleepin there way to the top am I right?
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 26, 2011 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, come on, now
The sleeping her way comment was obviously just snark. And there are tens of thousands of qualified physical therapists out there, and probably hundreds with more substantial qualifications than hers. Her baseball analysis is pretty weak (although she is substantially more technical when she does their football stuff) and it is abundantly clear that she has the job, at least in large part to her being a reasonably attractive woman.

It works that way for men too
do you really think the ESPN Analysts are really the best analysts?
These hands will always be rough
just to bring things back to the middle, there are plenty of analysts which only have a job because they used to play baseball. Lots of under qualified “journalists” on ESPN

Yep
I think the real problem here is Nolij was watching ESPN and is expecting legit sports news and analysis, and not entertainment.

actually
She’s been doing this for a long time, has a physical therapy background, was part of Rotowire for many years. Also is used for fantasy football.
by bhsportsguy on Mar 26, 2011 1:27 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
she
Is board-certified physical therapist, has a BA from Princeton (in unrelated field) and her degree in physical therfromis from University of Miami. She taught at Kansas University and is probably more qualified to talk about sports injuries than Matthew Berry us to talk about fantasy sports.
Now whether or not you should take her advice on what player to take is certainly an open question but her being on that show should not be an issue.

For the record, I have given up all grammar pet peeves. I will continue to use good grammar as best as I can, and I think good grammar should be taught, and I think that if you’re trying to be professional it is best to use good grammar.
I used to get on my high horse about things like an apostrophe-s to make a plural or quotes out of place. But no more; life’s too short. Frankly, if I can discern the writer’s meaning, that’s all that matters. I won’t go so far as to say that incorrect grammar is right, but when I see people mock bad grammar on Facebook/Twitter, I can’t help but wonder if the mocker has nothing better to do.
In fact, my comment the other day was criticizing people who called out the quotes out of place and mocked it, not the other way around.

The pieces are falling into place
Some rather high-significance late spring training appearances planned for the bullpen today. Hope what we already believe is confirmed.
NRI count
8/20 still in camp, though Redding appears to be injured. Rubby isn’t making the roster, but has had an A+ spring. Cormier has one last shot today I suppose. On the offense side, CastoroMiles and Kapler/Oeltjen remain, though Oeltjen has no chance to stay. Looks to me like two NRIs will make the club.
Redding is apparently healthy again. He pitched today and will throw a bullpen tomorrow.

Florida just managed to remove all the inefficiencies in cheating in both sports. The football boosters saved up money for bail money instead of payouts. It was more efficient that way.

Im in the just happy to be there phase. I picked Duke to beat Arizona in my bracket pools, but Im extremely glad Zona was able to dominate like that. To win the 2nd and 3rd round by a combined 3 points, and then to blast Duke like that was something special to witness.

Looks like Freddy Garcia got the 5th starter gig for the Yankees and Bart’s Colon will be in the bullpen for the Yankees. The Red Sox must be giddy.

Rather big dropoff…Targeting Cliff Lee and settling for Freddy Garcia.
Did the Yankees do anything this offseason of significance?
Who's pitching?
Gameday has Broxton pitching, but he was already pinch-hit for by Kapler. Who’s actually pitching now?
Applause in the press box

Why would you combine UCLA and Butler when the two schools are almost entirely different? Unless you are just trying to foment anger and make yourself feel superior? Which is pretty much you’re entire reason for existence on this planet? And something at which you fail miserably?
I love angry Bob Timmerman.
Such a tool.
If you dont see the parallels between Florida’s run in the tourneys having gone thru both Butler/UCLA…then I feel sorry for you.
Each time Florida has beaten either team in the NCAA tourney, they’ve advanced to the National Title game. If you dont find that interesting, I dont care. Dont respond to my post.
I just checked it out and caught up after returning home
apparently what I missed:
Some great pitching from LA.
Juan Uribe having a good day in honor of his TBLA preview.
A pointless and amusing beanball “brawl”.
Did I miss anything?
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Hits from Paul, Ethier, Gwynne, Kemp, Loney, Barajas, Carroll (2), as well as the 2 from Uribe including an HR. Excellent pitching from Kershaw, Guerrier, Broxton, Cormier – but not so much from Elbert, just pulled after giving up 3 hits and a run in only 1 out. A very interesting talk with Ned Colletti stretching over 2 or 2.5 full innings, where he basically came down in favor of sticking with players the Dodgers bring up themselves. A very good game, so far. even with all the changes since 7th inning.
Nice thanks
bummer about Elbert. Sounded like he was a relatively safe bet for team but you wonder…
They will probably say better Elbert give up hits than walks…
MacDougal seems like he’s a solid bet tho…

I mean its the first time he has been hit much
all his other problems where walks, so as long as he isn’t walking people I don’t think it matters that much.

Elbert throwing strikes (mostly)
But getting hit. HR on hanging slider to start it off, and later on gives up a single on a good pitch on the inside corner.
