Dodgers Option Troncoso, Appear To Take A Ride On The Redding
The Dodgers today optioned Ramon Troncoso to minor league camp, which, coupled with the optioning of Travis Schlichting after yesterday's game, bring the total number of players in big league camp down to 36 (16 pitches, 20 position players). It also means the final two bullpen spots are between Mike MacDougal, Scott Elbert, and Lance Cormier.
In addition, it appears Tim Redding has beaten out John Ely for the fifth starter gig, at least until Jon Garland returns. This morning Mattingly said he has Redding in line to pitch on April 10, not April 12 as the schedule would have allowed, to give Clayton Kershaw and Chad Billingsley an extra day of rest. However, Redding won't start the season with the club, as he will begin with Triple A Albuquerque, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.
Today's Game
The Dodgers complete their Cactus League schedule today with a game at Camelback Ranch against the Indians. Chad Billingsley makes his final tuneup before his Friday start at Dodger Stadium against the Giants.
Fausto Carmona gets the start for Cleveland.

Ladies and Gentlemen
Our annual Russ Ortiz of the year is named!
McDougal is much worse in my opinion.

Redding and McDougal weren’t punchlines at any point like Ortiz was, I just can’t feel bad about this.

Redding has a temporary Monopoly on the 5th starter’s spot?
by 68elcamino427 on Mar 27, 2011 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions
Perhaps very temporary
maybe only the one start. Or it could be he pitches well his first game, which buys him enough of a leash to cough up 3-4 games before they figure out hey, that first game might’ve been a fluke!
If only we had used notable options Jon Ely or Carlos “Monk” Monasterios instead.

Not saying there are really any better options
Redding probably is the best option for a short-term 5th starter.
Well, he was pretty terrible after he was used 14 times in 20 days at the beginning of last season. His sinker didn’t sink, and he gave up too many home runs.
But yeah, I’m not super excited about Mike MacDougal. I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

So Tron Tron and Corey Wade have some shared experiences with similar results?
by 68elcamino427 on Mar 27, 2011 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Fair enough. I’m not up in arms or anything. Maybe if we close our eyes just enough, MacDougal will resemble Jeff Weaver and we’ll all be satisfied.
And such is the nature of the very fickle #5 spot in the starting rotation.
Garland, paging Mr. Garland!
Mr. Padilla, are you ready yet?

Do we know if Redding gets his full salary (pro-rated) guaranteed if he pitches on April 19th

Not sure. I am trying to get to the bottom of that.

I have a hard time getting upset that our #7 8 and 9 starters aren’t good.

Speaking of Silva
Mike Quade was none too happy about Silva blaming the pitching coach for Silva’s release:
Mike Quade on Carlos Silva: “He’s dead f—-ing wrong, OK, about my pitching coach. And I have no f—-ing time for that.”

So its entirely possible that the Final 4 could be made up of an 8 seeded mid-major, and 11th seeded mid major that wouldn’t have made the tournament last year (and probably shouldnt have this year), a team that finished 9th in their own conference, and one of UNC/UK. That’s crazy.
and we’re supposed to believe the team that finished 9th in their own conference is representative of the top four in college basketball
by Josie Becker on Mar 27, 2011 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions
I dont even know what to believe about what is going on in college basketball.
by UCLADodger32 on Mar 27, 2011 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions
If the Big East had a balanced schedule, you could actually get a better line on how everyone should have finished. With a 16-team conference, there’s no way you’re going to get a 30-game round robin.
by Bob Timmermann on Mar 27, 2011 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions
UConn had two games in conference play against two of the Big East’s best schools in Notre Dame and Louisville. The played Pitt and West Virginia once, both on the road.
by Bob Timmermann on Mar 27, 2011 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Are they doing a complete round robin in the
Pac 12 next year, I know that the division format is only for football right?
Just 18 games in the Pac-12 basketball schedule. Seven home and home matchups and four single games.
by Bob Timmermann on Mar 27, 2011 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions
so Notre Dame and Louisville are better than UConn?
by Josie Becker on Mar 27, 2011 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Some people thought so. It’s all a matter of timing.
by Bob Timmermann on Mar 27, 2011 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions
This – after this tournament I am even more convinced it is all a matter of timing. The regular season really is meaningless as long as you aren’t completely pathetic. The worst part about this is that the NCAA will use this to justify even more play-in games. The best case scenario would have been for all of the play-in teams to lose in the real 1st round. Once they open this thing up further, there really won’t be any point to the regular season.

Outside of
possibly offending anyone who can speak Chinese, Joe Posnanski writes a nice piece about his thoughts about statistics.
I still will never understand where all that velocity came from. He was a middling starting pitcher prospect with us for years, then as soon as we traded him (or right before) he started hitting high 90s on the gun. Sometimes things just click I suppose.
If he moved from starting to relieving
That would be the source of his velocity increase.

In a related move, Cory Wade was sent to minor league camp by Tampa Bay this week.

We will see our starters for one at bat and then this will devolve into a minor league game?
Apparently a bunch of players have already left for LA.

Steve Kerr said VCU is playing with “house money.” So that means that all the backups and scrubs are in? Right?
no it means that the school is poised to make a lot more money than they put into this season
by Josie Becker on Mar 27, 2011 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Greatest VCU alum to play in the majors
Would it be Brandon Inge? Or Cla Meredith?
I still think of Meredith in his 2006 unhittable version and Vin Scully reveling in saying his name.
Now they are guaranteed
Not only will now have the two highest numbered seeds playing in a Final Four game, you are guaranteed to have at least an 8 seed in the Final game
But how will that affect Florida’s chances?

This year, the four teams combined will have
over 35 losses. in 2008, when all 4 No. 1 seeds made the final four, they had 8 losses combined.
At the moment, Nate Silver has UConn as the new favorite to be the champion at 30%.

So with the 5th spotting going on the 10th
and the extra day off for Kid K, it looks to me like Kershaw will pitch on April 21st against the Braves, which is sweet for me as I will be there. In the throwback unis as well.
Hating the Giants for going on a half century and counting!
LOL @ Cormier
Lance Cormier, the only other contender after Ramon Troncoso was optioned to Minor League camp Sunday morning, was asked to accept a Minor League assignment, but he said he told the club he would not.
Cormier has an out in his contract starting Sunday, but he said he was not yet a free agent and that “the ball is in their court.”
Since this format started, no Final Four has never had the highest seed be a No. 3
Butler was tied for the regular season conference title, all 4 teams in the Final Four won their conference tournaments.
It appears there are 3 possible winners in the TBLA Bracket challenge
Josh Johnson wins if UConn wins the NCAA title
Mel Gibson’s Liver wins if UConn makes the final game but loses to either VCU or Butler
Catch-57 wins if Kentucky beats UConn
They are all hilarious.

There is one contest I can win (I didn’t enter the TBLA one) as long as Kentucky beats UConn. I would win despite having ZERO teams in the Final Four.
by Bob Timmermann on Mar 27, 2011 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions
No matter who wins the games on Saturday
the two seed numbers will be the highest combined since this format started.
If Kentucky beats UConn, it will be the first time a 4 seed with the lowest seed in the championship game. The only time a 3 seed was the lowest seed in Final game was in 1989 when No. 3 Michigan beat No. 3 Seton Hall.
What a strange tournament it has been.

VCU has to be the largest school in the country to not have football as a sport.
They have 32,000 students.
