Dodgers Opening Day Roster: Gimenez, Paul, DeJesus Make The Team, Elbert Among Final Cuts
The Dodgers today finalized their opening day 25-man roster for their game Thursday night against the Giants at Dodger Stadium, with the news coming during DodgerTalk after tonight's game. Thinking back to the beginning of spring, there are quite a few surprises.
- Starting Pitchers (4): Clayton Kershaw, Chad Billingsley, Ted Lilly, Hiroki Kuroda
- Relief Pitchers (7): Jonathan Broxton, Hong-Chih Kuo, Matt Guerrier, Kenley Jansen, Blake Hawksworth, Mike MacDougal, Lance Cormier
- Catchers (3): Rod Barajas, A.J. Ellis, Hector Gimenez
- Infielders (6): James Loney, Jamey Carroll, Rafael Furcal, Juan Uribe, Aaron Miles, Ivan DeJesus
- Outfielders (5): Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Marcus Thames, Tony Gwynn Jr., Xavier Paul
- Disabled List (5): Casey Blake, Jon Garland, Dioner Navarro, Vicente Padilla, Jay Gibbons
The Dodgers had three non-roster players make the team in Miles, MacDougal, and Cormier. The Dodgers designated John Lindsey and Jon Link for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster, per Jimmy Bramlett of LAist.
In addition, Jansen, Ellis, Paul, DeJesus, and Gimenez are on opening day rosters for the first time in their careers. Hawksworth, Paul, and Gimenez are out of options.

I get everyone except
for Cormier. I haven’t really seen him pitch, but he had more walks than strikeouts last year.. How does he make it, and not Elbert?
Elbert also had more walks than strikeouts last year.

Not sure what you guys mean... Yes Donnie likes him, and I think Ned was hoping Elbert would succeed too
Ultimately it came down to Elbert just was not consistent this Spring. The job was clearly his to take and he didn’t pitch well enough. It would be much easier to add him to the 25 man than add an NRI like Cormier. I also guarantee the team’s manager has plenty of say in the opening 25 man.

He pitched against major league batters, while Elbert nearly did the same against minor leaguers.

Or we could cut Cormier and keep Link in the system. The stockpiling arms argument loses some steam with this decision.

Who goes down for who when the players come back?
In my dream world, Ellis goes down for Gibbons, Miles will GTFO for Blake, Garland gets Paul’s spot (sorry, but i don’t like your upside), Padilla gets Cormier’s spot (FOREVER), and Dioner Navarro is kicked to the curb.

Im more bummed about losing Link like this than I should be

there's a decent chance he clears waivers
especially since his future role is unclear (starter or reliever). Maybe the Dodgers did that one purpose

He’ll be 29 in two weeks. He’s roughly John Lindsey. A man who inspires Corey Smith.

though Smith is a former first round draft choice and
for some reason looking at his at bats this year and Lindsey’s last year, I come away more impressed with Smith. Realizing it’s likely fool’s gold and there’s a reason he’s not taken that seriously these days.

Did this caller even know who the hell Corey Smith was before tonight?

Didn’t know who Rubby was either.

It was a weird question, because he started off with the question, “Whatever happened to Corey Smith?”

Link was the one surprise, eh? And not a huge surprise.
Never would’ve predicted 3 catchers a month ago, and certainly not both Ellis and Gimenez. But such is spring, and injuries, and the flux of a roster. In a month all his could look very different.

mintxcore would approve!
but seriously folks, Gimenez’s bat looks impressive. Not 100% convinced he’ll be all that when it counts though. His defense is supposed to be solid though I didn’t see much of that this spring either. But it’d be a steal if he ends up this good. I still root for AJ, too, though.
night all!

If someone claims Link, he gets added to their 40-man and can be optioned, etc.
by silverwidow on Mar 30, 2011 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions
yes to 40-man. The new team can option him if they choose
by Eric Stephen on Mar 30, 2011 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Went the Dodgers sent him down, did that already count as an option for the year, or do they not start the tally until Opening Day?
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
The Dodgers optioned Link on March 15, but it hasn’t yet been 20 days. I have to look, but I’m not sure whether it counts or not if you get DFA’d within the 20 days.

Thanks both of you
That makes sense. Can they still trade him if someone claims him?
Yes, they have 10 days to waive, trade or release the player.
by silverwidow on Mar 30, 2011 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions
40 man
if he is claimed off waivers, I believe he could be assigned to the minors if he clears since this is probably the first time he has been outrighted.
by bhsportsguy on Mar 30, 2011 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions
they do have to put him on their 25 man

Excuse me while I shill
Prime Ticket will have a one hour pregame show at 4 p.m. I would think they’ll cover whatever pregame stuff that will be going on before ESPN takes over at 5 p.m.
Barry Zito went to the hospital tonight after being involved in a traffic accident, but he seems OK, per Hank Schulman.
So, with the win, the Dodgers spring record was 14-21? That would put them at .400, well above the Joeyjoeza Line. Thank goodness.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
For what its worth, the Dodgers had the worst run differential in the Cactus league, and third-worst total, with a Pythagorean winning percentage of .386.
What does that mean? Bupkes.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."

Yes
But other variations are also accepted. Yiddish doesn’t use the same alphabet, so there are multiple ways to transliterate.

Just four starting pitchers?
Hmm…

Kuo better get ready
The difference between Cormier and Elbert is negligible enough that I really don’t understand why the team would go into the season with Kuo as their only lefty reliever, especially with his past workload concerns. Even if its a temporary situation it is pretty far from ideal.
