Missing Persons
All the stories about the 2011 Dodgers roster talk about who made the team (deJesus, etc), but there is very little about where the other people went. I gather Juan Castro has to decide whether to go to Alb. and Kapler has to decide whether he will retire or not. I think he should, but old dreams die hard. Rubbie looked good vs the Mariners (although that is not hard to do), but I have heard no words about the guy who hit a monster HR, my man Corey Smith.
Yes, I know he has spent 11 years in the minors. Yes, I know he has a rep about striking out a lot (not supported by last year, when he only struck out 74 times). But that guy can hit, he looks like a ball player to me. Yesterday, when I called up Dodger Talk after the game, the two guys gave me the usal bla-bla about how even though he more than .600 with an astronomical slugging %, he was being sent out---small sample size. Ok---to where? Alb? Back to Chatanooga? Is he trying to catch on as a DH somewhere? One of the guys said I should "read between the lines." What the heck does that mean? Does Smith have a problem? Is he a problem? Anyway, any info on Smith would be a boon. And, oh yes,.........GO DODGER BLUE!

The between the lines is
that he is 28 years old and barely seen time in AAA ball. That means many, many professional scouts have decided that you don’t have what it takes to be not only in the majors, and they’ve had a plenty big sample size to make that decision with. If I had to guess, he probably has a big hole in his swing that better pitchers will kill him with.

Could be....
I guess the cream rises to the top. But sometimes guys have bad luck or people in front of them or whatever. As I’ve written, I think he is a good story…and, coming from Brooklyn and having seen the Dodgers when they were indeed Bums, I root for the underdog.

I root for the underdog.
This I can totally understand. And it would be a great story. I’m just the kind of guy that wants to balance that out with realism (fucking engineer). The Dodgers are Smith’s sixth organization, so there must have been a lot of different situations.

Realism hell! As a Dodger fan you always have to remember Hatcher’s HR, Orel’s 59, Gibson’s HR, Monday’s Montreal Blast, and all the other flukes that happen for some wierd, inexplicable reason. You hafta be a fan!
Baseball is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.
A Balance?
Isn’t it possible to balance realism with fantasy? Notice that the word fan is inside the word fantasy. Of course, we all love the flukes (and the flakes). That’s why we’re fans…and when those miracles or wierd things happen, it raises us above the mundane world of realism into the world of dreams. Who was it…Marshall? who got so excited about hitting a HR against the Giants that he pointed his finger at them? Waytogo! His finest moment.
