Kuo Set For Debut, Loney Back Too, As Dodgers Face Mariners
Hong-Chih Kuo is scheduled to make his long-awaited spring debut today, and luckily the game is televised, as the Dodgers battle the Mariners at Camelback Ranch. Kuo missed a lot of time last spring, pitching all of two innings in Cactus League play (he retired all six batters he faced of course, striking out two). He began the season on the disabled list with a sore left elbow, but ended up pitching 60 innings on the season, with the lowest ERA in Dodgers franchise history.
James Loney also returns today, after missing four days with a swollen left knee. The first eight of today's Dodger lineup today will most likely be the opening day lineup, minus the designated hitter of course.
UPDATE: Andre Ethier was a late scratch; Gabe Kapler is in right field in his place.

Gordon
Tony Jackson has a LONG article on Gordon up at ESPNLA. Pretty good read, and the most interesting part to me was that Ned/Watson have no intention of ever moving him off SS. Tony speculates that Furcal could be the one moving to 2B next year if the pieces fall right.
So we’re going to move our shortstop whose best asset is his arm for a guy that couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat?
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 9, 2011 11:39 AM PST up reply actions
I assume this means if Gordon begins to show the club something (anything) at the plate to warrant a callup.
by Michael White on Mar 9, 2011 11:40 AM PST up reply actions
I was talking about his throwing arm.
@andrewngrant
by regfairfield on Mar 9, 2011 11:41 AM PST up reply actions
On the one hand, that makes sense since Furcal is getting older and you want the rangier young Gordon playing short. On the other hand, Furcal still has that rocket arm which is wasted at second base.
by Michael White on Mar 9, 2011 11:39 AM PST up reply actions
I think range trumps arm – hard to make throws on balls you never get to
by Hollywood Joe on Mar 9, 2011 11:41 AM PST up reply actions
In the end it doesn’t matter, an outs an out no matter how you get it, so I want the guy who can get the most outs.

by regfairfield on Mar 9, 2011 11:44 AM PST up reply actions
Eh, Furcal made 34 errors in his last season in the minors before making the jump. If Gordon is ready next year, it will work out.
Hopefully, it’s hard to be a plus shortstop when you’re turning 40+ balls you get to into hits.

2B Uribe / 3B Furcal
by Eric Stephen on Mar 9, 2011 11:49 AM PST up reply actions
Because
Furcal would be better at 2B than Uribe – more range, more nimble, at least as long as the back holds.

@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Yep
I would think the only reason to put Furcal at 3B would be to keep his back healthier.

Despite his non-athletic looking exterior, Uribe has actually been a pretty capable middle infielder.
From what I recall anyway.
by Michael White on Mar 9, 2011 11:57 AM PST up reply actions
He has over 7700 career MLB innings at SS and a career UZR that is positive. He is at least a capable SS. So yeah, maybe the difference isn’t so obvious. Perhaps Furcal at 2B and Uribe at 3B makes more sense to me because Uribe has some experience at 3B (> 1100 innings) and Furcal doesn’t.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Jody GFY Reed
Perhaps the primary focus of Gordon’s game now is his defense, which isn’t as raw as it used to be. He has worked with Matt Martin, the Dodgers’ minor league infield coordinator, and longtime major league infielder Jody Reed, who manages the Dodgers’ Arizona Rookie League team

I submit that Jack Clark was simply terrible as a hitting coach. And they don’t even do anything. Just the wrong choice all the way around.
I remember Clark once quoted as a player as saying that he goes to the plate trying to hit the ball harder than he ever has before, which makes him a batting coach in the Dwayne Murphy mold perhaps? Maybe I want Clark coaching James Loney on hitting – wouldn’t mind him being the next Jose Bautista.

Outfielder Reggie Willits has transformed his rookie assignment six years ago into an annual tradition, taking a few newcomers with him to Toys ‘R Us to buy thousands of dollars of toys. They wrap and distribute them to players with newborns or whose children will visit during the spring. The sizable surplus goes to a battered women’s shelter.
I assume a fair number of those players are minor leaguers not making a ton of dough, so this is doubly nice. I approve of Mr. Willit’s endeavor.

by Hollywood Joe on Mar 9, 2011 12:20 PM PST up reply actions
Theres really no arbitrary mark for calling something a scoop. Basically anything a first baseman takes off of the ground, unless its one of those astroturf like halfway throws, is a scoop. Furcal’s ball was in the no-mans land for first baseman, too close for a big hop, but too far for an easy pick. Thats really just an instinct play, and its definitely a scoop.

but if Garland’s oblique is hurt and he isn’t ready for opening day, the Dodgers don’t have to use their fifth starter until April 10 (that’s really the only time they can skip though).
So they could start the year with either an extra reliever or an extra offensive player on the bench…perhaps an extra week for X.Paul?

let’s say you are saving a PDF doc to a PC and a MAC. The same document, no difference. Would you say the directions to saving that PDF doc to your desktop on both computers is the same?
If you have to give directions to someone on how to save an e-mail attachment, they should be using e-mail to get their documents.
The answer depends on how detailed the directions have to be. They will differ in the minutiae.

Totally OT but speaking about obliques
Shaq had his share of oblique issues but one thing to note about the the all-time scoring list, Kobe is around 1300 points behind Shaq. Shaq started playing 4 seasons prior to Kobe coming into the league and Kobe’s first full-season as a starter was in his 4th season. In the beginning of that season 1999-2000. By that time Shaq was around 10,000 points ahead of Kobe/
In the seven seasons since Shaq was traded by LA, he has scored around 6500 points, Kobe has scored 15,000
better to be on the right side of 30 then on the wrong side of the 30 in that battle. We all knew Shaq was not going to age well, but the fact Kobe has stayed serious injury free while playing through many injuries that would sideline a Clipper for life is extremely impressive.

I think debating a shooting guard against a center is tough to do, the jobs are so different. At times in their era they were both the best player at their position. I think Shaq may have the season peak while Kobe has the career peak assuming he continues on this current plane.
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "
Shaq's peak
Shaq had 3 seasons (in a row) where his PER was over 30. That’s so effin awesome.
by Michael White on Mar 9, 2011 1:24 PM PST up reply actions
Wilt also had 3.
Hakeem had none.
Kareem had none
Russell had none
Not sure how strong PER holds up for Wilt and Russell, but it shoudl be pretty comp for Hakeem and Kareem.
by Michael White on Mar 9, 2011 1:30 PM PST up reply actions
Also
Shaq will be rightly measured against Russell, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabbar, and Olajuwon and where he fits there will be hotly debated.
Kobe is more difficult, as a scorer, the only other wing player scorer to be both among the highest ranked scorers and members of championship teams is Jordan. Magic and Michael are the two guards on my All-TIme first team and that probably doesn’t change even if Kobe wins a few more titles. But Kobe has now eclipsed Oscar and Jerry and he is probably now among the ten best players of all time whereas Shaq doesn’t come close to that ranking.
Of all the players mentioned the two players I really wish I’d seen at their peak would have been Oscar and Baylor. Oscar had the bad luck of never being able to leave a bad team.
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "
I got to watch Baylor at his peak.
Quite a sight to see. He was Magic before there was a Magic.

I only got to see the old guy with the bad knees shooting jumpers from the outside before Jimmy McMillan took his spot and he retired.
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "
To review the top ten all-time scorers and rings
1. Abdul-Jabbar – 6 rings
2. Karl Malone – none
3. Michael Jordan – 6 rings
4. Wilt Chamberlain – 2 rings
5. Shaquelle O’Neal – 4 rings
6. Kobe Bryant – 5 rings
7. Moses Malone – 1 ring
8. Elvin Hayes – 1 ring
9. Hakeem Olajuwon – 2 rings
10. Oscar Robertson – 1 ring
Nice but I don’t really equate “scoring” with best in basketball. Otherwise Iverson would be on some lists and he was not a good basketball player.
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "

Shaq’s a better center’ Kobe a better guard.
Tought question. In both of their primes, Shaq was a more dominant player because, IMHO, a dominant center can truly control a game while it’s harder for a perimeter player to do so. At the end of their careers, Kobe will have more titles but a lot of that is because he stayed on the Lakers while Shaq moved on. Had they been able to exist together you’d have a different end tally and, boy that would have been fun.
All facets of the game

However, until the zone defense rule was changed, no one was more impossible to guard than Shaq after Jordan retired.

Is it better to live as a monster or die as a hero?
The NL champions
have a Polanco at 3rd base, so no, not really
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "
FWIW (and this was really surprising to me) 3rd basemen had more home runs than left fielders last year.
In terms of slug, they’re behind the other corner spots, but well ahead of center fielders and even further in front of middle infielders.
@andrewngrant
Have they ever in history been behind the middle infielders? Is this supposed to be a revelation?
"I don't see how an article of clothing can be indecent. A person, yes. "
No, just trying to counter the idea that they’re closer to a middle infielder than a power position.
@andrewngrant
It should be a power position, but its not so much these days because there are less than 10 good ones.
Why should it be?
It seems none of the top 3b prospects can field the position well enough to stick these days. In the post steroid era, maybe those who have the ability to play a good defensive 3rd base simply aren’t going to have the kind of power we used to associate with the position.
Is it better to live as a monster or die as a hero?
Just because it is more likely to find a guy who can hit for power and play 3B, than 2B, SS, CF, C, and ideally you want more than 3 guys in your lineup with some power.
There aren't a lot of 3b that have power and are good hitters

Is it better to live as a monster or die as a hero?
Yeah, but there aren’t many bad ones.
There were more 3rd basemen with 20 home runs than left fielders.
@andrewngrant
Plus a lot of guys like Blake, Kouzmanoff and Peralta that you don’t think of as power guys but still hit 15+.

As or left field...
Gibbons may or may not suck, but if he does’t suck I would expect him to not suck with power, and Thames certainly has power.
Is it better to live as a monster or die as a hero?
Yeah that's a fair point
the Dodgers bigger worry this year may be OBP. I think they may surprise in the power dept Loney will probably disappoint again but I actually expect him to hit some more dingers this year, and Gibbons and Thames both have power at least, as does Barajas. Blake has power too, though with his age and decreasing bat speed the HRs will probably keep declining. But looking at the rest of the NL Blake doesn’t look that bad.

Rotoworld fail
Jon Garland has confirmed that he suffered a left oblique injury during his Wednesday start.
Garland was pulled after throwing just 1 2/3 innings because he reported feeling discomfort on the left side of his body. If he suffered a strain, it could put him on the sidelines for up to two weeks. The Padres are expected to provide an update on his status soon.

I would rather let paul play and possibly get better. Maybe. I don’t like cutting Paul loose before we know if Gibbons is going to shit the bed or not. Bleh.

I don’t hate the idea of trying to go with a defensive team, but they didn’t really build it that way and they aren’t going to move Kemp out of center. So really, you have to take the good with the bad with Thames/Gibbons and if they are hitting, it won’t matter how shitty they are in the field.

I don’t know the numbers, but off the top of my head, I kinda hate the idea of stressing defense in LF. I just can’t imagine that the defensive difference between Paul and Thames will be more than the offensive difference between them.
Terrible LF defense will look awful and be frustrating, but I can’t imagine it will lead to all that many extra runs over average/good defense. Am I wrong?

The sooner people realize that Thames is a good hitter and a crappy fielder the more we can all be at zen with both those things and enjoy it. :-) (Well not as much the crappy defense. But again, most LFers are there for a reason.)

It’s one thing to lose to the Lakers. It’s another to welcome them into your home and fix them a sandwich.
Hawks players don’t like this, nor does management. Neither does ownership. But they’re seizing on the economic possibilities. Kobe Bryant T-shirts were being sold for $30 a pop at the Hawks Team Gear store. You couldn’t miss them because they sat on a table, right next to the Al Horford shirts that were being sold for $25.
The Bryant T-shirts sold out before the game. Selling a hockey team should be so easy. It’s a good thing the Lakers weren’t in town for a three-game series or the Atlanta Spirit might open a Lakers Team Gear store.
When told the team was selling Bryant shirts, guard Jamal Crawford responded: "In the arena? Are you serious? Unbelievable."
Seriously
I used to go to Dodger Games as a kid looking forward to buying the pennant of the opposing team. Even had a Giants one for awhile. Selling visitor’s gear is both smart business and fun for collectors who are too young or unable to travel.

Well, they left some of it there, but then my brother started complaining that he couldn’t have girls over because of all the Justin Timberlake posters.
Who's Dioner Navarro?
QUITE FRANKLY SLEEPING ON MADDZ’S COUCH WAS A MUCH BETTER IDEA THAN HAVING MY GIRLFRIEND PICK ME UP AT 2 IN THE MORNING.
@andrewngrant
We were definitely alternating rounds at one point but I probably lost count somewhere.
@andrewngrant
this plot is definitely
payign off more now.

I’d say Reg dove on a grenade for me, but that’s not quite accurate. he did investigative reporting and determined that I was not making a great life choice. which made Drunk Maddz sad.
Who's Dioner Navarro?
yeah i would have probably
given you bad drunk guy advice. something along the lines of “why not, you only live once and it is better than being bored.”

i was totally
waiting for this plot to peak and and then payoff. i was sorta dissappointed. but it was a good ride.

The Giants PhoneBooth park goes out of its way to not sell gear for any teams not the Giants
it drives me batty. I wasn’t surprised they didn’t have any Dodger gear or like that, but they don’t even have generic MLB gear or a few other things.

I am trying to remember when I went to the NBA Finals last year
they had a large set-up selling NBA Finals gear but I don’t think there was any Celtics stuff there.
I do seem to recall the store at Coors Park had caps for different teams (as does the Dodger store at Universal City Walk)
Funny Orlando newspaper column on SVG rant
We are going to wake up someday soon and Stan Van Gundy will be gone.
Gone without a trace.
Nobody will know where he is. Not his family. Not his team. Not the police.
Not even Chris Broussard of ESPN.
Let me just say this in defense of the NBA commissioner: There’s a big difference between David Stern and Moammar Gadhafi. Stern, at least, spells his name the same way every time.
Let’s face it, it doesn’t really matter who Van Gundy was talking about; what matters is Stern is the focal point of Van Gundy’s complaint. And that’s not good. If Van Gundy’s lucky, he will just get fined, but I think he gets worse. I think Stern exiles Van Gundy to his secret gulag where other outspoken NBA rebels have been imprisoned. Think about it: Has anybody seen Stephen A. Smith lately?
quite frankly, i kinda like
that he says quite frankly a lot. but i was mostly asking to did he do something specifically to piss off david stern?

Felix has impressed me!
but maybe more so because he followed WDLR and Huber.

I still don’t get what everybody is talking about with Catch 57. Or Gimenez.

Catch-57 is just a joke
The only way to raise one’s stock enough to make the roster is not to pitch.
By converse: the pitchers on the bubble who pitch in the games watch their stock fall — meaning the pitchers who are off that day see their stock rise.
Just a joke.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
Whoever makes the roster via Catch-57
will forever be known as “Yossarian”
So let it be said, so let it be done

If “The Mayan” doesn’t stick, call him Dune Buggy: big power, good wheels.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
I am not mocking or blocking The Mayan. I endorse The Mayan. But we don’t always control what sticks. And if it does not stick, I offer an alternative, a backup.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
Over at DT a few guys are on "Quick Hands Sands"

Because he ceases to exist after 2012? (I have not caught up to this Mayan thing yet.)

You just used the word “sucks” following a Eugenio Velez flyout, and yet you did not reference Velez.
That’s ten laps, son.

Walk and two strikeouts for Lindblom.
Excellent, Catch-57-defying performance!

A coworker dropped his iphone in the toilet. His solution is to dunk it in isopropanol, then let it dry in a 60 degree Celsius hyb oven. Anyone think this is a good idea?
SERIOUSLY RIGHT? No one wants to bring that up but wtf is he doing with his phone while dropping a deuce?
browsing the internet

I dropped my phone in the toilet once
but see, it was freshman year, I was wasted, and I had it in my back pocket.
Who's Dioner Navarro?
I did something so stupid with one of my phones that telling the service guy I dropped it in the toilet was much less embarrassing.
@andrewngrant
Did it involve Fister?
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man

Surprised this wasnt brought up. Maybe the worst few seconds of officiating in history. I take back what I said yesterday about Pac-10 refs….sort of.
Can't help but notice that we haven't seen Eric since I told him to run 10 laps.
