Dodgers Week 2 In Review: Running Wild
The Dodgers got their road trip off to a rocky start in Colorado, but recovered with a nice weekend in San Diego, taking two of three games against the Padres.
Dodger Batter of the Week: There were actually quite a few candidates this week, but this award will be split by the outfield trio.of Tony Gwynn Jr., Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier. Kemp led the team in OPS for the second straight week, but the other two weren't far behind. Gwynn had the winning hit in the 11th inning of the suspended game in San Diego against his former team, while Ethier clubbed his first home run of the season.
Honorable mention goes to Casey Blake, who returned from the disabled list with a bang.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: The starting pitching had more downs than ups this week, but Hiroki Kuroda takes the cake with his near shutout on Saturday night at Petco Park. The right-hander pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings, picking up his second win of the season.
Week 2 Record: 2-3
15 runs scored (3.00 per game)
19 runs allowed (3.80 per game)
.394 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 5-4
28 runs scored (3.11 per game)
38 runs allowed (4.22 per game)
.364 pythagorean winning percentage (3-6)
Welcome Back Wheels: Casey Blake came back from the disabled list on Wednesday, and promptly hit a triple in his first game back. Blake continued to take his status as number two hitter to heart, adding a stolen base on Friday in San Diego. It was the first time Blake stole third base in his career.
Speaking Of Wheels: Kemp and Gwynn combined for eight steals in eight attempts on the week, with seven of the eight thefts taking place on Saturday and Sunday in San Diego. Kemp's three stolen bases Saturday night were a career high, and the first time a Dodger had swiped three bases on one game since Juan Pierre on August 29, 2009.
Rarefied Thin Air: The Dodgers were shutout on Tuesday in Colorado, mostly the work of Jhouyls Chacin, who tossed seven scoreless innings. It was just the third time in 287 games in Denver that the Dodgers didn't score.
Double Duty: Thanks to Friday's suspended game in San Diego, Saturday featured two games: the completion of one game, followed by the regularly scheduled fare. The Dodgers won both, and Jonathan Broxton picked up a save in each game. The last Dodger to get two saves in one day was Jeff Shaw on August 25, 2000 at Wrigley Field.
Transactions:
- Tuesday: after the first game against the Rockies, the Dodgers optioned Ivan DeJesus to Triple A Albuqerque, to make room for...
- Wednesday: before the second game in Colorado, the Dodgers activated Casey Blake from the 15-day disabled list
- Sunday: the Dodgers recalled John Ely from Triple A to start in San Diego. To make room for Ely, the Dodgers (told A.J. Ellis he was going to be optioned) placed Hector Gimenez on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right knee, retroactive to April 9
Game Results:
- Tuesday: Rockies 3, Dodgers 0
- Wednesday: Rockies 7, Dodgers 5
- Friday (and Saturday): Dodgers 4, Padres 2 (11)
- Saturday: Dodgers 4, Padres 0
- Sunday: Padres 7, Dodgers 2
Upcoming Week: The Dodgers this week run the 1987 (or 2002, if you prefer) NLCS gauntlet, facing both the Giants and Cardinals. The Dodgers battle the Giants in San Francisco, ending an eight-game road trip, but then return home for a four-game set with St. Louis. The schedule for the week is full, and there are no weekday day games to deal with.

I love TGJr
I hope he continues to put in work.
C'mon, let's rock tonight...we're goin' right out of our minds!
agreed.
if somehow he turned into a real lead off hitter we’d be in better shape than i thought.

the offense has scored 7 runs in 4 losses
5 of them came in one game.
i don’t care how good your rotation is, that type of offense just won’t cut it. remind me to stop watching baseball right before Kemp and Ethier slump together.
If you are only looking at losses, wouldn’t most teams be looking at pretty low runs totals? After all, they did lose the game. If teams are racking up a lot of runs in losses they would post the exact same comment but discuss how the pitching staff just won’t cut it.

yes but i'm not concerned with other teams, i'm concerned with the dodgers

You are missing the point. You can’t look at runs in losses and say that’s why they are losing. You have skewed the sample, because by the very nature of losses, you tend to have scored less runs.
The evidence you really want is right in the article. The Dodgers have scored 3.11 runs/game overall. That is not enough offense to sport a winning record.

i get it. but we know we have a “good” rotation. if we were scoring more runs and still losing i’d feel more comfortable with the fact that Bills has a chance to bounce back than Loney does to have a change of pace.

Stolen bases
On the season, the Dodgers have already racked up 11 stolen bases vs. 2 caught stealing. Of the 2 CS, one was John Ely yesterday.
Especially nice is the no CS for Kemp

If you were planning a week
This would be how to plan it. With seven games, this week will feature a double dose of both Kershaw and Billingsley.
Home against the Braves for four, then at Wrigley. They got this.

No one wants to give the Rockies credit for the defensive clinic they put on
We could have scored 3 or 4 runs Tuesday with better luck and if Ty Wiggington remembered who he was.

Garland only threw 80 pitches yesterday. They want to make sure he recovers over the next couple of days before activating him.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
And they play it safe by not sending down Ely for a reliever in the mean time? Even in a worst case scenario when you send down Ely for Troncoso, you could always recall Ely within 10 days by having Tron/Cormier “pulling a muscle”
by Michael White on Apr 11, 2011 8:50 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not arguing the point with you. But they didn’t tax the bullpen that much the last two days and I have to think that at some point, MLB will get annoyed with too many phantom injuries. Doubt the Dodgers are on that cusp yet, but why risk it when you don’t have to?
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
The bullpen is definitely nice and rested. D2X went the house money route yesterday of using Jansen/Cormier in a close game instead of Guerrier and (if necessary) Kuo.

They are going to wait and see how Garland feels today and maybe even wait until tomorrow before deciding.
The bullpen isn’t in disarray right now; everyone is pretty much well rested and Kershaw is pitching tonight. They won’t make a move anytime soon.

I can’t find it in the CBA, but I believe players when they are called up get 7 days of per diem no matter what, even if the team is at home. The team also has to put them up in a hotel room for 7 days even if at home. I’ll try to get the details this weekend from the Dodgers travel guy.

My bold statement:
Jon Garland’s first start will not be any better then the one start we got from Ely
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
Ely was one pitch to (not-Todd) Hundley from throwing a perfectly nice ballgame, even if he looked like a AAA pitcher while doing it.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
His smoke and mirrors ERA was 7.92, from what I gathered from the game thread every fly ball that was hit would have been a home run in any other stadium and every strikeout he got was because the Padres are crappy including the guy he got twice who might hold the highest OPS against the Dodgers this decade. He really should be in A ball and has no business holding a major league team to four runs in 5 2/3.
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
message I received from GScott during the game
This is the only time Ely should be allowed to pitch: in Petco against a AAA squad
C'mon, let's rock tonight...we're goin' right out of our minds!
Not true. Some of the balls hit against him were solid fly balls, but I can’t think of one that should have gone out.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
The first Ludwick fly ball to the warning track in LF is probably gone at most parks IMO

Oh yeah
That was gone in any other park
"Champions last year," he said. "Not this year." - Rubby De La Rosa after shaming the Giants in ST
That one was hit pretty well. I could see that out at some parks, but maybe not Dodger Stadium either.
Although this whole line of thinking is moot. Could have been a home run is not the same as is a home run.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
No argument here. I do not want him to start again. However, I also do not want Redding. I want Jon Garland to be ready to pitch like Jon Garland.
"It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great."
Agreed.
I’d just assume we go with Garland, then Night Stalker, then Ely, then anyone but Tim Redding or anyone named Russ/Ramon Ortiz
I’m still pining for the Erickson/DJ Houlton/Loaiza/Seo/Hendrickson/Tomko days
Whenever fortune smiles on you, someone else got the frown
Wow. That’s impressive. I think Colletti’s entire plan this offseason was to destroy the very concept of a “5th starter.” He failed.

Really nice words from Giants exec Larry Baer on KNBR this morning
talking about the meaning of the Dodger Giant rivalry, and about what the team is doing to curb any chances of violence or retribution tonight. Also hinted that there will be some kind of pregame either ceremony or video with players from both teams calling for peace. Some of us had wondered whether they’d do that. Baer had some cool things to say, like how when the Giants were threatening to move to Florida, the person who stepped up most to help keep them in SF, outside of Bay Area people, was Dodgers Peter O’Malley. Just as a reminder at how much the rivalry means to both teams, and how the Dodgers and Giants are in some ways two peas in a pod as teams that both moved to California at same time and have a long storied history both here and in NY. Anyway, all his way of reminding fans to be respectful and let your team do the talking on the field. And that Dodger fans and Phillies fans, etc, are human beings who root for a different team. (OK, not sure about that Phillies comment. J/k.)
Someone had also suggested SF fans shake hands of a nearby Dodger fan tonight but Baer said, eh, maybe just a polite wave, let’s not take it too far. Anyhoo.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

NBA Playoffs
I’ll be honest. This is exactly how I follow the NBA playoffs. I start with the number 105 (the total number of games possible if every series goes the full seven), then as I count forward with each successive final, I also revise backwards if a series ends before going the distance. My dream is a playoffs in which only 60 games are played (the minimum), but that will never happen. [This system can also be applied to the NHL playoffs.]
