Lots of discussion on this blog about James Loney and his production at first base. Fangraphs digs into the numbers.

Convincing article. (Note also the old acquaintance as fourth commenter there.)

I like that he comes to the conclusion that their player worth calculations don’t work, and totally glosses over it.

The “worst player over the last three years besides Jeff Francouer” point is especially damming, since JoePos had an article a couple months ago that Francouer has been given more undeserved chances than anyone in the last 50 years.

So

Upshot is that this should be Loney’s last year with us. If his production stays roughly where it’s been, it would be a waste of money to offer him arbitration next year. We’ll Martin him and find a replacement.

Nothing earth-shattering here. The more I see Sands, the more I’m convinced he fits in LF, as opposed to 1b. In the stranger-things-have-happened category, would anyone be surprised to see Blake in the mix for the 1b job next year? Colletti could even pick up his option instead of spending the money on Loney.

Assuming Coletti still has a job.

Seems more likely that Trayvon gets to play LF and Sands at 1B and we go find us a durable MI or a replacement for Kuroda (unless he stays, in which case I expect bullpen and bench signings mostly).

What are the three or four best stadiums

for Loney to hit in? Is there a match with any of those teams?

by Dodgers1981 on Apr 20, 2011 9:51 AM PDT reply actions

Having a really close fence obviously doesn’t help Loney, so a big outfield with lots of room for gappers is for the best. Colorado or something.

Loney is the worst not Jeff Francouer player the last three years and has 7 million coming to him next year. As long as the other team has “nothing” there’s a match.

But, does he have a much higher OBP or slugging percentage at any particular park/parks?

The problem with what you are asking for is that they will all be small sample sizes. But you can find that info here.

clearly, we should trade him to the Rays so he can be a hall of famer.

The ones I can think of are Coors Field (probably his favorite to hit in, numberswise), Chase Field (D-Backs), and Great American Ballpark (Reds). He also does well in Busch Stadium (Cards) and Minute Maid Park (Astros). If the Dodgers finally do decide to unload him, I reckon he’d be more attractive to the teams whose ballparks have been mentioned here.

So, as I read it, Ithe likely posibilities where there may be 1st base openings are Baltimore, Cleveland, Tampa, Washington, Pittsburgh. Chicago, St. Louis, and Milwaukee. Out of those, StL is the only park where he hits well and will have a posiible opening next year. So basically, we’re screwed for a possible trade this year and won’t see Loney gone unless he is just released.

He has his highest OPS in the 3 game set they played at Tampa. Trade him for BJ I say!

Todd Helton is old.

not sure if the Rox have anybody we need but it may not be a horrible salary dump on our end and worth the risk on their end.
