Chacin Outduels Kershaw, Dodgers Shutout For Third Time Ever In Denver
Jhoulys Chacin outpitched Clayton Kershaw tonight at Coors Field, giving the Rockies a 3-0 win over the Dodgers. Chacin pitched seven scoreless innings, running his lifetime ERA against the Dodgers to 2.42 in seven starts, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out four. Tonight was just the third time ever that the Dodgers have been shutout in Denver, in 286 games dating back to 1993.
| Dodgers Getting Shutout At Coors Field | ||
| Date | Score | Rockies Starter |
| tonight | 3-0 | Jhoulys Chacin |
| 9/14/08 | 1-0 (10) | Aaron Cook |
| 5/28/03 |
6-0 | Shawn Chacon |
Kershaw pitched reasonably well. It's hard to argue with eight strikeouts and no unintentional walks in six innings, but Kershaw gave up single runs in three straight innings, thanks to three fastballs Kershaw wishes he had back, all with two outs. In the fourth inning, Kershaw left a 2-2 fastball over the middle of the plate, and Troy Tulowitzki crushed it over the fence in center for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Kershaw grooved a 3-1 fastball to catcher Chris Iannetta, who deposited it into the left field stands. Then, in the sixth, Kershaw decided to walk Tulowitzki with Dexter Fowler on third base, but Jose Lopez lined a fastball into center for an RBI single, and the third Colorado run.
Rockies' pitchers retired the final 12 Dodgers to close out the win.
Notes
- Rafael Furcal grounded out to second baseman Lopez in all four plate appearances tonight
- The defensive play of the night (if it wasn't Carlos Gonzalez covering the field like a tarp and making a catch of a slicing ball off the bat of Tony Gwynn Jr. look routine, in the first inning) was Gwynn, who ranged back to the wall in left field to quickly field a hard-hit ball off the wall by Todd Helton to open the fifth inning. Gwynn speared the ball with his bare hand and threw to second base to get Helton, who hadn't yet slid into the television screen by the time the ball reached Jamey Carroll at second base.
- Kershaw has 17 strikeouts and one unintentional walk in 13 innings this season.
- Both Dodger relief pitchers tonight, Mike MacDougal and Blake Hawksworth, each bucked a recent trend and retired the first man they faced.
- Casey Blake is expected to be activated from the disabled list before tomorrow's game, and in fact the Dodgers optioned Ivan DeJesus to Triple A Albuquerque after tonight's game, paving the way for Blake.
- Chad Billingsley faces Jason Hammel tomorrow at 12:10 p.m. on getaway day.
WP - Jhoulys Chacin (1-0): 7 IP, 5 hits, 2 walks (1 intentional), 5 strikeouts
LP - Clayton Kershaw (1-1): 6 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 1 intentional walk, 8 strikeouts
Sv - Huston Street (2): 1 IP, 1 strikeout

true enough? I’m not sure where you are going with this. I didn’t ask when Manny was coming back.

Nah, I think Arizona overachieved. If some shots had fallen in the Uconn game they could have, but I don’t think they ‘should have’ won it.

we hit the ball hard
I like what I saw from Gwynn and I loved the Uribe d. Lets go get em tomorrow!
These hands will always be rough
Probably tomorrow
they will at least wait to make sure Blake is okay to play. I am thinking his stuff could be in Arizona still.
I doubt that
Everybody knew the plan with DeJesus. He was headed for ABQ as soon as Blake was ready. I’m sure that was planned for.
I wonder what happened to him
His plate discipline went away as soon as he broke his leg…

Definitely understandable
You swapped Esmil Rogers for Jhoulys Chacin. I didn’t figure it would matter since Chacin drew Kershaw though.

Not a loser in the bunch
Rome Open City was just on TCM. It was not bad. Fellini was one of the writers. Sweet Smell of Success is always watchable. Ministry of Fear is good also. Especially the first third
Do the chair know we gonna look like some punk-ass bitches out there?
all were DVR'd from TCM! haha!
i went with Ministry of Fear, first 1/3 IS great but the rest is only so-so so far…

He was actually an All-Star that season

Yeah, by default
It was the 2003 Rox, after all. Someone had to be the All Star. He wasn’t bad, but barely better than league average.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Yeah I know Chacon wasn’t awful at one point, it’s just fun finding new ways to describe how bad the 2003 Dodgers were offensively.
I’m sure in the future I’m gonna be able to look back at this team and laugh too.
@andrewngrant
Oh, that was Chacon's one shining moment
As opposed to his 40-save 6.00-ERA season, lol.
I do think you guys are gonna have a real hard time scoring runs this year, just because I don’t see much beyond Ethier…but damn, you’ve got some serious arms.
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
Yep, but in five years I’m still gonna be able to look at this team and say “man, we had Rod Barajas and Marcus Thames as plan A, wasn’t that crazy” /drinks everclear
We’ve got some arms no doubt, but this team is no 2003 Dodgers in that department. On the bright side, we don’t have Barry to worry about.
@andrewngrant
The irony there is that Uncle Ned did actually sign players...
But I think yer in a pickle until the ownership situation’s sorted…
"We have done everything possible to be set for this day, for this season. It's time to go. We are ready. I can promise you that." - CarGo
It was more because he was leading the league in wins at the ASB
He was 11-4, don’t forget. And Preston Wilson was also an All-Star that year, so Chacon wasn’t just a token AS

Can't really be too disappointed with this loss..
Kershaw was dealin’, we had our chances, but couldn’t capitalize.
It’s not like Chacin hasn’t had any success against the Dodgers. He’s become our present day Jake Peavy.
Bills tomorrow.
I was out with clients and liquored up
So this game didn’t happen for me. You can point it out in the loss column if you like, but I will only tell you to “GFY and prove it”
and it seems I like all the movies Marty likes
and I noticed BH cracking wise a couple of times – I liked it
and never mind
Sad, Kemp and Carroll would be the only offense if not for Giants defense. Carroll which is funny because he was brought in to be a back-up…………this could have easily been an 0-5 start.
Yep, it’s certainly wrist-slitting time.

I sometimes wish we still had Carroll....
I know he’ll never leap out at you as anything special, in that sorta Ecksteinian way, but the dude’s got a knack of coming up with the right goods at the right time.

But they only lost by 3 today. If a few things had been different this evening they could be 4-1 and no one would be too worried. I understand the offense isn’t inspiring.

Still a bad loss
Regardless of how many chances you have, getting shut out by Jhoulys Chacin, a guy with 8 career wins before tonight) is inexcusable. Besides, there weren’t even that many chances to begin with. The Dodgers only went 0-4 with runners in scoring position, and they only got 1 extra base hit all game. Pretty bad offensive game all the way around.
Just like in the season-opening series, the problem for the Dodgers started at the top of the order. Tonight, they went 1-8. In the first 4 games, they hit .200 with a .550 OPS. Check out these top-of-the-order rankings:
http://sportstatistics.blogspot.com/2011/04/leadoff-rankings-week-1-way-too-early.html
Those numbers have to come up if the Dodgers hope to win the division this year
Huh?
Chacin was a rookie last year and only pitched for four months. Judging him on career wins is ridiculous. He was the Rockies’ top prospect before reaching the majors in 2010. He had just 22 starts (8wins) before tonight. In case you were curious, Kershaw had 5 in his first 22 starts.

Chacin is a really good pitcher. Why are you quoting wins?
Chacin's been really consistent thru the minors..
His numbers remind me alot of Rubby.
They both arent really high K guys…but just seem to pitch good enough to not give up runs.
you're mostly right
Chacin has improved his K rate over the last couple years. He has been around a K per inning, which is extremely good for a starter.

Quakes played APU tonight in an expedition game
Ethan Martin started and allowed 4 runs early, although it seems that not all of the runs were earned. Quakes battled back on RBI hits from Lemmerman, Griff Erickson, and Ramon Jean. Luis Vasquez got the save, but had to work around a hit, a walk, and an error. Full story here
Taking note
On Thursday, the Quakes will travel to San Bernardino to open the 2011 regular season against the division-rival Inland Empire 66ers. After a seven-game road trip to begin the year, the Quakes will finally open at home on Thursday, April 14th, as they take on the Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05pm. The Home Opener at The Epicenter will feature a Thirsty Thursday, sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings. Everyone will also enjoy a Post-Game Fireworks Celebration! Fans will also receive 2011 Quakes’ Magnet Schedules, thanks to Allstar KIA.

If anyone is interested in the $10 MiLBTv deal (if u already subscribe to MLBTV), heard back from their customer support. They say the $10 deal is for new subscribers. People who had auto renew or already signed up are screwed. Their solution is to unsubscribe and then resubscribe and choose MiLBtv deal for an extra $10. Can someone back me up on this? Hasn’t Furcal been a late starter all his career? I seem to recall a Braves fan friend of mine saying that was the problem with him was he would be cold in April and heat up as it went on. His tenure with the Dodgers has been so injury plagued that I can’t really be sure if that holds up or not. Just looking for any rays of hope

The Rockies announcers mentioned it last night. They were talking about Ethier’s hot start last year. They said he won the Rafael Furcal award.
That is the MVP award if the season ended after 6 weeks.
Historically
March/April is his worst month of the season. His splits show that he picks it up in May, slumps a tiny bit in June and then really picks it up in July.
